Garnet and brick with medium viscosity in the glass. Funky nose full of brett, moth ball, forest floor, yeast and cranberry. Medium body with flowery perfumed brett, plum, cranberry and yeast on the palate. Persistent green with Caesar salad on the back. Puckery tannin. Med-long finish. Quite unique.

Partial Terlato owed project. It comes from the Southern part of Brunello. The Merlot comes from slightly lower altitudes and younger as well. 20-30 year old vines that is.
Smells like dusty Sangiovese, in a really good way. Full bodied palate, lively, actually I really like it. 12 months in oak 50% of that new, 50% old and large. For $19.99 its not bad stuff at all.

Decanted and tasted over the course of an hour or so. Right out of the decanter, expressive nose of fig and blackberry jam with hints of red fruits, smoke, and sage spice. The palate starts out with juicy plums and blackberry before the intense leathery tannins kick in. Once the wine gets some air more red fruits develop on the nose- wild berries, cranberry and cherries with hints of chocolate; more oak vanilla and less smoke / spice. The palate opens up with more plums and some iron minerality with hints of bitter greens and oak vanilla. There is some unwelcome development, as the plums turn to prunes with more time in the decanter. The tannins remain thick and leathery giving a super dry finish. Acidity seems lower than usual for an Italian red, possibly due to the Merlot or the tannins (the tannins seem to provide most of the structure). At this point a serious decant is necessary or some meat and cheese to soften the tannins.
Style & Quality- B-. As IGT Toscana goes this is a solid value wine without trying to be a "Super Tuscan". The addition of the Merlot adds nice aromatic qualities but the prune juice aspect and super dry tannins are a tad off-putting for my tastes. Value- B+. $15 / bottle is a fair price. Overall: B.

A ruby wine with a light to medium body, the Mazzoni Toscana Rosso has a nose of spice and restrained cherry. Tart cherries and oak in the mouth, leading to a medium finish with oak and cherry.

Juicy, candied, Sweet Tart flavors. Surprisingly sweet for this mostly sangiovese blend (72 Sang/ 28 Merlot). Very easy modernish style
