93 Points

Sunday, November 2, 2014 - I missed the first golden age of Napa since I was still gargling beer during college in the early seventies. I was fortunate though to witness the second golden era in the early nineties, before the Parker paradigm came to rule the day. In my view, not much great cabernet has been produced in Napa since the mid-nineties...

This '92 Conn Valley Cabernet speaks to this golden era. I first tasted this wine in Gus and Phyllis's screened porch in their home on Rossi Road adjacent the vineyards. Accompanied by my friend John Thoreen, we tasted the '92 with a selection of charcuterie served by Phyllis. This bottle brought back fond memories...

The '92 estate cabernet shows plenty of tobacco, leather and pencil. More than twenty years in the bottle, there is no sign of browning on the edges and after decanting, the wine was crystal clear and translucent with deep, garnet filling the glass. There is a noticeable absence of sweet berry fruit but the finish extends enjoyably without a longing for it. A perfect dinner accompaniment.... make sure you have another bottle on hand for seconds!
