Friday, April 2, 2010 - The 1978 Calon-Segur is one leafy ‘mofo’, there are notes of tobacco leaf, basil leaf, mint leaf, marijuana leaf, curry leaf and decaying maple leaf, in fact there are more leaves here than on a path in the Tuileries in Autumn. There are also hints of beef stock and sweet cedar. There’s the faintest suggestion of cassis but I imagine it is like a suggestion that David Schildknecht might make in a Wine Advocate planning meeting that goes a little like this ‘hey Bob, lets do more Burgundy coverage in the Wine Advocate’ (the suggestion is dismissed quickly). This is a skinny, slightly mean wine but it does work with a slow cooked braise of lamb shoulder, cooked down with red wine, garlic and spices.
