Tertiary characteristics abound. Abundant amount of funk, spice, forest floor, mushroom. Mixing well with the soft cherry fruit. Finish was a bit light but otherwise very fun to explore.

Dinner at MingHin (Chicago, IL): I thought there was something akin to TCA here, but in hindsight I was probably wrong and it was just a little musty funk. This definitely has a mild stewy quality (probably as a result of the vintage), but it's not as overwhelming as some other 1997s. Fairly earthy, with a fading mix of red and black fruit. The tannins are still a little chewy here as well, but I think drinking this sooner than later is the best course of action.

Purchased on release dark ruby burg. Sweet boysenberry nose with balanced sweet, blueberry palate that speaks more to a great fruit bomb palate staining 97 with guts to go. Great 97!

Anne Gros 1996-1999 Clos Vougeot Vertical Dinner (S.K.Y. Restaurant - Chicago IL): In 96/97/98/99 vertical. Rich black cherry and berry aromas and flavors, all still nicely fresh for its age. Good depth and length, with corresponding good complexity, even if not quite at the level I'd want from Grand Cru. Still, very charming now.

Our Turn to Say Thanks to Some Generous Friends (Los Olivos, CA): Slow ox'ed for about four hours. Easily outperformed the vintage. Youthful and almost robust, with a rich nose of black fruits, stewed cherries and some mint. Ripe and spiced flavor profile, with some cranberry and herbs thrown in. Should develop further with time.
Updating my notes after sampling some remnants on the second day, the wine has gained substantial weight from the additional air time, displaying tremendous texture and a smokey viscosity, alongside deep blue and black fruit notes. Next time, we decant!

Some reduction on the nose mixed with jammy dark fruits on the palate. The wine was a tad overripe and lacked the balance of tannin and acid. Overall, a decent '97, but not a great wine and marginally enjoyable. The flaws of the vintage could not be overcome.

Casual (Mostly) Burg Dinner with Friends (Formento's - Chicago IL): Popped and poured, then consumed over two hours. Lots of mature and ripe red and black fruit. Good concentration, but slightly short of acidity gives it a short and almost-tired finish. Drink up.

Burgundy Revisited (Chez Shama): Really quite dense and fruity. A veneer of oak. Quite modern and glossy. Good for the vintage. ***1/2 maybe ***(*)

Big nose from the get go. Some secondary notes developing. Red and dark fruits. Good acidity and soft tannins. Very nice.
