Friday, February 22, 2013 - Grape variety: 80% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha
Only the third vintage that is called "Reserva Especial" after 1964 and 1973.
Colour: Brick-red colour with a bit a darker core.
Nose: Black & red cherries, leather, cigar box, oak, earth and balsamic notes on the nose.
Palate: On the palate medium-bodied with a nice fresh touch, good acidity and tast of red cherries and pepper, in the end earth and a bit of oak again. Medium finish.
Overall a good PQW. Enjoyable now, but it will be interesting to check this wine in 5-10 years against it brother Alta Gran Reserva 904, the Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea and some others from this extraordinary 2001 vintage. So you better keep a bottle in your cellar.
