Friday, July 8, 2016 - Color: medium-deep (almost opaque) ruby core -> medium ruby rim. Beautiful aromatics right on PnP with a relatively low score on the Cayuse funk-o-meter; bouquet improved over time and peaked at one hour plus to my mind. Bouquet of leather, roasted brisket and sirloin slathered with dark molasses BBQ, char and smoke . . . my god it's like a Texas steakhouse in this glass! Toss in a few green and black olives and some blackberry treacle and you've pretty much got the nose. Palate is a smooooth umami slippery slide; black fruit, wet rocks, horse-hoof earth and roasted meat goodness, this presents as quite Northern-Rhone to me. Long, long finish with low-level smooth, fine tannins, 14.9% Etoh well contained and good acidity . . . I'm pretty much smitten with this. I think it would probably stand out in a flight of Northern Rhones due to some sweetness in the fruit/lack of austerity but I'm really not finding that a drawback tonight. Certainly enjoyable now with a 1+ hour decant; gotta try throwing this blind at the tasting group!
