For me WOTN of Rousseau CSJ 88/94/95/96/99/07 by a whisker for today's enjoyment. A very dark fruited palate, with noble earth, very "clean" / more pure than the other vintages, lots of stealth in this and probably great now but for next 20 years too. Lovely showing!

Purchased on release and stored in cold cellar. Medium ruby colour with no bricking and bright Tayberry bathed in barnboards on the nose. Palate still tight with a viscous blending of brambleberry's and Tulare tangy cherries, expanding on the back end with a silky, gamey white pepper finish. Very 1996 and a great CSJ still needing time. Rousseau CSJ perennially develops into one of the top ten 1er crus in Burgundy. Best 2026-2050.

Pre-2002 Rousseau Dinner (WS NYC): A step up from the '95, however not as open for business. I think the '96 needs more time to continue to develop, however, with a couple of hours of air, this did start to open and show a great depth and purity of fruit.

Hmm...vastly disappointed tonight. Bottle seemed to have been kept in great condition, but this example ended up not being the one. Nose was OK, some spearmint, homely aromas, but palate was just exhausted from the get go. Hesitant to post the score, but the hit rate has to be accounted for some how to warn of the risks

In a flight with '96 Chambertin and Bèze, and this holds its own for a while, particularly on the nose, before it is surpassed. The nose is the freshest and brightest right off the pop with tighter blue and red berry fruit and more pronounced wood details. Palate is cool and dark and even after several hours doesn't quite expand to the massive levels of the two Chambertins. This is both pleasant as well as technically strong in the sort of way that says come back later for best results. Bèze technically the strongest and most complete while the straight Chambertin was the most showy and enjoyable tonight.

this was my first bottle of Rousseau, had about ten years ago with Bernard L. and Gregg L. at a Menlo Park restaurant... the wine is now open if you give it several plus hours in decanter, do not skimp on this, very dense -- some might find it heavy, was a tiny bit surprised about this given the acidity of '96... anyway, great but blackish fruit on the palate, dense and bold, not "red and lifted" as I had expected... tons of spices and food flavor melange on this... and the nose was the same, culinary!... a great experience but did not meat my (perhaps unrealistic) expectations... I would buy the Jadot CSJ '15 for about 40% of the cost of this btl and wait two decades!

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Fourth Session (Clarity - Vienna, Virginia): Coiled nose displaying shy crystalline red fruit, cherry water, sour cherry, strawberry candy, a hint of licorice, onion, soy, cinnamon and limestone. Fully integrated yet very youthful palate, finely layered shy red fruit, very lean and shy, bright acidity, strong mineral and a medium long shy red fruit driven finish. This is a bit of letdown. I am not sure if this will become more expressive by gaining sous bois and other tertiary notes with further cellaring.

light cherry red color just starting to brick, on the nose unexpectedly serene, cherries, the barest hints of wet animal fur, on the palate quite young still and very tightly coiled, firm tannin and structure, mid to full weight fruit still in hiding to some degree, fine finish with a lengthy fragrant aftertaste, game, cherries, chalk tones, continues to build in scale with air but remains deft, at a point where a few very storied 1996s are starting to get a bit dusty on the tail end- this remains balanced and evolving at a glacial pace, exceptional potential here and I think this wine's best days will be upon us soon.

Maybe this was just a bad bottle, but it had been stored in ideal conditions throughout its life. Just seemed well past its best. Hopefully my 02 is better..... Initial nose was quite encouraging, good pinot noir expression but when tasted lacked any intensity or complexity. Very disappointing. *

Translucent brick with a pale rim. Lots of fruit (still) on the nose, blackberries, black cherries, prunes, earth, and a hint of barn-yard. Subtle, silky palate, a bit lacking in power and concentration, but very complex nevertheless. Delicious!

Paired with 1996 Ruchottes-Chambertin, it took a while for this wine to separate itself in style from the Ruchottes, but eventually the gamy darker fruit and the bigger body show. This wine is still quite young and has lots of development ahead of it. Cellared since original release. Life could be a lot worse than starting a Tuesday evening with 2007 Raveneau Butteaux and then moving on to these two wonderful Rousseaus.

Clear, medium garnet in colour. Clean nose, pronounced aromas of dried but ripe red fruits (cherry, strawberry), hints of dark fruit too, spice, tea, great tertiary complexity of forest floor, mushroom, smoke, vegetal. Fully developed. Dry palate, high acidity, medium (-) tannins, fully resolved but adding some structure, medium alcohol, medium (+) body, great richness and depth with layers of pronounced flavours similar to the nose, long finish. Outstanding mature red Burgundy, at peak drinking but no hurry to drink up as it has great concentration of fruit balanced by the high acidity. This is wine that you just wanted to go on and on (the finish certainly did) - the depth of aromas and flavours was extraordinary. Very lucky to have tried this.

Served blind, I thought this was Chambertin. My note was "complete and pretty, while I enjoy it's not the best Chambertin I've had by far." Again I remain suspicious that glasses were reversed. If this was CSJ it was the best I've had, as I usually don't like this vineyard. The nose was much more sexy than any other CSJ I've ever had.

A 40th Birthday Celebration, Dinner Edition (Atlas Bistro - Scottsdale AZ): Single blind alongside '96 Chambertin. Completely reductive, this remained backward and inaccessible to me for several hours. Clearly having dense black fruit with good concentration, but a real perplexing bottle, unlike any previous example of this wine. Others were able to get past the reduction and really enjoyed the wine.

Spectacular. Initially higher-toned and red-fruited, showing the (in)famous '96 acidity. But with air, it blossomed and deepened into a stupendous wine. Sweet, dark (although still red), earthy fruit. Hints of black tea and orange peel. Texture is mostly silk, but velvet peeking through here and there. Spectacular aroma, great length, and a glorious wine. I admit to being a bit dismayed by how damn good this is, because now I'll seriously consider spending the tariff to taste it again some day.

Rousseau Dinner (Vaucluse): [Magnum] Possibly attributable to the format but the best example of this enjoyed so far. Rich and intense red fruit with a coffee edge. That's an incredibly fresh nose offering a complex array of berries, spices, and earth. Gorgeous on the palate, silky at first but expanding into a full and robust dose of terroir laden red fruit. Distinct minerality extends through a long finish. Really great tonight...

An extraordinary CSJ and, in fact, the greatest CSJ I've ever tasted. There is a fabulous floral lift to this wine which is big and concentrated but so perfectly balanced by grippy acids and crisp tannins. The finish is so pure cherry complexity with great mineral notes. Rousseau bombed it in '96 and this is drinking better than the Beze and Chamb right now but all 3 are potential 100 point wines. 97+

Gevrey-Chambertin Dinner (Nicolas Restaurant, Teck Lim Street, Singapore): Third bottle in the last few years, and this has been consistently excellent. Opened at 12pm to prepare it for dinner service later in the day, it had a lovely nose when poured, with masculine aromas of bacon and umami, an undertone of gentle earthy mineral notes, and draws of plums and dark cherries, all this edged by a touch of exotic spice. Beautiful. A deeper, darker bouquet than that on the 2001 Rousseau Caeztiers that we had alongside. The palate also felt darker then the Cazetiers', with a weightier, thicker mouthfeel showing in its notes of plums and dried cherries. It was perhaps less transparent than its stable-mate, but was certainly more moreish, with a muscular, meaty feel under its fruit, and a spine of lovely resolved tannins still lending the wine a great sense of structure. Grand Cru quality for sure. Yet even with the bigger feel, this was also wonderful poised and balanced, with a perfectly integrated feel all the way into a lovely finish loaded with mineral and warm spice. While this always felt fresh, the depth of the wine absorbed its acidity very well, so that there was none of the 1996 zip and bite that one still gets in some wines from the vintage. A great drop, certainly more classically Rousseau in the way it was put together than the Cazetiers. Starting to drink well now as well. Excellent.

Rousseau dinner at Jade Palace. A tad advanced in appearance for its age, and considering I've had better bottles of this recently, I would say this is also not a representative bottle. Medium red with lots of bricking throughout. Lovely nose though - wood spice, violets, cherries, plums, leather, earth and beef broth. On the palate, good balance with a really firm structure, with good grip, but again, for a 96, there seemed to be a lack of acidity and freshness. (on a bad run of 96s recently!). Sour cherries, red plum, earth, smoked meat. There was soy, sweat and barnyard with extended time, so again, it probably just confirms my thoughts that the bottle was not of optimal condition.

1996 Red Burgundy Horizontal: Wafting and expressive bouquet of soft red cherry fruit, drying rose petals, drying cherries, menthol, rustic underbrush, brambles, hay, and soil, acrylics and ceramics. Soft on the palate at first but expands / crescendos into a robust and lengthy finish. Tingling mouthfeel, animal and rustic but also elegant. Decidedly the wine of the night out of this mega 1996 horizontal. Outstanding from the rest of the pack... a pretty good pack. The Hudellot-Noellat RSV and Dujac Echezeaux came close but ultimately this was better built and had more nose and finish.

Bodacious Bootylicious Burgundies for a Birthday Boy (Patina DTLA): The palate was fresher than a kid from Philly who got in trouble on the bball court and was forced to live with his aunty and uncle in bel air. Full of zest and minerality, everything was just popping on the tongue. Needed about 30 minutes to settle down as it was a bit spritzy. 1996 / 1999 / 2001 Burgundy Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): Very good indeed, even if it was overshadowed by a stupendous bottle of 1999 Muginer Les Amoureuses on the same flight. Between the pair of great 1er Crus, this clearly came across poorer; but take nothing away from it though – it was a smashing wine by any standards, easily the equal of the quartet of Grand Crus that came in the next flight. The nose here had a strange sweet corn-like smell at first, but that lifted quite quickly to show a wonderful panoply of red fruits laced with a bit of minerally earth and a gentle seasoning of fragrant spice. I thought there was a beautiful Gevrey character to that bouquet. It had a beautiful palate too, very polished, with a lush mouthful of sweet red cherries and berries, earth and meat, and more of that gentle spiciness tailing off into a long finish. There was plenty of the elegant strength and cool minerality of the terroir showing underneath the fruit, along with the wonderful breath of 1996’s fresh acidity. However, even as the Les Amoureuses before it was uncharacteristically silky and elegant for a 1999, this had an unusual lushness and generosity for a 1996, especially for a CSJ, showing very full in the palate. It was especially beautiful with a lamb and bacon dish; something magical happened in the mouth, with the freshness from the wine cutting through the meat, and the food in its turn bringing out wonderful layers and complexity in the wine. Drank twice (last bottle in 2012), with very similar impressions - this is lovely stuff, opening up drinking quite nicely now, but with still a long life ahead of it.

Matched to pressed duck at Edulis. Dark red fruit and earthy barn yard nose, lot of complexity. The palate really showed why this wine is so respected. Tannins are fine and subdued, but still there.; great balance, fruit flavours clean and just the right acidity. Long finish.

CENA BORGOGNA GATTO NERO (RISTORANTE GATTO NERO TORINO): Degustato alla cieca. Il profilo è simile al Richebourg di Méo-Camuzet, addirittura più profumato e fine, meno sparato. Rose, viole, fiori di ogni colore e sapore.... una carezza di primavera. La grandezza di Rousseau sta nel vestire uno Gevrey di annata classica e austera, con la grazia e la leggerezza di uno Chambolle tutto profumo e pizzicotti. Se il naso è da 101 centesimi, la bocca non riesce del tutto a mascherare l' annata ( meno male!!) e scopri un vino quasi sottile, in cui acidità, medio-corpo e graffio, sono ancora in gioco, ma ormai legati indissolubilmente alla trama aromatica incantevole. Consiglio di attendere ancora qualche anno per aggiungere maturità al palato. Vino incantevole che conserva tutti i caratteri del suo terroir e non li perderà mai: la persistenza è cesellata e tramata di acuti piuttosto che dalla possenza foderante di un Grand Cru, ma la classe è immensa e sufficiente per innamorarsene.

Wow, our next (1st) pair of reds came roaring out of the gates, & literally set the stage for the rest of the night. Led by this (which would later be proclaimed WOTN by most), with some slight bricking around the edges. Its nose would be one to remember - violets, roses, spices and tea-leaves. If I recalled correctly, none had it as a Gevrey... Palate was as great, w/ red-berries, more spices, good depth, suave & long! That earthly element finally emerged after quite a while in the glass. Incredible!

"1er" Dinner at the American Club to determine which plots belong to a "Grand Cru" status. The sommelier served this as the very first red (out of a total of 8), and what a standard this set. Dark red, with a touch of brown at the rim. The nose was stunning, chambolle like in its floral perfume, red roses and violets. There were lots of wild strawberries, raspberries, jam, with good acidity, a touch of rusticity and soil, with almost perfect balance. The Gevrey profile took some time to emerge, but when it did, it completed the brilliance of this wine. Would any of the remaining 7 wines be able to stand up to this opener? Verdict on Grand Cru worthiness - Definitely, for this amazing plot.

Bottle was in great shape, but the wine didn't ring my bells. It's really tannic and not showing much. This is a common problem with '96's but what's really crazy is that the '96 Beze is "open for business" so I would have thought this would be too.

Pale/medium garnet core, pale mahogany rim. Nose is quite developed, complex, with sweet strawberry fruit, floral top-notes, game and hints of liquorice and undergrowth. Medium bodied, soft and gently savoury, plenty of sweet red fruit, some plum, with richness yet elegance and grace, vibrant acidity carrying a long finish. Outstanding, drinking beautifully and likely to stay that way for some time to come.

We have had this wine from the same case 3 times now, albeit the last time was 3 years ago. Variation here so not sure what is representative. The last bottle we tried we rated 93 (back in May 2011) but last night was a bit underwhelming and lacked complexity and finesse. Was a good 90 but not the wine we expected. Maybe better luck next time..

It's hard to put into words just how spectacular this bottle of CSJ was. Like being in a raspberry patch on a hot summer day -- aromas and flavors of ripe red earthy concentrated fruit, dancing midpalate, long lingering finish. The nose -- haunting -- crazy stuff. Strikingly youthful but delicious nonetheless. Another favorite burg over the last year that I've had the pleasure to have tasted. Rockstar juice. If I see this one at auction, I'll be all over it.

Bordeaux v Burgundy III; 7/7/2012-7/9/2012 (The Square, London): Sitting in the perfect intersection of maturity, depth and funkiness. Impressive nose that swells up with sweet cherries, barnyard and red fruits. A slight spritz on the front of the tongue was a touch off putting, but overall this was excellent.

Farewell to Blu Dinner (Blu, Shangri-La, Singapore): This was truly excellent, indeed drinking more like a Grand Cru than a 1er Cru. It had a tremendous nose, with a very Gevrey character to its earthy, meaty, ever so slightly funky barnyard notes that floated out of the glass alongside deep wafts of dark cherries, dried flowers and a sprinkle of sweet spice. An incredible nose - seductive, perfumy stuff, yet all meaty and earthy at the same time. Really solid on the palate too. Rather more overtly masuline than I would normally relate with Rousseau's style, it was rich and sappy, with some lovely dark cherry fruit on the attack wed to a strong, bassy backdrop of earthy sous bois and meaty notes that really formed the core character of the wine. It was so fleshy in fact that I would have said it was almost un-1996 save for the lovely fresh acidity that ran through its rich flavours, helping to lend a lacier feel to the wine's finish, where little bits of spice drifted out algonside more dark fruit and earthy, minerally notes. This was not quite the longest nor the most powerful Rousseau that I have had in recent times nor, perhaps more unfortunately, was it the most defined nor focused. A bit unusual for a 1996, where one might have expected a bit more chiselled acidity and structure. However, while it may not have lived up to the lofty standards of the Domaine's very top wines, it would certainly have thumped many a Chapelle, Mazis or Charmes Chambertin from lesser producers. A very solid wine at a nice place, but I have a feeling that there is still a lot more in the tank here. A treat now, but it should be even better in 3-4 years.

Dark brownish core with light rim. Complex, high tone note of dried flower, almost caramelize sweet plum and blackberry, truffles, chili leaves and sweet herbs. With time, savory meatiness, star anise and mineral note emerged. Really seductive. The entry is quite acidic which is the character of the vintage. It wrapped up at the mid palate with sweet dark fruits, mineral and dry extract which formed really attractive mid palate depth. The medium level of tannin is firm and grippy along with solid structure. Long and powerful finished, lingering with spices, mineral and autumn leaves nuances. Really good. Grand Cru quality for sure. 92-93+

Popped and poured. Dark ruby. Gorgeous nose of dark, smoky fruits and spice. Still a baby, shows younger than the other bottles of this i have had. Starting to show a touch of tertiary development with some earth, but still dominated by the dark, spiced fruit. Incredibly rich. Long, long finish. I can't wait to see where this goes over the next 10-20 years. My score is conservative.

Burgs at Siggy's: Medium red color. Awesome nose of red fruit, spice/cinnamon and earth. On the palate this has plenty of sweet red fruit with some spice/brown sugar. Medium weight and very well balanced (just enough acidity). Great finish. Overall this is very elegant and most pleasing but probably a wine that will benefit form additional time in the cellar.

Huge nose and the palate is really lovely - rich, pure and beautiful character with a not so great hint of rot in the mid-palate, but is nicely smooth - dances! The fruit is not particularly dense, however. Doug says lychee, and Basil says PMS. Hmmm.

Serious Burgundy night (Chez Rosa-Teixeira, Limmerston St, London): Once again , just like out previous TN, there was a bit of undiluted CO2 on the palate. Decanting helped remove this, but still raises the question about the quality of the bottle. Powerfull, big and serious wine. Deep concentreated nose, and very vibrant, intense on the palate. Very good. 92-93, drink now

Red brown. Beautiful mature aromas warm, round plumy, beetroot nose, quite powerful. Lovely balance lots of flavour, smooth, velvety with some acidity and faint tannin on the finish. Paired with barbecued chicken marinated in soy sauce, chilli and ginger with potato and salad and went well. Excellent (90-94)

Now mature, the redcurrant and raspberry fruit having matured to something more vegetal, with a touch of compost. Quite intense palate, complete and long. I like this a lot, but I doubt it is worth the current price.

Zachys La Paulee "Warm-up" Dinner (Tribeca Grill - New York, NY): Black fruit on nose with espresso, fresh herbs and meaty spice. Not sure if there was something wrong with the bottle but judging from the previous TNs there musthave been hence we will not rate. The nose was seductive and big and all that you wanted to find from a wine of this caliber. But on the palate there were traces of "fiziness" like CO2. Maybe a bad batch but even after a couple of hours in a decanter those persisted. Such a shame, maybe better luck next time. For the record we love the 1996 Gevreys and we find them peticularly open. Especially such beauties such as the 96 Serafin Charmes Chambertin.

Opening night for Heidi's 2.0. Double-decanted about 2 hours before dinner. Room-filling perfume upon opening. Meat juice/broth -- masculine personality. Layers of expansive red fruit, spices, and earth. Silky and medium-weight, with a slyly powerful palate that builds to a crescendo on the finish. Alternated between closed and open all evening. Long and regal. Just a majestic showing for this still-young wine.

Lovely, pure wine. Very prominent iron flavors. Light in body but filled in nicely. Had hoped for lsightly more aromatic complexity. Tannins slightly firming and I wonder if this is going to improve significantly from here as the fruit is fading.

Pre-condo closing dinner w/ Chris. Medium maroon red color. Soaring aromatics of earth, meat juice, tobacco, and sour cherry, which carry through to the palate and culminate in a long, mineral-infused, ripely tannic finish. This is full of meat, earth, and (with some swirling) layered red fruit. Terrific but would likely benefit from a few more years of cellaring.

Clear, light ruby with orange hue rim. Acidity is still high and fine tannin. Noticeable but balanced oak. Aroma is very closed in the beginning but started to open after 20 mins decanting. Grapefruit, cherry, strawberry pop up at the beginning, and very attractive Violet aroma appeared after 30 mins. Long finish with a bit bitter tannin. I have tasted its vintage 98 which jas more red fruite and juicy, but vintage 1996 has more complexity, depth and elegancy. It is really a great Clos St. Jacques!!

A beautifully earthy bottle of red Burgundy with gorgeous spicy cherry fruit and a very finely concentrated finish. Has a wonderful elegant intensity and excellent complexity on the finish with notes of ferrous and other minerals. This seems perfectly mature and ready for drinking right now.

Rousseau Dinner @ St Johns The 96's were both high acid but the CSJ was able to offset it with its very good balance, it had a real cherry nose and cherry flavor in the mouth and a little zip as it went down a very nice CSJ fill the glass

St Jacques Burgundy Offline (Tom's Kitchen, Chelsea): Lovely, complex nose. Smoke, red fruits, some gamey notes and caramel. Lovely purity to this. Actaully a little closed on the palate, noticeable, but fine tannins, lovely purity again with sweet red fruits and a touch of caramel, long finish with lovely balancing acidity. Excellent.

For me WOTN of Rousseau CSJ 88/94/95/96/99/07 by a whisker for today's enjoyment. A very dark fruited palate, with noble earth, very "clean" / more pure than the other vintages, lots of stealth in this and probably great now but for next 20 years too. Lovely showing!

Purchased on release and stored in cold cellar. Medium ruby colour with no bricking and bright Tayberry bathed in barnboards on the nose. Palate still tight with a viscous blending of brambleberry's and Tulare tangy cherries, expanding on the back end with a silky, gamey white pepper finish. Very 1996 and a great CSJ still needing time. Rousseau CSJ perennially develops into one of the top ten 1er crus in Burgundy. Best 2026-2050.

Pre-2002 Rousseau Dinner (WS NYC): A step up from the '95, however not as open for business. I think the '96 needs more time to continue to develop, however, with a couple of hours of air, this did start to open and show a great depth and purity of fruit.

In a flight with '96 Chambertin and Bèze, and this holds its own for a while, particularly on the nose, before it is surpassed. The nose is the freshest and brightest right off the pop with tighter blue and red berry fruit and more pronounced wood details. Palate is cool and dark and even after several hours doesn't quite expand to the massive levels of the two Chambertins. This is both pleasant as well as technically strong in the sort of way that says come back later for best results. Bèze technically the strongest and most complete while the straight Chambertin was the most showy and enjoyable tonight.

light cherry red color just starting to brick, on the nose unexpectedly serene, cherries, the barest hints of wet animal fur, on the palate quite young still and very tightly coiled, firm tannin and structure, mid to full weight fruit still in hiding to some degree, fine finish with a lengthy fragrant aftertaste, game, cherries, chalk tones, continues to build in scale with air but remains deft, at a point where a few very storied 1996s are starting to get a bit dusty on the tail end- this remains balanced and evolving at a glacial pace, exceptional potential here and I think this wine's best days will be upon us soon.

Paired with 1996 Ruchottes-Chambertin, it took a while for this wine to separate itself in style from the Ruchottes, but eventually the gamy darker fruit and the bigger body show. This wine is still quite young and has lots of development ahead of it. Cellared since original release. Life could be a lot worse than starting a Tuesday evening with 2007 Raveneau Butteaux and then moving on to these two wonderful Rousseaus.

Phenomenal tetriary flavors with great depth. the fruit was there onthe attacke and deepened to a dark berry on the long finish. this was even better after an hour. maybe this is the youngest that we should be drinking Rousseaus toget the full advantage of them

This is wine that you just wanted to go on and on (the finish certainly did) - the depth of aromas and flavours was extraordinary. Very lucky to have tried this.

Served blind, I thought this was Chambertin. My note was "complete and pretty, while I enjoy it's not the best Chambertin I've had by far." Again I remain suspicious that glasses were reversed. If this was CSJ it was the best I've had, as I usually don't like this vineyard. The nose was much more sexy than any other CSJ I've ever had.

Spectacular. Initially higher-toned and red-fruited, showing the (in)famous '96 acidity. But with air, it blossomed and deepened into a stupendous wine. Sweet, dark (although still red), earthy fruit. Hints of black tea and orange peel. Texture is mostly silk, but velvet peeking through here and there. Spectacular aroma, great length, and a glorious wine. I admit to being a bit dismayed by how damn good this is, because now I'll seriously consider spending the tariff to taste it again some day.

An extraordinary CSJ and, in fact, the greatest CSJ I've ever tasted. There is a fabulous floral lift to this wine which is big and concentrated but so perfectly balanced by grippy acids and crisp tannins. The finish is so pure cherry complexity with great mineral notes. Rousseau bombed it in '96 and this is drinking better than the Beze and Chamb right now but all 3 are potential 100 point wines. 97+

Gevrey-Chambertin Dinner (Nicolas Restaurant, Teck Lim Street, Singapore): Third bottle in the last few years, and this has been consistently excellent. Opened at 12pm to prepare it for dinner service later in the day, it had a lovely nose when poured, with masculine aromas of bacon and umami, an undertone of gentle earthy mineral notes, and draws of plums and dark cherries, all this edged by a touch of exotic spice. Beautiful. A deeper, darker bouquet than that on the 2001 Rousseau Caeztiers that we had alongside. The palate also felt darker then the Cazetiers', with a weightier, thicker mouthfeel showing in its notes of plums and dried cherries. It was perhaps less transparent than its stable-mate, but was certainly more moreish, with a muscular, meaty feel under its fruit, and a spine of lovely resolved tannins still lending the wine a great sense of structure. Grand Cru quality for sure. Yet even with the bigger feel, this was also wonderful poised and balanced, with a perfectly integrated feel all the way into a lovely finish loaded with mineral and warm spice. While this always felt fresh, the depth of the wine absorbed its acidity very well, so that there was none of the 1996 zip and bite that one still gets in some wines from the vintage. A great drop, certainly more classically Rousseau in the way it was put together than the Cazetiers. Starting to drink well now as well. Excellent.

Rousseau dinner at Jade Palace. A tad advanced in appearance for its age, and considering I've had better bottles of this recently, I would say this is also not a representative bottle. Medium red with lots of bricking throughout. Lovely nose though - wood spice, violets, cherries, plums, leather, earth and beef broth. On the palate, good balance with a really firm structure, with good grip, but again, for a 96, there seemed to be a lack of acidity and freshness. (on a bad run of 96s recently!). Sour cherries, red plum, earth, smoked meat. There was soy, sweat and barnyard with extended time, so again, it probably just confirms my thoughts that the bottle was not of optimal condition.

1996 / 1999 / 2001 Burgundy Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): Very good indeed, even if it was overshadowed by a stupendous bottle of 1999 Muginer Les Amoureuses on the same flight. Between the pair of great 1er Crus, this clearly came across poorer; but take nothing away from it though – it was a smashing wine by any standards, easily the equal of the quartet of Grand Crus that came in the next flight. The nose here had a strange sweet corn-like smell at first, but that lifted quite quickly to show a wonderful panoply of red fruits laced with a bit of minerally earth and a gentle seasoning of fragrant spice. I thought there was a beautiful Gevrey character to that bouquet. It had a beautiful palate too, very polished, with a lush mouthful of sweet red cherries and berries, earth and meat, and more of that gentle spiciness tailing off into a long finish. There was plenty of the elegant strength and cool minerality of the terroir showing underneath the fruit, along with the wonderful breath of 1996’s fresh acidity. However, even as the Les Amoureuses before it was uncharacteristically silky and elegant for a 1999, this had an unusual lushness and generosity for a 1996, especially for a CSJ, showing very full in the palate. It was especially beautiful with a lamb and bacon dish; something magical happened in the mouth, with the freshness from the wine cutting through the meat, and the food in its turn bringing out wonderful layers and complexity in the wine. Drank twice (last bottle in 2012), with very similar impressions - this is lovely stuff, opening up drinking quite nicely now, but with still a long life ahead of it.

Matched to pressed duck at Edulis. Dark red fruit and earthy barn yard nose, lot of complexity. The palate really showed why this wine is so respected. Tannins are fine and subdued, but still there.; great balance, fruit flavours clean and just the right acidity. Long finish.

CENA BORGOGNA GATTO NERO (RISTORANTE GATTO NERO TORINO): Degustato alla cieca. Il profilo è simile al Richebourg di Méo-Camuzet, addirittura più profumato e fine, meno sparato. Rose, viole, fiori di ogni colore e sapore.... una carezza di primavera. La grandezza di Rousseau sta nel vestire uno Gevrey di annata classica e austera, con la grazia e la leggerezza di uno Chambolle tutto profumo e pizzicotti.
Se il naso è da 101 centesimi, la bocca non riesce del tutto a mascherare l' annata ( meno male!!) e scopri un vino quasi sottile, in cui acidità, medio-corpo e graffio, sono ancora in gioco, ma ormai legati indissolubilmente alla trama aromatica incantevole.
Consiglio di attendere ancora qualche anno per aggiungere maturità al palato.
Vino incantevole che conserva tutti i caratteri del suo terroir e non li perderà mai: la persistenza è cesellata e tramata di acuti piuttosto che dalla possenza foderante di un Grand Cru, ma la classe è immensa e sufficiente per innamorarsene.

Wow, our next (1st) pair of reds came roaring out of the gates, & literally set the stage for the rest of the night. Led by this (which would later be proclaimed WOTN by most), with some slight bricking around the edges. Its nose would be one to remember - violets, roses, spices and tea-leaves. If I recalled correctly, none had it as a Gevrey... Palate was as great, w/ red-berries, more spices, good depth, suave & long! That earthly element finally emerged after quite a while in the glass. Incredible!

"1er" Dinner at the American Club to determine which plots belong to a "Grand Cru" status. The sommelier served this as the very first red (out of a total of 8), and what a standard this set. Dark red, with a touch of brown at the rim. The nose was stunning, chambolle like in its floral perfume, red roses and violets. There were lots of wild strawberries, raspberries, jam, with good acidity, a touch of rusticity and soil, with almost perfect balance. The Gevrey profile took some time to emerge, but when it did, it completed the brilliance of this wine. Would any of the remaining 7 wines be able to stand up to this opener? Verdict on Grand Cru worthiness - Definitely, for this amazing plot.

Pale/medium garnet core, pale mahogany rim. Nose is quite developed, complex, with sweet strawberry fruit, floral top-notes, game and hints of liquorice and undergrowth. Medium bodied, soft and gently savoury, plenty of sweet red fruit, some plum, with richness yet elegance and grace, vibrant acidity carrying a long finish. We have had this wine from the same case 3 times now, albeit the last time was 3 years ago. Variation here so not sure what is representative. The last bottle we tried we rated 93 (back in May 2011) but last night was a bit underwhelming and lacked complexity and finesse. Was a good 90 but not the wine we expected. Maybe better luck next time..

Farewell to Blu Dinner (Blu, Shangri-La, Singapore): This was truly excellent, indeed drinking more like a Grand Cru than a 1er Cru. It had a tremendous nose, with a very Gevrey character to its earthy, meaty, ever so slightly funky barnyard notes that floated out of the glass alongside deep wafts of dark cherries, dried flowers and a sprinkle of sweet spice. An incredible nose - seductive, perfumy stuff, yet all meaty and earthy at the same time. Really solid on the palate too. Rather more overtly masuline than I would normally relate with Rousseau's style, it was rich and sappy, with some lovely dark cherry fruit on the attack wed to a strong, bassy backdrop of earthy sous bois and meaty notes that really formed the core character of the wine. It was so fleshy in fact that I would have said it was almost un-1996 save for the lovely fresh acidity that ran through its rich flavours, helping to lend a lacier feel to the wine's finish, where little bits of spice drifted out algonside more dark fruit and earthy, minerally notes. This was not quite the longest nor the most powerful Rousseau that I have had in recent times nor, perhaps more unfortunately, was it the most defined nor focused. A bit unusual for a 1996, where one might have expected a bit more chiselled acidity and structure. However, while it may not have lived up to the lofty standards of the Domaine's very top wines, it would certainly have thumped many a Chapelle, Mazis or Charmes Chambertin from lesser producers. A very solid wine at a nice place, but I have a feeling that there is still a lot more in the tank here. A treat now, but it should be even better in 3-4 years.

Dark brownish core with light rim. Complex, high tone note of dried flower, almost caramelize sweet plum and blackberry, truffles, chili leaves and sweet herbs. With time, savory meatiness, star anise and mineral note emerged. Really seductive. The entry is quite acidic which is the character of the vintage. It wrapped up at the mid palate with sweet dark fruits, mineral and dry extract which formed really attractive mid palate depth. The medium level of tannin is firm and grippy along with solid structure. Long and powerful finished, lingering with spices, mineral and autumn leaves nuances. Really good. Grand Cru quality for sure. 92-93+

Starting to show a touch of tertiary development with some earth, but still dominated by the dark, spiced fruit. Incredibly rich. Long, long finish. I can't wait to see where this goes over the next 10-20 years. My score is conservative.

Serious Burgundy night (Chez Rosa-Teixeira, Limmerston St, London): Once again , just like out previous TN, there was a bit of undiluted CO2 on the palate. Decanting helped remove this, but still raises the question about the quality of the bottle.

Red brown. Beautiful mature aromas warm, round plumy, beetroot nose, quite powerful. Lovely balance lots of flavour, smooth, velvety with some acidity and faint tannin on the finish. Paired with barbecued chicken marinated in soy sauce, chilli and ginger with potato and salad and went well. Excellent (90-94)

The nose was seductive and big and all that you wanted to find from a wine of this caliber. But on the palate there were traces of "fiziness" like CO2. Maybe a bad batch but even after a couple of hours in a decanter those persisted. Such a shame, maybe better luck next time.
For the record we love the 1996 Gevreys and we find them peticularly open. Especially such beauties such as the 96 Serafin Charmes Chambertin.

Opening night for Heidi's 2.0. Double-decanted about 2 hours before dinner. Room-filling perfume upon opening. Meat juice/broth -- masculine personality. Layers of expansive red fruit, spices, and earth. Silky and medium-weight, with a slyly powerful palate that builds to a crescendo on the finish. Alternated between closed and open all evening. Long and regal. Just a majestic showing for this still-young wine.

Grapefruit, cherry, strawberry pop up at the beginning, and very attractive Violet aroma appeared after 30 mins. Long finish with a bit bitter tannin. I have tasted its vintage 98 which jas more red fruite and juicy, but vintage 1996 has more complexity, depth and elegancy. It is really a great Clos St. Jacques!!
