Rob comes to London (67 Pall Mall): Another stunning Raveneau MdT (after the 2007 a few weeks ago). Very buttery on the nose, with some herbs. The glory of this wine was on the palate, though, which was saline, bitter and juicy, crisp with the flavour of lime cordial then creamier like tom yum soup, and also marked by notes of sassafrass and quinine. All these notes were beautifully integrated, the wine being intense yet dreamy, and remarkably weightless despite being so sensual. Quite wonderful.

I love Raveneau. It almost feels like a letdown though when the bottle delivers a merely excellent experience. Oyster shell, salinity, and citrus with creamy, perfectly integrated oak tones. It hits all the notes but is just missing the electricity that can elevate it to the spheres. Excellent.

Middag med venner: Blind. Sitrus, mineralsk, grønne urter, fennikel. Fedme i utgang, kompleks, graperuktbitter finish, balansert og med godt grep. Allikevel inne i drikkevinduet.

I’ve had good luck with these while so many others have had pre-mox. Another great bottle - the fruit has really leaned out - perhaps a bit too much. That said it was pristine and delicious - impressive.

Cold decanted for 1-2 hours. Sweet caramel mixes with floral freshness and tropical fruits on the nose. Roasted peaches and white nectarines are generously seasoned with savory herbs and lemon confit candy pieces. A light breeze bringing in the ocean spray gives it a fresh menthol lift. A crushed rock minerality and enveloping acidity cohesively tie the package together.
The well-integrated acidity and spicy oak finish that emerges after the decant create a very long finish that burns into your senses. Tasted with a variety of olive oil vegetables and cheese. Excellent wine in excellent condition.

This wine should be decanted. Spunky odors at first. Blew off over 4 hours when it became excellent with flavors of saline and oyster shells. There may be a hint of honeysuckle but this is pure mineral. Great wine after a few hours.

Tasted blind, this wine had a yellow center and clear rims. The medium+ intensity nose put forth lemon, honey, white stone, and apple notes.
In the mouth, this wine was concentrated, rich and quite long. While it still seemed a bit tight, there was certainly more complexity coming down the pike.
This was a lovely young Rav wine that should develop well. I estimate at least 1 and possible 2 points of upside (not to mention it is pretty darn good now).

light lemon color, vibrant and beaming sweet lime nose, rose petals, on the palate tangerine notes, sweet gum in smaller measure than usual, white stone notes, soft and sweet, fine long fragrant finish, this is very approachable right now but if history holds true there is a great deal yet to come.

From magnum. Format definitely helped here. This was a stunning bottle of Rav. Ocean, sea shells, iodine, lemon, oyster. The palate has amazing freshness, complexity and acidity. Light on its feet yet bursting with energy and verve. Hard to imagine this getting better as I think it was about as good a bottle of Chablis as I've ever had. But this was still young and can be held for a long time.

Paired with a 2004 Dauvissat Clos and followed by Raveneau 2008 MDT and Butteaux
#1 of 6 Opened at 4:30 dinner at 6:30. Full-bodied, citrus and pear fruit with hints of limestone. There was a butteriness to the fruit and a richness on the palate that was a little surprising, yet it didn’t get in the way of the wines acidity and freshness, this is still young and energetic.

The 2004-acidity is noticeable, but so is the producer's central-burgundy wine making. In any other vintage I've come across, the Chablis character would be more masked than in this. It is more hard edged than the previous bottle of 2004 I tasted some four years ago, and this may indicate that the prime of this wine is past.

This is a terrific bottle of 1er Cru Chablis with a pale green gold colour and a lovely nose of lemon, lime, barley sugar and hay with touches of pear and stone. The palate has a lovely tightness and grip that balances the classic fruit characters on the entry and leads into a long mineral finish. Classic !

Wow - impressive and in great shape. I have a bunch of Favre Chablis which are experiencing pre-mox right and left. This is my second of these recently and both were in superb shape. Just lovely aged Chablis - fruit thinned a bit but still very present - outstanding..

Dauvissat & Raveneau Dinner (Shaw's): Epic 96/00/04 Flight. A soaring nose that is so complex and layered -- the minerality and spice component is intense. The palate is exuberant and flat out delicious. Ton of orchard fruit, ocean breeze and zest. Electrically vibrant. A wow wine.

"Only we can put out la forêt fires when thunder strikes the mountain" (Chicago, IL): 2004 might be the white Burgundy vintage of the decade (2010 is the other contender). Electric and exciting. This is inordinately youthful with that brilliant white-hot acidity. There's a very slight hint of reduction here, but that takes a back seat to the brilliant fresh acids here. This will have an amply long and full life, and I think from here, this wine can still only get better. Of the Raveneau MdT flight, this wine shows the most raw potential.

Served alongside 2011 Raveneau Clos, which in comparison had more density but the older MDT had more complexity on the palate and maturity on the nose. A seamless wine, this finished with beautiful richness.

Honey and dried herbs. This took several hours to come around, never showing the weight for which I hoped, not out of line with the vintage. But, what this lacks in power it makes up for in elegance, with honeyed citrus filling the palate. The 2004 Montée de Tonnerre is gorgeous. Drink through 2029.

Popped and poured consumed over a 3 hour lunch. Grapefruit, honey, iodine and lemon on the nose. Lovely texture on the nicely acidic and crisp palate. Expansive yet taut texture, silky and finishes slightly bitter and lifting. Outstanding today but no hurry to drink this soon. An example of why we buy and cellar Raveneau.

At restaurant, tasted over 2 hrs -translucent light-med gold green -reserved flint sea breeze citrus -med/med+ acidity yet remains soft textured, med weight not much fruit or tertiary elements but plenty of minerality elegant -still remarkably fresh, only the faded fruit belies its age, this bottle needs a few more years to become more interesting on the other side of the maturity curve

Drank half the bottle about 12 noon with lunch, finishing the remaining wine at 8pm with dinner. After being open 8 hours, the wine did not drop a step. Full-bodied, lively citrus with rocks and pears, and a hint of vanilla and butter in the background. Lush and fresh on the palate, with just a bit of the steely character of Chablis, this is still young and energetic.

These wines are out of site...’04 is a yr where premox has been an issue with certain producers...I’ve experienced that with Rav...While not the top Cru this was fresh, expressive and delicious...I so appreciate how wonderful these wines show at this age ...

Tasted blind. Surely a medium old chardonnay. Dark yellow color. Nose has acidity and maturity, but nothing more at first. Palate is powerful, but seems to hide something. I was dissapointed by the wine, but I assumed it needed air, and I am lucky I was right. When we revisited this wine after the tasting it had blossomed into a gem. The nose is suddenly jumping out of the glass with thick floral notes, citrus, asparagus and gooseberries. The palate has a high power level with nicely balanced acidity and actually seems almost young. Not a trace of oxidation. Will last at least 5 more years in the cellar.

Rich an youthful. Honeysuckle, wet stone and mineral. Less acidity than some Raveneau's I've had The wine looks yellow gold colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like apple and pear. It tastes like melon. The body is medium. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

Light gold. On first pop, I thought this slightly advanced, but within minutes a kaleidoscope nose of rich honey, almond, and saline burst from the glass, with nothing but freshness and classic aged Chablis character. Honey and lemon on the palate, with full bodied flavors in a lightweight package, finishing with quinine. Killer focus. An incredible wine from the mixed 2004 vintage. This should continue to drink well for some time.

We had the 2014 version yesterday and I remarked to my wife that it would be fantastic in 10 years (the 2014 was great, just very young), so we thought it would be fun to open the 2004 version as a comparison point. This is a wonderful wine in a great place. All of the typical Raveneau characteristics. Powerful and rich. Showing just a touch of honey initially, but with air it became brighter/more energetic. Fantastic.

Just a gorgeous nose of oyster shells, silky lemons and acidic minerals. Silky texture with delicious flavors of lemons, sea shells and complex spices. Perfect ripeness with touches of smoke and minerals on the long, complex, tingly finish. Very good richness for a MdT and seems to me a couple of years short of peak but so drinkable tonight with a good 1+ hr decant. 93+

Litt kort smak. Burde hatt 2 timer karaffel lufting før skjenking. Ikke optimal flaske.

A classic vintage and a classic Raveneau. Lovely aromas of citrus, minerals and butter malt. But also plenty of oak (and some sulfur?). I sometimes have difficulties to differ between a Raveneau and a Puligny, and this was an example. Very intense and concentrated, but the oak is so evident that I experience it as negative. I guess this wine would have been fantastic with less oak.

A stunning showing for this wine from Andy Nathan's cellar. Crisp acidity with a stinging quality along with substantial fruit intensity with notes of oyster shells, lemons and chalky minerals. Light yellow. Almost identical and every bit as wonderful as a bottle 4 months ago-saline, perfectly ripe citrus, fresh, and long. Once again, more reflective of its vintage than the winemaking signature. Delicate but authoritative Montée de Tonnerre. The best wine of the evening, beating the reds hands down.

Lys strågul farge. Litt stum duft initielt. Drakk denne over to timer. Den utviklet seg positivt i ett forrykende tempo i 1,5 timer, etter dette dabbet den verdig av.

This didn't knock my socks off, but was loved by others at our annual lobster and shellfish fest. Very pale in color with mostly minerals on the nose. Light palate of minerals, a tad of lemon and butter. Decent, but I expected a bigger wine. I like Chablis that hurts to hold it in your mouth. This was very refined.

A Dinner Featuring Two 1998 DRC Wines (Friends' House, San Francisco): Medium yellow. Thrilling, quintessential Chablis nose of iodine, brine, and lemon juice. Medium weight with an almost perfect interplay of the fruit, salinity, and mineral elements. Interestingly, this showed more of the vintage than the Raveneau winemaking style in that it did not have the hazelnut/beeswax traits that often mark these wines. In tremendous form and probably capable of delivering another 5 years worth of pleasure.

Astounding, enthralling chardonnay. It's developing in ita right spot: marzipan, nougat, roast almond, lemon curd, elderberry flowers, white lilies. Not a trace of oak notes. On the edge of a creamy texture, bright persistent acidity. A pleaaure to sip and go back to. Great performer! Will last for another 5-6 years.

From magnum. Massive wood notes on the nose, bright artificial lemon, golden hay, saline noes, and flowers notes. I found the nose highly distracting with too many aftereffects of the the wood and seemingly artificial and perfumey lemon and flowers. Strong wood notes persist on the palate along with strong acidity although not particularly sharp. Clearly from magnum, should get better, but I wouldn't touch this wine for a while in this format.

Still remarkably pale and primary appearing. Primary smelling too-saline and underripe lemon joined by white flowers as it warms. Lean, sharply focused, and crystalline. Only begrudgingly does it yield some lemon cream and texture, and that after being open for a good 2 hours. Thrilling in how long it has taken to unfold and its great potential over the next decade. This is the essence of the vintage rather than Raveneau's style.

Firm, smoky minerality on the nose supported by sweet almonds and apples. On the palate it's medium bodied with the age beginning to provide a slightly oily texture to it. Nice acidity and freshness, and a structure that will carry it some years into the future, but no need to cellar further. 92-93

10 Vintages of Raveneau's Montee de Tonnerre (Vin, Vino, Wine in Palo Alto, CA): 10 Vintages of Raveneau MdT 02 thru 12 (minus the 06), poured at a VVW sit down tasting. My third place wine. After previous unhappy experiences with this wine, this bottle scored. It shows classic Chablis character and has finally matured but clearly will rock on for some time. It is salty as many others have commented, steely and just enough white fruit to zing.

Blue Chip Burgundy Dinner (Betony, 41 West 57th Street New York): The nose was immediately pleasing, and it showed incredible richness and depth with notes of stone fruit, crushed stone, citrus, gorgeous floral tones and a hint of smoky spice. On the palate, it was driven and focused as mineral-tinged apple was offset by a hint of flower petal bitterness, creating wonderful contrasts. It faded slowly from the palate, leaving inner floral notes with a hint of steely minerals. Simply put, this is a beautiful wine which pleases from the second you put your nose to the glass.

Really nice - no formal notes but what impressed me was the richness of the wine - not from oak rather fruit density. Its classic chablis, but with a dense core of fruit which borders on tropical flavors. At ten years, it tastes young and could certainly "lean out" for another 2-3yrs, maybe more.

Less rich and fruity than the 2005, but more classic. Maybe more marked by oak, but of the old type. Butter malt and smoke / bacon aromas in addition to citrus. Reminds about a Cotes de Beaune on the nose, -or a top white Rioja. Great acidity and concentration, though, and a great wine in general. But minus a point or two for the evident oak.

After a half hr open, when you bring your nose to the glass, an amazing vinyl/green banana/mint/chalky limestone nose awaits that is so potent and alluring it evokes some deep-seated, Neanderthal sensory orgasm. It takes a bit of time for the puckering lemon acidity to poke out. Big, broad, and creamy...probably the greatest Chablis I've ever had. So very powerful but not clunky. Wow. The glass residuals are wildly saline and honey/creamy a bit. Gets smelling like dry clay with more air.

Burgs and Rieslings at Amali (Amali, NYC): This is stellar. Lemon curd, fresh citrus fruits and vivid stony and chalky notes conveyed with remarkable lightness and purity. There's barely any sensation of weight on the palate, yet such intensity of flavour and persistence on the finish. With more air it turns more creamy, but remains quite compelling over a few hours. Deep, dusty lemon and seashore notes on the nose. The palate is incredibly young and lemony, almost like sucking on a sour lemon drop. Very intense and flavorful, with great definition and cut to the tense fruit. Such palate tension can only be achieved in Chablis! Showing no signs of slowing down after 9 years, I predict this will be a long lived and classic Raveneau to savor.

decanted 90 min. in advance, then returned to bottle, visited over several hours after the course it was served with. light gold w/green-gold highlights; started out slow on nose, but ultimately showed lemon curd, zested citrus oil, white nectarine, wet seashell; med body; lean & pure lemon drop, saline, chalky mineral, over time this fleshed out w/a leesy quality & some well-integrated oak spicing bringing out more stone fruit layered on top of citrus pastry cream. first '04 in several years, really like the restrained nature of this wine, as well as its potential for further development.

Sean's Birthday 2012 (Imperial Treasure, Great World City): Raveneau's Montée de Tonnerre is almost always excellent, but this was a bit too young. I really liked the nose here, with its white fruited depth layered with some sweet citrus notes – lemon and guava I thought – and nice Chablis inflections of seashell and chalk. Very nice. The palate packed quite a punch as would be expected. Rich and powerful, it showed broad-shouldered flavours of red apple flesh on a fleshy white fruit base, and some musky pineapple and dried flower nuances. For a 2004 Chablis, this was actually very generous, with a beautifully round, fleshy feel to it and shades of tropical fruits. In spite of its power though, it retained typical Raveneau hallmarks of great balance and a definition that seemed sculpted in to the wine by lively acidity. It had a good, long finish too, all very fresh and focused. Really imrepssive stuff. However, while the William Fevre Bougros on the same flight was ready to go, I got sense that this was still really tight, and only now beginning to open up slightly. An excellent wine though, and one that I would be glad to drink again in three years’ time.

Pure and utter limestone licking! That might describe this wine a concise way. The colour was relatively bright. In general and especially for its age. The nose appeared to very stony, smoky and mineral’y. Rather lean and subtle. Hardly any oak and definitely not super fruity. Besides the mineral character I got scents of lemon peel, kiwi and other citrus associations. The taste was highly mineral, got refined smoke, even some flintiness and very sublime set back fruit flavours of various kinds of lemons. A slight, but very appropriate oak influence was present. The acid was very 2004’ish and provided the Montée de Tonnerre with plenty of sturdy life. Well, what can I say? The taste was so damn profound and long lasting which impressed me in its own way. I have to confess it wasn’t so easy for me give this wine a “fantastic”, because I missed a certain spark of joyful epiphany or madness. I guess it has something to do with its gaunt and tough character. But that is my “problem”! Great piece of work with quite a lot of aging potential left!

Really nice wine from the king of Chablis:-) the bouquet was quite fruity and a bit sweetness was also detected but a really nice nose with exotic fruits and freshness! The palet was accessible and really nice with pineapple, peaches and a hint of lime with came through more with time. The finish was good and not at all closed as other surrounding vintage’s and it had a pleasant level of acidity that still allowed the fruit to dominate!

2011 Casual Session - 17: Alcohol :: 13% It is always a treat to have a Raveneau in the line up, while this is tight when opened, it is very fine and you know this going be great when giving it enough aeration. Indeed, this wine blossom from the glass after 4.5hrs with peaches, lime, citrus, floral, a dash of fresh honey and the tell-tale aromas of almond, mineral that exist in Raveneau's Chablis. Highly focus, refreshing and perfume, quote from my friend: I can't stop sniffing it! While this is not has the sheer complexity and depth of the 2000 Valmur, this does offer similar mouth feel that is lush, creamy and fine. Complex flavors of ripe peaches, lime, lemon, almond and mineral expand across the mouth with razor sharp focus and precision with very long finish that has excellent persistent and juiciness. Building up more weight too. Keep this for another 5yrs and it will be even more complete. Raveneau, the best in Chablis, to me. 91-93

2004 Vintage Burgundy Tasting and Oxidation Check (Part 1) (BLT Fish, New York City): Warmer profile than the other Chablis served, with more oak and less depth in evidence; those two points might be related. Typical Raveneau MdT and certainly good, but my least favorite of the flight. Other tasters seemed to get more out of it than I did.

Pot Roast at my place; Prum, Raveneau, L'Aigueliere, Pichon Lalande, Rostaing, VT & Graham's (My place.): Bill mentioned he was bringing a Chablis and I had a hunch it might be a Raveneau, so I switched my appetizer from scallops in a tarragon cream sauce, to scallops in a morel cream sauce and the wine ended up working really well with the dish. Quite vibrant acidity in this wine. More so than I can recall experiencing in some time and the acidity really gives the wine a nice edginess. There’s a wonderful saline, oyster shell quality that really married itself well to the scallops, with lemony citrus, mineral and a touch of smoky oak. A-.

Some lemony oyster shell on the nose, with a dose of powdered lemon candy. Tight, tart and fairly unevolved palate, showing prominent acid and edginess that is very 04. Not a wow Raveneau yet, but has the potential to evolve into a much better wine.

Showing off some butter scotch right now which to me means that the wine is entering its dumb phase. This is just on the nose. The palate is still pure, and has a sweetness to the extract. Not as strong as the '05, more fine, or "thin" but still wonderful.

Dinner @ Fringale (San Francisco, CA): Closed on the nose at first. With time this picked up weight and took on a paradoxicaly "butter" and "steely" profile at the same time. Good minerality and a whiplash finish that seemingly left, and then came back. Lovely ying/yang harmony.

This wine was opened and poured. It should have been decanted. Initially the aromatics shows lemon, oyster shell and stone notes. The wine begins understated and reserved. The color shows a light yellow with a tinge of green it is youthful and vibrant. The medium bodied palate initially shows excellent balance and acidity on the finish to give the wine structure. This wine improved with airing and added complexity and nuances over time. It showed its best about an hour and a half after opening. The wine will benefit from a few more years of bottle age.

At first it seems as if this Chablis is simply built from lemon juice and chalk such is its tightness and reluctance to play straight from the bottle. A little time in the glass sees it loosen its grip and there are gorgeous whiffs of white flowers and a touch of fennel. In the mouth it has piercing mineral line enveloped by a sheath of sappy, pure white peach fruit. The length of flavour is superb and whilst it is enjoyable now it should be sublime in another 5+ years.

A blast of pure freshness on the nose. Mineral and stony citrus. The mouth is vibrant and reminds me of lemon custard, but with a very vibrant acidic backbone that carries it. A brilliant wine that is just screaming for oysters. Another shining example of why Raveneau is so sought after and cherished.

Very pale. Classic sea spray and lemon oil nose. Lean and light bodied with driving, mouth watering acidity, great spine, and excellent persistence. Built for Chablis purists without any concessions to those seeking fat or flamboyance. In fact, probably the least hefty Raveneau I have ever tried but still very enjoyable now in its rather ascetic infancy. Having just tasted the 1990 version of this, I wonder whether this will ever develop the richness and layering that the older wine showed. No question, though, about the potential for a very long life span here given its underlying structure and tension. Excellent at very least.

Outstanding young Raveneau! This wine shows mint, seashells and citrus notes on the bouquet that develops additional complexity and notes of beeswax, stones, orange blossom with airing (the wine was decanted). The wine is currently a youthful light golden color. Seamless medium bodied palate that echoes the bouquet and shows great balance and well integrated acidity that gives the wine grip. Excellent complexity on both the bouquet and palate that continues to evolve and change over time.

Dinner at Nectar with Scott and Rob -- generous offering by Scott, showing absolutely great. This is the glory of Chablis! Soars from the glass with minerally minty seashell and citrus laced with orange blossom. "Ethereal" on the palate and keeps you grabbing the glass for another sip. Raveneau delivers!

Tasted April 29, 2008 at an offline. Opened and served immediately. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of lingenberry, grapefruit, peach, wet grass and wet stones. Flavors of limes, lychee, minerals and an usual taste of corn tortillas on the finish. Bright acidity, medium body. Drink or hold.

I sometimes have difficulties to differ between a Raveneau and a Puligny, and this was an example. Very intense and concentrated, but the oak is so evident that I experience it as negative. I guess this wine would have been fantastic with less oak.

Smak av solmoden sitrus, kandisert sitrusskall, salte ristede mandler, kamskjell?, Kvitseidsmør og honningmelon. Fantastisk eleganse, kompleksitet, dybde og lengde.

Stupendous bottle, amazing drinkability window. Just barely showing signs of darker gold color. Heady nose of peach, truffle oil, hazelnut oil, sea foam. Ethereal on the palate with swirls of nuanced flavor chiming in -- concentrated fruit, maitake mushroom, coconut, orange blossom oil. Raveneau at its best!

It is always a treat to have a Raveneau in the line up, while this is tight when opened, it is very fine and you know this going be great when giving it enough aeration. 91-93

This wine improved with airing and added complexity and nuances over time. It showed its best about an hour and a half after opening. The wine will benefit from a few more years of bottle age.

Raveneau delivers!

french16 does Dallas! (Suze in Dallas, TX): WIML91

Classic chablis. saline, seashells and stones on the nose that merge right onto the palate. Considerable weight and yet still very detailed and pure. terrific stuff.

Drank with baked cod in lemon butter. Dense nose. Lime prominent. Wax hints. Good length. Still young.

Truly superb. Fantastic mix of lime and minerals with hints of the waxy Raveneau mouthfeel. Pure, balanced, and utterly seductive.

Wow... stunning nose of chalky apple and a touch of lime and elderflower. A beautifully poised midpalate with perfect acidity, mouthfeel and a lovely, long finish. At the end there are floral and steely notes. Absolutely winderful, and would age for years. Decanted.

Silky smooth, crisp finish, beautiful color. One of the finest Chablis. Paired with abalone dish, outstanding. Consumed at Alain Passard/Kinch dinner at Manresa.
