Decanted 6 hours. Nose shows dark, mysterious, dried fruit and tar. Palate opens with lovely pure cherry and damson plum fruit, classic tar and dried roses. A touch of spice and dry earth. Still a wall of powdery tannins, just starting to soften at the edges slightly. Elegant and classical in profile, with mouthwatering acid and plenty of nuance in both fruit and structure. Plenty of snap in the sweet-tart finish as well, with just a little heat as the glass warms to room temp.

Dark red - hint of brown rim. Berries and tar on the nose. In the early stage of the drinking window - its velvety at the start - gripping tannins starts at the middle and lasts for 5 seconds plus. Very good and ready to drink. My experience with warm vintages from Barbaresco is to better consume early than late.

Age-appropriate bricking, light-medium ruby; medium-plus aromatics with black cherry, savory tamari, umami notes; palate is medium bodied, high tannins but balanced by excellent remaining red cherry fruit, high alcohol (14.5%), but doesn’t show too much, excellent savory tamari component here too; solid medium-length finish. This is drinking well right now, and I’m glad I opened this bottle. No need to wait, but it should last a decade too. 91 Update: I'm not sure if it's the hour of air this wine got, or the fact that dinner is over, but this is showing more heat now. A small step down from my previous assessment, but I still think ready to try a youthful bottle if you want to. 90

Dangerous admission - I like riper/richer vintages from Barbaresco. I like the fruit to overlay the tannins, making the wines pleasurable rather than painful. The 2007 Rio Sordo has a lovely overlay of cherry fruit that buffers the still strong tannins. It has weight to spare for further aging. There’s no risk of it drying out. At worst it will become an elegant dowager. At best it will retail a regal air, and also be engaging company for the entire evening. Right now it’s a leader in waiting, a little rough on the edges, but polished when it’s being watched. While nobody was looking I drank the whole bottle.
Give it a week in the fridge. Seriously. Completely luscious and floral upon opening, but really improves well with a looooong decant. Then it's the perfect Nebbiolo that you have always imagined.

The nose show dark, spicy red berry fruits followed by dried roses, hints of cinnamon and sweet herbs. On the palate, I found soft textures ushering in fleshy cherry fruits with zesty spice and acid, which added vibrancy as inner earth tones and sous bois evolved along with youthful tannin. The finish was medium in length, yet vibrant and pure with residual spice and grippy tannin. This is already so easy to like yet will likely improve over the coming ten years.

Dark ruby. Spicy perfumes. A very ripe seeming nose of red cherries, strawberries and some plums. More sweet fruit, than the savoury end of the aromatic spectrum. With time open, a touch of rose and road tar comes forward. Lush, generous, ripe fruit in the mouth. Plums, red cherries and chocolate. You could perhaps criticise the wine as a little too fruit forward and soft. However, with a few hours open, some savoury, umami, hoisin sauce and creosote notes emerge. The 14.5% alcohol on the label is a surprise, there is plenty of fruit to match. It's pretty accessible now, but would I'm sure cellar for many years.

Vinetasters: 2007 Produttori (Skokie, IL): Served single blind. #9711. There's an interesting touch of orange peel on the nose that I couldn't find in any other wine, but besides that, there's a richer fuller fruit profile here. Intriguingly, there's also a hint of spice here that differs from all the other wines. Clearly, this is a bit of an odd duck. This is slightly riper than the rest of the wines as well. My 6th, group's 1st.

From memory: Classic bouquet of ripe cherries, roses, marzipan and varnish. Nicely integrated oak – no doubting the varietal here. Starts off a little lean, but gains plenty of weight throughout the evening. Just entering its drinking window. Brilliant stuff!

Day later from memory. Served blind in poor light, opened no more than 15 minutes before serving. Color seemed dark ruby, nose muted initially. Lots of swirling and tasting to reveal deep red fruits on nose and in flavors, feeling very primary, lovely texture, then a wash of grippy tannins and wood impressions on the finish. Initially quite unsure. Checked color again and released it was lighter than initially thought, suggesting possibly nebbiolo or pinot, but those tannins-no way. Eventually coaxed some rose and sweet anise out, and guessed 2010 Barbaresco, so not my best or worst-should have said Riserva. What was most impressive here was the youthful demeanor, which over an hour never seemed to falter. Tons of fruit and tons of tannin, long life ahead.
As per my usual practice, I read no notes before posting my own. The community seems less enthusiastic about this wine than I am. It seems in many cases like they were drinking a different wine. I dunno, maybe I could have found a certain rusticity if I wanted to criticize it, but I think it hung on the edge of ripeness in a most appealing way without at all being overdone, and it certainly wasn't thin. Whatevs.

Bright garnet. Chocolate, plums, cherries, tea leaves and barely overripe strawberries. The palate is quite sleek with rosehips dominating, nicely caressing tannins and a hint of finishing heat. To sum up, this is a little hollow and disjointed now, and I'm not sure if it has the backbone to last. Pleasant and competent, though, with nice typicity.

2007 Produttori Riserva (Langhe Osterio): This wine stands out across the riserva lineup and not in the most positive way. It has a very warm nose with lots of rustic spice. More of medium tannins with a shortish finish. "one of these things is not like the other" went through my head when it sat alongside the Muncagotta and the Paje.

Produttori Dinner (Osteria Langhe - Chicago, IL): My least favorite of the evening, and the only wine that lived up to my (grossly inaccurate) preconceived notion of this vintage. The fruit seemed really slick and glossy and the wine just didn't hold the alcohol in the elegant way that most of the other crus did. Again, time could certainly be the wine's ally, but not a very good showing.

The Chicago Science Club does 2007 Produttori (Chicago, IL): Perhaps the black sheep of the stable, this is the cru that stands alone. Very dark with plums and blackberries on the nose. This was perhaps the first bottle where I did find a little bit of heat in the wine. The midpalate and finish thins out a bit too.

CT Tasting Group (Eli's): Very pretty nose, crunchy red fruit with a spearmint/ leafy streak that emerges from the middle of the fruit. Tannins are powdery and this shows purer fruit on the palate than the Montestefano. My WOTN / Group WOTN.

TTWG Produttori Blind (Casa di Rosso): Very interesting, quite pronounced nose, very herbal. Silky mouthfeel, slightly green (pleasantly), fairly fine but very very plentiful tannin. This was the group's wine of the night, and the nose alone is worth it. Like the others tonight, this needs time, but may be approachable sooner than the others.

Followed over the course of 2 nights, the 2007 Rio Sordo is typical of the vintage for the Produttori, as it is substantially more open and lush than most versions I have tasted. Dark red fruit, flowers, a bit of meat and fairly ripe tannins in this one. It's not as large scaled as the '07 Rabaja or Montestefano that I have had in recent months, but it has more than enough stuffing for the medium term cellaring that it will need to soften just a little bit. I've said this before, but it's good to have a vintage of these Riservas that can be drunk in the next 5-10 years (and even now with some pleasure) rather than the long wait for the more classic, structured vintages. Excellent wine with some upside over the next decade.

Visited the store for the Barbaresco cooperative "Produttori Barbaresco" where they have been making wine the same way for 58 years. The wine is aged for 2 years in oak casks, 1 year in bottle. I tried this reserve - very nice!! In retrospect I should have bought some. Four out of five stars.

Nose: Surprisingly thin and quite floral. Spices, blueberries and ripen strawberries. Taste: Red berries and fresh acidity. Quite silky tannins. Finish: Medium finish driven by acidity. Pop and pour and followed over 6 hours. Maroon color and the wine looks a bit thin. Good nose of black fruits, some tar and black licorice, and dried flowers.
