2009 Château Giscours

92 Points

Tuesday, August 25, 2015 - A blend of 55% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. A wonderfully balanced wine - even straight from the cellar and at 11C the tannins were so well enveloped in fruity flesh that the wine was very attractive to drink. At 18C and after two hours in the bottle (I chose not to decant), the bright (Cabernet) and ripe (Merlot) fruit really shines in the glossy, deep and broad nose, and is complemented by earth, spice and a hint of vanilla; the palate is still a bit tight, but energy and harmony are exemplary and the firm structural elements are beautifully integrated, whilst the flavours are pure and très Giscours; complete finish with potent tannins, very good length. It is still early days, but this bodes well for the future. I don't think this will close down so I would suggest drinking this between now and 2030+.

8/25/2015 4:13:00 PM - Hi Xavier, thanks for the note. Reads great. From your description I would have thought this could be a 94-95 wine, so do I read your 92 as a 92+?

8/26/2015 8:19:00 AM - @pavel_p: Thanks for your comment. Yes, I did consider giving the Giscours 2009 a score of 93, consistent with my scores for the 2000, 2005 and 2010. In the end I felt however that it would need to develop a little more complexity in order to justify that higher score. It probably will. Generally speaking I think that even a very good Giscours lacks the subtlety and nuance to deserve a score of 94-95. The only vintage of Giscours (out of 26 vintages tasted from 1962 - 2011) that I have ever given that score was the famous 1970, but that was for sheer power rather than for finesse. I trust this is helpful.
