2008 Château Lafon-Rochet

84 Points

Wednesday, September 2, 2015 - Initially this opens with a nose full of cedar and flat generic Cab Sav aromas. Like cheap young supermarket wine. Double decanted and let air for several hours. Occasional whiff of something more interesting, occasional hint of the fact this comes from superb soil in a decent vintage. But struggles to hold or open up or develop or suggest that the future is in any way more enticing. This is approaching 8 years old from a vintage which should allow for some pleasure by now. Nearly every other St Estephe '08 that I have tried is full of earth and soil and fruit and is just gorgeous, incl a bunch of cheap Cru Burgeois from the supermarket (e.g. the Beau Site is considerably more exotic, mineral and complex, at a third of the price). Perhaps this is way too young, but I've had tight, unyielding but promising wines aplenty - you know it's good, just too young. This is just bland and massively overpriced. Trouble is, this is the fifth or sixth Lafon I've tasted, and none have impressed me. Sadly, I think this house is poor, and living on a reputation from yesteryear. At the price, this wine almost feels like a fraud. Happy to be shown otherwise, but on somebody else's tab... There are far too many good wines I'd actually like to spend my money on.
