91 Points

Sunday, March 27, 2016 - Purchased off the wine list at the Laurentiusstube in Hotel Eurener Hof in Trier for a bargainous € 75. Immediately after opening, the wine was thin and dry, closed and charmless. I decided to hope for the best and to see how the two-thirds left in the bottle would develop over the next 24 hours. I was not disappointed. It remains a light wine, with the typical acidity of the 2008 vintage, and there is a stemmy greenness to it, but it developed a lovely and warm bouquet of estery cherries, sous-bois, spices and red earth, with a silky texture, elegant sweet fruit on the mid palate, and slightly grippy but finely grained tannins; mature finish with cold tea, good nuance and length. Certainly not a great Suchots, but in the context of the 2008 vintage (looking at the other TN's on CT of 2008 Suchots from the various producers, this climat did not fare very well in 2008) and considering the style of wine making, it is a very decent result. But it needs a long decant or a few more years in the cellar.
