France 44 Winery Series: GD Vajra (France 44): Pretty. Super long and pure. Inspired by Thomas Jefferson notes on nebbiolo. He described as dry as a claret, sweet like medera, and brisk like champagne. 1g dosage- 50% nebbiolo/50% pinot noir.

Orange peel, lemon juice, fresh apple, fresh pear, fresh quince, chalk on the nose with a hint of cinnamon. The palate adds anise, fennel seeds, dry honey and malt, ending with a very intense note of lemon peel including the white pith. Overall, more intense flavors than aromas here but both are nice.
Medium body with medium + acid. Overall, this is a nice traditional method sparkler. It made an okay pairing with grilled snapper. Though I think the best pairing for this wine is something like a charcuterie board.

G.D. Varja Seminar; 2018 vs 2019 (Boston University): A great way to start the seminar and completely unexpected as we've never seen or heard of this wine. As Giuseppe noted, Italians "love French bubbles," so they started making their own. Apparently, this is not widely available outside the winery. It was delicious.
The wine is a 50/50 blend of Nebbiolo and Pinot Nero (Noir) done via Metodo Classico. Most of the grapes come from the Nostra Signora Della Neve vineyard in Roddino. The vineyard is very steep, requiring that all work be performed by hand, from pruning to harvest. The soils are poor and calcareous, which lends a touch of chalky minerality to the wine.
The grapes are harvested early in the morning into small bins which are transferred directly to the winery to preserve maximum acidity and fragrance. The Pinot is direct press juice. The Nebbiolo is saignée and gets about 6 hours of skin contact, which gives the wine its very pale, pink color. The wine is fermented in neutral vessels and spends 60 months (!) on the lees prior to disgorgement.
The wine has a very fine mousse and a delicate nose of strawberries, currant, and peonies. On the palate, the wine adds a dose of dry extract and chalk. The acidity is fantastic and there is a very nice texture to the wine. The finish is long, dry and ever so slightly bitter. A perfect aperitif.
A very nice bottle of bubbles at $30 that certainly gives the "French bubbles" a run for their money.

Fun and different — tart and lean and dry like a grower rosé champagne but with the unexpected addition of classic Nebbiolo rose perfume on the nose and dried rose hips tea on the palate. Plus a bit of tar? And strawberries. Hints of chocolate cherries on the nose. Well made and interesting.

Salmon-orange color. Deep yellow cherry and strawberry with a touch of blood orange - very fruit forward rather than toasty / spicy (although they are playing some supporting role). Robust acidity, level of concentration makes it almost feel sticky / desert wine like. Long finish, persistent bubble. Went excellently well with semi-rich food like Chinese pork bun.

Really enjoyed this on a warm, late-September day sitting outside. Maybe not the most elegant sparkler (compared to higher-quality Champagne), but it can definitely hold its own in the fruit and freshness departments. Very nice rosé sparkler.

Apricot and strawberry on the nose with a deeper shade of pinkish salmon. The nose continued on the palate that was complemented by a crisp acidity. Perhaps overly aggressive bubbles and somewhat lacking in persistence when compared to something like the Billecart-Salmon Rose, but a very strong buy at the price point. Vajra continues to impress. Pungent red berries, rose hips and cherries are balanced by a refreshing limey/tonic streak. Terrific with slow cooked king salmon done simple with a green salad and soft rye bread. Could be really interesting with some bottle age, right now the midpalate is fat, fruity, and fun. Not particularly refined or subtle, this was best after some air and fully chilled. Warmer, it came across more like a grenadine syrup flavored Izzy fruit soda. Good enough QPR <$30.

Combines 50% Nebbiolo grapes from Barolo with 50% Pinot Noir from Alta Langha, making a sparkler just like Champagne is made, only from Piedmont. The vivid almost florescent pink is strikingly beautiful, and pours into a glass with an intensely frothy white head. Complex and fruity in both the nose and the mouth, with concentrated strawberry, cherry, raspberry, and watermelon. Very refreshing acidity, crisply textured, superb with most foods, and tannic enough to drink well with meaty dishes. Most sparklers deteriorate once the bubbles dissipate, but this one tastes just fine as a dry rose wine. Overall, not just a novelty, but a seriously good rose sparkler.

Coho salmon in color, this sparkling wine (50% Nebbiolo/50% Pinot Nero) reveals intense aromas of tart rhubarb, orange rind, wild cherry and anise on the nose. The mouth feel is medium bodied with brisk acidity and more rhubarb elements. The finish is very well balanced with the high acidity and fruit in beautiful balance. 13% abv.

The highest acid, most piercing and refreshing, sparkling wine not from Champagne that I have ever tasted. It also delivers an expressive purity of red fruits, including raspberry, lingonberry, and sour cherry, rhubarb, light root vegetables, citrus, including kumquat, and carambola. It was equally delicious as a slightly effervescent Rosé on the third day. The same blend as a still wine would be remarkable. Likely to last for 20 years! Special!

From memory. Gray pinky salmon. The nose is muted strawberry and yeasty. The palate is lively and leans towards red fruit flavors. The finish is medium and clean. The overall profile is more like a round, fruity Cava, distinctly south of Champagne but modest.

Yummy, tasty, PnP out of the fridge. Has a nice red fruitiness and a persistent spice to the palate. A straightforward, fruity rose but the spice adds a layer of complexity, and makes this affordable rose a great Tues night wine. I loved it and we drained the whole bottle. So drinkable.

I guess these all would have benefited from more time, this last bottle seemed the most balanced, mature reddish fruit and very clean.

Delicious and oh so refreshing, this Nebbiolo sparkler hit the spot as I coast into the end of a long but good work week. Tart cherry and orange rind are supported by chalk and earth notes, with med+ acidity and a long and delightful finish. Not sure of disgorgement date, but drink now through 2020+.

This bottle seemed rounder and more like sparkling rose than rose sparkling. Enjoyed with shrimp and grits.

Beautiful salmon color. Very creamy in the mouth and quite original, with a mix of 50% Nebiollo + 50% Pinot Noir. Acidity is medium-low with ok lenght.

Our house sparkler. Always a winner, although there is significant stylistic variation from year to year. This bottle is from the softer and more hedonistic case we acquired most recently. Delightful.

My third bottle of a case I bought my wife for Christmas (she LOVES this unique sparkler). Pretty light pink color. Open nose of roses, yeast, lemon peel, and anise. Crisp palate of cherry, cream soda, yeast, citrus, anise and vanilla. Excellent length. Refreshing acidity. Terrific Italian rosé sparkler made from Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo.

Delicious sparkler composed of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Nebbiolo. Light pink. Nose of citrus, dust, roses, yeast, and a little licorice. Delightful, balanced palate of black cherry, licorice, lemon, minerals, bread, and vanilla. Excellent length. Refreshing acidity. Fine effervescence.

Interesting to get rose petals in a frizzante. Aggressive bead and intense bitterness on the finish. I'd like to see this after it settles, though I'm not sure if we're talking a few months or a few years.

Strawberries, pink grapefruit and watermelon notes with some toast character.
Dry and refreshing on the palate with large moussé and citrusy bitterness. Peach, grapefruit and redcurrant with notes of peach stone and salt liquorice. Leesy finish.
A refreshing sparkler.
