Saturday, October 15, 2011 - Poured through Vinturi into decanter. Started drinking after about an hour of decanting. Ok, this wine is GOING to be good. It's not there yet, however. The nose is somewhat hot, though you get a lot of the usual QC aromas, heavy on the dark fruit and violet (though my wife assures me I have no idea what violets actually smell like). Gobs of blackberry and blueberry on the palate, with some oak. But still tight, with noticeable tannins and alcohol. My wife's reaction, after her obligatory taste, was "grapey." I do get plenty of the signature QC flavors (see blackberry mention above), but it's just not all in balance yet. I really think this will come together and there are definitely things to like already (I hope so, given my 4-5 cases of it), but I'm probably going to give it at least 6 more months before trying again, and probably closer to a year. The alcohol did blow off somewhat as it sat, and it mellowed a bit as it opened up (a little), so I do think some bottle age is going to help.
