PNP. Crimson red color, little sign of age. Just a small amount of fine sediment. Mid neck fill, the cork was soaked to the top, with some mold under the capsule. Bright red cherry nose with a little bit of dusty spice. Full palate, more cranberry than cherry, high acid but not shrill, rustic texture, deep fruit but has an austere, clenched finish that shows juicy flavor recurrence and some dryness. I think this needs more time to unlock. If I was guessing blind I would say this is a 96 based on the acid.

1999 Grand Cru Red Burgundy by Nicolas Potel (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Nose of earth, wet gravel road after a Spring Rain Shower, black cherry jam preserves, cranberry, and spring flowers, same on the palate, big body, good acid, rich fruit, at its best, lots of power, touch austere, tasty, will easily keep another ten years, no reason to wait, enjoy it now, and a medium/long finish. Second place to the Charmes Chambertin today. Uploaded bottle image.

Something off to me in the nose. I thought perhaps some TCA, however others did not think so. Some red fruits and earth but muted in the nose. A bit out of balance to me.

Still young at 12 years old, austere and minerally as one would expect, powerfully structured, but there seems to be a lack of charm, fruit and fruit - it is the dry and vegetal Potel style again and I do not like it. It is a terroir wine, you can taste the red Vosne earth, but it lacks Grand Cru finesse and power.

Very masculine and tight but with air this struts its stuff. Drunk alongside a 98 Potel Suchots it's clearly showing its pedigree, the depth of fruit and texture on the palate are impressive.

Ruby colored slightly tinged at the rim with cherry, raspberry and spice aromas and flavor. A smooth silky structured finish. Lovely. Even better after an hour in the glass.

Caught this one at a time when it just seems to be turning a corner. The 1999 vintage stayed primary for so long that it's exciting to finally see some development and get a sense of the real shape of the wines. Here, the fruit's already shed most of its gloss and sweetness and taken on the patina of maturity, but it hasn't yet developed much additional flavor so it tastes more like anonymous adolescent red Burgundy in general than Echezeaux. That said, it's still a classy drink. Even if it doesn't offer much distinction in terms of flavor it has the breadth of a grand cru, and given enough airtime the tannin composes itself into something pretty finessed.

1999 Grand Cru Red Burgundy by Nicolas Potel (Yan's China Bistro, Walnut Creek, Ca.): Tasted two Red Burgundy blind with Mike-second place based on tie breaker of best wine tonight, lacked the power and intensity of the Charmes Chambertin. Lovely young dark fruit, sweet violet perfume and earthy nose on palate entry, on the palate very rich and earthy taste of cranberries with lovely acid and richness, needs three years or so to mature, probably merit a higher score of three points.

Aroma of berries and mocha with some mature notes poking through. Palate is full and somewhat tart, starting to show some maturity. OK but not great.
