Thursday, July 5, 2012 - This was very confusing. Initially the nose quickly opened up and reminded me of an Italian Bordeaux. After 3 hours of aeration in decanter the wine only became more nuanced with the new oak and hard tannin as it seemed to recoil into a shell. The oak was dominant (obnoxious) and tasted American with coconut and vanilla. The wine had depth and potential in the midpalate, but the finish came quickly with hard, bitter tannin. I do think this wine will be very good if you can wait another 10 years at least. Not feeling this wine as others have. It was tough going after a '95 Pavillon, but after revisiting the wine had not budged.
