Medium ruby. Medium body. High acidity. Brett(leather), coffee, bayleaf, violet, greentea. Fruit is ripe and dark; black cherry, boysenberry, black currant. Slight jammy and sovory midpalate with a note of iron. Quite tannic and chewy texture. Finishes with a blacktea note. It does not taste like Gamay. It tastes more like Pinot Noir or even light-bodies Merlot.

Co sister with previous notes. Significantly darker and more savory than the rest of Foillard’s wines. More Northern Rhône in style, but delicious nonetheless.

Ruby. Herbal red fruit. Light to medium weight. Tremendous juxtaposition of sweet black cherry attack, and tart, fennel-laced, saline Gamay finish. No brett here, which is a big relief compared to other bottles. My last bottle of this, and it finished with a real flourish.

Dark fruit, menthol, cherries, and violet notes on the nose. Great acidity with tart dark berries, sour cherries, and a hint of green notes on the palate. Nice finish. A lovely Beaujolais and quite a bit darker than Foillard’s Morgon wines.

Big wine for a Bojo. Chunky. If tasted blind I would have guessed California. Still eminently drinkable, but better in it's youth. tannins become more noticeable with time. Somewhat hot on the finish. '09 was a great vintage, but "14 and '15 are better to drink now.

Drank along 2009 Cote du Py and 3.14. A lot darker, with savory, dark berries, and cherry notes on the nose. Very interesting, with maybe a hint of VA. Good acidity (more than the Morgons), dark cherries, and berries on the palate. Long finish. So different compared to the Morgons, yet very good. However, it did decline a bit throughout the night compared to its peers.

After trying a bottle last month that was less than exciting, this was right back on form and much more vibrant and fresh. Light ruby. Cherry and a bit of animal on the nose. Light to medium weight. Sweet cherry and red berry, soil, a touch of thyme, and lively acidity with more blood orange than cranberry. Utterly delicious on this occasion. This particular bottle could have withstood another 5 years of aging.

Light ruby with some fading. Much less forthcoming fruit than several years ago, although with an hour of air, more cherry shows. Light, strong acidity, cranberry, red fruit, and soil flavors. Very good at this point, but I suspect past its pinnacle.

Last drank Feb 2016. One left. LOVED three prior bottles. Opened last one and letting it air. Definitely feels a bit closed and tight at the moment. Also, still not a huge fan of the crumbly wax seal. Getting slight fruit but more baking spice from nose of bottle. Initial small pour was full of (I think?) broken bits of the wax seal. Tasted watered down and somewhat bitter. Opted to decant. Layer of sediment on floor of bottle. Medium plus ruby but not vibrant. A bit cloudy. Pale rim.
Decant made a difference - 1 1/2 hours.
Appearance - deep ruby. Cloudy, pale rim. Not vibrant. Where the red aspect of ruby is turning a bit brown.
Nose - youthful! All things considered for a 2009. But developing. Medium intensity, bramble berries. Baking spices. Getting slight alcohol burn on nose. Jammy smell. Hard to discern specific fruit. A red/black berry fruit spread
Palate - fruit is there but focus is more on development flavors and mouth feel. Acidity is still there, medium, alcohol medium, body is medium plus. Not so much in terms of tannins but rather the viscosity in mouth. The wine feels thick. There is a bitterness that is quite noticeable and not something I'm loving. That is a new feature of age. Getting more terroir. Wet leaves, forest floor, there is some menthol that comes through. Bitterness feels like stems and pits, not tannin, but bitter. I'd say tannins are medium. Finish is medium/medium plus. You get some bittersweet chocolate on finish. Tobacco.
The wine has definitely changed. Still drinkable and not like your typical gamay but not the stellar wine it was to me Jan and Feb 2016. My recommendation is to drink them if you have them and maybe save a couple for experiment to see how they continue to age but not a wine (this vintage) where I would buy more.

Fully saturated ruby throughout. Now more black fruited and brambly than it has been before. Rich 2009 texture, but over the past year since last tasted, it has seemingly shed some of its fat and now shows more structure and minerality with typical Gamay cranberry notes. Excellent development which will surely appeal to those who found this too lush in the early going. It has the material to go on for at least another decade. Yes, some of these '09 crus are too fat, but I don't think a wine like this should be written off because of its unusual amplitude and concentration.

A different expression of Fleurie than what I have had before. The fruit is atypically dark and the body fuller, this brings my thoughts to southern Rhone a little bit, with some plum in the taste that I would not expect in Gamay. The structure of the wine as well as the overall impression is more that of a good pinot noir from a warm vintage in a cool climate or perhaps the opposite, cool vintage in a warm climate... Anyway, a nice wine that went well with my meal of grilled chicken and halloumi, probably more so than a more typical Fleurie!

As good as it was in it's youth, but exuberant fruit evolves to complexity. Bananas and a little alcohol on the nose lead to a well balanced complex fruity palate with good acidity. As good as Beaujolais gets. Begs for one more sip. Easy wine to drink and understand on a primal level.

About as good as Cru Beaujolais gets. Very burgundian. Nice fruity nose, but perhaps a note of alcohol. This is probably unavoidable given the ripeness of the vintage. Fruit front and center on the palate. Good acidity and finish. Years like 2009 don't come around often enough in Beaujolais.

Medium, even ruby. Cherry, floral tones, and a touch of green. Unusual glycerine and texture for Gamay. Superb interplay of tart and ripe red fruit with underlying soil and a dash of chocolate. The complexity has really burgeoned over the past few years. Iconic Beaujolais.

Forward, sexy, very drinkable. More like riper Pinot than gamay. Not the usual mineral, feminine Fleurie style of this wine but a very happy drinker today with enough body to hold its own against robust flavored food.

Medium center with some fading at extreme edge. Pungent aromatics of red fruit. Tart cherry and black raspberry, more body than the usual Gamay. Beautiful thread of herbs and strong stoniness on the finish. Much more developed, complex, and less fruit driven than it was several years ago. Excellent!
Right now my runaway winner for WOTY. As usual, breathed in glasses a little under an hour. Beet red, but clear color- stunning to look at. The nose keeps coming with blackberries & herbs, but shows layers that defy description following them is like catching fireflies eventually you just have to enjoy the show.
The palate here is remarkably textured. A silkiness pervades with black & raspberries which hit the perfect balance of fleshiness & richness, but show the restraint to draw you back again & again. The mid palate is on display at perfect weight & is a never ending mix of some brighter almost apricot notes & black pepper. The finish is long & quite beautiful and is accentuated with a beautiful tannic structure. The fruit and acid balance on this wine is truly something to behold. Elegance and power in harmony.
Paired with a roast chicken & fresh vegetable pasta from the Farmers market. Stunning & a testament to the greatness of the 2009 Beaujolais vintage.
Spicy, floral, and musky perfume just bowled me over. Rich, suave, and more dark-fruited than I think I've ever seen in Beaujolais. Truly sui generis gamay.

February Rotating Wine Dinner (Mon Ami Gabi - Chicago, IL): Opened 2 hours before dinner. Drank alongside the 2007 and 2008 Fleurie this was remarkably darker and denser. Intensely rich (for a Beaujolais) and structured I think that this may develop into something nice in another 10-15 years. Just a complete brute at this point.

I served this in my wine course. This is my kind of wine. Typical wild wine smells. High pitched nose with dark cherry, raspberry, orange. Light mouth feel, long finish with acidity and continued black cherry Shows best at 55F. I've had a lot of great Fleurie, and this ranks at the very top among the ones I've had.

More saturated than your usual Gamay. Mulled red fruit and herb. Wonderful combination of sappiness, earth, and the typical tart acidity. Complex and long. No problem with overripeness or heaviness in this bottle. Excellent with loads in reserve.

Yum. At first extremely primary, fairly sweet blackberry and raspberry fruit, supported by gentle herbal notes. With air the fruit gets darker and a touch licoricey and the wine gets meatier and tarry and slightly reductive but significantly more complex, until it almost resembles Barolo aromatically. Texturally though it's nothing like Barolo, as it shows the best side of carbonic with serious flavor intensity over airy, silky tannins. Perhaps not the most typical Beaujolais, but delicious now but should continue to age well.

92 pts

Deep ruby center. Black cherry, herbs and green flowers. Rich entry, red and blue fruit that is ripe but not sweet, then transitions to a tart, acidic finish that is full of terroir. Over the past 3 years, this has become much more defined and lost its initial sense of heaviness. Performing beautifully, already complex, and poised for further development.

Silky texture. Violets and a touch of funk on the nose. Has that low sulfur wine fruit juice appeal - like drinking the best cranberry juice you ever had. Foillard's Morgons are more structured than this so it probably doesn't have the longevity as those, but drinking beautifully right now.

Rich and concentrated for a Fleurie, but the dark fruit profile is nicely complemented by notes of minerality, earth and herbs that add layers of complexity to the wine. Oustanding. Wish I had bought a lot more of this.

Consumed over 24 hours - last glass was the best. This was a ripe and concentrated Fleurie, expressing the vintage. Lots of cherry, with plum, black berry, some wet earth and savoury, sappy flavours. There is some minerality but the acidity is perhaps on the low side. More masculine than previous vintages I've tried and not as pretty. At this stage, I prefer the floral transparency and elegance of the 2007. Despite the lower than usual acid, this appears to be one for the long haul.

Rich, black-fruited Fleurie, with much deeper concentration than any Foillard I've had. However, this lush rendition still manages to carry some of the trademark elegance of Foillard, and amid the powerful fruit, there's funky, forestal aromas and flavors to keep it interesting.

2009 Fleurie Vielles Vignes: Blackish red. In the nose, it's powerful and very expressive: elderberry, Cassis, black cherry, very dense, meaty, yet totally transparent. There are notes of pine needles, too. Lovely. On the palate, this has tons of nuances and lots to discover. There are high and low notes that are being played, it's very fine and elegant with a nice plummy mouthfeel. Wonderful finish that is just a bit tart.

Je n'ai pas jusqu'à ce soir apprécié à sa juste mesure le Fleurie de Foillard, à cause de son prix, trouvant ses Morgon meilleurs et moins chers. Or, celui-ci m'a scié! Magnifique. 93-94 pts

Very vinous aromas on the nose combined with some raspberry and wet leaves, but overall it left me wanting more. Where's the meaty Foillard character or the layers of florals and fruit. This seemed rather simplistic albeit hedonistic. With only one bottle left, I'm going to tuck it away for a while and see if the 2009 character in Fleurie emerges with some time.

Cru Beaujolais (SF Wine Trading Company): Quite dark. Lush and creamy. Dense and powerful fruit complicated by herbs and fennel. Clean, long finish with some graphite. Definitely one for the future, but a wine that skirts with heaviness. I think it will be interesting to sit on a few bottles to see how they develop, but honestly, if you are looking for a more lively example of the vintage (at half the price!), I'd seek out the regular Georges Descombes Morgon bottling.

Dark purple. Medium body. Good acidity and moderate tannins. Has a nice smoky earthiness. Dark fruit. Concentrated. Drinking nicely now, but has a few more years left.

Dark berry fruit, quite concentrated and plush for Beaujolais, with a mild spicy pepper quality. Rather short finish given the palate. Good not great.
