Sunday, July 25, 2004 - Dark blue in the glass. Intense scents of flowers, cherries, cranberries, and pencil shavings coming out of the glass. Largely structured with marvellous density and fatness, a model texture of velvet and silk, intensity of flavour and complexity that makes the head spin. It's like a buzz in the head and tunnel vision to follow. Impeccable structure and delightfully intense flavours of red fruits, this is another example of the perfect marriage of power and grace. The wine was in the glass for a good two hours, and it just got better and better. Being fully aware that Grand Cru Burgundy should age for 25+ years, I found myself asking whether a wine needs to taste better than this. I can only agree with Robert Parker on his recent scoring of this wine. Not sure whether his score relates to potential, but mine related to present day drinking. I've got two bottles left, and it will be hard to keep my hands off those. Of course, this note of advice is for people who enjoy primary wines. Soft, and seductive this wine is, with a finish that goes on forever. An easy call.
