Red fruited nose with some earth and a bit of heat. Lots of acidity, iron and doesn't really have the weight to carry the acid. Still very young, pretty and pure. Not sure if this is asleep or just doesn't have the material to go.

This one is a puzzle. Seems closed and hard to approach, but certainly not tired - on the contrary. Some evolution on the nose, but with fruit and sève too. The structure seems rather firm for the weight of the wine; good length but dried fruit. Is this going down the hill or is it just in a dumb phase? The next day there is more evolution on the nose, the structure is bolt upright, but the sense that the wine will dry out remains. A bit Giroud-like (the pre-2002 style). Is there maybe a lot of bottle variation? Opinions seem to differ wildly. But to be honest I still have to taste a Potel wine that I find attractive and I have tried some big names. Maybe I have been very unlucky?

Loved this with its more country backwardish profile of leather, dirt and classical burgundian terroir. Delicious wine with just enough ripeness and stuffing as well as acidity to thrill.

IWFS AGM Dinner (Matsugawa, the Pines Club): Really excellent, and drinking at about peak. Quite a classic Bonnes Mares profile. Bits of fragrant cumin and sandlewood floated alongside meat, leather and stony mineral with plenty of damp earth and sous bois. Dark fruited cherries and cassis weaved its way through the more savoury notes. All this just flowed very naturally and seamlessly into the palate. Lowish acidity notwithstanding, it showed a lovely balance and just about perfect integration between masculine meaty notes, ripe dark cherries and spicy, minerally notes. Nice long finish too, with more leather, orange peel, spice and ripe cherries tailing off rather deliciously in the mouth. A real pleasure to drink on the night. Yummy.

La Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin (Vancouver) - Summer Luncheon 2013 (Vancouver, BC): Easily the best red of the lunch. Young but very approachable and drinking well as you might expect given the vintage. Darker pinot fruits with nice acidity. Excellent.

Broad and plump, but tightly tannic, sharply acidic, and austerely fruited. Fruit runs from apples to dry cherry skin.

Per Se - so the first red comes and, wait for it, underwhelming. Typical french wine. Earth and not much else.
