White Alba truffle dinner at Park Place: Excellent Chablis. Like Bob said, I could also drink this all night. Brine and sea water aromas. Saline, good fruit concentration. Some lime. Drinking really well.
Drunk next to the 2013. This was significantly broader, riper, and more buttery. Obviously at peak (at least for me). Aromatically it was fresh, floral and with notes of white peaches. Despite the ripeness not heavy at all. As good as white Burgundy gets though blind tasters initially went for Puligny (not a rare thing with Raveneau wines).

At Kuki'o. Decanted for 30 minutes and then consumed over the next 2 hours. Citrus, sea brine, lemon and honey on the nose. This shows less of the 2004 lean and acidic character than prior bottles. Sweet fruit, silky and mouthwatering with just the right amount of acidity and chalkiness. Excellent.

#2 of 3. Decanted for an hour and paired with a 2004 Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet. Both bottles were in excellent shape, not a hint of Pox. The Chevy profiled like a GC Chablis, limestone, salinity, minerals and white flowers.
The Butteaux has solid acidity which balanced this surprisingly rich 2004. If we tasted this double blind I would expect most would call an 1’er Cru Mersault. Balanced with layers of yellow fruit, lovely texture, long finish .... a wonderful contrast to the Chevy.

First bottle of a mixed case of Raveneau 04s bought on release. Bought, along with a 2004 Leflaive Batard, to drink with friends Thursday night at the Acker Auction held at Le Bernardin Prive.
Light yellow color, tight clean bright nose, the initial palate showed crisp fruit, citrus notes with hints of sea salt. Texture and acidity provide an energetic frame which serve the wine well. A delicious bottle of wine. Given the embarrassment of riches at these events I moved on to taste other goodies and revisited this a few hours later and this bottle was hitting at a grand cru level.
As was true with a 2004 Rav Foret at a friends 40th dinner a few weeks ago, this bottle of Butteaux was youthful and still quite primary and drinking 10 years younger, wow I haven’t said that about a white burgundy since roughly 2004 and we said the same this about 1989s which were 15 years old.
Sadly the 04 Batard which should have been a baby at 15 years old started out well but after 45 mins showed oxidative notes which blemished a wine which used to be, in vintages prior to 1996, a consistent top performer.
Judging from my previous notes on this wine, it just keeps improving. Mushroomy yet fresh, buttery yet vibrant. Quite fat on the palate and flinty, which sent some people who were tasting this blind to Meursailt. One of the best white Burgs in recent memory.

More advanced than I'd have expected. This bottle (with a chipped cap exposing most of the cork) was fully mature, and quite wonderful. Toasted oats, honey and lemon. Good balance but I could have used more prominent acidity. A little lack of freshness kept this score down. Will try another bottle soon.

Tasted blind. Terrific wine, fully resolved oak. Buttery, hint of lemon and cantaloupe. Slight flint. Expansive on the palate, long and smooth. Many of us guessed it’s a Chassagne initally since it doesn’t have the mineral edge. But still, a great wine.

A private dinner (Restaurant Bak, Amsterdam, NL): A beautiful marriage of elegance and intensity, open for business, beautiful purity and definition, green apple and oyster shell, hints of salted butter and honey, aromatic green herbs, silky and creamy palate, totally seamless, playful and refined, precise but not in the least austere, long and complete finish. Grand Cru level easily, great wine, perfect bottle.

Beautiful seamless elegant food wine (paired with 1/2 the courses at Michelin three star Manresa) - a study in class with almost no signs of age for a 13 year old chardonnay. Crystal clear light gold color. Subdued nose that opened on warming / aeration to toasted pine nut, lemon chiffon pie, wet slate, white truffle, lime and vanilla creme. Seamless on the palate and ethereally light. Wow.

This was delicious but is still a baby. It exhibited lemon curd, saline, and a slight cheesy funkiness but overall was still quite reserved even though it was decanted for a few hours prior to serving. Very enjoyable to drink, but more bottle age would undoubtedly allow this to become more expressive.

A really odd smell to start and I though it might be flawed, however, this seemed to blow off. This was not present on bottle drunk a year ago. Somewhat shy on the nose. Typical aged Raveneau palate with some honey, beeswax and citrus.

Very different than this same one i tasted 18 months ago. It was smoother this time quite balanced if still pretty young. The previous was much sharper and acidity driven. I say wait 2 yrs. 90-92.

A Burgundy Night (San Francisco): Light yellow, not much deeper than the 2004 next to it, as if it had been locked in a time capsule. Tart citrus core, a whiff of sulfur, great salinity, and the hallmark Raveneau flesh surrounding this backbone of structure. Not a big wine but a paradigm of focus and intensity for its weight. Outstanding. Although this was my last bottle, I could see it easily going another 6 to 8 years. Is 2004 the last "real" Chablis vintage??

Had a glass at the NoMad. Tasty, with a touch of age showing as a hint of honey/butterscotch, which was infused throughout by a leesy almost yeasty character. Very good, but not great - not taut lean or crisp if that's what you want from Chablis, but also the leesy character obscures the transparency of flavor here. Delicious for sure but not quite a knockout as some high end Chablis has been for me.

Served alongside the 02. Initially I preferred the 04, however the 02 blossomed in the glass and surpassed it. Some honey and beeswax typical of older Raveneau. Rich, good mid palate depth. Long on the palate. Lacked the precision and purity of the 02. Seemed to decline in the glass opposed to the 02, that seemed to improve.

We drank the 02 and 04 side by side. Both were decanted for four hours, and could have handled more. For me the 02 stood ou t by a wide margin, and was a more complete and sophisticated wine. The 04 started out somewhat flamboyant, and a few folks liked it better initially, but the 02 won over everyone in the end. A very enjoyable flight, and while Raveneau Butteaux is understated, it's also very sexy.

this bottle was actually quite good. a little more rounded with exotic fruit and tropical notes; but the acidity kept it very refreshing. while the real lemony flavors have now dissipated, this bottle was quite enjoyable, w a nice long finish. will be drinking the rest of mine soon.

Yellow with some greenish tint. Array of lemon drop and lime. Medium weight, actually on the lighter side for a Raveneau without the obvious oaky underpinning of many of these wines. Delicacy that I associate more with the Montee de Tonnerre. Crackling citrus fruit, excellent salinity and acid, chalky finish. This has little in the way of secondary notes and should continue to develop for years. All in all, a leaner style wine in keeping with the vintage character. Excellent.

Amazing showing. Clear fruit turning to slight pear notes and clear citrus notes, just a hint of wool, very long palate, bright acids. Still very fresh, although not a big wine at all, the '04 Fevre Preuses also on the table is much brighter, this stuns with its class and finesse. Amali with Sarah and Jonathan.

Had a glass of this out of Coravin at Nomad, NYC. Perfectly mature with wonderful flavors of limestone, ripe lemons and brown spice. Incredibly complex on the finish with strong notes of oyster shells, clove, minerals and a hint of caramel. Very ripe and intense. This has it all and is ready to go now.

Drank 1/2 of the bottle, then vacu-vined the bottle and set it in the refrigerator for 1 week. Upon opening this is just starting to show some age induced complexity, but is still quite young at 10 years. On point nose of lemon, sea breeze and maybe some truffles and honey. There is a balance between the edgy, tart, lemony acidity and the supple, silky and deep texture of the palate. This is in a great place right now. After sitting for 1 week in the refrigerator, there was some softening and rounding of the edges, but it is remarkable how well this wine holds up, as it was still intense and lively with lemony minerality on the palate.

Phenomenal wine. A step below the MDT (95-96) as far as complexity and length but I far prefer this over the Foret. Mineral, stone, good acid, but very harmonoius. Truly enjoy this wine. Can drink it every day, all day. Very complex.

If an Alien was to land and have a typical Chablis with me - this is the wine I would choose to show him what a textbook Chablis is. Very pale color, lemon and grass on the nose. After 5 minuts in the glass it really does improve and showed a zesty lemon flavour, mid body, fantastic acidity and lots of minerals. It needs 2 years or decanting of 1 hour to really show its potential. Best 2014-2016, worth 91 points now, but potentially 93 points.

Light yellow with some green. Persistent lemon oil, flowers and a whiff of green herbs. Essentially lean but with a glorious layer of flesh to support the tremendous acidity and late minerality. So well poised right now. No secondary notes whatsoever, but immensely pleasing for its quintessential Chablis qualities now. The best bottle of Premier Cru Chablis I've had in some time.

A really good chablis, but more than that it has a unique mouth feel, entirely coats the mouth. Heavier than Dauvissat, and more complex. This wine appears not to have aged a bit. A great long lived laser focused wine.

Popped and poured, paired with scallops. Classic seashell and sea brine nose. Very tight, linear palate with mouth watering acidity and tension. Cut right thru the scallops for a match made in heaven. Finishes dry with copious acidity and edginess lingering. This will be very long lived, and is a textbook Chablis from 2004.

Absolute ‘spanky’ Chablis that has all the piercing, razor sharp detail that one comes to expect Chez Raveneau along with a little spice and fennel action. Voluminous in the mouth with real cut and detail and a torrent of liquid minerals cascading over the palate to finish.

After being teased by a taste of this earlier in the year, this was a chance to enjoy and assess a bottle. Pale to light yellow. This smells like Chablis, which is to say, seashell, iodine, grapefruit, and white flowers. Precise with persistent but not overwhelming acidity, chalky, delicate to medium weight. It picked up some body over time. Really the ideal of what a classic Premier Cru Chablis should be. This will never have the breadth or depth of a Grand Cru, but it has the balance and drive to be extremely enjoyable for a long time. If I have the patience to hold some until its 10th birthday, I would not be surprised to find that I have underestimated it.

Raveneau Butteaux Vertical at Vin, Vino Wine, Palo Alto, CA (Palo Alto, CA): VVW Butteaux vertical with Iron Chevsky -- Showing beautifully with a teeny bit more of the wild exotic Raveneau development sneaking in. A heady nose that my tasting companion called almost "yogurt like" (I can see that--minerally, thick, heady, intense), but not in a bad way. Crushed minerals, stone fruit, chalk, some of the marzipan and white truffle oil creeping in. Silky yet balanced with acidity on the palate, with a tad of a coppery brightness there too. One of my faves of the flight.

Raveneau Butteaux Vertical (Vin Vino, Palo Alto): Ah, now here is a classic iodine Chablis nose. Backward, lean, and stony. Given its combination of light weight and lively acidity, this dances. Lemon oil and white flowers pick up over time. Absolutely lovely, classic, and my favorite wine of the flight.

Nose is delightful minerals, lemon and wet stone. Great salinity on the palate. So many flavors. Wet stone and bright lemon stand out. Great acidity backing it all. Some nice creaminess with the lemon as it warmed in the glass. Probably drank this a little young, but it was still a fine wine.

Has all the Chablis minerality that reveals itself as rainwater and iodine on the nose along with the pulpy/waxy citrus notes that one so often sees from this producer (well I often see them). In the mouth it immediately appears very ripe with notes of canned pineapple but the lemon fruits rein things in quickly and Chablis order is re-established. It does not have the class and tension of the superb MdT or Blanchots from this vintage but is a ripping drink.

This is too young to consume at this stage. Even with decanting it takes hours for the wine to reveal just a hint of what it will turn in to in another 5 years. Buttery, a bit of peach and apricot - that's just about it. At Sturehof in Stockholm.

This wine was decanted and did not show its best until at least an hour after. Initially this wine was very tight and unyielding on the bouquet and palate. After time in the decanter it began to show a more typical Raveneau profile; however, it never completely came together. This was still a very good wine. At this time It just didn't have the extra dimensions that were expected from this producer and vintage. All the components are here for this wine to show better.

Tasted blind. Quite a bit of oak on the nose. Saline, with lemony acidity and medium length. Mineral undertones, quite elegant. Changed quite a bit with air, becoming smoother and less oaky. I think it’s peaking now.

Light golden color, steely and fresh on the nose, perfect oyster wine. Saline, seashell, oily elements. Lighter and reticent until opened up. Classy.

A really odd smell to start and I though it might be flawed, however, this seemed to blow off. This was not present on bottle drunk a year ago. Somewhat shy on the nose. Typical aged Raveneau palate with some honey, beeswax and citrus.

Excellent.

Has all the Chablis minerality that reveals itself as rainwater and iodine on the nose along with the pulpy/waxy citrus notes that one so often sees from this producer (well I often see them).
