Thursday, July 2, 2015 - Very dark purple, totally opaque with just a hint of tawny at the rim; perhaps slightly cloudy, though it's so dense it's hard to be sure. The nose is a slightly soupy one of indeterminate berry-ness. On the palate - wow! - alcohol hits big time. The wine is shown as 14%, which is not particularly high for Plantagenet, or Aussie Shiraz as a whole, but in this case I'm getting a burn that knocks the wine off-balance. A shame, because otherwise it's pretty good: loads of fruit, a nip of acidity, very fine tannins, and a long, smoky finish. As I said in my previous note, I've enjoyed many old Plantagenets enormously, and though this is good, it's not as great as some of them have been. I'll put that down to the vagaries of the vintage, or to wine-making choices that year. Still, an enjoyable and above all fascinating wine.
