  • Mittleres Goldgelb.

  • This in a fantastic place. My score may be conservative. Intoxicating bouquet of slate, smoke, petrol, honey, and pink grapefruit. Quite full and complex on the palate with the smoke and petrol at the forefront, complex honey notes in the middle, and a lingering finish of citrusy/grapefurit notes. The color is golden. The concentration of fruit is impressive, gives an impression of sweetness. This has changed substantially since the acidic baby it was, and should last and give pleasure for quite some time yet.. patience is required for those that only have a bottle or two left

  • Vacation wines; 6/27/2023-7/6/2023 (Hotel Sonne, Partschins, IT): Glass: Spiegelau Universal
Popped and poured, drunk over two days.
Clear, medium golden color. Beautiful complex, round and developing notes with lots of tropical fruit.
On the palate also very round, balanced and harmonious. No signs of the SF typical "Stinker". Developed with air and time, even better on day two. A bit more complex as the 2010 Morstein I had before and with more tension and energy. Beautiful wine with still some upscale potential. 94+

  • Medium gold, colour appears more developed than expected. Nose of apricot and honeysuckle, similar flavours on the palate interspersed with stones, medium-plus bodied and slightly viscous texture, elegant acid line.

  • Drunk over two hours, zalto universal. Not quite sure if it had a hint of cork, or if it was just the sponti notes that had been transformed into something slightly cardboardy. Great mouthfilling taste, plenty of acidity, ripe and greenish at the same time. It even seemed to have a particular textural feel (I seem to be obsessed by texture these days). Very impressive and at the same time easy to drink.

  • Cork was perfect, but the golden colour had me initially worried. No signs of premature oxidation though. Let it air for a couple of hours. A bold nose of citrus fruits, kerosene, and some honeysuckle. Full bodied on the palate. Not linear. Instead this cascades over the palate like a torrent covering every crevice with plenty of pithy citrus fruit, some tropical flavours, and minerals. Texture is slightly waxy. Hint of fruit sweetness. Excellent stuff.

  • A bright yellow colour. The nose has lemon, honey, pineapple, minerals and a slight kerosene note. The palate is rich but balanced with lively acidity, minerality and slight residual sweetness. Lovely.

  • The problem what to pnp after the first 3 bottles increases,
    Cathiard, Tondonia blanco, Hubacker,
again help is on the way from good old Germany!
If you want to outdo a Hubacker you need a jet of energy!
    Easily choosing the right one!
what a smell, the spontaneous fermentation notes of younger S-F bottles beamed away by time,
a fresh winter mountain stream emerges, mineral ultra limy nose,
the palate shy in the beginning, but what to testify after one hour aeration?
Could recall some memories from my military time, two starfighters starting with all that noise, tremble one watching them starting,
this one is the pure, clean energy play,
never tried to put one of your fingers in the socket?
and, this one with even more energy than the 2009 Felseneck recently,
a great ultra long finish, and the best of all, ultra young Riesling appearance, **(***), an easy 100 for tonight imho!

Let me explain in some sentences why an 100 for me tonight?
Riesling for me is the best grape respectively for Whites, just IMHO,
and there are only some vine yards that come close to the leader of the pack,
KPK in my view is the most searched for producer for dry Riesling in Europe, here on ct I could recall that asian and american users are not really familiar with him,
in my view Rheinhessen do not have most of the best vine yards, a top producer could fill a really great Riesling, but there are better vineyards elsewhere,
first of all the MOSEl, but I do really prefer them for the classic Riesling style,
so there is Rheingau, Franken; Pfalz and Nahe
Rheingau really is not for me, too often voluptuous bottles drunk,
Franken yes too with pronounced mineral showing but I like them best for their Sylvaner GG s,
Pfalz, great vine yards, the Saumagen, Ungeheuer, Pechstein, Weilberg and so on, a mixture of fruit and mineral style,
finally the NAhe, for me the real play for mineral, ultradry, electric Riesling,
best vineyard without doubt Hermannshöhle, looking into the records of the tax files from Prussia! ;-)
and there are many others, Halenberg, Felsenberg, Krötenpfuhl, Bastei, Pittermännchen, Dellchen and so on,
but there is this small village some 10 Km abroad the Nahe, Bockenau, the father of the present chief from S-F bought most hectars of the Felseneck and Stromberg, evolved the treatment of the grapes, the owner now, Tim Fröhlich, a Riesling visionary,
my top producer for dry GG Riesling is Schäfer-Fröhlich without any doubt! AMEN!

Last fifth of this bottle today, 96 hours later:
very creamy, chalky predominantly now, no oxidation aromas, none!
Creamy limy flow with enormous persistence still!
    What a WOW bottle!

  • Nahe night at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): #23-11, 13% abv. I liked this more than the 2011 Dönnhoff served alongside. First off, there is a hit of Haribo pineapple gummi bears on the nose here, which I generally tend to attribute to sponti (I get it a lot in Willi Schaefer's wines too). The fruit here is a little sweeter and riper, and I suspect there might have even been a hint of botrytis in this. Spicy and delicious, but still lacking the broad texture that I prefer in my GGs.

  • Really excellent, long and fruity yet dry. I will wait a while before drinking other bottles, and feel like I could have decanted it? Looking forward to seeing how this will develop over time - definitely a long life ahead!

  • From 75cl, short but evidently effective cork. Opened but not decanted 1 hour, did not move much over the subsequent 90 minutes. This extraordinary, effortless GG is not just the finest Riesling trocken, but also the best white wine I can remember tasting since a perfect bottle of Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet 1997 quite some years ago. Tropical fruit, smoke, incense and saline; fabulous knife-edge balance of ripe acidity and super-concentrated fruit; light-footed texture with intense stony minerality. Truly phenomenal balance and roomy, architectural structure. Great wine, perfect early maturity, time in hand. Sorry acquacongas (CT TN 08.04.2021), this is stylistically about as far from any "Bürklin-Wolf from Pfalz" I have ever tasted as Margaux is from Pomerol... 95-96P

  • not blind, decanted for half an hour
I had it tighter in memory. In the finish a bit too sweet. Good acidity structure. Not over his top but close to it. Primary notes are still present. Very creamy. Could be something like Bürklin-Wolf from Pfalz. 92-93

  • Dinner at Bar-a-Thym (Bar-a-Thym): Drinking very nicely at just over a decade of age, I really liked this. The nose actually smelt rather sweet, with notes of honey and beeswax, some stone fruited tones, and a litter of white flowers and chamomile, all laced together with a little line of stony mineral aromas. Nice. The palate was very good indeed. Deep, powerful, round, yet perfectly balanced and wonderfully cut and defined - this had a sense of fit like a well-tailored power suit I thought. The attack was rich and plump, with seemingly sweet notes of stone fruit and honey sweeping into a tighter, powerfully mineral midpalate, and then into a full, deep finish traced with a really nice seam of chalk and mineral pulling away into the far distance. Excellent stuff; so very nicely balanced and superbly integrated, yet so quaffable yummy and food-friendly enough that it almost had a blink-and-you-miss-it quality. Lovely stuff, especially good with a crab-cake with Asian influenced flavours and a more buttery Turbot dish.

  • 10 years after Riesling tasting - 2010 (Restaurant Holz und Feuer, Kirchheim, Germany): *** brief impression from tasting event, no detailed tasting note ***
Glass: Gabriel Standard and Sophienwald Bordeaux
Bottle opened at noon, double decanted. Drunk about 8-10h later.
Clear, pale golden color. Lots of spontaneous fermentation notes on the palate. Good acidity and balance, a bit to sweet for my taste. Some ripe melon, still very young. I think, this wine is not yet at its peak and needs some more cellar age. 91-92+

  • blind
After Felseneck 2009 I got served this one. I guessed same vintage and Breuer's Schloßberg. For a 2010 a bit evolved, feels dry and focused. Great density and pureness. Long life ahead. No hurry to empty the bottles. 93-94

  • Not blind, side by side with the Felseneck 2011

  • Tasted on two consecutive days. Beautiful, complex nose. A lot of fruit, and herbs definitely Botrytis involved here. Nose stays stable over the two days, a little bit more open on the second.
Palate a little rough and broad on the first day. Very powerful, astonishingly low to almost non tasteable acidity. Opens up on the second day, gets a little bit more refined and precise. But still a powerhouse, not elegant and lacks acidity. Drink now!

  • Felseneck Vertical tasting of all vintages with Tim (Rocaille Düsseldorf): blind, Zalto universal glas
all 15 vintages of Schäfer-Fröhlich in 5 flights, all semi blind

I was wrong I guessed 2014. Lean and a bit closed. The acidity is well balanced and not too edgy. A really young wine and lives for another decade. 94+

  • Popped, poured, consumed over next two hours. Started off very spritzy. Within 30 minutes, it settled down and just kept improving in the glass revealing nuance after nuance along with a wonderful balance of dry fruit, citrus acidity, chalky saline mineralogy and oily glycerine. Wonderful dry Riesling.

  • 30min of air. Pale yellow. Deep nose, lemon, green apples, orange peel, touch of tropical, a sea breeze. Soft opening but evolve quickly high pressure on the palate, long and pure, great balance all the way. Wow

  • The 2010 Felseneck GG was intense with mineral-infused lemon, rich yet stimulating, giving way to crushed stone, sea air and dusty sweet spice. On the palate, I found depths of powerful citrus, green melon and spice as minerals saturated and zesty acids cleansed the senses. The finish was long and promising many years of further development, so intense, with lasting yellow citrus and coating minerality.

  • Nahe^3: 10 vintages of Halenberg, Hermannshöhle and Felseneck + X (@Private location, Frankfurt): *** brief note from an extensive tasting ***
    Glass: Gabriel Gold
Tasted blind. Bottle opened about 2-4h before, double decanted before serving.
A bit unbalanced and nervous acidity. Wonderful tension and pressure, surprisingly round and soft with fine mineral notes and a good length. One of the few wines where I guess it is at its full peak. 92-93

  • Ed & family over: 94 - minerals, citrus, wet stone, great depth / complexity, medium round, ‘bigger’ than most Rieslings, yet fresh, crisp, spot on, strong long finish.

  • This has citrus and minerals and a great layered taste with more residual sugar than usual in a S-F GG. Highly attractive, good balance. Its slight bitterness went very well with a number of vegetable dishes.

On the second day the nose also shows a beautiful rich dimension of golden fruits. Great wine, probably the best S-F I have had.

  • Oh my, this a beautiful Riesling. There are floral and peach notes with a twinge of herbal grace notes in the nose. The palate has lime zest, but not in the forefront, more white peach and a strong minerality. The mouthfeel is unexpected, as it is almost creamy. The acidity is rather mild for a German Riesling. There also is noticeable residual sugar, though I am particularly sensitive to RS. If I were to taste this blind, I would guess that it was grand cru Alsatian Riesling. Given the level of acidity I would recommend drinking sooner rather than later

  • Decanted for about 2 hours, drank from Gabriel. Medium golden color, pretty open developing bouquet with lots of passion fruit, mango, quince, red apple, lemon tart, honey and some smokey saline minerality. On the palate quite balanced, but rather juicy and easy-drinking with low tannins, medium body and medium(-) acidity, long finish with some iodine minerality. I liked it very much, but for my personal taste it comes with too much residual sugar to show the real greatness of its terroir.

  • Wednesday afternoon casual at ES BK.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, brilliant yellow gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of yellow chrysanthemum flowers, honey, beeswax, saline and stones minerality, apricots. Developed.
On the palate, dry, piercing to the soul high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), medium+ body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with waves of flavours of salty saline wet stones minerality, crushed rocks, beeswax honey nectar, apricots, nectarines, ripe peaches, citrus lemon, hot oil. Long reverberating finish.
Outstanding quality. One of the best GG I have tried so far. Good to drink up now. Already so good. How much more complexity can further age provide?

Keine Eile. Ganz starkes Ding vom Tim. 95-96

  • The first nose and taste certainly have "wow factor". The impression is complex, rich, intense, and balanced, with quite a range of flavours from green lime to yellow tropical fruits. The problems occur on the finish, which is no way as long as expected, not really harmonious and slightly cardboardy (which might have to do with so2, acid reduction, and/or filtering?). Furthermore, it's a slow drinker and the last sip is less attractive than the first. Our last bottle, and we're fine with that.

  • Good, but the 2009 showed much better a couple of months ago...09 was more serious, mineral driven and firm. I suspect that 2010 GGs in general are showing a bit oddly right now, but perhaps there was some acid reduction. It's been suggested in Germany without pointing fingers.

  • Enjoyed @ Alinea's "in residence" dinner in Miami.

Stunning pairing with two dishes - a dry ice I steaming cauldron of "Moqueca"-inspired ceviche (best single dish of the night), and 3 composed bites including a "crab zeppole" skewered on a whole dry vanilla bean.

Gorgeous aromas of honeydew, pear, grapefruit, lychee, peony, and apricot; on the palate and paired with the intensely acidic ceviche brought out passion fruit, butterscotch, pistachio and verbena. Finish was a long lingering memory of flowers :)

  • Outstanding tropical fruit on the nose, perfectly balanced with crunchy minerality, citrus, honey and white flowers. Great.
Lovely weight on the palate. Still driven by the tropical fruit and the minerality, now also accompanied by perfectly balanced acidity. A bit heavier now, almost fat in the aftertaste. The focus in all parts is just amazing. Will probably develop for a very long time but if you like the fruit I suggest you drink it the coming year or so.

  • This is a total stunner. The medium-intense nose is a refreshing, icy mix of citrus and minerals. The medium-bodied palate is dry, but it is so concentrated and so ripe that there is an underlying opulent sweetness that makes this super appealing. As is typical with this bottling, this is a chiseled, acidic, mineral version of riesling that has everything in spades. It's fresh enough to be gulpable, bold enough to please the crowd, and deep and complex enough to satisfy wine geeks. An excellent showing and a buy for me every year.

  • Decanted for 3 hours. Surprisingly open for a 2010. Very intense both on the nose and on the palate. Very energetic, laser-like focus and very complex and broad on the palate with notes of grape fruit, flowers, honey, peaches and sea shells. Intense with impressive extract, balanced acidity, overall harmonious. 3rd day: more complex, spicier and smokier minerality, and greener on the palate, with more pronounced bitterness. We expected it to show better after a long airing, but on the first day it tasted great. Guess one should either drink now or wait like 4-5 years.

• I'm a little late in posting this note, which largely accords with DCWino's contemporaneous note. I opened this bottle at 11 pm the night before and the wine filled out considerable and added a great deal of nuance, as the wild yeasts integrated and the fruit notes came forward. Read DCWino note for further information. These wines, in their youth, definitely need air time. I walked in this vineyard in July 2010 when we had no idea how profound this vintage would become. Bravo Tim!

  • Mostly Baroli gathering at Bluegrass (Bluegrass restaurant, Baltimore): This is not unlike the 09 that Henry generously opened a few months back but more primary fruit driven. Primary, ripe, bubble gum, pear, lemon, grapefruit, white pepper, smoke and a hint of SB like spicy jalapeno. Unctuous oily palate, limestone and bright acidity. Apparently some residual sugar but hardly noticeable. The primary fruit gives a bit fuller and less dry impression than the 09. Lovely wine.

  • Dinner and MMA at Dr. Culang's: Gorgeous nose, and a layered, complex palate. Lemons. Minerals. Very precise. I think there is a very small bit of residual sugar despite the GG designation, which gives this a nice roundness. One of the better wines of the evening. This went fast.

  • Great stuff. A fragrance that suggests this may have come from rocks rather than grapes, and each sip of this wows with the fruit and mineral flavours showing incredible clarity and precision. There's powerful acidity beneath but it never feels particularly severe or austere, instead it conveys flavour with a sense of refreshment I rarely find in GGs.

  • Beautiful. Still has the tell tale wild yeast. Enjoyed this over about a 5 hour period last night. Initially, the top notes of the wild yeast, but increasingly a bouquet of sweet pink grapefruit, alternating with facets of tangerine and white peach, underlying minerality. Taut yet a concentration of fruits that belies the acidity of the vintage and the very low RS. Far more complex and intense thatn the bockenauer trocken. We walked in this vineyard in the summer of 2010 when the grapes were quite young, and Tim was kind enough to pour us a barrell sample of the 09 Felseneck which was all about wet stones and minerals. I must try the 09 very soon while the impression of the 10 is so fresh. These wines are going to provide great great pleasure for years to come (if they don't disapper too quickly)

  • What a gorgeous liquid, and a wine that puts Großes in GG. Pop and pour, but enjoyed on the second day. My my, I love the cherry skin perception on the nose that sneaks into the mouth a little. This wine is beautifully dry with a pretty bitterness that pulls through the mouth tart citrus and red fruit skins, beautiful minerality and an uncanny smoothness. Tim Schäfer-Frohlich has knocked it out of the park in 2010. I strongly recommend these wines.

  • A really slow starter. Two hours decanting on the first day made the spontaneous fermentation notes go away but left a rather muted and unremarkable wine. On the second day the qualities of the wine appeared only after two hours: Lots of green fresh notes and some peach and strong minerality; lively with excellent balance. I will leave the remaining bottle for a number of years.

  • VDP- winetasting, Hotel Jacob, Hamburg, Germany: What a nose, peaches, other stone fruits, like the others from the NAHE still too young, aromatic of shale, very long aftertaste, for me nearly as outstanding as the Hermannshöhle! lots of potential 93-95

  • Just an intoxicating nose of orange, green apple, lemon thyme, white flowers, and smoky minerals. Insane balance on the palate, with Meyer lemon, nectarine, pink grapefruit, riverstones, and petrol. Tons of extract - this is really rich for a GG bottling - but the acidity is rocking, leaving a simultaneously full and round, yet weightless, mouthfeel. Long stone fruit and mineral finish. It seems no one agrees on whether this vintage will age well or not - for me, it's so good now, why risk it? Always nice to have your WOTY towards the end.
