From 2 bottles at TdA, this wine had a light gold color and clear rims. The high intensity nose generated fresh apricot, citrus, petroleum jelly, and mineral notes.
In the mouth, this wine developed extremely well and was rich and ripe with huge length. It seemed to be bigger and richer than all the other high-power whites on the table!
When this wine has been stored well it is a great white that can power to awesome heights with air.

Nose of diesel, flowers, rich citrus peel. What a thing this wine was on the palate. So beautifully textured from midpalate. A savory and rich fruited profile that came in lifted and just went higher until it slowly dropped of with a really interesting herbal and savory finish. The acidity was bright, precise and so well balanced with the richness of the fruit. Simply gorgeous!

When I opened it at home I was confident this was a sterling example of this great vintage of Hune due to its expressive bouquet of waxy stone fruit and potent concentration of old Riesling fruit. Somehow though a couple hours later it seemed more diffuse and less distinctive. I am wondering if the rather humid and stuffy air suffocated it although two more potent red wines later on were fine. Judgment reserved.

Tasted blind, this wine had. medium deep yellow center and clear rims. The medium intensity nose generated petroleum jelly, white stone, apples, dried apricots, minerals, and honey notes.
In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with incredible balance and integration. It also had firm acidity and great length.
This bottle must have been in perfect condition as the wine was spectacular. While this was in the zone after a few hours in a decanter, it should last for at least a decade. That said, please note that I find some bottle variation with this wine.

18ct. golden color, starting to turn amber. Nose of honey and ripe pears On the palate it is very intense with, again, notes of honey, and a searing intensity; Some kerosene developing in the background, mouth-filling and with lots of stuff on the middle palate (which was missing with most wines tasted yesterday.) Fully ripe and close to perfection. went superbly well with the lobster served alongside since I could not find any adequate and suitably aged white Burgundy.

Full amber/gold-colored in the glass. There is an oxidative note on the nose like you might get from a mature white Burgundy. Dry, with ripe fruit on the palate - lengthy finish. This is a real treat on a Monday afternoon ;^)

Dark golden color, turning to amber. On the nose a whiff of honey and some fyrn. Wonderfully developed, mineral, harmonious with feel of "pebbles" on the tongue and good presence at the middle palate (Len Evans, are you listening in??)There is a sweetness to the wine that suggests some botrytis being present when it was harvested. Adds another layer to this multi-facetted wine. Fully ripe and close to perfection in a slightly austere way.. Went well with halibut, wilted spinach on a bed of rice.

Opened for our 32nd wedding anniversary, consumed with wild salmon and risotto. Old Golden color, long legs. On the nose honey, super ripe star anise, minerals and kerosene. It needed a while to open up, then showed good body and volume, a touch of sweetness/botrytis, minerality and firm acidic backbone. Compared to the last bottle this wine had lost some tension/ intensity. A bit disappointing.. Based on this bottle I would say that whatever remains should be drunk up in the next year or two.

Another Wine Slog Across France; 11/2/2019-11/13/2019 (Paris, Alsace, Burgundy, Encore Paris): Tasted next to 1990 Fréderic Émile. Deeper light gold color than that wine. More petrol, high toned, and classic stone fruit aromatics. Medium weight, more airy feel. There may be a tad of residual sugar in this wine, which gave it slightly better balance and harmony than its kindred Riesling. Just that much more complex and fine, and the acidity was better integrated. A great Clos Ste. Hune that is still steaming along as it reaches its 30th birthday. Wow.
After being in the fridge overnight, it is now the essence of Riesling. The fruit has persisted, and the petrol has intensified. There is a long, rocky finish. The acidity has also bounced up. Incredible vigor.

From a perfect bottle, this wine had a deep yellow center and clear rims. The high- intensity nose offered up lemon zest, pear, ripe apple, white stone, and just a touch of petroleum jelly.
In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with strong fine-grained acidity and stunning length. The intense ripeness was so well integrated into the acidity it was awesome.
This bottle was amazing. It seemed like it was just entering its drinking zone. It will last 10-20 years. It might even get better. Wow!

The 1990 vintage of Clos Ste. Hune has always been the highlight of this fascinating wine and this bottle was no exception. It’s difficult to explain why it is better, but it just has more of everything - concentration, intensity, exquisite balance despite its rather shy nose. The market seems to have realized this, as it now approaches $1K in price, far above other successful vintages, young or old.

Peach, apricot, marzipan. A little rubber, a little chlorine. Very ripe, overripe. A few swirls and there is good Riesling petrol hanging on. Very 1990 in terms of ripeness. Pineapple. Hard to place, dry or sweet. Have had fresher Clos St. Hunes.
Justifiably legendary. Epic concentration and energy here. Still fresh but showing secondary layers. Quivering long finish. Properly stored bottles have at least another 7-10 years at peak and beyond.

Dark yellow colour. Rich, powerful nose of butter, salted caramel, lemon curd, and pineapple, with hints of shallot and spring onion. The palate has a base note of dull oxidation, intermingling with bold flavours of pineapple, lemon, spring onion, sherry, and nuts.
I thought this tasted nothing like the bottle I tasted in 2013, whose flavours I found exceptionally pale and delicate, whereas this bottle showed big, bold, Chardonnay-like flavours. I think this bottle was significantly more oxidised, and this showed in the darker colour and on the palate (though I didn't detect any hint of oxidation on the nose).

Miscellaneous Wines from a France Trip-Burgundy, Alsace, and Paris; 4/20/2017-4/29/2017: Relatively light color. Fresh, laid back aromas of peach, herbs, and tea that continued to expand, and finally some petrol. Gorgeous texture with more breadth and glycerine than the '76 last night. Perhaps a touch of residual sugar? Clay and stone throughout, and the acidity arrives late. This is compelling and simply magnificent-an alltime classic that is only in its adolescence. I hadn't had it for 4 years and was thrilled to find this bottle.

Clos Ste Hune vertical 83-09 with Anne Trimbach. Historic vineyard of only 1,67 ha in the village of Hunawihr in central Alsace. Limestone soil, cool southeast position with morning sun.
"PROUD", favorite of Anne's father, the vintage he's most proud of. Made Trimbach mythical.
Massive wine, aromatic, waxy, tropical fruit, ready to drink. Amazing power for a wine that is 27 years. WOTN!

Ethereal wine. Tastes very close to dry with a faint hint of botrytis adding another dimension. Not in the least austere or light in what I perceive as the Trimbach style. This a a very well balanced full bodied wine. One of the best powerful Rieslings I have ever tasted.
For me, a perfectly mature and fabulous vintage of this wine. Tastes almost like a dry Sauternes with wonderful flavors of petrol, orange peal and grapefruit. A really waxy, oily texture but also quite stony and finely etched. The finish is extraordinarily complex with notes of minerals, honey and spice. Wow!

Impossibly fresh and lively at age 25, this CSH is by far the best dry Riesling I have ever tasted and it seems ageless. Very, very complex, elusive and intriguing, it demands attention. Perhaps some melon, more yellow than green. Minimal petrol to my palate and not much minerality yet helped by just enough acidity so it is not flabby or tiring in the least. A perfect match for the seafood at Nobu where the wine and food enhance each other in a way that we all wish for but rarely happens.

Labour Weekend at Pokai Parera (Ekatahuna, New Zealand): Perfect nose of aged riesling - green melon, bees wax, smoke and minerals. The texture of this wine is out of this world. Fat and opulent (14.5%, 4g/L), this is beautiful and poised. It is, perhaps a bit warm but as a complex beverage that is simply incredible with food, this is a marvel that will age for decades.

Fabulous old Riesling. Light gold honey color. Deeply flavorful and richly textured. Fragrance and flavors of fallen apple, butternut squash and pear. Endlessly complex, fascinating at age 25, lively, minimal petrol. Just the right amount of acidity. A great accompaniment to spiced grilled chicken and sweet potato purée.

A deep colour. This is intense and rich, with concentrated lime and apricot fruit, and good length. A fine expression of Riesling, and fully mature. There is perhaps a hint of oxidation to this, but if anything it adds to the character of the wine.

Trimbach Clos Ste. Hune & Cuvee Frederic Emile Vertical with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): The colour points to a younger wine and generally does not feel 24years old. Very mineral and layered wine with a shy nose. Very well structured, just perfectly polished acidity carries the wine and is a testament to great Rieslings. Rich undertone of fruit provides the fireworks and a pretty long finish. Maybe not as spectacular as the 99 but still a beautiful wine. 93-94

Best Clos St Hune I have had. Very round and honeyed. Still showing strong acid for a clean finish which lingers for 60+ seconds, with almost a crystalline feel from the mid-palate on. I wish I had more as I think this is at peak and will probably stay there for years.

nose of polyurethane, petrol and minerals. Surprisingly fresh and not oxidized at all. Very nice acidity balance. Nose wasn't as big and powerful as I expected, but this was very elegant with a long and lovely finish. The 14% alcohol was hardly noticeable.

Special Friend in Town (Sons and Daughters, San Francisco): Deep yellow. Classic stone fruit pit, fusel and an almost distilled, grappa like aspect. Deep and dense, unbelievable dry extract giving this dry wine a deceptive sense of upfront sweetness. A whirlwind of stone fruit, vanilla extract and perfect acidity. This lingered and coated the tongue for several minutes after I actually swallowed it. Better at the end of the bottle almost 3 hours later-how many 23 year old white wines can you say that about? My last bottle. While it could easily go another decade, pretty much perfection in Riesling now. Absolutely heroic wine.

Now I understand the fuss and accolades. This is superlative at age 23. Medium deep gold. Deep, deep, deep and powerful. It's tough to nail down but it's something like overripe peaches, honeycomb, orange and minerals. It resembles Chave Hermitage blanc. Viscous and massive. Terrific with grilled spiced chicken. No hint of fading.

Nose of candied lime and orange, then amaretto. Definite hints of Botrytis. I can't detect any petrol note. Smooth and quite alcoholic, with a hint of glycerin. Entry is tight and extremely dry, but blooms into a full-bodied mid-palate. There are flavours matching the nose, with perhaps a hint of dry seaweed emerging, but the flavours are pale and delicate; this wine is really more about texture than taste. It's remarkable in its lack of obvious faults; as dry and delicately-flavoured as it is, any development of objectionable flavours could quickly become obvious, and I suspect that would be the case for many bottles of this wine today. Any bottle that remains fault-free could last almost indefinitely.

Now I see why this wine gets so much praise. Fully mature yet very fresh and lively. Pinpoint precision yet great intensity. It's crystalline, mineral and aloof but I didn't miss the obvious fruit flavors I usually find in the Zind Humbrecht examples. Very complex and elusive. Words fail me.

I finally found an opportunity to open this bottle when both Greg and Barry were present (Nobu) since both had expressed an interest in it I do not recall tasting it before but my inventory shows three bottles already gone from the case I purchased on release. The color surprised me; it's a deep orange yellow like an aged Sauternes. A sample I left out in the open all day was far more expressive than the bottle at the restaurant, so it really should be given an apppropriate sunbath before drinking it. Very difficult to describe since it resembles no fruit, no nut, no tree and no other living thing. The balance is there and it's clearly intense. Still, it didn't blow me away so I am scoring it relatively conservatively for now but I clearly need to devote more attention to it next time.

Three Fantastic Dinners in DC; 10/26/2008-10/28/2008 (Washington, DC): Full yellow. What aromatic fireworks! Lemon drop followed by intense florality and petrol, and then, after several hours, candied citrus. Completely dry. Extraordinary layering, length, and complexity which gave the fantastic red wines of the evening a serious run for the money. Its freshness and drive were astounding, as it was still improving 3 hours after the initial pour. Magnificent, bordering on perfection, and the best of 3 or 4 bottles of this wine I've had over the years.

Light gold with green tinge. Incredible high toned "essence of petrol" combined with ripe white peach. Fresh fruit that is just surreal given its age, with wonderfully unctuous body and a core of lemon meringue acidity. Not a hint of oxidation. Glacial evolution since my last bottle that suggests 15 more years of life ahead. Glorious! If there were a Platonic ideal of classic, dry Riesling, this would have to be it. Great, great, great.

a beautiful wine! Very open and fragrant, with flint, petrol, nice fruit, white flowers, and some lemon in the nose. Some residual sugar here but really good acidity, especially after opening up.

Best bottle of Clos St. Hune I have had. Everything was perfect and intensified, from the gasoline nose to the intensity, depth and breadth of the flavor and mouthfeel. Makes me hunger for more older bottles

Wow!

Rich golden honey, light mustiness, clementine peel, wet river rocks. Hints of dalandan juice and guava. Balanced acidity on the finish, which worked well with pickled elements in a scallop dish.

2015 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2015-11/9/2015 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Very mineral driven nose displaying citrus and white fruit, white pepper, mint, cumin, spicy spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, unctuous yet quite precise and fresh palate due to strong presence of mineral and bright acidity and seamless long finish. Really impressive and perfectly delicious.

Deep golden color touching the amber stage.
Light kerosene nose, very mineral and taut; good balance
Touch of botrytis. Very masculine wine, much more so than the 1988 Haut Brion Blanc drunk two days ago.

nose of polyurethane, petrol and minerals.

On palate well balanced, mouth filling and ripe. Dry but not austere. A well made wine coming off a very good year.
This was a good bottle! Should hold another 2-4 years.

A deep yellow colour, with a hint of brown; deeply flavoured, dry, with apricots and lime in evidence. Unfortunately, the wine is starting to oxidise and is past its best. It is very long and complex, but is losing its freshness.

Alsacian rieling oras an outside chance, a very young Polish Hills or the like? Er, no! After it was revealed, kept a bit n my glass for an hour or so: opens up nicely but still needs years. Initial though blind, for drinking now was **1/2. Given pedigree, development in glass, its age etc, I'd say **(**), but really difficult to judge as I have no reference point for this wine. Still very youthfull though.
