Great Cornas Virtual Tasting (Chicagoland IL): Black cherry, licorice and roasted beef aromas, similar flavors with slightly less intensity. Rounded and softer than the other vintages, still showing wonderful balance, even if with much less concentration.

Perfect spot. Nose is all blood, iron and whiff of the barnyard. Palate has that tang of maturing Cornas but still showing elegant dark red fruits. There’s a hint of autumn on the finish, which suggests, like the largely resolved tannins, that this is a wine to be drunk over next 3-4 years at peak.

Pausing for the Cause 2018 (Chicago, IL): "Like someone mixed olive brine with coffee," but far less off-putting. Rustic and heady, with some really nice dark fruit on the nose, there's a very nice lightness on the palate at the same time thanks to a lively vein of acidity. Fully resolved and ready to go now. This is in my own personal Rhone sweet spot.

Une grande syrah rhodanienne, fraiche et intense, moins velours qu'une cote rotie et pourtant racée, pourvue d'une élégance cintrée et d'une énergie maitrisée. 92/93

Northern Rhone Offline (Bar Agricole, San Francisco): Double decanted and tasted. Lovely medium ruby with slight bricking appropriate for its age; nose is moderately aromatic, red fruit, some meaty and gamey notes, slight white pepper; palate is medium bodied, superb bright acidity throughout without being shrill, iodine, fresh red berry fruit throughout, medium well integrated tannins, almost elegant texture throughout; medium-length finish. Nose is nice, classic Northern Rhone but somewhat young and reticent, palate overall is very young but well balanced and shows promise. I'm curious what some oxygen will add to the wine. 92-93 6 hours slow ox: highly aromatic nose, much improved, spice, plenty of fruit. Lovely wine, more rustic in structure and style than the Chave Hermitages, but it held its own. Very nice. 93-95 Day 2: held up well without really any significant changes positive or negative.

Nothing like Chicago hospitality...; 4/6/2016-4/10/2016: What a great flight alongside the '01 Jamet - that was a classic example of Côte-Rôtie; but this is proper Cornas with its intense dark fruit, leathery and briny notes, and a density on the palate and spine of firm tannin that suggest it still has a lot of time ahead of it. Time brings out more meaty flavours and other savoury depth, but it's still very young.

Salil does Chicago 2; 4/6/2016-4/10/2016 (Chicago, IL): It was perhaps not too good to have this wine next to the 01 Jamet, which totally wiped the floor with this perfect example of old-school Cornas. There's a wild gameyness to the nose of this wine, as well as a heap of black fruit. With a little bit of swirling, you get a little more of the olive notes, but this wine is all about rusticity. Very dark and tannic, but there's ample acidic lift here to keep this wine enjoyable.

Very good Cornas with, like 1997, more graciousness than in many vintages. Full/medium bodied with expressive nose and palate, it showed cherry infused fruit together with lively acidity and hints of grilled meat, olives and metallic leather on a much more velvety texture than the matt feel of old and was supported on the finish by firm but well covered tannins. Some feel that the present generation at Clape together with other producers like Allemand are losing the true Cornas character by excessively civilising their wines but I love them like this.

A Syrah Friday at Domaine (Domaine Wine Storage, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose just screams Northern Rhone (though not necessarily Cornas) and is loaded with black fruits, bacon fat, black cherries, tobacco, leather, and bits of black olives. The nose is very complex, but it doesn't seem to get out of second gear.
Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The structure is certainly there, but it isn't overpowering with black fruits, bacon fat, black olives, leather, black pepper, and some spice notes.
Overall: This is a gorgeous Clape that has a rustic elegance to it. I think I did want more of the savage side that Clape can normally show, but this was still a joy to drink.

Medium-dark red; young looking. Energetic mid-life nose. Shows some of everything true for both an old fashioned Cornas and a little bit of a Cote Rotie's floral naturel: olive brine, menthol, tar, roast beef, red cherry, hyper-ripe plum, black pepper, violets, red bell pepper. Wonderfully complex. Medium-light tannin, balanced acidity. Easy to drink, open for business, and balanced to suggest safe keeping for another ten years age too. Medium finish. Bottle #4 of six.
Cornas tasting @ Jeroboam Club (Bristol): Impressive nose, focus, complexity, gamey, violets, and spice. This is really text book Syrah, with crushed peppercorn, white pepper, and spices. Slightly drying on the long finish. Will go on for a few years yet.

If you love a wine with power but also an unmistakable sense of place, this is everything you're looking for. Just awesome. Aromatics that plant you directly in the soil of the Northern Rhone. Wild herbs, olive tapenade, black pepper, lavender, blackberry, grilled beef. Long on the palate, with a focus like a husband watching a ballgame while his wife tries to break his concentration. Just tuned like a laser. And still quite primary, which is surprising for the vintage. Drink? Yep. Hold? Sure, for a while.

Medium-dark red-brown. Comforting, warm aroma of leather, plum, pepper beef roast with slight background smoke, floral. A mercaptan note eventually blows off. Medium-light tannin, balanced acidity. Balanced to the fat side, the wine presents solid core of baked fruit and meat flavor with black pepper. Finishes a little dilute, compared to the the amount of pulpy fruit in the mouth. A good wine that gets better with air, increasingly. Bottle #3 of six.

Clape Cornas Vertical (RN74, San Francisco): Warmer and sweeter profile than any of the prior wines, with comparatively in-yo-face bacon-on-the-campfire character. A less classic vintage than 2001 with brighter color, brighter and simpler fruit, smoother finish, and less brett. Won't last forever but very good today.

not a great showing, or perhaps not as great of a wine as i had thought (more likely). it is elegant for Cornas, and for the vintage, but especially after an hour in a decanter, the sweetness seems not to be from fruit, but from something like brown sugar or caramel. Still, lovely black pepper corn smells and a tarry sensation on the finish.

First impression was of a pronounced wood-smokiness on the nose, with leather and a bit of olive. Then came some rusty iron notes, but the wine is very clean (no barnyard). The ripeness level is good and I find a sufficient amount of acidity, too. Not as deep and complex as a great vintage, and not as wild as Verset's Cornas (my personal benchmark). Doesn't have what I'd call lots of fruitiness yet it's by no means dried out or shriveled up. The tannins are noticeable but mostly resolved. A far cry from the black-strap wine Cornas was long reputed to be, this has an elegance (not daintiness) about it that's quite pretty. Good wine.

Absolutely wonderful. Straight forward, and an easy wine for A. Clape, but oh, how nice; pure syrah, peppery, firm, clean. Less complex than other vintages, but it will surely live 5years+ from now, both tannins and fruit is alive.

89 pts

At Gravetye Manor: the wine we actually ordered was Verset, but the label looked familiar and it was only once we'd started drinking that I realised we'd been served the Clape which was much cleaner than the Verset would have been, deep damsons, blackberries and tobacco - very accessible, lovely brambly syrah.

Had this straight out of the bottle at lunch (Fortnum & Mason). Great aromatics of raspberry, bacon and a hint of grass. On the palate it was tannic and acidic at first, but after 10 minutes of air rounded off very nicely with nice texture and length. You can drink this with pleasure now (30 minutes decanting recommended) or wait 2-3 years.

At River Cafe, Brooklyn with rack of lamb and duck breast. Lovely deep ruby color. Opened and poured vigorously. Very tight at first but developed beautifully during the evening. The nose began to fill the glass as soon as it was poured and had a wonderful earthy, peppery note. Very well-balanced though not quite as big fruit as some other years and a strong finish. An excellent complement to the duck and perhaps a tad strong for the duck.

Less complex than other vintages, but it will surely live 5years+ from now, both tannins and fruit is alive.

fantastic wine! built slowly over the course of an hour and a half. delicious fruit out of the gates, peppery and intense, but with time it really blossomed, expansive flavors of orange and leather and soil. i think the palate is mostly resolved - if i had this wine i would drink it over the next few years. so delicious.

Some bricking at rim with dense purple core. Red berry fruit up front with dark meaty, tobacco nose behind it. Medium bodied with medium plus acidity, fruit is fading, drying tannins with medium length finish. Drink now.

Northern Rhone Visit, May 2009; 5/14/2009-5/17/2009 (Condrieu, Ampuis, Cornas, Tain -- France): Tasted at the Domaine with Pierre-Marie Clape himself. Clape says this should be drunk soon (low acidity year). At first some vegetal notes worried me, but on the palate there was gorgeous fruit, violet wild mushroom.

France Trip Part 2 - Northern Rhône; 6/18/2006-6/20/2006: Tasted at the domaine w/ Pierre-Marie Clape. Initially a little reticent on the nose. Cherries and smoke. Very balanced and harmonious. Good minerality. Excellent.
