Like the 08, very fresh and acidic, with sappy fruit and perhaps a more floral nose. The fruit is a blend of red cherry and redcurrant, very appealing but at this stage, just lacking a little charm compared to the 08.

There's a hint of brett, but otherwise good freshness and ripeness to the bright purple fruit. The tannins provide a lot of earthy grip, but structurally the tannins are bit out in front of the fruit, and I wonder if this has the concentration for further aging.

Simply beautiful nose of earth, red berries, gentle bell pepper and crushed stone. Similar flavors on the medium weight palate. The fruit is ripe, juicy but no exaggeration to its ripeness. Bright acid throughout giving energy and lift. Young vines limit the depth of the fruit but there is airy complexity and the length is good if not extraordinary. Balanced. As advertised, this is very Burgundian in style. Lovely expression of CF in a lighter weight expressive style. Enjoyable now but will keep. Bought on release.

Bought this ten years ago and wish I bought more. Big and dark, earthy/soil/dirt, minerals, blackberries, black currants, dried herbs, olives. We really enjoyed this, my franc loving buddy said it was the best wine he's had in awhile.

Consumed over three days. Very good cabernet with an edgier, more serious and complex character than the Amirault Grand Clos recently opened, while also less easy to drink and immediately appealing. Almost dumb on opening but continued developing through the last glass. With another half-dozen in reserve, I'd like to wait about two more years to open another - though I doubt I'll make it past one year.

Light purple with a clear aging brown to the rim. The nose is first dominated by sweet cherry/raspberry fruit. After a while minerals - crushed stone, gun powder and chalk - emerge, making it a quite complex aroma. Medium bodied attack, almost pinot-like fruit reminiscent of red berries in the mouth. Then the tannins and the acidity kicks in, leaving a somewhat drying feel on the finish. Still, the red berry fruit is what dominates the aftertaste. High acidity, very fresh. Long. This is really a wine for food, try roasted chicken. Will keep for many years and probably evolve positively over at least the next five years.

Classic Chinon. Capsicum, sous bois, black cherry, very open with excellent typicity. Fresh, even a bit tart, juicy, fresh herbs, full of energy. Tannins are mostly resolved, long finish.
Drink or hold. Very easy to drink at present, but should be capable of further development.

Ruby center with a more watery edge. Complex, complete aromas of graphite, olive, and light herbs. Medium weight, clay-based feel, perfect interplay of ripe blackberry, green herbs, excellent acidity, and a chocolate richness to the tannins. The best bottle of this yet, although it still has a lot more to say over the next 10 years. Just a glorious example of Loire Cabernet Franc.

Fine, even garnet color. Green herbs on the nose. Lighter body, olive and mineral core with some surrounding dark fruit for texture and flesh. Moderately tannic. Excellent maturing Cabernet Franc.

Fermented spontaneously, macerated for two weeks in cement tanks and oak vats, aged for 12 months in used (2-5 yo) oak barrels, followed by 9 months in cement tanks. 13% alcohol.
Luminous, very dark and only slightly translucent black cherry color. At first very green nose with aromas that remind me more of geosmin (tilled soil, raw beet) rather than the more herbaceous notes of Cab Franc. As the nose opens, it starts to exhibit aromas of leafy greenness, crunchy notes of blackcurrants and crowberries, some green bell pepper, a little bit of pencil shavings, light notes of dusty earth and a hint of leathery funk. The wine is dry, somewhat lean and medium-bodied yet not austere on the palate with flavors of fresh blackcurrants and crowberries, some leafy greenness, a little bit of tart red plum, light green, earthy notes of raw root vegetables, a hint of pencil shavings and a funky barnyard touch of brett. The overall feel is enjoyably structured with the high acidity and moderately grippy medium-plus tannins. The finish is long, dry and rather grippy with flavors of tart cranberries, leathery funk, some leafy greenness, light earthy green notes of tilled soil, a little bit of crunchy redcurrant and crowberry, a hint of green bell pepper and a touch of pouch tobacco.
Well this was an odd one. I tend to love the herbaceous qualities of Cabernet Franc, but this wine is tiptoeing the fine line between something that is aggressively green rather than enjoyably herbaceous. I wonder if there is a little bit of geosmin here, since I feel the greenness reminds me more of tilled earth and raw root vegetables rather than the leafy and bell peppery notes I associate with Cab Franc. However, the wine underneath is enjoyably fresh and focused with a wonderfully muscular, structure-driven core. A good and quite enjoyable Chinon, although I'd like it more if it was less earthy-green.

Waft of ripe yet fresh dark berry fruit on opening gave me the sense that I was in for a treat. Succulent (in a way I associate more with Burgundy than Chinon), lithe yet tender. Not particularly long, but ever so moreish and just so damn tasty....

Very good. Classic nose of green peppers olives and herbs. Light on the palate with good depth. Long finish with plenty of fine grain tannins, this is very young. On day 2 some barnyard comes out which made it even more pleasant. Killer value.

Aerated in the bottle for 4 hours. Deep ruby center, lighter edge. Penetrating, fragrant spearmint and olive. Light to medium weight, but pungent, powerful lean black fruit, acidity, herb, and stone. Tannic, dusty finish. This has barely budged since I tasted it out of barrel at the domain. Wow--25, 30 year wine?

Opened 1 1/2 hours in advance. Cherry aroma with a bit of green. Rich earthy cherry flavors up front, complex and mutable finish includes elements of tobacco, earth, red fruit.
Excellent, and just starting to hit its prime. Great QPR.

Perfect Chinon nose - dusty green pepper, just exceptional (if you like dusty green pepper.). Bright magenta wine, with no sign of aging. Gorgeous coloring. Light-bodied mouth feel belies a wine that is a superb balance of tannins and acid - while the tannins are drying the acid is flooding. Remarkable. Bright tart pie cherry. The bell pepper remains but is subtle. The acid carries a medium-long finish that clamps down, releases, softens and fades away. Exceptional wine.

No formal notes taken but what a surprising improvement over the last bottle I tried. I like one of the previous taster's descriptors of black olives, tea, moss etc. - quite accurate - but only after plenty of air. It comes across tight on opening and by no means like a 10 year wine. Vastly improved on airing and shows a more resolved character. A deep, dark forest wine....

PnP, consumed over two hours. Ready to go right out of the gate, but showed no signs of fading over the time it was open. Tart red berries, with nice tertiary notes--brine, black tea--balanced with acidity and a hint of tannins. Paired nicely with 70-day dry-aged Flannery steaks.

P&p; drinking pretty well right away. Aromas of dark-red fruit, olive, tobacco, black tea, and a touch of fresh green moss, with some nice depth; classic typicity in an elegant, refined package, just as one would expect from this wine. Plenty of acidity. Tannins are not fully integrated, but not a problem either, seeming to contribute just the right amount of structure. The fruit is redder on the palate than on the nose, sort of cranberry-cherry. Fresh, delicious, drinking well. Good stuff!

The first evening, I thought this was the first Chinon I've tasted that I could really love. It offered a kind of vaporizing acidity on entry and at the back end, sandwiching in-between a wafer-like pulse of sweet, red fruit, that cosseted the palate and contrasted delightfully. Nary a hint of green or woodiness, which is also new for me in these wines. You could catch a glimpse of what Rougeard does with the variety from this bottle.
The wine seemed to tire more quickly after the first day than I expected, so not sure what it's remaining longevity will be like. Will need to open another soon, or a 2009, to better gauge.

Decanted 2 hours plus. This is certainly fresh tasting but a bit tight and unyielding for my taste. Not sure if I should cut my losses and drink the last bottle or wait another 5 years and hope it will give a smoother palate experience...

Full of juicy red fruit on the nose. At the same time, it’s unmistakably old world. Unfortunately on the pallet it’s a bit of a mess. Screechy, acidic and with almost no fruit. Off bottle?

One of the finest young Chinon I have ever tasted. Piercing red fruit - tart cherry - yet with a body of black fruit and earthy dustiness. No flaws - everything’s in balance. Exceptional acidity, ultra-smooth fine tannins. Seriously impressive Chinon.
Pretty red and purple fruits with violet undertones, nice mid palate intensity, some stoniness, and ample, juicy acidity. Very nice texture and a fairly long finish. That said, there’s also a faint but noticeable bretty note. I generally don’t mind a hint of brett in Loire cf, but it seems out of place in a wine that otherwise eschews rusticity and aims for a degree of elegance.

Midweek with the GMs: White pepper, stalk, tomato leaf, toast and redcurrant. Palate is quite lithe, with a little spice around the edge. Moderate structure, just enough grip given the lightness of the fruit. Good length.

Liked but didn't love this - very pretty, but quite a step down from the '11 FDP we had the previous night. Lots of bright red fruit, green herbs and some pine needle notes with finesse and lively acidity on the palate, but not showing the depth of flavour I typically expect from Baudry.

Huge earthy elements on the nose, cigar box, tobacco, leather.... similar on the palate with a silky smooth light dark fruit and earthy tones, light/medium body, medium acid, not a lot of tannin on this.

The anti-fruit bomb. Big poopy nose and drains at first but hold off 10 minutes and this loses the stink and that Cab Franc peppery nose comes through. This costs 15 English pounds - for that you struggle to get a bland supermarket branded wine from corporate-whipped-famers for that price. This has terroir, nuance, age-ability, character and FLAVOUR. Who remembers that? Reject Fruit Bomb Embrace Nuance.

Big stinky nose on opening with a pronounced dose of barnyard & compost which blows off thankfully. I think this is still early on as evidenced by the dry grippy tannins which did smooth over more with air. There is lovely depth of color and a very present ferrous, bloody note which adds minerality to the under ripe blackberries and plums. There is still an animal note which lingers on palate after the wine has gone but certainly did not bother me as it feels in tune with the character of this excellent value Chinon.

This is tremendously aromatic in a very classic Chinon style. On the palate sleek and very high-toned fruit. In character this is somewhere between the graceful Franc de pied and the more burly Grezeaux. Great stuff, and should get only better over the next few years.

colour: dark purple-black nose: (surprisingly) quality heavy mature aromas of ripe dark fruits, lush, black pepper, green pepper, damp soil & heavy non-smoked tobacco, wet fallen leaves, subdued but very pure nose with a bit of animale in the background. palate: Med-full bodied, firm round tannins, high acidity level, wonderful harmony, plush velvet, rich dark fruits & other savoury flavours, herbal flavours, quality med-long finish.

Gives little on the nose. Very dark - tobacco and dusty - and just a faint hint of paprika and red fruit.
Juicy mouthfeel. Excellent acidity and gripping tannins. Plenty of sour red fruit, but there’s an «earthy» element here too. Perhaps a bit lacking in concentration, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Next one in about three years, I think.

Inviting aromas of tart cherry, herbs, and damp soil. Medium bodied with juicy dark cherries, savory soy, and elements of fallen leaves and pine. Nice acidity and earthen, grippy tannins characterize the finish. Good, but liked this a bit less than other 2010s. Perhaps this is starting to close down? Hold.

Sadly... and stupidly... my last of these. This bottle was just as good as the last - chalky black and red fruit of tremendous purity is supported by tobacco, green capsicum, soil, undergrowth and a slight black pepperiness. It's also a little smoky. There is wonderful detail on the nose and palate. The acidity is crisp, giving the wine good length and the tannins impart nice grip on the finish. One of those wines that has a roundness of tannin and fruit on the palate, but also offers laser like focus. Excellent stuff. Wish I had more.

Very soily nose. Palate shows very focused tannin and character. The mouthfeel is terrific being silky and lovely. A nice clean Loire red with those dirty type notes that make it fun. The second night reveals that while the fruit is ripe enough is seems to lack some concentration leaving the middle a bit hollow. The ample acidity but not really driving or giving this a solid core underneath the fruit. This is a solid Chinon for the medium to short term. It might benefit from a couple more years but I wouldn't want to lay this one down a long time. A lovely wine if you like the type.

Beautiful, pure, and classic nose, you can almost smell the lush texture. A richly but naturally concentrated wine with great balance, stony but certainly more fruit-driven than the Croix B. A hint of background funkiness does not distract. Smile inducing, delicious wine, with much density of fruit to unfurl over the next twenty years.

Enjoyed from a Schott Zwiesel Pure Burgundy glass. Compared to the '09 Croix Boisée, which was pretty open from the get-go, this took several days and lots of air to come around, as might be expected from the more classic/less ripe 2010 vintage. On day 3, this was really singing, showing classic cab franc aromas of bell pepper, leather, tobacco, game and cassis, accented by minerals, black pepper and licorice. Still a bit one-dimensional on the palate, this will require some patience. Abundant minerals, medium acids, and firm but supple tannins on the finish. Lots of potential here.
Notes from day 2. Dark red to purple in color. Nose of red cherry, green pepper skin, soil, pepper. Palate of red cherry, roasted pepper, with some tobacco going on and a little herb. The finish was above average in length. Overall this was a solid wine with nice acidity and structure. Will hold my last few bottles for a while. Hold or Drink: 50+5+12+17+7 4

Basketball, Beaujolais, and More! (Weygandt Wines - Washington, DC): Lifted aromas of spicy black cherry, peppered game, soil, and leather. The palate is wonderfully spicy, as red cherry, roasted green peppers, and black pepper meld with tobacco and sanguine game. The finish has excellent acidity, lending direction to mixed berries, game, and dried herbs. This is drinking well now, but will reward further with time in the cellar. Hold. R&M90

Really pure caressing fruit on the palate. I like this wine but I am still waiting on these young vines to speak to me. The Grezeaux bottling I had a couple of weeks ago from the same vintage displayed more depth and rustic charm. I would bury these in the cellar and drink in ten years when this will reveal more personality than the suaveness of its fruit

I read these vines were only planted in 2000 already they are offering a terrific wine, beautiful nose of blue and red fruit with a nice dash of some black olive. Magenta-ruby in colour. Impressive purity here - this really is terroir in a bottle. Juicy fresh cherries, red summer berries, tobacco and vegetal elements/undergrowth are framed in a taut, but very approachable, acid-based structure. Palate is minerally, yet plusher and rounder than Le Domaine and the dusty tannins add good grip to the moderately long finish. A lovely, young, "cru" Chinon that exemplifies purity and elegance - all expressed without artifice! Although young, this is approachable now with a decent airing - but promises much more in the next 10+ years.

A fantastic wine. Relatively young vines from chalky-limestone soil. While I love the gravel soil based Domaine and Grezeaux wines for their raw and unadulterated expressions of Loire Cab Franc, this approaches the grape from a completely different angle. Subdued but very pure nose with a bit of animale in the background. Elegant, almost silky fruit on the palate without a lot of the earthy, green tobacco notes that Cab Franc often displays. This doesn't have the huge structure and substance of the Croix Boissee bottling (although to be fair, I haven't tried the 2010 version yet). But it makes up for it in spades with its elegance and clarity. Very well balanced, I have no doubt that this will age well, but be sure to try one young as it is currently drinking quite well. I love how each of the cuvees in the Baudry range express themselves in completely different ways. Yet another slam dunk from the Baudrys.
Medium, consistent ruby. Peppery nose with oregano and green olive. Very lean and angular today (certainly not "lush", as I found it 2 months ago in France!). A fleeting glimpse of pure, ripe black fruit in the mid-palate, but then the acidity, herbal flavors, and puckery tannins kick in to provide a very dry finish. This has tightened and the fruit that was so evident in October is now hidden underneath its classic Chinon structure. Be patient; if nothing else, at least wait until it recovers from its long journey.

Weygandt Wine BYO (Weygandt Wines, Cleveland Park, Washington D.C.): If you take a whiff and don't peg this as Cabernet Franc, something is wrong. Textbook nose of young CF here with snapped peas, pepper, tobacco and red fruit. Super young wine that's rock hard (even with air) at this point. Great material is being used here, so I have no doubt that this will round into a very nice wine.

This is an earlier drinking wine that some of Baudry's other single vineyard wines. It's characterful, herbal and spicy.
The acidity seems unbalanced though to me, tart, something that Loire reds often seem to suffer, makes a ripe wine somehow seem less consequential.

Sadly... and stupidly... my last of these.
