Wednesday, October 5, 2011 - This wine was definitely aromatically closed on day 1, but on day 2 it's really strutting it's stuff. Tar/asphalt is the keystone in an arching bouquet of incense, black plum, dried violets and, dare I say,... opium? This is a bottomless pit of dark scents. The palate maintains structure, though, amidst all these weighty notes. The tannins are velvety and there's a soft wave of gentle acidity in the mid-palate to give it form. Shardana is definitely a food wine and was absolutely pitch perfect with a beef and wild mushroom stew I previously made. I can't wait to see what bottle #2 will do in a few years from now.
