Delicious. Plenty of DMS on the nose on PnP, which did oxidize over a few days. But on the first day it was so lovely, fully open and ready to drink, I’d say around the peak or slightly past peak. Beautiful tannin and body and texture. I prefered it over the ‘05.

Garnet, brownish edge, medium(-) intensity. Mature(-) nose of mature plums, black currant and roots. Dry, medium acidity, medium finely grained tannins, medium body. Austere, fresh maturity. Interwoven intense flavours, enveloped by old oak. Very, very good length. Bordeaux, yes, still a nice something additional. Follows over five days, day 5: Bouquet as above. A lot of dark fruit left. Powdery afterfeel. Concentration. So good. Best day?
Second wine to Ch. Haut-Brion (from 2007 named Le Clarence de Haut-Brion). Blend of mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon plus Cabernet Franc.

(Decanted for two hours) Deep red colour with lovely maturing nose showing violets, liquorice and some oak. Softening tannins on the palate showing starting to show some dried fruit and with a nice and smooth vanilla oak touch on the intense finish. This has evolved very well and is perfect with some extra time in the decanter to open up. (Best 2014-2029)

After 14 years this is starting to fade a bit. It has a lovely classic feeling to it, with fine red berries, hints of leather and tobacco. Medium bodied, with a nice blend of dark and red berries, leather, tar and tea.

A very Bordeaux typical and totally approachable effort, the 2004 Bahans-Haut Brion offers up subdued fruit, tons of crushed rock, stony minerals, clay, led pencil and Cigar box wood. This is so typical I am ashamed to say so - but it feels almost like a "designed" wine - perhaps a tad too one-dimensional given its pedigree. The palate adds to the overall experience with a freshness and rather forward acidity, though balance and integration are certainly the keywords here. Tannins linger on in the back-end, present but certainly not too vocal. The wine certainly drinks nicely tonight, but my guesstimate is it will cellar well for many years to come. A very nice acquaintance for sure!

I have rarely had two bottles of the same vintage from the same chateau tasting so differently. This second bottle was glorious. Palate enveloping cassis and a voluptuously long finish.. I thought I was drinking le grand vin. Outstanding!

Was disappointed by this wine. It tasted typically Pessac-Leognan. Had nice aromas of smokey blackcurrants, cassis, spice, veggies, mulberries, graphite and tar. Its medium bodied palate was elegant, longilinear, with nice weight, some layering, with not completely ripe fruit, graphite and tobacco. Ends longish, fresh and aromatic. Didn't have the expected pizzaz.

Pretty, rich, deep medium red. Raspberry cordial on the nose with black pepper. Some dust as well. This is a pure, uncomplicated wine showcasing red fruits that is absolutely delicious - a classic happy wine. It reminds me of a very nice burgundy in how pleasant it is to drink (if not in the flavor profile). Note that it really needed the hour we gave it to breathe. Drinking perfectly and showing no sign of decline.

Quite lovely, a bit tight nose. Dark fruit, gently oaky, cedar, gunsmoke, gravel. Harmonius, but not a power house. Medium-fullish body, good acidic drive. Slightly hard tannins that is slightly taking over the fruit. Integrated oak. Gravel smoke. Good Pessac character, but also a bit thin in fruit and a little bit short on the finish.

As the previous bottle that i took out of my cellar was corked, this wine was a bit cold at first and lacked nose. After some time in a decanter, the wine opened up. Typically Graves, graphite, liquorice, dark fruits, complex nose. Taste is warm and full with a finish of over 30 seconds.

A lovely nose of the terroir with smoke, dark red fruits and warm bricks. Fairly formidable given I often find this wine too light but this vintage has some nice heft to it with fine flavors of smoky earth, tobacco and graphite minerals. Smooth and silky with a nice finish. The tannins are somewhat green but this works and is ready now.

Big ripe nose of black fruit (blackberry, blueberry etc) spice and funk. On the palate it was ripe tasting like the new world but with a little funk of the old world. Really enjoyed this wine. To be critical, it's differing yet intense components could've been tied to together a little more harmoniously. Classic bordeaux. Not at all austere, you get the feeling this has a quite large portion of merlot. Needs some timt to open up, but then reveals notes of forrest-fruit, stable, and a touch of green herbs. Taste is dry, with tannins still quite evident, great acidity, bur perhaps a bit short. All the same, a good claret, would like to try in a more ripe vintage!

With liver and fall veg. 1.5 hour decant. On pop, shrill, vinegar and farmyard nose. After 5 minutes, the VA blew off, but the barnyard dominated. Concerns about brett taint. Initial taste though confirmed it had held well. After 1.5 hour decant, with dinner, Nose of light vanilla, kirsch, and light earthy notes plus a little pencil lead. In many ways, and classic, but not particularly fragrant bdx nose.
The palate shines. Focused mature fruit with a very cool feel in the mouth. Nothing about this wine is out of place. Mid-weight and not terribly long, but wonderfully focused with fine, light tannins. Not sure of the price (you have to love drinking from a friend's cellar), but certainly showing its class.

Really starting to come together now, beginning to show some classic aged Bordeaux signs. Tobacco leaf, cigar, black fruit, earthy, even a little dusty with some cassis as well and cedar all encased in a lovely perfume. The palate is not quite as rich as the nose, but the tannins are there but supple and dusty, the fruit comes in first then followed by some cedar and earthiness. Nice medium length finish, but fairly one dimensional. Overall I'm still very impressed by this wine.

Chateau Haut-Brion Seminar (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Darker ruby than '06. Currant, rich blueberries showing a well structured wine with solid tannin backbone. Palate is firm and shows good balance for a difficult vintage. Will last for 15-20 years with ease.

Sampled at Cambridge University Wine Society dinner which was hosted by Ch Haut Brion. The wine had been decanted for about 1-2 hours beforehand. Had a lovely dark ruby colour. A floral nose with plenty of red cherry fruit as well as some musky, earthy tones and a healthy dose of tobacco. On the palette it was not quite as rich as the nose but well integrated with supple but firm tannins and less obvious but still present red fruit. Overall I'm impressed as I think this wine will age very well, the tannins should soften out and it will be even more drinkable.

Very good the first night...bright floral nose and gobs of fruit with substantial--but not overpowering--tannins. The second night it seemed to drop everything but the acidity and the tannin...disappointing. While still relatively tasty the second night, this is definitely not a wine to leave for the next day.

13.5%. Deep purplish red. Rounded fruit forward nose of core plum with hints of oak, tobacco and earth. Easy drinking with a fairly good acidity. Tannins still edged out but should soften. Medium bodied. Went well with the oven roasted chicken stuffed with lemon. While not outstanding, this wine saved my night. :D I was told this second wine has been renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion in 2007.

Purple colour just beginning to soften. Stunning nose of tobacco, cedar and leather wrapped around a black cherry core.Initially I was a bit disappointed with the palate, seeming lacklustre and without body but this changed when tried with food. The fruit came through a lot stronger and the tannins were much better integrated. Perhaps another year or 2 in the cellar wouldn't go amiss.

Chateau Haut-Brion Seminar (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Darker ruby than '06. Currant, rich blueberries showing a well structured wine with solid tannin backbone.
Palate is firm and shows good balance for a difficult vintage.
Will last for 15-20 years with ease.

Lovely bright perfumed nose - plenty of dark fruit going on, with some oak and herbaceous notes as well. Very smooth on the palate, lovely rounded tannins. This is a well made wine and thoroughly enjoyable - though it still has plenty of aging left as well.

Sampled at Cambridge University Wine Society dinner which was hosted by Ch Haut Brion. The wine had been decanted for about 1-2 hours beforehand. Had a lovely dark ruby colour. A floral nose with plenty of red cherry fruit as well as some musky, earthy tones and a healthy dose of tobacco. On the palette it was not quite as rich as the nose but well integrated with supple but firm tannins and less obvious but still present red fruit. Overall I'm impressed as I think this wine will age very well, the tannins should soften out and it will be even more drinkable.

13.5%. Deep purplish red. Rounded fruit forward nose of core plum with hints of oak, tobacco and earth. Easy drinking with a fairly good acidity. Tannins still edged out but should soften. Medium bodied. Went well with the oven roasted chicken stuffed with lemon. While not outstanding, this wine saved my night. :D I was told this second wine has been renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion in 2007.

Purple colour just beginning to soften. Stunning nose of tobacco, cedar and leather wrapped around a black cherry core.Initially I was a bit disappointed with the palate, seeming lacklustre and without body but this changed when tried with food. The fruit came through a lot stronger and the tannins were much better integrated. Perhaps another year or 2 in the cellar wouldn't go amiss.
