Tuesday, January 8, 2013 - Took to Riverpark as part of my birthday celebration. Opened and decanted for about 20 minutes before poured. Dark and creamy nose of blackberry and plummy fruit, maybe some black currant. Also a significant herbal component, and some serious coffee or mocha bitterness - dark chocolate? Very smooth and supple on the palate, maybe a little too smooth and creamy for me - lacking a bit of structure. Again with the dark fruits, here the coffee and dark chocolate bitterness are more dominant, with some backup from the herbal note. This is almost a little slippery - maybe I'm used to higher acid wines. It is tasty and enjoyable, and went well with the dry-aged sirloin, but it didn't wow me as I was hoping it would. Finish is decently long, but somewhat soft as well. Would this have been better with a few hours air? It didn't change much in the hour or two that it sat in glass/decanter as we ate. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.
