Very old-world style Syrah with savory & earthy notes of smoked meat & iron/minerality. Peppery & herbal. Not much fruitiness here, but that's not a bad thing. This took 30-60 minutes to open up from a pretty reductive state (possibly due to screw-cap) - it initially seemed rather off balance with possible VA issues, but that was remedied by several minutes of exposure to oxygen. A good food wine with a nice acid backbone.

One of the truly great Syrahs being made in California. Rust red color. Smokey, earthy, meats on the nose. Smooth purple plums, that never melt into jelly, mix with lots of pepper and cooked meat. But still very balanced with balanced acidity. In many ways, this is American Cornas.

(13.5%) Let me just say upfront that I have been blown away by Bonny Doon’s recent release of Syrah based wines and am yet again smitten with this one. It starts savory/earthy/meaty with dense, smoked plums backed by a peppered, stony minerality before the fruit fades leaving chalky tannins on a lasting, delicious finish. Once again Randall splits the needle with a beautiful balance of old and new world here that is likely to please all. At $35 (if this happens to be in your price range) you pay the full price for admission but you do get your money’s worth… Fantastic stuff!

Another quality Syrah from Bonny Doon. Some smoke and forest floor on the nose. Rich blueberry and blackberry flavors on the palate. There is a touch of meatiness there as well. A nice amalgam of old and new world influences. Give it at least an hour's decant if you are drinking now.

Made with 100% Syrah from the Alamo Creek vineyard in San Luis Obispo County this old-world style Syrah is luscious purple in colour. The nose is mainly savoury with meaty and peppery aromas. The palate shows dark berry fruits and herbacious characters. Full bodied, smooth and with a lovely long finish. 572 cases produced.

CELLAR SELECTION!
Even better than when I tasted it on 2/2/2013 at 94pts.
All my tasting notes from 2/2/2013 are still there, but there is a growing richness to the black fruit that puts this wine into even better balance.
