Palate: medicinal cherry, bitter herbs, cigar, mineral; long finish of medicinal cherry, plum, bitter herbs, leather, graphite; dry; medium+ body; medium- astringent tannin; medium+ acidity that sticks out
Overall thoughts: This doesn't do it for me. The flavor is somewhat medicinal and bitter while the acid sticks out and the wine is a bit sour overall. Not simple, but it's linear. Not well balanced. Mediocre wine.

When I first tasted this wine over a year ago, I was blown away. Rating not as high today, but still a delicious wine. Charle's combo CS/Syrahs are just wonderful. Deep Garnet color with medium meniscus and long slow legs. Alc is 14.5. Dark fruit and power on the nose. Blackberry, game and smoky tar. Palate proves more complex. Blackberry joined by persistent dark cherry, which swirls with mint, mocha, crispy bacon fat which turn to spices on the finish. Lots of acidity accompanied by worthy tannins. The Cab just supports the many flavors of the syrah.

This one is still singing sweet music. Black fruit (berries) and tons of dark chocolate. This still has some life if stored properly. This was our last bottle of the K Vintners Ovide and Roma wines from 2008 & 2009. Dang!!

Very dark red with medium plus to high optical density. Very intense nose, with medium complexity, showing cassis, plum, raspberry, and some light sweet spice. Also some menthol, mint, and green pepper with a bit of air. Dense on the palate with medium acidity and full body, it is dry and has well-integrated tannins that just provide structure, but are quite smooth. Flavours on the attack show dense, ripe fruits (plum, blackberry, cassis) that stay full-on during the midpalate, which brings in some floral spice and a bit of earthiness (vegetable peels). The finish is smokey, with some green and black pepper, and medium in length. A very nice mouthfeel on this wine, with a concentrated feel that maintains some restraint. Flavours are medium to medium plus in intensity, and not super complex (although there is enough going on here for at lot interest to be sure). Overall, very well-balanced and well-made wine. Certainly new-world in profile, but not an over-the-top fruit bomb. Nice bottle!

This big, bold Cab/Syrah blend (67/33) evokes dark juicy berries, dark chocolate, and a bit of tar on the finish. Nicely structured with a rich, viscous mouth-feel. Thoroughly enjoyable overall and on par with the 2009 Roma and El Jefe which we've both tried.

Even better than I remember it from about a year ago. This was a beautiful balance of fruit - blueberry, ripe plums, and blackberry - and mineral. Bold without bowling you over. Long finish. Just wish Charles Smith had gotten some of this fruit for the 2010 vintage; alas this is my last bottle.

Decanted 2 hours, consumed over 2 hours. Dark purple to black. Generous nose of dark red and black fruit. Concentrated but not heavy on the palate with complex black fruit, olive, hint of earth and touch of diesel. Balanced and despite the untamed, extravagant flavor profile manages polish on the medium-long finish. Drink with decant or hold.

Wow, the 2009 Ovide is another smash hit by Charles Smith! This massive wine brings tons of black fruit reduction, sweet currant, green olive, mocha and wild herbs. Full-bodied covering every inch of our palate with dense complex layers and round polished tannins that make your mouth water. This picks some dark chocolate notes that linger on the long delicious finish. This remarkable wine is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Syrah from the En Cerise vineyard; freewater cobbley loam over gravel sand, an ancient dried riverbed located on the floor of the Walla Walla Valley, biodynamically farmed. Planted in 1997. (Drink 2013-2025) - JD

Tasting room visit- 9/9. Notes of blueberry, lavender, cedar, and mineral on the nose. On top of fruit there are intensely layered flavors of mineral, cassis, currant, tea, vanilla, allspice. Nice smooth feel and round tannins. Medium-long finish. The most complex wine of the lineup I tasted, and nice balance.
