2001 Kilikanoon Shiraz Covenant

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

Saturday, June 27, 2015 - Decanted. Quite oak water on the nose; vanilla, spice, underpinned by coconut and black cherry and berry. Also a slight oxidative note. On the palate more of the same including that oxidative element. It's quite juicy but the oak is the most dominant factor underpinned by black notes. The tannins are fully resolved. Done it's dash I'd say.
Footnote: I was a touch disappointed and left the rest of the wine (about 200ml) in the decanter over night. In the morning before I threw it down the sink I had a sniff and almost couldn't believe my nose...the oak element had almost entirely dissipated almost completely revealing blackberry, black pepper, a menthol note, touches of rhubarb and chocolate. I took a punt on trying it and it was superb. Rich and velvety textured with the same flavours as those on the nose. What a turnaround! On this basis I think I'll have to revise my drinking window.
