Some more old(-ish) Bordeaux from Alan's collection: The fill was high shoulder; there was a lot of gunkiness on the cork which couldn't readily be wiped off. On opening, even with a Durand and great care the last 4-5mm of the cork detached itself but I managed to extract it cleanly without dropping it into the bottle. The cork was soaked through.
10 minutes after opening this was good to go. There was a nice perfumed nose of red fruits with some sort of floral/herbal note added, perhaps violets? The colour was slight brick red but still with some depth. On the palate a delicate, almost ethereal flavour of light red fruit and no off notes. The finish was very short.
As with the previous bottle, after a couple of hours open the fruit was fading and the wine became rather thin.
For me this second bottle in the space of a few weeks confirmed that this vintage is well over the hill, but is descending gracefully down the other side.

Some old(-ish) Bordeaux from Alan's collection: We decided to open this first in a mini-tasting of fairly random aged Bordeaux as potentially the best bottle. The fill was top of shoulder, but on removing the capsule we found a cork covered in flaky black stuff (mould perhaps). Fortunately I had a Durand which removed the cork very cleanly. The mold only extended a few millimetres from the top, and the last few millimetres were soaked with wine, but in between, whilst a bit old and crumbly, was clean.
Immediately there was nice red fruit and notes of tobacco on the nose, which felt fresh still. This was borne out on the palate where there was an initial acidic nip, but otherwise a very smooth, delicate feel, which followed the nose and with negligible tannins. Some complexity of flavour could be teased out, but overall I couldn't escape a feeling of thinness. The finish was short and clean, again with a little bite and cigar box.
(We were tasting this alongside some straightforward bruschetta)
We left the last third of the bottle and came back to it about 2.5 hours later with cheese after dinner. Now a significant amount of tannin had come to the fore, to the extent that it dominated the now fading fruit. The message from this was that it should be drunk soon after opening to be at its best.

From a 73 cl bottle that was opened the day before. No mention of alc% in the label.
Translucent dark orange-mahogany color with a dull yellow rim. Old, tertiary nose with aromas of sweet pruney fruit and plum compote, roasted meat, some pencil shavings, a little bit of earth, light cooked bell pepper tones, a hint of onion and a touch of soy sauce. The wine is silky and medium-bodied on the palate with old and very tertiary flavors of meaty umami, plum compote, pruney dark fruit, some rotting onion, a little bit of raisin and a pungent, salty hint of soy sauce. The structure relies more on the rather tough tannins than on the medium acidity. The finish is dry, old and very tertiary with flavors of meat, soy sauce, some rotting onion and a hint of raisin. The tannins make the wine end on a quite grippy note.
It's hard to say whether the wine was alive when the bottle was opened, but now, a day later, the wine certainly wasn't. Too tertiary to be enjoyable with lots of old-wine off-flavors. Past its peak.

Finally got around to posting... Light brick orange color and super soft cork. So soft that the cork just disintegrated and fell into the bottle. We decanted through a fine filter and gave it a try after a few minutes. There was no sign of musty taint or vinegar smells, so I gave it a go. Both the nose and palate were so completely dominated by nutty sherry notes that any other nuance was hidden, or had completely faded long ago. Way past prime, but a fun learning experience for all who had courage enough to try a 43 year old bottle.

Wow! 3rd of three bottles. First two were good, but on the decline. This one was rocking. A wonderful core of dark cherry and blueberry with leather earth and sweet spice. Fully resolved tannins and full smooth mouthfeel. A little short on the finish.

Clear bright deep garnet color. Medium-strong nose of dried cherries, forest floor, mushroom, leather, oak with a hint of pine oil or turpentine. On the palate - initially rather flat, but developed nicely with exposure to air, especially after about an hour - dried cherries, mushroom, lemon and oak with a moderate sweet note. Fully resolved tannins, full smooth mouthfeel, moderate acidity, moderate alcohol, very balanced and elegant, medium complexity, medium finish. This was a very enjoyable, well-made wine on the decline. Drink now.

A fun, rewarding experiment with this 39 year old wine. Very light brick red when opened and deepened to a dark ruby color and bricking with air. Nose had some sweat and funk which lessened over time to yield some dill and green pepper in a fresh pleasant way. Smooth as silk with subtle leather, cherry, blood orange notes. A touch of acidity. No tannins. Short finish.

Old Bordeaux Dinner (Hong Kong Country Club, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): High shoulder fill. Bright transparent dark ruby jewel colour. Nose is much richer and plusher than the 1976 Pichon Baron drank alongside it. Some musk in a pleasant way. Palate is all smoothed out and with plummy tertiary character and started to seem flattened out and well past its prime but then some enjoyable belly-filling fruit emerged - like a Lynch Bages - and it became more secondary. Not as much power or length as you might expect.....actually, a rather tired but interesting bottle.

Garnet with lite viscosity in the glass. Nose of stewed plum, blueberry cobbler, dusty attic, mushroom and olive. Medium body with present red fruit, soft black fruit and earth on the palate. Secondary mint, wet tobacco and olive. Med-long finish. Not terribly complex, but still appealing as expected from aged Bordeaux.

5 Decades of Chateau Pichon Lalande, with Richard Brazier (Handford Wines, London): The colour shows its age. Still a healthy and vibrant wine with a beautifully mature nose with surprisingly a lot of fruit. Expected this to be more earthy. Mellow wine, mild and lack mid palate weight but give this is bordering to 40yrs old from the very hot 76 vintage it is to be expected. If nothing else this si among the better 76s we have come across. Zero rough edges, lasted very well in the glass (even after 2 hours since opening) and was just a joy to have. 93-94

This is an elegant mature wine still holding remarkably well in a challenging vintage. Decent clarity and depth of color considering the age. Dense brick-red core fading to light amber on the rims. This wine still exhibits some fragrant earthy aromas which as it opens up reveal layers of chocolate and spice. On the palate while the fruit is almost fully subdued there are still hints of currant, tobacco and then some more chocolate. The tannins are soft and fading but still there to be enjoyed. Fairly long and toasty finish. This is still a wonderful wine that is definitely nearing the end of its peak. Drink now.

A cloudy rusty ruby core with noticeable orange rim; quite a rusty nose too with some notes of sweet herbs. Sweet impression here; very soft and round on the palate. Nice flavour but not much complexity. Still enjoyable. Reasonable length and better balance than the Latour 1981.

Was a birth year wine purchased through K&L Auctions for my birthday. Label was soiled but bottle and cork were in good shape. This wine has held together well and improved/evolved throughout the 6+ hours of being opened. I wasn't blown away (the 89 Pichon Lalande blew me away), but I was very impressed how this held up. I recognize I was emotionally tied to the wine given it was my birthday, but I really enjoyed it

Still enjoyable with fair aromatics but definitely well past its peak.
Part of a 6 bottle vertical: 76, 82, 89, 90, 95, 98. No doubt a class above the other 5 bottles although 90 put on quite a show as well. Liked both these 2 vintages best. 89 had great aromatics but not as pleasing when drank. 76 was still enjoyable with some aromatics and very smooth palate. 95 still too young and powerful, need a long decant. 98 good aromatics but otherwise did not gave much.
