Saturday, September 27, 2014 - Deep, purply color. Potent nose of blackberry liqueur, graphite and eucalyptus. Very ripe blackberry and cassis fruit in a big, thick package with lots of intensity and power. With a little coaxing, I can get the great lead pencil, graphite flavors of this classic Pauillac that are hidden underneath. The texture is very fine and the finish is saturated but there are big, fresh tannins circling with good acids which the wine needs to balance the strong fruit. This shocked me at first with its ripeness and I was wondering if I could pick this out from a Napa cab in a blind tasting but, there is that Bordeaux freshness and grip on the finish that gives me long-term faith in this wine. But the question remains in my mind, how ripe is too ripe even in Bordeaux? This wine is certainly pushing the envelope on that concept. It was drinkable tonight with a bbq'd steak to help ameliorate the tannins but clearly needs time. Trust me, the '82 Lynch Bages was never this ripe in its youth. 93?
