Took this bottle on a trip to FL. It was good, straightforward red cherry fruit and a hint of spice, probably nearing the end of it's drinking window. Drink now.

Simple, as in "simply delicious". Quite a difference in bottles this one to the one I had 6 months ago.
This is still not the most complex pinot in the world, but this bottle was hitting on all cylinders re: pleasurable drinking. Good fruit, without the "muddiness" I found in the prior bottle. I wonder if perhaps bottle variation, or serving variation - I served this one straight from the cellar, relatively cool. I don't think this has legs to go much further - drink soon.

No detailed notes. My wife, a fan of delicate Burgs, surprisingly enough loved this. I did not.
I found this to be a bit "one note" and simplistic. A bit of muddy depth without a notion of offsetting complexity. Drinkable - yes, and pleasant enough if not particularly compelling at this stage in its evolution. My sense is that this might be a bit past its peak drinking window, with both fruit and structure on the wane. Which is disappointing since apparently I have another 5 bottles floating around somewhere in the cellar.

My last bottle. Noticed my note from 2013 regarding how light it was then. Planned for it to be light this time and so it turned out to be an enjoyable bottle to start the evening with. Bright nose of cherry and some minerality. Flavors follow with a light body and pleasant medium finish. 90pts.

For an "entry level" Copain, this is outstanding. Bright cherry, red currant, dill, and hint of earth. It is not as rich, complex, and structured as their other pinots, but for the price, this is wonderful. A great QPR. Nice acidity. Some other tasting notes suggest this is at peak, or at least not going to improve much with age. I agree that it is very drinkable now, but I do think (based on how much richer this bottle is on day 2) that another 2-3 yrs, and maybe up to 5, will benefit.

Nice combo of CA Pinot fruit and oak. A bit sweet on the taste, even though I assume it is dry. Not necessarily easy to find the right temp and the right amount of air where things are in balance, though very nice in that window.

Wine is better from an aesthetic standpoint than the les Voisins of the same year, but this is a slightly fruitier wine albeit with a slight green peeper flaw that doesnt exist in the higher end wine.

This is a quite dark Pinot from Anderson valley in Sonoma it is a darker garnet colored Pinot with a nose of raspberry, forest floor, vanilla and mint. This wine in the mouth is of medium body with a sweet layered fruit then a touch of acid and tannin on the finish. The wine sits lovely on the palate and is really tasty. This is a little gem of a Pinot.

The wine is a light to medium ruby red color. The slightly reserved nose has cherries, baking spices, raspberries, orange zest, minerals, and a bit of earthiness and smoke. This is barely medium body with soft, silky tannins, and very good acidity. Much more open and robust on the palate with tart cherries, juicy raspberries, spice and some earthiness taking turns leading the charge. The finish has decent length with a touch of orange zest and spice lingering nicely. This is a very nice, nuanced, California Pinot with very good balance.

Mistakenly opened this bottle. I was going for the Copain Les Voisins Syrah and totally didn't read what I grabbed. Grabbing by cork symbology is just not wise. For a Syrah it was just not up to par.. Of course, it was not a Syrah so that eased my confusion.. I should learn to read someday.
Anyhow, as a PN, I found it overly on the light side this time. Light color, med(-) body, a little earth and very tame fruit. Almost watery this time.. I have had these in the past and liked them more. Not the match I had in mind for pulled pork so it may have suffered slightly from the mistaken pairing.. 86pts.

The wine is a light to medium ruby red color. The slightly shy nose eventually has earthy raspberries, baking spices, cherries, and a faint herbal note. This is barely medium body with soft, silky tannins and good acidity. Much more open on the palate than the nose with sweet, juicy cherries and baking spices, some earthiness comes in on the backend. The finish has decent length with a slight herbal note again making an appearance. A bit more complexity would be nice but this is an outstanding week night Pinot.

Pop and poured and served blind with three other Pinots. All four wines were placed in brown paper bags (the bottles, not the wine) and labelled with the names of active volcanoes. This was Mount St. Helens, if I recall. This shows an earthy an thin side with a fair amount of acidity and tartness but paired well with cheese (Vermont creamy goat cheese and cheddar in particular). It did not fare well against the 2010 Sojourn Wohler, with its fruit and sweetness, but stood well as a wine to be paired with food.

The wine is a light to medium ruby color. The sexy nose has cherries, baking spices, raspberry, with a touch or earthiness and a slight herbal note. This is medium body with soft, ripe tannins and good acidity. The palate has nice, sweet, juicy cherries complimented by spices, earthiness, and the herbal elements. The finish has decent length and shows a touch of spicy oak. A very nice everyday Pinot that could use a bit more complexity to reach the next level.

Pop and Pour with balsamic marinated pork and mushrooms. Light to medium color, nice nose of fruit with a touch of sweetness. Smooth and balanced. Nice fruit. Perhaps a touch light and simple. The medium finish adds a touch of complexity with the fruit, a touch of velvety sweetness and a very light spice note. Even though it was not a complex wine I found it to be a very very enjoyable bottle. Unassuming wine done well and at a good price point for an easy-drinking quality PN.

Similar notes to last time. Initial strong flavor, mostly fruit, with a slightly flat mid-palate, leading to a somewhat complex finish. Good, but not quite as together as I'd like.

Similar quality to the previous bottle. Smoky pinot berry, warm but tolerably balanced alcohol, quite tart. Drink now or maybe allow the acidity to soften over the next 2-4 years. Nice value.

Doughy, fruity, oaky nose. More dusty oak on the palate, with nice, slightly tart pinot berry. Medium finish. Lightish but pleasant throughout, finely balanced for easy drinking now, with unobtrusive alcohol. Drink now or hold a couple years. Nice value.

12.9% alcohol. This has developed a bit more smoothness and texture in the past six months. Pretty nose of black cherry and earth. In the mouth, velvety and precise, with black cherry, spice, and earth notes. Good acidity and a tight-knit finish. Delicious, easy-drinking, and precise. A-

PnV & let air from 1.5 to 3+ hours over course of consuming. Crimson hue. Initially subdued yet emerging aromas after some air of fresh cherries & raspberry and eventually blackberry after about 3 hours, spice, orange peel, pine & strawberry spumoni. Likewise flavor palate with herbal & earthy notes. Nice amount of acidity, soft tannins, medium bodied, dry lingering finish. Nice entry level PN that is showing well now. (89+)

Beautiful sweetly spiced nose, with some candied cherries, too. The aromas almost overwhelm; just delightful. Brown sugar, dessert-y potpourri on the mouth, with dark, forested cherries and a tiny bit of cherry cola. Woodsy. Really pleasant and soft through the mid-palate. A superstar.

Not much nose, maybe a slight bit of fruit with something else there similar to novacaine? On the palate, decent cherry notes with a hint of strawberry and a bit of red earth. Bright wi good acidity, but not much else there, maybe a bit of spice but hard to find. Tasty but not in the top 5 pinots in my cellar. Glad i tried it, though!

Pinot Noir - Mendocino and Sonoma Counties (The Wine Country, Signal Hill, CA): $25.99. Not much on the nose but a little astringent aroma reminiscent of rubbing alcohol. Soft on the attack with some bright candied fruit as the acidity kicks in after the mid-palate. Nicely balanced but lacks some depth. I'd like to see this priced more as an entry level offering (which it is) below $20. Nice enough, but at $25, this is not at all compelling to me.

Hate to say it but very burgundian in style. On the fuller bodied side of 12.9%abv. Probably could age a bit but why bother? Under diam cork so that wouldnt hold up to more than a few years. Drink now cause its delicious now.

Cherry and raspberry fruit aromas with a sappy, robust and dark skew. Very juicy aroma profile. While this clocks in at 12.9%ABV, the body doesn't come across as the lowest alcohol domestic red I've had. At the same time no attention is drawn to the alc on the palate. Fruit presence is up front, but earthy elements there too. This bottle was opened last night. Nice acid and opening to some dried floral exposure on the palate.

Very elegant. Tons of complexity, without anything that's overly assertive or begging to be noticed. Definite barrel-aged character in the nose, with woody notes that smell like the inside of a spice chest, with accents of cocoa and cherry blossom. Soft, delicate fruit in the palate, with raspberry and cherry tones dominating. At 2.5 years old, there's still a healthy amount of bright acidity, but it seems to be rounding out, providing a silky finish the integrates well with the slight tannins present in the finish. Lovely to drink now, and should continue to be so for at least another 2-4 years.

This took a couple hours to open up. But when it did, it was all about classic CA PN fruit, an elegance and softness to this. I'm not sure if I'd pay close to $30, as I think the name is raising the price, but a really nice, well balanced Pinot Noir.

Translucent dark ruby in the glass. Big red fruit, gentle spice, flowers, wet stone on the nose. In the mouth: strawberry, cranberry, spice, rare meat. Feels balanced overall in the mouth with good fruit, acidity, refined tannins, and some minerality. Finishes just a bit short. Good value California Pinot at under $25.

Decanted about 30 minutes. Light to medium ruby color. Raspberry, cherry, baking spices, some earthiness, nice minerality, and a slight herbal note on the soft and pleasing nose. Barely medium body with soft, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. Silky fruit and spice on the palate with an herbal note coming in on the backend. Very lithe on the palate with absolutely no excess weight, shows wonderful balance. Medium length finish, which will probably fill out with some additional cellar time allowing the acidity to fully integrate. Drinking very nicely today, but very young. Warrants at least 6 months additional cellar time.

Pleasant nose of dark fruit, earth, and mineral. The flavors included raspberry, plum, with a hint of black pepper. Well-balanced and light bodied. The finish was of moderate length with a small amount of complexity. The wine paired well with caprese salad, adding a fruity note. Overall a solid pinot.

Popped and poured. 12.9% abv, off to a good start. A purplish tint to this red wine, appears light violet at the rim. The nose is dark cherry, vanilla and strawberry. There is a creamy smell to the nose, almost like a hazlenut coffee creamer. The wine has such a lively and energetic mouthfeel, due to the taut acid backbone that delivers the cherry and strawberry fruit so precisely. This wine was just opened, but the tannins are so supple and well integrated, no harshness, only velvet and just a hair of spice on the medium length, mineral-driven finish. I would say this "entry level" (ha) Pinot is just hitting it's stride, and will drink oh so well for another 5-7 years. Marvelous bottle, great QPR.

12.9% alcohol. Easy drinking and very nice. Dark color compared to the relatively red-fruited character of the palate. Earthy and spice, with strong acidity. 12.9% alcohol. Opened two hours before drinking but not decanted. Drunk over five hours. This is a fascinating wine. It's forward enough to drink right now, but as it gets more air, it really starts to become refined and detailed. Black cherry fruit, lots of earth, light spice, and a violet floral note. It's got a strong acidic bite right now and some tannins on the finish, so it definitely needs more time. But this is just delicious now and shows the balance and elegance that is the hallmark of Copain the past five years. A-

Popped and poured, served with dinner, consumed over 3+ hours. Light floral with a hint of spice on the nose. Nice, light and agile on the palate with cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, moving into a slight baking spice tone. Good balance with the acids and tannins. Definitely not a big sunshine Cali Pinot but oh so enjoyable, light on its feet and an excellent QPR.

12.9% alcohol. This really is drinking beautifully already. Dark red color. A somewhat muted nose of black cherry, earth, and minerals. In the mouth, the texture is the real draw here. A really nice Pinot in a unique style - not Cali, not Burg, not Pacific NW, not NZ, but something different, like a little island such as Maldives. I enjoy the modest, balanced approach - this is not austere, as there is ample fruit, but the restraint in extraction creates a great harmony with the sous bois on the nose and minerality on the finish.

Copain's entry level Anderson Pinot. 12.9% alcohol. Medium ruby red. Expressive aromas of red fruit and spice.
On the palate, cherries, rasberries and blackberries, asian spice. Very well balanced, excellent mouthfeel, good fruit intensity, excellent acid backbone and focus, lingering aftertaste.
Copain '09 Anderson Pinots are superb across the Board. This is a good effort at twice the price - not just a good Pinot, a good Copain Pinot. You don't usually think of Copain as a value producer, but I may have to reassess. This is excellent!

I wish more California pinots were made like this. This is proof in spades excellent california Pinot can be made under $30. Pop and pour, delicious from the first sip. Decidedly savory and lacking anything sweet or cloying. Apple peel and faint herbs on the nose Herbal notes weave in and out of the darker fruits. Seamless and balanced. Finishes with a warm apple pie spices. This alone will make the case minimum per year a easy. You could finish a bottle of this and not even realize it.

Fruity nose, hint of heat (initially served at ~74 degrees, absent at 70), with blackberries and black cherry with a liquor edge. Palate is lush and soft, fine tannin backbone and crushed berry finish with a herbal/stem quality on the short to medium finish. Plenty of acidity for lift. A little thin on the mid palate and average complexity. Still, nice value for the price. Compared to the Alesia, lacked an element of delicateness, less floral, darker fruit profile. Seems like it’s for shorter term drinking.

Listed alcohol 12.9%. As compared to the 2009 Copain Les Voisins, which is th north end Anderson blend, this Tous is a bit lighter in weight, has less depth and concentration to it. I'd call it gentler, more subtle with crushed cherry, apple, much less raspberry then the Les Voisins. Has similar minerality but less acidity. Hint of vanilla. This wine drinks fine now and I don't think it will be a long ager, which I think the Voisins is better positioned to be. But with the terrific QPR on this wine, in the 20s for pinot, I'm not sure why anyone would age it--drink and enjoy now.
