Community Tasting Note

88 Points

Thursday, April 24, 2014 - I agree with the gist of most of these notes below. Double decanted and slowly savored over 1.5 hrs it opened up reasonably given its youth. Your mileage will vary on this at the moment. I got a pleasant deep aroma of dried apricots a little cinnamon and fragrant herbs. Like some I thought I got some smoke at first but it sweetened over time and I decided it was cinnamon and herbs. The mouthfeel is generous with medium tannins that coat the mouth and end with sharpness, reasonably taciturn overall but completely expected that for 09 at this stage. Good purity and balance that hints to some elegance when the acids resolve.

I rate it on how it 88 on how it drinks now, but I think it should rise to 90 or even 91 with some luck by 2019-2024. I notice the price is dropping on this one so if you catch it under $30 scoop it up lock it away and forget about it I don't think you will be sorry.

4/25/2014 5:58:00 PM - In a funny postscript, by pure chance nothing to do with the tasting I happened to open 3 new boxes of dried fruit later that night with some cheese: Organic dried unsulfured apricots, currants and prunes. So a took a good sniff of all of them to see what dried apricots actually smells. I learned this at a wine tasting class I took once - go smell the actual thing. And guess what - the dried apricots have a smokey edge to them layered over the fruit very distinct. Totally unexpected it. So that's it - dried apricots is the smoke many reviewers and me detected. Both my wife and I picked this out independently, it must be right. :-)

Bordeaux never ceases to amaze me after 11 years drinking this stuff, how they get totally unexpected aromas to come out of basically one grape clone in many cases. Also I learned that the 3 dried fruits in question all smell radically different .... so beware of pro reviewers that say "dried fruits" I see that all the time. They need to get specific! :)
