Not bad for a cheapie. Tannins fully resolved but the acid is still there. Bit of alcohol heat. Still some dark fruit, cloves and other spices along with some leather. Decent length. Drink up!

I'm tempted to say this is declining. Stored in a wine cellar since purchase in 2010, the cork was in great shape. But the wine was showing signs of oxidation and strong prune notes. With a few hours of air it did improve, and the second night was ok, but the prunes were never too far away.

Another bottle showing quite a bit of age. Dark and ripe but not great balance. Not great progression from the last bottle. Basically not worth the aging process. Hoping my other recently discovered 2001 and 2004 Penfolds are as aweseome as I remember....
The wine looks inky colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like petrol. It tastes like meaty. The body is full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.
Last bottle I had was a little over two years ago and it was in a nice place. Now it's over the hill, sappy with roasted fruit aromas and flavors hitting the forefront.
Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.
Decent Aussie red blend. Nothing remarkable, but good drinking. Last time I gave it a 88. The difference reflects (in part) my attempt to use the scale more appropriately.
Fantastic QPR here. Still quite primary with plenty of tannin and acid to nicely balance out what is still quite primary fruit. I expect this to improve still over the next three to five years.
I need to join the positive chorus about this bottle. Very tasty, clearly a cab/shiraz blend that catches the high points of both. Penfolds make great wines for the money. Sometimes, they make me wonder why I spend so (and sooo) much more for wine. Just not that smart I guess. Don't know if any further aging will help. Probably will not hurt.
Nice nose, lots of berries. Jammy, firm mid palate nice structure. finish with enough spice to last long enough. Very smooth and well made. Time to drink up but should be able to hold it for another 2-3 years at least.

I opened this next to a regular '06 Koonunga Hill bottling to compare the two. On the first night the regular bottling (at 13.5% abv) was disjointed, hot, showing lots of fruit -- a real alcoholic mess. I would give it an 84 at best. The '76 bottling (at 14.5% abv) was smooth, showing muted fruit, with leather and cedar, and was very good, around an 88. But on night #2, the regular bottling had smoothed out and resembled the '76 on night #1. However, the '76 was even better, maybe 89. On night #3, the regular was again 24 hours behind the '76 bottling, but the '76 was outstanding, with the fruit showing itself through the smooth wood and earth, around 90-91. So, on any given night, I prefered the '76 bottling, but the regular just needed 24 hours of slow-ox to get it to a pretty similar point. But given that I paid only $2 more for the '76, that would be my clear preference.

This was interesting. violet with a hint of brick on the rim. A little out of balance with some heat and acidity that blew off after a bit. It's all you expect from Aussie sher-azz. Pepper, black fruit but showing maturity with a little leather. Throwing off lots of sediment. It was fun.

On first opening the nose has character of dusty floral perfume, brambles and dark fruit. The palate is also showing dark fruit with a tart cedar toned finish.
One hour later the nose is developing some barnyard funk, clove, all spice and dark fruit. The palate is similar with a tart sandal wood finish.
One day later the nose is showing dark fruit, light pepper and sandal wood. The palate is dark fruit, tobacco, sandal wood, olives and pepper especially on the finish with a bit of clove and menthol on the finish as well.

Perfectly ordinary Australian grapetastico. Lots of black fruit. Pleasant enough. Softly tannic. I'm not sure there's a whole lot of structure to speak of, but I suppose it's got more bones to it than other Aussies in its class.

Slow O'd for a day. Still, an almost fully opaque cloak of dark ruby, average legs and no sediment. Primary black fruit bouquet with a touch of mature oxidation creeping in. Medium bodied, lively acidity, and the tannins are holding their presence. Fruit fading a little, but overall it's still so smooth and nicely balanced. Great everyday bottle to remind me how good a $10 wine can be. And out of the six I purchased, there was that one I drank in Janurary that just seemed to soar out of it's league, supporting the old adage that there are only good bottles, not good wines 5+10+15+7 = 87

Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. A supposed recreation of Penfold’s legendary 1976 vintage employing reserved grapes that don’t typically enter the Koonunga Hill label. Dark ruby color. Blackberry and pepper aromas. Medium-bodied palate, again blackberry and pepper flavors dominate. Medium length finish. Somewhat one-dimensional overall. A bit disappointing – this one definitely falls a bit short of the Garagiste buildup though it’s still perfectly fine for everyday drinking.

Well - I had high hopes about this one based on the notes, but in the end this as typical $10 aussie shiraz as there is out there and not a particularly good one. I let it breathe for 4 hours or so in the bottle while the stew was cooked. Nice, expressive nose, but that was about everything I liked. Jammy, lots of heat on the palate. A little bit of cough syrup taste. Completely overwhelmed the beef stew. Not my cup of tea. Better for cooking.

Made from 70% Shiraz and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon this blend includes a little something from Bin 28 and is partly aged in new American oak along with the usual second uses. The nose is earthy, savoury and dusty. It's drinking well now and shows extracted blackberry and blackcurrant on the palate. It finishes with a fresh acidity and well integrated tannins. A steal for 10 bucks!

This is not the regular 2006 Koonunga Hill, which got 91 points from The Wine Advocate, but rather a limited version produced to commemorate the first release of Koonunga Hill in 1976. This version was only available at the cellar doors at Magill and Nuriootpa, plus a few restaurants, and the tell tale difference are the words "Vintage 2006 Limited Release" in the top left corner. Good everyday wine, chocolate and a little bit of olive on the nose, chocolate and olives and currants and plums on the midpalate (just like they say) and a little bit of burnt toast too, medium finish. I found the tannins and acidity a little lacking though. Not a quaffer, you'll pause for a bit but not something you're going to find yourself endlessly sticking your nose in and savoring. I had the regular Koonunga Hill bottling in Emirates steerage class and it wasn't as good as this, but then again, we were at 37,000 feet. (Props to Emirates for buying recognizable wine).

Our last bottle was corked. This one was not. Kinda of what you might expect: bears a family resemblance to the regular cheapo Koonunga Hill, but is significantly more serious and has better structure. A bit more grapey than I like, but this is a very well made wine. Did not taste at all over the hill.

Very dark ruby, 95% saturated. Strong blackcurrant, pepper, and floral aroma. Large body, average acidity, and the tannins seem to be starting to wane into oblivion. Soft attack that leads into a slightly hollow palate. Some bitterness at the end. I think this may be sliding over the hill already and losing it's fruit concentration. I can't say whether to drink up or hold. These are day 2 notes and I may have left this open to air too long before tasting, hence a somewhat flat experience. I'll give another try in a few months 5+10+14+7 = 86

Dark inky purple color with plum, dark fruit and some hints of pepper on the nose and palate with a cedar tart dry finish, As the wine breaths and opens up there are stronger notes of pepper on the palate and finish along with overtones of vanilla and semi-sweet chocolate on the palate and finish.

Notes from day 2 open. Very dark crimson-ruby, 95% opaque. Powerful nose of lilac, blackcurrant, white pepper, a little earth. Palate is big and lush, with quite the tannic and acidic spine that PGM accurately describes as austere and lots to enjoy. Great balance as the alcohol is barely noticeable. Smooth complexion overall and an incredible value for $8.99 at Amazing Grapes. Get it while you can. (5+11+16+7) = 89

This was a surprisingly serious wine; you don't come away from a $12 bottle very often with both "austere" and "lots to enjoy" as descriptors. Does not taste like $12: a rich nose, cab-dominated aromas and flavors, with real structure. Cassis and black berry fruit, nice herbs... 90+? Not what I expected. The bottle seems to suggest that this is different than the normal Koonunga cab-shiraz, but I've not been able to verify it...
Edit: Did find out that it was a different wine, I just got lucky: it was sold as if it were the standard Koonunga Hill cab-shiraz.

Good but not ready. Give 2 more years at least.

Blackberry and dark cherries - Mid-palate a bit hollow and substantial bitterness on the finish - perhaps this will round out with more time?

Dark inky purple color with plum, dark fruit and some hints of pepper on the nose and palate with a cedar tart dry finish, As the wine breaths and opens up there are stronger notes of pepper on the palate and finish along with overtones of vanilla and semi-sweet chocolate on the palate and finish.

Dark and perfect balance of tannins to go with any slightly heavier meal.
