Oak is still noticeable on the nose and the palate, while linear, has a more plush/ripe fruit profile initially and finishes with some red fruit tartness. Acidity was well defined and allowed it to pair nicely with some local Italian food delivery but for my palate, I think I'd prefer the simpler Barbera bottlings instead of reaching up in price for one of these if I had to do it all over again. This wine appeared to try to hit a higher level but didn't quite get there. 89 points if I had to put a # on it.

The ‘09 Vigna Vecchia unabashedly struts its warm vintage character with plum sauce up front, followed by baked cherries, rich brown spices, and sweet herbal tones. On the palate, I found velvety textures on a full-bodied frame, giving way to tart black cherry and depths of sweet exotic spices in a fleshy, flashy and extroverted expression. The finish was long and spicy with notes of black cherry that seemed to coat the senses, offset by hints of bitter herbs, minerals and tobacco. I can’t see the 2009 getting any better, and this was from Magnum, yet it is wonderfully enjoyable today.

2004 Vietti Barbera La Crena vs 2009 Barbera Scarrone V.V.: - Farbe: Beide Weine sehr konzentriert - Bouquet: Scarrone schön fruchtig, Brombeere, typisch Barbera; La Crena schon etwas feuchtes Leder aufgrund des Alters - Scarrone deutlich fruchtiger; La Crena schön rund, allerdings fehlt die Frucht. La Crena hat aber den Schmelz eines älteren Weins - Für mich ist der Scarrone heute klar der Sieger

A Visit To Vietti (Vietti, Castiglione Falletto): This has a dark and spicy bouquet that stands out in contrast to the earlier Barbera wines. The main fruit component seems to be blood oranges wrapped in the spice of molasses, nutmeg, and a touch of smoke as well as a bit of toasty pie crust. It's very smooth across the palate. Crisp cherries lead the way and great acidity shows itself fully in the middle. The acidity persists as a touch of sweetness appears on the cherries. This tart sweetness evolves suddenly, giving a celebratory feeling to the mid palate. The smoke from the nose is realized toward the finish and lingers long.

This is my second bottle of 09 Scarrone, tasting notes were consistent with previous bottle. Let me start by saying this juice is ridiculous! This is not a wine but an experience. Pop and pour revealed immediate power, the depth of color is incredibly impressive, dark garnet turning to ruby around the edges. The nose predicts astounding concentration of fruit, rich, but extremely youthful. The palate is gorgeous, completely mouthcoating, with highly concentrated cherries and subtle minerality. This is a seductive and luxurious mouthfeel, like velvet. The finish goes on for what seems like forever and before I know it my feet touch the ground and the bottle is gone. The finest Barbera I have ever tasted. My only grouch was the alcohol was abit rigid at this point, but I have no doubt it will integrate well with a few years of slumber.

Wirklich toller Barbera.
Keine Spur von Alter. Tolle Frucht. Aber auch abgemildert und schön eingebettet in einen durchweg runden Barbera. Toll!

Kelly and Kevin’s excellent adventure before WWS 2012; 11/4/2012-11/11/2012 (La Morra): From 85 year old vines, more round and subtle than the scarrone. Black fruits, spicy, licorice and mineral. The similar concentration as the scarrone but rounder, subtler and a bit more complex.
