good not great showing. Well delineated flavors and aromas, with soil, orange marmalade and white flowers. Pretty and fine, but a bit into the backside of its preferred curve. Color and fill were vg. Drink now.

From half and another excellent showing. Didn’t have the sweetness of the ’97, but had equally rich fruit and a bit more dimension that age gives. There’s a hint of lanolin to the nose and plenty of dried apricot and honey. It has vanilla spice and such great complexity as it evolves with every sip. The finish is clean and bright and leaves a calling card of dried fruits and honey.

Held to it for 32 years and multiple moves. Didn't expect much after the subpar storage conditions. Finally opened for special occasion. Cork disintegrated and initial oxidized notes. Within an hour, it turned to something special. Overtones of dark caramel, almond and butterscotch. Not overly sweet and yet satisfying. Left little for the next day and it was still consistent. Very enjoyable and a life journey experience.

Chez Garard older Zinfandels and Cali Cabs: Unbelievable youthful color for a 42 year old btl of wine. Excellent all they way thru dessert, Even after copious amounts of wine, this was singing. No bitterness on the finish. Just pure deliciousness. This is the year I met my wife and she is still so young to me. BUY/Drink if you must.

Good with typical tertiary Sauternes aromas around apricot, smoke, honey, some mushroom funk as well. However, it could benefit from some more freshness on the palate.

From half bottle, this was in the zone. There are toffee notes along with a hint of vanilla, some dried apricot and tinned peach. It is fleshy, with moderate sweetness, lovely balance and some fruit rind bitterness adding freshness to the long finish.

Bring out the old familiar friend. Classic d’Yquem. Some brûlée. Dried apricots, forals and pollen, orange peel, spicy. The palate is on the dry side a bit, with some apricots, dried fruit, brown sugar and brûlée. Not a historic Yquem but wonderful and just great for the occasion. Not high acid but the alcohol provides good body and structure. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5/20.

Over dinner, no formal notes. Tropical fruit, honey, nuts, spices on the nose. On the palate rich and unctuous, but also fresh and elegant. Spicy finish, good intensity and length. 92-94?

Deep golden color. Caramel, pineapple, honey, apricot and agave on the nose. This is ripe but feels weightless, with bright acidity and a light grip on the cheeks. It is balanced and in complete harmony. Good persistence on the long finish. It may not be the best vintage of d’Yquem but this is a lovely bottle.
The 79 has improved markedly over the past ten years. Rich brownish golden color with delicious spice and butter sweet roll, the honeyed apricot and peach, ripe and round, caress the palate and fill the mouth with balance and pleasure. Finish is real and lingering. No complaints.

The Other Great French Blancs: Champagne and Sauternes (Wink Restaurant, Austin, Texas): A very nice d'Yquem that has little presence in the American market, it had good aromatics of sugar and smoke, with some herbal and brandy notes, and mouth-cleansing acidity. Quite viscous, it had a sweet palate of apple and tart pear, mandarin orange, honeysuckle, nutty caramel, almond skin, tobacco, petrol, spice, and some citrus. Had a bitter note on finish. Voted second best in a strong flight of Sauternes.

nose: nice and aromatic nose of melon rinds, marmalade, blood oranges and bits of sweet pear tones. Very good depth but lacking something on the nose though it has the d'yquem class
taste: very well balanced medium feel. The feel is actually rather dry with medium acidity and tones of melon rinds, nectarines, marmalade and blood oranges. Good depth though the dryness is a bit different
overall: Certainly shows off the class that d'yquem brings. It was interesting to see how the RS basically pulled back and this wine came off as a more dry wine.

Monolithic on its own, but took on much greater dimensions when drunk with the foie gras. Beautiful apricot and nectarine notes. The acidity was almost non-existent but appeared when it was needed most--with the food.

Gold in color what a glorious bottle and so generous of Heidi and Angel to share! A nose you could smell for hours; that simply superb scent of rot, fruit and acid---oh I wish this was in my Christmas Stocking! The finish was endless and offered flavors of rich ripe apricots that later melded into honeysuckle. Drink thru 2020+

Pre-Christmas Duck and 2001 Barolo Dinner (basecadet's House): Amber colour. Aromas of honey, apricot, spice, and orange rind. Full-bodied, perfect balance of sweetness and acidity with the palate showing replays from the nose. Long finish, 50-60s, with white flowers and more honey, apricot, and spices.

Decanted this wine on New Years Eve (12/31/2005). First paired it with the classic Fois Gras. Saved some for the cheeses later in the meal. The color first of all was a beautiful amber gold honey. Just what you would expect from an aged gem like this. The reason I decided to drink this was because I figured that it may be starting to slide down hill by now considering vintage (but I was wrong). On the nose there was still unbelievably some fresh fruit, but mostly honey, caramel and dried apricots. Smells like heaven..On the palate, much of what was perceived on the nose was there. Dried apricots, honey, caramel, nuts, and good good acidity. In fact amazing acidity for a wine of this age. Still in perfect balance. The length is + 80 seconds, and maybe more! Their was a slight, but pleasant, bitterness. I actually think this could have sat for more years and still maitained its "youthfullness". I guess this should come as no surprise from this Château! Wow, wow, wow!

This was botrytis light. Golden honey color, nose of apricots, vanilla and guava. Good mouth feel but lacks the weight of a strong vintage. On the palate, some honeyed orange and pineapple notes. A good , fully mature Yquem but certainly not great.

Nose of honey, apricot, pear, and caramel, same on the palate, medium/big body, darker in the glass then the last 2 bottles, Christmas present to myself, Kathy and I enjoyed with pate, rich, tasty, lovely to sip and savor, just enough honey to make you wish for more to enjoy, long finish.

3 Chateau d' Yquem and 4 Chateau Cheval Blanc (Walnut Creek, Ca.): My 50th Birthday Party at Rotisseria on Main, this was the first vintage that I bought for the cellar because friends claimed it was a poor vintage and would trade me for Caymus or Dunn, great, rich, apricot, pear nose, more of the same on the palate, nice rich but medium taste compared to its peers tonight, medium body, very fresh, bright, rich finish tonight. My #3 of 3 Yquem served.

A very small Yquem tasting of '78, '79, '80 and '81: gentle fat, good botrytis, refined midtaste with concentration, firm but ripe acidity and a long aftertaste; good future.
