Dark reddish purple with slight bricking towards the rim. Aromas of cassis, black plums, camphor, cedar and pressed violets on the nose. A medium-full bodied palate shows sweet-savory black fruits, hint of black olive tapenade and tobacco, good acidity and gritty and drying tannins on the finish.

Wonderful Magaux. Great Vintage. Perfumed, crushed matured fruit, balsamic and sanguine taste and aroma, medium plus acidity, medium plus body and balanced in all aspects. Drink now or in another 6 years.

This bottle was absolutely amazing. Hallmark notes of cassis, tobacco, and scorched earth and with the nerve and complexity you wish from a mature claret. In a perfect stage right now, and no reason to keep.
PnP and consumed over the next 2h, 13% Alc., black berry color.
Nose: Stems, black and red cassies.
Palate: Overall very good balance, good structure, drink animating freshness, black and red berries a bit on the diffuse side, seems a little over extracted. Nice matured Bordeaux with sufficient additional reserves for further years of drinking pleasure.

Very expressive nose, a mix of red and black fruits, a touch of graphite, leather. The palate is indulgent, a bit warm on the fruit. It's very flavorful with the touch of Bordeaux elegance.
Nez très expressif mélange de fruits rouges et noirs, touche graphite, cuir. La bouche est gourmande , un peu chaleureuse sur le fruit. C'est très gourmand avec la touche de race bordelaise.

Matured Margaux at it`s best. Concentrated red colour with matured notes. Complex Cabernet driven nose, elegant, intense ripe taste. Complex, round tanins, intense and fine acidity. Need 1h to open. Perfect matured Bordeaux. Only 13% alcohol level. I drunk this Margaux over 20 years. It is still on a good level. Do not wait opening this red.

Académie des Cinquante 67th Annual Dinner: Fully mature, classical style, Cabernet and gravel, light but expressive, an elegant Giscours en pleine forme, quite delicate but lovely.

Stunning bottle. With air came structure and the ripe fruit, spicy finish was outstanding, going on as long as I’d let it. Still primary, ripe fruit notes after 23 years in bottle and the 5% cab franc in the blend really shined giving the finish some spice.

Deep ruby color. Needs to open 2 hours. Aromas of plum, blackcurrant, cigars, cedar, wet earth. Wine is dry, medium+ bodied, with medium+ acidity, velvety tannins. Taste of plums, blackcurrant, cedar, dark chocolate. Fresh and intense.

Better on the second day. The nose is fragrant with dark fruits and cassis, showing tertiary development and umami and anise. There is a lacking freshness and the overall impression is dark and sweet but not unpleasant. On the palate, the fruit is dominant, fresher than on the nose but again there is tertiary development and sweetness predominates. There is weight and intensity to the middle palate and the finish is long and clean, if astringent. Overall, a good bottle but the ripeness is the lasting character at the expense of freshness and finesse.

Vinetasters: 2000 Bordeaux (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Fairly leathery with a modest hint of brett as well. Less expressive and fruity, and in the context of the tasting, relatively austere. Some mentioned perfume, but I didn't really pick it up. Generally good acidity and balance here -- pretty textbook cabernet. My 7th, group's 9th.

Red currants and graphite today. Still shy aromas. Silky, silky. No edges. So good. I think this is at peak and with only a slow crawl down from here. I paid about $65 for this a long time ago. Very rewarding. 93

Eighth bottle from a full case purchased at auction in 2008. Pristine condition, perfect level and cork. Decanted for 90 minutes. Mature but lively appearance; lovely nose, completely classical for a mature Giscours, flowers and cigars, red berries and blackcurrants, gravel; slender palate, has lost a lot of weight, fresh and well-balanced, firm but finely textured tannins; appetisingly dry, gravelly finish. Drink soon.

Aromas of florals, wet earth, and black fruit. Tastes of blackberries, black cherries, graphite, and chocolate. Full bodied and complex with great acidity. Fully mature and smooth. Finish was long with velvety tanins. I traded a glass for a glass of Chateau Margaux 2005 with the table next to me. Both Bordeaux’s had very similar taste characteristics and each shared the same elegance that I associate with the Margaux Appellation. Both wines were outstanding and equally enjoyable. The Margaux was a little fuller and had a creamier mouthfeel. It would be hard to justify spending $500 more for the Margaux, that I would score a point higher (94).

Dark color, no signs of ageing. Fresh nose, dark fruits on the palate. There is freshness cobined with power. No need to hurry, it's at the beginning of its drinking window. Give it a few hours decant. Very good, but can still improve 93-95

Lovely. Still youthful with a long way to go. Tannic to begin but then settles down nicely with a little time in the glass. Opulent with dark red fruits and a little tarry phenolics. Grippy and long. Perfect with steak Florentine

Medium ruby, fading just a bit towards the rim. This is drinking really well, with notably complex flavors of dried blackberries, cassis and black cherries, alongside grilled chanterelle mushrooms, mint, loamy earth, toast and spice. Medium to full bodied with bright acidity and resolved tannins. Excellent.

What a beautiful wine. Not the best Margaux I have ever had but it was so refined, so together. I am sure there is more life left here, but this was drinking beautifully at this point. Nose was exceptional, with rose, tobacco, truffle. On the palette, I was struck by how well integrated this wine was at this point. Velvet.

This wine is in a good place right now, developing wonderful tertiary notes while keeping plenty of pure cassis to hold it together. Balance is good, mouth feel is quite elegant and but for a little hole in the mid palate, the finish is long and smooth. Tannins have integrated but there's enough grip to be a great food wine. I like it and am glad we opened it when we did. Could comfortably last another 3-5y, but why wait?

There are some 2000 Bordeaux that are in the zone, and this is one of them. It hasn’t changed from my bottle 2 years ago. A cornucopia of aromas. Red fruit, black olive, cedar, and tobacco. The palate starts out lush with plum, cedar, fig. I’ll try to hold off opening my last bottle, but this is so good now, I don’t know if I will.

Opened one of my two bottles in afternoon and double decanted before dinner. First taste on sitting down was delicious and wine in the glass was voluptuous, perfectly balanced. Definitely in its zone. A unique, hard to describe Bordeaux taste but can’t say I’ve ever had a better dinner wine. Wine sieve for the sediment.
Addendum: 2nd bottle 5-21-22, ditto the above.

With my impaired taste, I can't reliably rate this wine, but the group of 10's consensus was that it was the WOTN out of 6 very nice cabs. It scored at least one 96. Decanted and aired 4 hours before tasted.

Deep ruby, youthful color; aromatic, blackcurrant, bell pepper/capsicum, forest floor, slight graphite; palate is medium-full bodied, excellent mouthfeel, tannins fully integrated but still present for structure, smooth, excellent combination of primary black fruits with some tertiary complexity, forest floor, slight cedar, impeccably balanced alcohol (13%); finish is medium-long. Honestly, everything I would look for in a bordeaux in transition between primary fruit and tertiary maturity. So much to love with excellent balance, freshness, fruit, complexity, and classicism. 94, with probably a decade to go as it doesn't seem to have evolved much in the past 5 yeasrs, but no harm in drinking them all now...

Decanted briefly for sediment, of which there was plenty. Definitely 'in the zone', like a lot of the not-completely-grand 2000s seem to be at the moment. Some savour and lead pencil on the nose, still quite a bit of cassis fruit, excellent balance of acidity and a silkyness to the tannins. Seductive on the finish and a pleasure to drink even without food (but we did have the Olympics on the TV!).

Not quite as stellar as the last bottle, but still very impressive. Full of youthful zest still, bursting with jammy fruit, though more red than black this time. Very moreish, very juicy, but with enough dusty class on the finish to avoid turning syrupy. Tasting it with the 2001 was like comparing a black and white photo to a colour one.

From 750ml. 2000 Chateau Giscour. Medium garnet colour. Pronounced nose of cassis, bell pepper and tobacco. Well integrated oak. Medium acidity and medium body. Fine resolved tannins. Good length on the finish. To my palate this is drinking beautifully now and near/at its peak. Went well with 80 day dry aged striploin. Drink them up!

Nov 2021: Decanted for 2 hours. Drank with coq au vin and homemade conrbread with jalapenos. The aroma was more complex than the flavor, a mature Bordeaux with a perfume of mineral, gravel, flowers, and leather. Medium body. The tannins had resolved, and the finish lasted about 15 seconds. Not a big, heavy experience. Rather more austere, with lots of tobacco, leather, mineral flavors. The fruit was muted, though still some berry flavors well underneath. Next time I open one of these, I will not decant as long and see how that tastes.
Dec 2021: Decanted 30 minutes before supper. That was the perfect amount of time. Drank with corned beef stew. The body and the cassis fruit were more apparent. The leather and mineral on the bouquet were phenomenal.

(8/28/21) This bottle was decanted to remove the sediment and then decanted for an hour and then double decanted.
The wine showed undergrowth, leather, green tobacco leaf, and black and red fruits on the nose. The concentrated palate showed mostly the same, but for me, the sour green tobacco notes were overwhelming, hiding the red and black fruits that my bottle mate tasted in force. (She didn’t taste the tobacco or sourness at all.) Despite this, the wine showed good acidity and very fine tannins, all in excellent balance. No score for day one because this was an unenjoyable, sour mess for me.
I guess this bottle needed several hours of decanting on day one because on day two it was transformed (or my palate was) after spending the night in the fridge under vacuum seal. It had clearly lost something on the nose, but what the nose lost the palate gained. There were now aging black and red fruits and tertiary notes on the palate. Very elegant and refined. 13% abv. (***+/16.5/93)

Bordeaux 2000 - 20 Years On - 48 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) It´s a good vintage but not on par with more recent great vintages like 09/10/15/16. Why? A smaller group of top wines reaching lower highs and in general a tad less depth, purity and finesse. 2) Right bank is ready, the left bank still needs time to integrate and open up. 3) Not much tertiary aromas yet - peak drinking window at least 10 years away for most wines. 4) 2000 is a bit a cooler vintage which is great for the right bank (not too much ripeness). 5) Winners? Pomerol with the highest ratings. Le Pin (97+ pts) leading the pack for me (narrowly beating the consensus winner Pavie (97 pts).
More information, top and worst 10 lists, appellation rankings, out- and underperformer from five participants in the story link. As always, in such tastings (lots of wines, not a lot of time per wine, not decanted) the ranking of wines/appellations might be more informative than the scores.
TN: While the Margaux and Palmer would have needed more air and a few more years in the cellar, this Giscours was open and singing. A medium- intense nose with dark fruits, tobacco and truffles. Ok but nothing too exciting. But on the palate the wine explodes with dark fruits, herbs, tobacco, coffee and burnt sugar notes. Good concentration and good structural frame, even though it doesn’t have the elegance of the best Margauxs. The other Margaux will surpass this Giscours but today this was on a 95 points level. But as you can see below, I liked it clearly better than the rest of the group.
Decanting: Didn’t need much air, good from the go.
Group average: 92.25 pts Group rank: Shared 29th out of 48

Having a group of wine friends over for my birthday to blind taste a few Bordeaux 2000 while BBQ'ing. Nose of brett and farmyard that dissipated with some air giving way to a classic farmyard/forest floor nose with dark fruit and some Margaux spices in the background. Most guessed Pauillac here as well. Very confident wine. Peak, drink up over the next few years.

Grand Bordeaux 2000 horizontal tasting; 6/20/2021-6/21/2021: Grand Bordeaux 2000 tasting with ~60 wines from the vintage hosted by a private collector. All wines were poured directly from the bottle with no decant and served in flights of 4. As general observations I would highlight: 1/ Today the 2000 is, without a doubt, a right bank vintage with Pomerol the star, 2/ the vast majority of wines are still going strong with hardly any past their peak 3/ On the left bank, St Estèphe was most ready to drink with a lot of wines in a closed stage right now, 4/ On the left bank, 2nd to 4th growths were generally more open for business than the 1st growths which almost all closed, only hinting at their full potential. 5/ If you must open a left bank bottle, Margaux is the safest place to look. Complete scoring overview and additional commentary included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: Pretty ripe red berry fruit with layers of smoke, espresso, a bit of medicinal notes or menthol. Appealing, well balanced and fresh nose, drinks reasonably now but rather simple.

N: Concentrated mixture of dark fruit and red fruit. Layers of cedar, spice, fig, and later cocoa. Definite savory, umami notes, similar to soy sauce.
P: Layered red and dark fruit integrated w/ strong acidity. Tannin still present but in the background. Fruit is elegant and playful
Overall very nice, an elegant expression of aged Bordeaux. Not an expert by any means but could probably last a few more years, though wouldn’t expect it to develop much more.

This consistently delicious wine remains a dark crimson colour with minimal edge attenuation. It shows a delicious nose of black fruits, cedar, dark chocolate and violets with touches of loamy earth. The palate is medium weight with deep rich blackcurrant and garnet plum fruits, violet chocolate and earthy/truffle touches. It remains beautifully balanced with great length and poise. This wine is classically Giscours in the best possible way.

Seventh bottle from a full case purchased at auction in 2008. Pristine conditions, perfect level and cork. Not decanted, opened several hours in advance. Almost three years since my previous note and it seems that this has now reached full maturity. The nose is very typical for a completely developed Giscours, but the palate is relatively slender and gravelly, with less authority and power than previously noted; the finish displays dried fruit and has good length. Drink soon.

After an hour in the decanter this was perfect to accompany Beef Bourgogne, but the best was yet to come. By hour three the wine had softened with earth, cherry, dark berries, chocolate and floral scents. Wow, what a beautiful wine. This is why we cellar wine for 20 years. This should hold for at least 5 more years.

45 minute decant, very little sentiment, easy cork extraction dark crimson, ever so slight bricking. Mid palate weight with cherry and currant cabernet fruit and cigar box nose.. tannins still there but restrained. medium spicy anise finish. I'd say this wine is now in a slow decline, (but in a good place) as the fruit is slightly fading. not a superstar, but a really good aged Margaux. 91-93

I return to this 2 years and 2 weeks on from my last contribution. Definitely gone up a point. A betting man would give it a fighting chance to get to 94 in 2023.
Frankly, great clobber. Tannins 95% resolved but happily a faint whiff, gentlest hint of crunch that I personally love.
Would love to know list price EP. Still think great value DP today. Safe safe perfectly performing claret. Only gave it 45 mins. Didn’t need / improve after. Lovely .

From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared under ideal conditions, this deep red/garnet wine is in a glorious spot. Decanted off of its sediment and allowed four hours in decanter prior to serial tasting, this is claret that delivers a hedonistic experience in every sense of the term. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, it flaunts a soft-textured array of red currants, dark plums, baking spices, truffles, bittersweet chocolate, lavender and cigar tobacco. Medium-bodied and with good lift, its residual tannins are silky, its oak fully integrated and its alcohol (13%) unnoticeable. Dense on the middle palate and finishing long, this is a sexy, feminine Giscours that is reminiscent of the '70 when it was in its prime. Those holding comparably cellared bottles will be very pleased. Drink now-2025.
Just like my last tasting note a year ago- no change. Wonderful wine, blends layers of richness with classic Bordeaux mature notes so well. One of the most consistently good 2000’s I’ve had.

Bouquet of rum, raisins, Christmas cake, some mint and vanilla in the background. Palate is medium-bodied, sweet, relatively silky, with some freshness, and a long finish with spicy, sweet elements. First night went through an awkward stage of almost feeling oxidized, but came together after a while, second night more balanced. Not straightforward but still with a lot of Bordeaux class.

The nose was full of very deep, profound sensations: blackberry, more like blackberry liqueur perhaps, black cherry, violet, a little plum and a touch of menthol on the finish. Quite rich at first, very pure fruit, but powerful and muscular, the blackcurrant and blackberry slightly yeasty as a result. The power didn't taste forced in any way, but it was a bit distracting. It took a couple of hours to simmer down, then the typical Giscours elegance and finesse shone through, with tastes of red fruits coming mid-palate and some freshness on the finish. By the second evening it had improved further and confirmed the impression I had had two years previously - that this is the best Giscours I've had.

A bit disappointing given the vintage and producer, but still showing the basic qualities of a classic claret. Lacks the secondary/tertiary hallmark tobacco/coffee/black olives notes that one would expect from a twenty year old Bx. Will keep my remaining bottles for 5+ years and hope for the best...

I am too noob to rate wines. This wine was really enjoyable. Started off a bit plasticy smelling on the nose but after an hour or so in a decanter opened up and you got great whiffs of earth. Really enjoyable to drink. We had it side by side next to a 2005 mortet cinq terroirs and another quilceda creek cab. It was an amazing evening where the mortet and the giscours really shined through.

Let it breathe in the bottle for 1 hr, then decanted for 4.5 more hours; total of 5.5 hours to fully open. Bouquet leaned more toward leather and damp earth, with enough fruit to make it interesting. Solid structure, but only mildly complex. Well balanced, though slightly below normal acidity. The tannins were mostly smooth, but there was still an edge, suggesting more age possible if cellared carefully - the fruit seemed like it was at peak now, but could last longer. Interesting path of flavors, beginning with stone and cherry, then a touch of plum, graphite, & spice peeking in, and onto the raspberry, mint, & vanilla finish. Medium body building to an enjoyable, medium-long finish. A great representation of Margaux terroir for a fair value.

Medium red color, brick rim, very clear. More youthful looking than one would expect. Nose is mature Bordeaux, with spice and earth, some stewed notes, mineral, wet leather, and some sense of heat. Fruit notes, bottle age, licorice. On the palate, fruit notes to begin, lead pencil, stewed notes again, and more heat. There is a tough edge to this bottle that overshadows the complexity the wine has developed. Not over the hill from a fruit perspective, but needing a more generous feel.

At Urbane Restaurant, Brisbane. A consistently delicious wine that shows the magic of the commune, the 2000 Giscours remains a deep crimson colour with a lovely nose of blackcurrant, dark plums, violet and dark chocolate with touches of cedar and earth. The palate is medium weight with lovely intensity and purity and a finish of fine tannins that lingers beautifully. Always a go-to example of the commune.

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ BV): Beautiful and mature bouquet with oak, red and dark berries and sweet spices. On the palate good acidity, red and dark berries, some autumn impressions, beautiful oak and cedar. Overall a beautiful and mature wine. No real hurry, but the wine will not improve anymore. Drink within the next two years or so.
Fully mature, really in it’s sweet spot now. Beautiful ruby red colored with no signs of aging. Generous nose of violets, red, blue and black fruit. Tastes of cassis, cherries, graphite, and a little vanilla. Finish is lengthy with smooth tannins. Full bodied and delicious. I’m buying more
Have had this a few times years ago but this was the first bottle out of a new case. Lovely wine, rich, juicy black fruit, tobacco, with some classic mature Bordeaux earthy layers, minerality, and long finish. Entering a beautiful drinking window, and as good as this is now, there is no rush to drink these (though will be hard to keep my hands off).
Rich sweet Tobacco, leather, dark berries and chocolate on the nose. On the palate sweet dark and red fruits, leather and leadpencil. Classic in a rich way.

Two bottles decanted together - otherwise identical to my October note which I quote verbatim: "The fruit has taken on a markedly rich damson and wild hedge fruit character surrounded by grainy integrated tannins, earth, liquorice and spice. Mellow, warm and inviting overall feel - not typically Margaux? Has hit its peak but no rush, say up to 25yrs from vintage" A third bottle was decanted separately and stoppered immediately as a back-up. In the end we drunk it with our Boxing Day (26th Dec) dinner 24+hrs later. It had held up well, perhaps just loosing a little bit of grip but still rating 91pts.

In the glass this has good color with very light bricking. Minimal breathing time, which did not impact enjoyment. Aromatically presents creme de cassis, sous bois, mint, and black currant. On the palate this starts with an energetic lift of acidity, flipping quickly into dry tannin, and finishes with a blackberry, iron, and herb finish that has great persistence. Very long finish with nice polish. Mature, but this bottle had plenty of vigor. Happy to enjoy, but sorry it’s my last bottle as this should continue to drink well.

Approaching end of drinking plateau. Double decanted and left open for 2 hours before serving. Drinking very well now and paired beautifully with Paté de Champagne. This 2000 did not have the earthy, rawness of many other Chateau from the vintage. Drink up soon.

Opened for a family dinner. A delicious wine with lovely Margaux character the 2000 Giscours pours with a rich crimson red colour with some edge bricking. The nose is rich with blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry leaf, violet, cedar and a touch of earth. It shows a medium weight palate with nice complexity and density providing drive through to an earthy finish backed by some persistent fine grain tannins. Lovely drinking with a meal.

Another satisfying bottle of this wine which was in perfect condition after double decanting to take out to dinner. The colour is deep crimson with some minimal edge reddening and a nose of blackcurrant, damson plum, violet, cedar and damp loam. The palate is rich with both floral and earthy edges to the round fruit characters. The length is very good and the overall effect is of a lovely Margaux on its plateau of maturity where it has sat for some years now. Interestingly about 200mls was left under Vacuvin at 4C for 3 weeks and was in very good form on return from overseas suggesting plenty of life ahead where the cellar and the cork are of good quality !

A very serious wine meant for drinking in an oak paneled room and contemplating the world. (Don't get me wrong, we drank it on the couch, watching TV.) A fascinating nose just after decant eventually subsided, so personally I would prefer to drink soon after pouring. Complex and deep, with a strong earthy-olive finish.

The wine has a slight hint of brick- still appears rather youthful. Nose full of mushroom, cassis, leather, and licorice. After two hours of breathing, wine very open and tannins fine. Medium weight. Old world balance of fruit and terroir elements. Long finish. Beautiful. Drinking well, but should last.

Cassis, tobacco, forest floor, dark cherry. Medium-plus body. Medium acidity. Medium-light tannins. Medium-long finish. Might not be at peak but no need to wait either - depends on how much fruit you prefer.

Has evolved appropriately since my last bottle three years ago, and it continues to soften up and gain tertiary complextiy. Improved significantly with a two hour aeration. The nose shows nice complexity, with lots of red and dark fruits, violets, sous bois, cigar box, anise, and dark chocolate. Also had notable spiciness on the palate. A smooth mouthfeel and soft tannins. Showed some mineral notes on the finish. This is still on its way up, but I expect it to peak within five years. If you open this now, I recommend at least two hours of aeration after decanting. I'm finding that many of the 2000 wines from Margaux are very accessible right now, notably this, Malescot, du Tertre, Dauzac, and Brane-Cantenac. Even Palmer is starting to come around.

So there we were at a Binnys Friday night wine tasting devoted to France, with the predictable collection of lower-end Burgundies, Bordeaux, assorted Rhones etc. and there hiding on one table is a bottle of Giscours from the 2000 vintage. Naturally, I tentatively offer my glass for a taste (thinking this might be a tease).
Quickly you know the difference between wine and good wine (or perhaps between good and great). First off, the aroma is arresting and enveloping - cigar box, cedar wood, old libraries and so on. And then you get to the palate... I can see why it has a $125 tag and that might be seen as a bargain in the whole scheme of things - at least for those without the need to track cash flow.

After the 1975, a second bottle of Giscours to commemorate Eric Albada Jelgersma, who passed away the day before yesterday. The 2000 is the first really outstanding Giscours after he took over in 1995 - after years of neglect by the previous owners, it took a while (and a lot of money) to get things right again. This bottle is firing on all cylinders. Youthful appearance with little or no browning at the edges; open and impressive nose, with freshness and leafy blackcurrant fruit from the 55% Cabernet-Sauvignon, and black cherries, red meat, truffle and black olive aromas from the 45% Merlot in the blend; slender rather than hugely concentrated palate (the yield was 55 hl/ha), but this suits the wine well as it delivers Giscours’ typical brand of masculine Margaux elegance, medium weight (13% ABV), ripe but fresh acidity, finely grained tannins, well balanced and elegant; the finish is on the light side, with dried fruits and a hint of tea suggesting full maturity, length is good. Drink now - 2025.

Lovely wine - very deep and vibrant, with mostly blackcurrant flavours, but not quite ready yet. Certainly very enjoyable now, but the tannins are still there and this will be even better in another five years.

Popped cork one hour before, full bodied up front, missing something mid way through and finish is average at best, balance is average at best. Still pleasant and in prime, will hold for at least a decade.

Deep red, with minimal lightening at the rim. I’d doesn’t take much coaxing to get aromas of leather, pipe tobacco, black cherries and herbs. The wine is medium-bodied in the mouth, with black currants, plums and minerals. There is still a bit of tannin that pokes out in the finish, but at this point it is not at all obtrusive. I would enjoy this wonderful, old-school Margaux over the next 10-12 years. 92.

Pizza Night with Aged Classic Reds Ten Plus Years Old (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)): Very dark red/purple color. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Regardless, it was drinking remarkable well. This had been opened early in the day and then recorked, so it really didn't see much air in my mind. This is a great Giscours in my opinion, and in a vintage like '00 one would fully expect a top notch example. While youthful, there is an approachability that is clear. The nose offers a lot of umami up front, followed by Margaux violets, dark berries, pipe tobacco, graphite and mushroom. The palate is dense and concentrated, full bodied with dark fruits, graphite, gravel, and grainy tannins 93pts with a couple points of upside. This has got a lot of year ahead of it.

Pizza night at R&Rlers / Kevin's. Not sure how much air this got but I expect it was likely double decanted before arrival. A dark ruby color. Lovely nose of cigar ash, coffee, smoke, chocalate and berry aromas. The palate showed great depth and echoed the aromas along with, dark cherry, cigar box, cedar, and mineral. Silky Margaux elegance and class. Happy to own 4 these myself. Ill (attempt) to leave mine alone until thier 20th Bday in 2020/21. Deliciously placid, elegant and complex already. So fine to drink now or, hold in confidence for even more layers past 2020. My guess is these will full on rock from 2020+. An outstanding represeantive of Margaux and the utlra blanaced 2000 vintage. Only overshadowed by the 2000 Lewoville Barton for BDX tonight, IMO. Terrific value here.

Nicoletta's 40th Birthday weekend!; 1/18/2018-1/21/2018 (Megeve, France): Opened and served. On the classic side as expected ( very similar experience to 2 years ago Papies 92) . Maybe better that we didn't long decant this. Shows quite a bit of a secondary side, with cedar, leather and tobacco notes, light fruit and a relatively soft wine , medium intensity. Not as much longevity promise as when we had it 2 years ago but still a very solid wine. 91-92

Dark. Blackberry, cigar box, dark fruit. We’ll resolved tannins, velvety. All the elements are there and working well together to form a refined wine. Not outstanding or remarkable, rather enjoyable and respectable.

disappointing. either dried out already or not ready for years yet ! fruit ist almost unpresent at the moment, but tannins show rather aggressive. as other 2000ers show the same phenomen, I guess, they're still too young to enjoy . . . . . maybe in 2025, you could experience a relevation ?

(Magnum) Dark ruby with a faded rim. Classic nose with beautiful cassis, tobacco and cedar notes. Tannins are fully ripe, firm and simultaneously velvety. Bright, juicy blackberry and cassis mingle with cigar box on the medium long finish. A truly classic left bank Bordeaux that presently offers plenty of drinking pleasure, but should still keep well until at least 2025.

Certainly one of the most enjoyable Bordeaux's that I have had. Drinking beautifully after a couple hours of decanting. This is what a Bordeaux should taste like - nicely integrated tannins and acidity. Paired great with lamb.

Elegant, refined, medium bodied and silky, with a nose of flowers, cherries, truffle and leaf. This is a very pretty wine, that is just about fully developed. The wine should remain at this level for at least 15 years, or even longer.

Decanted two bottles at 1862 for an hour. Separate decanters, so I could try the consistency (fun). Classic Bdx. The noses of both are expressive, but different- leather and cigarbox with one, the other is mustier and earthier with cedar. The former has much greater intensity of red fruit, the latter is softer with more black pepper. Interesting variation within one point of each other, maybe 93 and 92. The official score represents my favorite of the two bottles!

Probably one of the best Giscours I have had. Crimson color, decanted and drank over an hour. Nose of cassis, flowers, and dark red berries. Noteworthy precision of fruit on the palate with good energy, vivacity and balance and a satisfying finish with tannins very velvety. Much softer and a lot of finesse for a Giscours. Very nice indeed.

Back into the btl about 3-1/2 hours after the initial decant. Removed cork upon arrival at our friend's place. At least 5 hours all together by the time we started drinking it. Lovely nose of cigar, coffee, chocalate and berry aromas. The palate showed great depth and echoed the aromas along with some cedar, cherry and minerality. Still youthfully dark color, even at age 16+. Throwing some sediment, do decant. Happy to own 4 more. Ill attempt to leave these alone until closer to its 20th Bday in 2020/21. Placid, elegant and complex now but no rush. Drink or hold in confidence. My guess is these really rock from 2020+. 93pts+

Did I like it? Yes - but I didn't think it was anywhere near ready to drink! I do think it has absolute potential to get up a few notches over time (like to a 93) given the depth and structure of the wine. Closed nose initially but it started breaking open after a couple of hours with some ripe fruit and mineral spice. I found it still very tight and am thinking a day of air might have have made it something quite different. There is plenty of dark fruit, espresso as well as spice, cocoa and some herb coming through. I think this is really quite a complex wine but it is still just a baby...

A less exciting bottle of this generally terrific wine. The colour was just a little more brown at the edge and while the nose still had that lovely cassis, violet, dark chocolate and wet earth character that is so distinctive it was all a bit smudged and imprecise. The palate was similar and while the length was excellent with some fine tannin it just was all a little rustic. Enjoyable but this bottle was a little below the line probably reflecting the variation that even the best cork imposes on us !

Sixteen years old now and almost in full bloom. Excellent nose, mature but lively, completely classical, very typical for Giscours and for Margaux, fragrant but deep, pure and cool; the palate is on the slender side (it has lost weight in the last four years), but fresh, elegant and perfectly balanced, with layered flavours and just the right amount of grip; hint of eucalyptus on the fragrant finish, very good length. A wine of style and some substance - I expect it to reach its peak in full maturity in 2-4 years and it should last for a decade after that. Six bottles left to follow its further development.
Really drinking well right now (not something I say about many B2K). Popped and decanted for sediment and served. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is gorgeous (better than the palate). Perfumed with cigar and cassis and cherries. Some dried fruit and leather. On the palate, while very good, not quite as complex as the nose. Nice cherries, and cassis with slightly drying tobacco notes. Some depth. Nice balance. Food helps it. Lovely wine at this point. I have one other bottle and hopefully, will drink it over the next few years.

Three hour decant. No sign of age in the color. Light sediment. Not as much perfume as I would have expected. This came across more like a Paulliac than a Margaux. This was stuffed though with blackberries and moist pipe tobacco. Full, long and pure. This is just a a beautiful wine. This is in a great place. It was sublime with grilled filet mignon and was a savor after dinner on it's own. Margaux rocked in 2000 and this is up there with d'Issan and still just a click below Ferriere. 93

Opened to breathe (slow-ox) and sampled over a 4h period. It was fun watching the evolution which was mostly in the nose and took almost the entire 3-4h to shift from closed, to a sophisticated leathery sandalwood. Really singing now. The palate was consistently a satin, medium bodied, red fruit dominated, well balanced Bdx with oak, spices, leather, and a faint acid finish. Excellent, but it really needs the time to open. Next time I will decant. Plenty of life left, should be at peak for at least 3-5 more years.

Like I said in 2012 with my first btl of this, the more 2000 BDXs I drink, the more impressed I am with the vintage! The stuff in the btl is living up to the massive hype surrounding it's release. I wish, I had bought some / any on release! I was a CA Cab guy back then. All my 2000s are backfills and, there is still decent value out there in this vintage. Decanted a solid 4 hours ahead of drinking this and back into the btl about 3 hours after the initial decant. Removed cork upon arrival at restaurant. So a good 5 hours all together by the time we started drinking it at Capital Grille. A huge intoxicating nose of tobacco, coffee, chocalate and berry aromas. My daughter & son in law even took note, which, they rarely do. The palate showed great depth and echoed the aromas along with some cedar, cherry and minerality. This is a complete success and joy to drink. Ethereal, elegance and class all apply here. Nice long finish. Up there with one of my best BDX experiences ever. Even at age 15+, hardly any sediment. Drinking very very well right now but no signs of decline and perhaps still some upside? I have a couple more but need to track down a few more of these. I think my double decant really opened this baby up. Classy Margaux! 96+

Cellared since release. Perfect fill and cork. Dark red, minimal lightening at rim. Classic nose of ripe cassis, Margaux-berries, some earthy complexity. Medium-full body, ripe cassis fruit and earthy notes follow the nose, some nice aged complexity, well balanced, medium-long finish. Keeps me coming back for another glass. Should continue to drink well for many years. Excellent.

This was a really pleasant surprise. Really nice nose of violets, red raspberry, and some oak. Definitely came off like a baby Ch Margaux in nose and flavor profile. More red fruit on the palate. Drinking really nicely now. 92/93. Seeing this wine selling for $67 retail (WineSearcher), that's a steal. Note: had at a restaurant; first bottle was raisiny, perhaps poorly stored. But bottle variation tonight.

On the nose, the floral, tobacco, blackberry, cedar and cherry aromatics are in full force. The texture is soft and polished with a blast of freshness and sweet fruits in the finish. You can drink this now, or age it for more secondary development. But I really like how it is showing today. The wine was made using a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

I think this wine is going to be great, but it isn't quite there yet. Very dense ruby color. Somewhat plummy nose- not very Margaux- developing some wet stone, spice and slight band aid characteristics. Still a little muted; perhaps going through an awkward adolescent phase.
Excellent concentration and length. At the moment it lacks the silkiness and balance of a really top-class Margaux, but I think that will come in time. Try again in 5 years.

Another delicious 2000 Margaux that's showing youthful beauty. Dark ruby and starting to show some bricking in it's appearance, aromatic almost floral. On the palete I found medium-bodied red fruit that smoothly transitions to a nice finish. I would say I would prefer the Brane-Cantenac by a hair, but this is on the more classic style and less brawny if that's the style you're after.

Coravin 12/16/15: Medium-deep ruby with minimal bricking, youthful appearing; nose is moderately aromatic, blackberry, mint, forest floor, raspberry, almost slight graphite; palate is full bodied, medium tannins that are approachable and soft now, medium-plus acid, alcohol is quite low and well balanced at 13%, but there is still well-ripened fruit that persists through the midpalate; medium length finish. This is very good quality bordeaux that straddles the classic balanced, food friendly, low alcohol, traditional bordeaux style with well-ripened fruit, good density, and easy drinkability of a more modern-styled wine. This is at the early part of it's drinkability window but has a long life ahead, though I don't know if it will evolve to develop more complexity and it is a lot of fun to drink now. A screaming value at its $26 release price, and even worth it's going rate at ~$60. 91+ 12/27: Similar to when first tasted with the coravin. Moderately aromatic nose, blackberry, mint, thyme; palate is full bodied, elegant but present tannins, good blackberry fruit, balanced alcohol; medium-plus finish. Overall shows great balance and depth, good complexity. Actually, I think this will continue to improve for a decade. 92+

Decanted for two hours and worth it wafting cassis and cherry aromas, this black and blueberry jam blended beauty with spice and smoky forest presented itself as another paragon of the best vintage of multi generations, the 2000. As good a Giscours as one can find, and because of it's cost of $26.00, a wow wine. Rich and regal, silky and smooth, this gives credibility to an overlooked third growth and clamors for drinking any 2000 Margaux.

This is a wine that needs some time to unwind for a couple of hours. This has aromas of Creme de cassis, violets, and black cherry. On the palate this has pronounced cedar, tobacco, creme de cassis, chocolate and a hint of smoke. Good acidity on the palate with well integrated tannins.
This bears some similarity to other 2000 Bordeaux recently consumed such as Haut Bages Liberal, and Chateau La Tourette.
A solid wine that was better on the second night. 90-91

plénitude, densité,pureté avec signe léger d'évolution (tendance cola..) Classique Bordeaux an nez, sous-bois, champignon, beurre sale, café. Le nez reste léger, et laisse apparaître les minéralités du verre.. Les tanins sont un peu moins vifs . On sent l'apogée proche. De la matière , de la longueur.

This was good but I have to say it was not really up to my expectations for the 2000 vintage. Some say it needs more time. Some say no. It will definitely last awhile so I'd say give it a few more years although it may not matter. It tasted and smelled like a good Barolo as strange as that sounds. I let two friends taste it blind and they both called "Italian".

Second Sunday Group: Margaux (M's): Aromas of currants and black fruit, but quite reticent overall. Extremely stubborn, this really didn't show much more until it had been in the glass for an hour, but once it did, whoa. Aromas of tar, black currants and herbs. Wonderful dark fruit on the palate, with terrific balance and length on the finish. Florals, plum and subtle earth tones add complexity. Excellent, but I had already turned in my rankings at this point and was waiting for the votes to be tallied. 92-93 pts.

This has come back to, in many ways, what it was like around 2005-07. Floral, aramatically soft and elegant...distinctively from Margaux. The bottle or two back then were a glimpse of this. Then the bottles consumed a few years ago were pretty big and tannic in comparison with the CabSauv sticking out compared to the rest of the blend. Served with prime rib on Christmas this was elegant, earthy, had floral, dark red fruit, spices. Lovely wine. Save the last two until 2018 or so.

An amazing bottle and proof, why bordeaux used to be one of the great places to buy at good QPR. I paid 26€ during subscription back then, those days are gone... A delicate nose of black cherries, blueberries, cedar and some coffee dust. The wine is medium bodied, with nice acidity and fine tannins slowly melting away. I think this drinks very well right now and shows no signs of drying out and has plenty of extract left, so I guess it can be enjoyed at this level for another 5-10 years.

Deep garnet color, likely would have benefited from decanting as it was somewhat closed after sitting in an open bottle for an hour. Plenty of dark fruit and bramble in the nose. Plum, dark cherry, a little cedar on the palate, tannins very muted - drinking very well right now.

This was a fantastic bottle of wine. I decanted this for about two hours, and it opened up wonderfully. Great fruit on this even after 14 years. Amazing elegance and smooth finish, typical of a Margaux. Would definitely seek out again.

this is a good time to drink this : the fruit is still fresh, 2 hours caraf was enough, I don't think that this will be a wine that supports long cellaring, but there's no hurry to drink this

Ruby red color with an aromatic nose of earth, tobacco and black fruits. On the palate this wine is deliciously smooth and well balanced. The tannins are soft and the finish is lingering. Extremely enjoyable wine.

Bottle Purchased En Primeur on Release and stored in a Euro Cave untouched till now.
Cork was in perfect condition when opened. Fabulous condition!
The wine appeared young with a deep garnet colour. On the nose we enjoyed an intense bouquet of cassis fruit, cedar, plums, and tobacco. A very enjoyable aromatic wine that is classic Margaux. In the mouth the wine is smooth and extremely well balanced and a lovely fruit character on the finish. The wine is tasting wonderfully now for those that enjoy a more youthful style of wine but for those that enjoy a more aged profile another 10 years of patience is suggested.
I loved it!

Medium garnet. Expressive nose of tobacco, cedar wood, red fruit and sweet spices, classic, mature Medoc. On the palate excellent sweetness of fruit with Bordeaux style freshness and tannins buffering it. Medium bodied, never heavy, soft and succulent due to the ripeness of the tannins. This is a really great Bordeaux. I remember the release price of ca. 45$...

Old World Blind Tasting >$40 (Bin 75): Very dark core with bricking, aged, sediment; cowpie, funk, very noble, green pepper, rotting, char, red currant, incredible nose; palate not as great as nose, softer, lead pencil, fatter, still good structure, cigar; nose said Pauillac to me but the way the palate fell short should have told me Margaux.

Purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this wine was double-decanted prior to serving at a walk-around Memorial weekend party. It was allowed approximately five hours in decanter prior to funneling back into the cleaned bottle. Deep garnet at this point, it offers an intense, gorgeous bouquet of red currants, plums, truffles, lavender and pipe tobacco. Medium-bodied, round and with soft tannins, it delivers flavors which mirror the nose. The mouth texture is silky and the alcohol (listed as 13%) is seamless. Long and velvety on the finish, this is a wine that is hard to resist. A sexy, feminine version of Margaux, this bottling rivals its '70 brethren (when the latter was in its prime). Although it may hold up longer, it is drinking so beautifully now that it would best be consumed over the next 6-8 years. Drink now-2022.

Another delicious bottle of 2000 from Margaux. Still very dark crimson. Nose classic blackcurrants, violets and cedar with chocolate and " Giscour earth ". Palate still very structured with that earthy touch and mouth filling fruit. Classic !

Dark color with some bricking on the edge. Bouquet of dark fruit, pencil shavings, red currants, sweet spices and a nice Merlot perfume to it. Entry has nice acidity and fully integrated velvety tannins. Medium finish exuding Margaux-like elegance. Excellent, mature but no need to rush yet.

Simply in a great place right now. Layers of luscious red fruit accented by all of the classic Bordeaux notes. Had it next to an 88 Ch Margaux and it won in a blind taste. Take that 1st growth...I have another bottle and will keep it to put up against another 1st. Oh, and we were fortunate enough to buy it at the estate in Bordeaux back in 2004. Would like to try and find some more, but the tariff is likely much higher than the $30 we paid back then.

Progressing as expected in Dec '12 note. Has hit plateau and should drink well over next decade - proving solid rather than spectacular so no gain in initial rating, but always a pleasure.

This is a complex, earthy wine with black jammy fruit that you can chew. The mouthfeel is wonderful and intense. In my opinion this wine will continue to improve over the next three years at least.

Big Bordeaux Event VI (Kevin's House (Minneapolis)): Not a big Giscours fan but this was drinking well. Funk, spices, a little heat and floral notes. Medium finish and needs some more time in the cellar. Could improve over time.

Big Bordeaux VI: Margaux; 11/2/2013-11/3/2013 (Kevin's house): A 4 hour decant. Meaty and in-your-face nose. The palate is lively. Rounc and rich, nice fruit, some black licorice (once someone else brought it to my attention). A bit austere, still enjoyable. In fact, I like this a lot at this price.

Brought from the cellar and served to guests without decanting. I was worried about it being closed up, but at age 13 it was drinking great right from the bottle. After an hour in the glass it was even better, but I can't tell you if it would continue to improve because, alas, it was gone. Back to the cellar for something else...

Monopole: More oak than the 2000 Lagrange, and a bit more fruit driven with ripe red cherry, cassis; spice box, floral with a touch of pine sap; mouth shows a youthful wine with red fruits, medium grip, good acidity. Almost half Merlot, and it shows. Solid, balanced, check back in 4-5 years.

First bottle from a case. Looks very youthful... dark red with very little bricking at rim but was nice and open after a 2 hour decant. Great nose, typical Bordeaux, then nice mix of fruit (cherries) and earthiness on the palette. Better than the '00 Malescot IMHO

Drinking a great Margaux like this reminds me why Bordeaux will always be my favorite region. Dark and saturated with no bricking highly concentrated fruit with really nice tertiary flavors while exhibiting no heavy handed extraction, or oak. big and beautiful savory finish.

A really beautiful Margeaux with a lovely perfumed nose. Perfectly weighted wine with light woody, earthy and spicy notes complementing the fruit. Genuine class here, showing both the terroir and the vintage. I was determined to buy some until I saw the price, which seems to be 2x even the 2009 and 3x other recent vintages!

Very classic, medium + body, cigar tobacco, sous-bois, hint of cocoa and mushrooms and earth; tannins beginning to fade a bit, quite high acidity, suggestion of dried leaves, old leather. This is drinking really well now, and in fact seems to be aging a bit more than I would expect from a 2000. Seems to be hitting its stride now and for another 10 years, but not longer. Try more 2000's in the next 3-5 years.

Italy Tasting (pirate): Medium ruby color. Nice aromatics of black currant/cassis, some earth and graphite and a hint of smoke. Medium body with medium but silky tannin and medium-high acidity providing freshness. Pretty long. Classic, elegant Bordeaux with freshness and nice complexity. Would deserve a higher rating if there was some more density on the mid-palate. It's drinking beautifully now.

Clean, open pefumey/flowery Bordeaux nose, ripe but not hot and very enjoyable. Palate a letdown in comparison. There was no dustiness I find with some Bordeaux 2000s but it was a little hard and awkward, as if trying too hard with nothing in reserve.

Two bottles decanted into my magnum decanter 4 hours before consumption at friends New Years Eve dinner to accompany the cheese course (French style 3rd course). Little sign of age in the glass. Bramble fruit aromas with toast and wild herbs. Flavour smokey, cedary and well integrated tannins. The whole encased in an intense but racy sweet cassis envelope. Good length. Deliberately chose to drink this wine earlier than one might otherwise have done to allow its youthful relative robustness to balance the powerful flavours of the cheeses. 2 more years should see it plateau from where it should hold for a further 10 or so. Very good now, I would expect it to gain a mark or two as its complexity develops with time.

Outstanding wine....elegant, balanced, expressive, this one exceeds expectation. Still relatively unevolved and youthful with strong but polished dark fruits, and soft, silky tannin, this should continue to age beautifully, and I'd probably recommend holding another 8-10 years, though delightful now....

At the beginning of the drinking plateau. Dark, inky, medium tannins, amazing depth and character. Has the typical earthiness(a good aspect) of the 2000 vintage. Wine of the night. Try again in 4 or 5 years.

Cellared since release. Perfect fill and cork. Deep dark red core, minimal lightening at rim. Rich nose of ripe cassis, Margaux-berries, earthy funk and a hint of mocha/tar - this is developing nicely as the oak integrates and the Margaux-ness starts to come to the fore. Medium-full body, interesting mix of ripe cassis fruit and tarry/earthy notes on the palate follow the nose, too soon for any serious tertiary characteristics, nice balance, medium-long finish. Still on the upswing, this wine is in an interesting place showing some classic Margaux notes and some omdern richenss and power. I expect this will continue to improve over the next five years. Outstanding.

The more 2000 BDXs I drink, the more impressed I am with the vintage. The stuff in the btl is living up to the massive hype surrounding it's release. I wish I had bought some / any on release! I was a CA guy back then. All my 2000s are or will be backfills. I paid $70 for the Giscour and it drank like a $350+ Leoville Las Cases last night. Medium garnet color. I popped and poured a small pour at 3:30 and left the rest in the btl till consumed by 7:30. The nose was open and amazing from the get go. A little peppery at first but quickly evolved into bold; tobacco, coffee, chocalate and berry aromas. The palate showed great depth and echoed the aromas along with some cedar, cherry and minerality. This is a complete success and joy to drink. Ethereal, elegant, class all apply here. Nice long finish. One of the best btls I've had so far in 2012. Hardly any sediment. Drinking very very well now. Happy to have 3 more to enjoy. Wish I had paid the $30 future price someone mentioned on CT but no regrets on paying $70 for it. Its $90 on WS now and still a bargain.

Medium red. Nose of blackberries, soft pipe tobacco, steel, and a hint of smoke. Pure and balanced. What a bargain at $29 as a future 10+ years ago. Footnote: tasted the next day: nose more muted, but it has stood up well and really come together. Still great balance. Drink by itself or with food, a lovely maturing Bordeaux.

Complex nose, dark chocolate, coffee, plums and dark fruits, leather, earthy, fresh pleasant acidity. In the mouth dark chocolate, dark fruits, though a bit bitter but not tannic. Masculine wine, lacks fruit on the palate. Shut down. Needs probably more time. For now 88. After 24 hours cold decanting in the fridge the wine opened up and showed all the finesse one would expect. 92 points.

Still youthful but showing beautifully. Dark red-purple color. Classic, soaring Margaux bouquet that is refined and feminine, showing black currant, plum, flowers, graphite, and earth. In the mouth, the picture of concentration and elegance, with perfect balance. The fruit is beautiful and quite forward, backed up by impressive tobacco and earth notes, along with a hint of the floral and some earthy spice. Good acidity and a finish that is long and punctuated with fine tannins. Still could use some time to unwind, but every indication about the quality of the 2000 vintage is right here. A-/A

Opened and aired. First taste was a bit closed, but opened up between 1st and 2nd hour, then the nose slowly declined, though I would say the body and finish improved to the end of the bottle. Nose was not forthcoming, but had the expected dark fruit (cassis) with hints of smoke and wood. Fills the mouth with pleasant acidity backed by mature fruit and smooth, smooth tannins. Medium finish, with more elements of smoke, spice and cacao at the end. Overall, it is more than pleasant to drink, but lacks the extra layers of complexity to warrant a higher rating

Didn't show as well as the previous bottles, but improved over the night so maybe lots air is the key. Biggest complaint is a bell pepper note that I don't recall from the previous bottles. 2000 Margaux Tasting Dinner (5 wines) (New Buffalo, Michigan): 2nd time I have tried this 3rd growth wine. The last time was at the UGC tasting in 2003. Decanted for 2 hours. This wine does not seem to have progressed much in the last 7 years. It still has a way to go but it is a very nice wine to drink now for its youthful power and exuberance. Scents of rose petals and grahite. Firm but approachable tannins which did not hide the sweet berry fruit notes. On the finish, mint, licorice and charcoal appeared. 90 points.

I agree with previous notes in that it is a deep garnet color with very LONG legs on the glass. The nose was pungent with some floral , wood and barnyard notes. I think this wine still is very young. Although the wine was good, it was not a WOW wine, I think in 10 years it will be MUCH better. Has the genes to becomes something exceptional. But it is not that way today.

Served in double blind fashion to our tasting group. The wine was decanted and aerated for four hours prior to being funneled back into the bottle. Deep ruby/red robe with red rim. Clean, quite intense nose showing assorted black fruits, licorice and a hint of espresso. Medium-to-full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, ample sweet tannins and a silky mouth texture. The flavors mirror the nose, with an additional mineral element. The middle is luscious and full, leading to a long finish. This wine is very nice right now and has the structure to drink nicely for at least another decade. Drink now-12/20.

A rich and robust wine. More like a Pauillac than Margaux. A very fruity nose. A little strong of tannins upon pouring which soon gave way to a very complex and fulfilling taste. Well balanced with plenty of cherry, chocolate and berries. The finish was good and lasted for quite a while. I'll buy this wine again.

I've been consistently impressed with the 2000 Giscours. Double decanted two hours before dinner, this might have scored even higher but we drank it right after a 1985 Leoville Barton that showed very well. The Giscours still held its own and promises to be a great wine in 5-10 years. Lots of stuffing.

Dark fruit and minerals; notes of coffee. Creosote notes reminisicent of a St. Estephe; floral notes are evident with some coaxing, but the great Margaux perfume was obscured by the incredible concentration and structure. Pronounced acidity on the back end initially; eventually rounded out. This has a very promising future.

This note based on second day tasting. The color is deep purple-crimson. Nose of ripe cherry, blackberry and coffee. The palate is expansive without being heavy. There's a dominating element of roasted coffee beans but there's tons of ultra ripe fruit here with solid tannic structure. The overall impression though is quite feminine which is a tough balance to achieve for a wine with this much going on. The finish is long and fortells an exciting future.

This is impeccable wine, perfect balance of fruit, minerality/earth and tannin. No "fireworks" here, just incredibly drinkable, understated, elegant, very Margaux. Wish I had more than a mere 3-bottles left...A treat and a great QPR.

Decanted for two to three hours. Deep opaque purple color with a ruby rim. The nose took an hour or so to open up, but once it did there were black fruits--currants, blackberries and plum-- earthy minerals and tobacco. We began drinking after an hour and a half in the decanter, but around 2.5 hours it really came into its own. There was a continuation of the black fruits from the nose to the palate. Medium to full bodied. It was really big initially, with an incredibly long, menthol finish. As it settled in, it shortened but also softened, with the tannins smoothing out into a really nice but substantial, meaty finish.

With Deb, David and Lindsey at Rothmann's. Very open, smooth and giving. Cassis and black fruits on the palate, tannins lurking in the background of the smooth, forward fruit. There is some Pauillac-like graphite along with the Margaux floral aspect, and the wine is a good balance between young Cabernet assertiveness, tempered by a Margaux femininity. Very enjoyable. Drinking well today in a lush, primary way, and should develop secondary complexities with more age.

Bought EP, finally delivered, immediately cracked a bottle. Very good Margaux in early phase of (likely lengthy) drinking window. Lots of fruit, nicely balanced. Second half of bottle was even better today with nicely integrated tannins and young fruit. Excellent Bordeaux, fine value.

Good, not great Margaux. 91 points is probably generous for the wine. Lacked some dimension both on the nose and palate, but has a nice mouthfeel, sweet cassis fruit and smooth tannins that make it easy to drink for a young Bordeaux.

Really good, as always - I'm disappointed to have gone through all of my bottles of this so soon. Ripe, graphite and earth notes. Characteristic Margaux elegance. Well structured but in great balance for such a young wine.

Decanted about 2 hours. Dark opaque purple with garnet at the rim. Surprisingly vibrant nose with dark blackberry and currant fruit, some oaky cedar and dried flowers. Full bodied with up front sweetness. Nicely balanced with fine ripe tannins, finishes with black licorice. The tannins clip the finish a bit. We drank this with a standing rib roast and the tannic young bordeaux went very well with the meal. Should age well.

Post-Auction Offline (Toba Restaurant, Toronto, Canada): Dark ruby/black colour. Medicinal/menthol aromas along with blackcurrant, lead pencil/graphite, and vanilla. Medium-full bodied, with lots of blackcurrant, menthol, and black plums. Moderate finish, 35s, with black fruit. Yummy.

This one fooled me at first, I didn't think it had the depth to really improve with decanting. After about an hour in the decanter I was happily wrong. The aroma was pronounced from the beggining and it just got better - earthy, smoked meats, and dark fruit - it didn't indicate a graceful and delicate Margaux, and that proved to be true. A rich, dark, fairly burly Margaux, it really shined with some food. A nice contrast to D'Issan '00 if you're lucky to have some of that.

NW Chicago Pits 2000 Bordeaux versus 2001 Cali Cabernet (La Tasca - Arlington Heights): Dark purple color with a singing nose of black licorice, dark fruit and minerals. Fruit is forward and more than balancing the significant tannic structure. This wine is in a very good place tonight. Palate features Black fruits, earth and spice. Excellent showing.

Bouquet: Cassis, cedar, sweet pipe smoke, marzipan, sour cherry, but also plum jam and vanilla oak. With other words: a lot going on here.
On the palate this is extremely well balanced. Low acidity, pefectly integrated tannins – what a texture. But finish is rather short. 15-20 seconds. Doesn't get any better after time passing by. Did I wake up this beauty? Feels quite restrained, although it implies what it has got to offer (this balance!!!). I think it needs more time (3-5 years at least). If it keeps this kind of harmony it's worth while waiting for!!!
For now 90+ points.

Tasted at the Geyser Peak Blind Tasting Challenge. The retailer was selling this wine for $81. Inky dark color. Aromas of smoke, wet soil, and blackberries. Flavors of black cherry, mulberries, smoke, spicy black pepper and minerals. Tannins are soft, but sturdy, and the wine flows into a nice long finish.

Group average: 92.25 pts
Group rank: Shared 29th out of 48

Tasting note:
Pretty ripe red berry fruit with layers of smoke, espresso, a bit of medicinal notes or menthol. Appealing, well balanced and fresh nose, drinks reasonably now but rather simple.

Opened 1.5 hrs before drinking, no decant
Appearance: Deep ruby, very slight bricking

This wine is classically Giscours in the best possible way.

Almost three years since my previous note and it seems that this has now reached full maturity. The nose is very typical for a completely developed Giscours, but the palate is relatively slender and gravelly, with less authority and power than previously noted; the finish displays dried fruit and has good length. Drink soon.

The wine is fully mature.
At $150. a bottle, one might do better elsewhere!

Xmas dinner with whole family - turkey time!!
Two bottles decanted together - otherwise identical to my October note which I quote verbatim:
"The fruit has taken on a markedly rich damson and wild hedge fruit character surrounded by grainy integrated tannins, earth, liquorice and spice. Mellow, warm and inviting overall feel - not typically Margaux?
Has hit its peak but no rush, say up to 25yrs from vintage"
A third bottle was decanted separately and stoppered immediately as a back-up.

Shows quite a bit of a secondary side, with cedar, leather and tobacco notes, light fruit and a relatively soft wine , medium intensity. Not as much longevity promise as when we had it 2 years ago but still a very solid wine. 91-92

Dark ruby with a faded rim.

A screaming value at its $26 release price, and even worth it's going rate at ~$60. 91+
12/27: Similar to when first tasted with the coravin. Moderately aromatic nose, blackberry, mint, thyme; palate is full bodied, elegant but present tannins, good blackberry fruit, balanced alcohol; medium-plus finish.

I loved it!

This is a really great Bordeaux. I remember the release price of ca. 45$...

92 points.

There is some Pauillac-like graphite along with the Margaux floral aspect, and the wine is a good balance between young Cabernet assertiveness, tempered by a Margaux femininity. Very enjoyable. Drinking well today in a lush, primary way, and should develop secondary complexities with more age.

Black fruits and lead pencil-type notes. Margaux grace and fine, ample structure. Good balance, even being this young. Really nice.

This wine was humming tonight! Light tannins, with complex aromas and brooding deep fruit flavor. Outstanding!

A very classy, smooth wine. Drinking very well now but with the chops to last a while. Good fruit and a great mouthfeel.

restrained and elegant without being mindblowing. A delicate boquet and rather short finish.

Depth and elegance in this little jewel. Charming aromas of black and red fruits, flowers, cedar, tobacco and pepper. Medium full body, a lot of jammy fruit, sweet and feminine. Fine tannins and a long finish. Approachable now, but you can wait it without hurry.

Nice red purple color with the scent of red cherries and tart raspberries. Still fairly tannic, but settled down the next day.

Double decanted 2 horus prior tasting.
Dark, ruby color, translucent on the edges.

Dark purple color. Blackberries, cassis, blueberries cranberries and oak on the nose. Hints of tobacco develop after an hour in the glass. This smooth palate offers ripe, chocolate covered blackberries in the finish.

2000 Bordeaux Tasting (Chicago, IL): An excellent display of sweet jammy black fruit and sweet cassis in the nose. Spice, plums, minerals, smoke, cedar, and earth on a very lingering finish.

Union des Grand Crus de Bordeaux (2000 Vintage) (Intercontinental Hotel Chicago): Reddish black color with an earthy nose. A sharp focused wine with notes of dark fruit, licorice and blackberry. Medium bodied. Not as big as some of the other Bordeaux at the tasting. 90-91 points.
