Gold in the glass with very fine but surprisingly minimal bubbles (extra clean glasses?). The mousse was there in the mouth. Wonderfully aromatic with nuts, brioche, light mushroom, marzipan and yeast. On the palate it’s mouth filling and rich with flavours of brioche, custard, nuts and mushroom (in a good way). The finish is long with the brioche richness and the nutty flavours continuing. Wonderful!!

Monday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): No mistaking the amount of dosage here. Opulent and very generous on the palate, with a white-fruited sweetness and creaminess that balances the acidity of the vintage. Modest autolytic notes, but quite fresh for its age.

Initially quite reticent on the nose, but rapidly opens up to yeasty, toasty aroma; rich and full on the palate while simultaneously being remarkably focussed and precise; long stone-fruit finish.

Jabot vs Faiveley (Bellyhappy Chef): Blind. Oxidative, mildly corked, nutty with some brioche, low acid with dense body. Definitely not like how a 2004 champagne should taste like

Negoce face-off at Bellyhappychef: Thought this was a late ‘90s or early ’00s, Pinot-dominant blend that was stylistically reminiscent of Bollinger. Was drinking beautifully at the start with finesse and elegance, but unfortunately in the Sensory glass it was obvious this was corked (albeit not too badly). At a good stage of development with some honey notes otherwise.

Good wine, light in colour for its age, moderate mousse, and an aroma dominated by citrus. Fairly creamy mouthfeel, but the citrus dominates somewhat. The vintage belongs to the most lean I have known in northern Europe. I hesitate to say "very good," so this clocks in as "good".

Dinner with Diego & Frederica (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Quite dark gold. Very vinious. Low mousse and bubbles. Almost toffeed. Seems fully mature, somewhat to my surpris compared to previous bottles for 2 cases bought and stored together in 2014. Our guests liked it more. Need to revisit because I am concerned it may be ageing prematurely....or just an 'off' bottle. For me, it was a quarter the pleasure of the Nyetimber BdB 2003 we opened last weekend.

Delicious and well made champagne. At peak. Complex perfume and palate with tertiary notes. Golden color, gentle bead. Quite autolytic, but overall very balanced, with smell and flavors of brioche and nuts, redder fruit and blood orange at the front, with apple, creamy Meyer lemon and lime note at the end to give it lift. The wine still has freshness, but more lift from the citrus flavors than from incisive acidity. Perfect now with fresh picked Dungeness crab with a squeeze of Berss lime, fresh baked bread, and roasted bell pepper salad. Perfect big house Champagne and glad we have two more in the cellar, though probably won’t wait too long to drink them as this feels on the downhill side of the curve.

Very yeasty nose, carries through to the palate with a touch of salted brioche. Dry, not at all or fruity, full bodied, big bubbles but kept in check.... This is proper Champagne.

This was anything but restrained, unlike many 2004 champagnes I've opened. I've often found the vintage characterized by soaring acid and somewhat restrained fruit, but not this bottle. It blasts you with buttered bread, baked apples and lemon. No subtlety here, but we really enjoyed it last night. CT said my last bottle was drank a while ago, so this must really be the last.

(Disgorged in 2013, 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, dosage 8 gr/l) Yellow colour with wonderful tiny bubbles that give way for the lovely maturing nose showing minerals, citrus zest and a touch of hazelnuts. Palate is soft with a smoothing apples acidity transforming into a creamy mid and before the lengthy finish showing a nice buttery note. (Best 2019-2029)

I've read varying comments on this but found it to be right in my wheelhouse. Plenty of verve with good yeasty notes. Nice warm finish. Had with bang bang shrimp starter course that it held up very well with.

Citrus and acid-driven vintage. Drunk just two days after the 2002-vintage, and this recent comparison showed up its deficiencies. It is betrayed by its vintage - one that was a challenge across Europe and across wine styles.

Creamy and agreable mousse. Aromas of apples, toast and autolysis. Pronounced citrus acidity, which led me to think it was a BdB. Narrow and a bit tart, but I like it. Quite a lot of toast for a Pol Roger.

Interesting berry-driven bouquet: wild strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, floral notes with very present elderflower and violet, pears in red wine; some pastry notes with brioche, vanilla pastry cream, bread dough, cotton candy. Classic 'maison-style' champagne that was enjoyable to drink, despite lacking more complexity. Could be considered as still in its youth, with a high freshness that helps to balance a fairly high dosage. Certainly better than the 2009 that disappointed us a few months ago. 90pt

Wow, has this wine changed dramatically since I last tried it five years ago. Then it was crisp, lively, apples and citrus with a little brioche. Last night, any fruit was beaten into submission with a baguette. One of the most autolytic wines I’ve opened in a while, the dried pear and tangerine flavors were cloaked in yeast. Besides being bready, this was huge! There’s no need to worry about it being overwhelmed by a hearty meal. By the end of the bottle, I enjoyed it. The first glass was so different than I expected that I was initially taken aback, much as when taking a sip of iced coffee from my mug when I expected water. The coffee may have been delicious, but the shock almost made me spit it out.

Good development. Starting to mature. Nose with a touch of nuts and some smoke, bread and bakers yeast, white flowers (lilacs), and sweet lemon drops. Palate is creamy and full bodied, ripe apples, fudge, bread, touch of spicy smoke and honey dipped nuts. A very good house Champagne.

Two bottles. Served in medium-sized white wine glasses. Straw gold colour. Major and persistent streams of tiny lively bubbles. Nose hasn't changed since last drank in May 2019 - lovely pure Chardonnay character - stable-room fresh straw, lots of toasted yeasty Hovis bread, hints of oyster shells. Palate remains young and taut.....suggestive of low dosage or just youth? Big reverb and resonance on a very heady and long Chardonnay-driven finish. Needs a few years to open although the strongly tart low dosage structure previously noted has dialed down faster than I expected. A fab Champagne and brilliant QPR at under US$70.
For the grand address and the decent vintage I’d say this was just ok. Nose nice bread, rich ripe apple fruit. Palate, acidity very bright. Nice bit of savoury development. But all round given what it’s supposed to be, perhaps a bit... dull.

Dinner For Returning Friends (Our House, Hong Kong): First of 18 bottles purchased in 2014. Served in quite large white wine glasses. Light gold colour. Major and persistent streams of tiny fruvious bubbles. Nose is lovely typical and very accessible Chardonnay character - stable-room fresh straw, hints of oyster shells. Palate is still very young and taut and it remained that way all evening.....suggestive of 'Extra Brut' low dosage. Big reverb and resonance on a very heady and long typical all-Chardonnay vinious finish. Needs at least 5+ years to open up and the strong tannic 'Extra Brut' structure suggests a very long life. This is serious Champagne and excellent value. 92+

Last two bottles drunk before Mother's day dinner with family - last drunk (and noted) at same occasion in '16! Full bodied; packed with focussed cooked apple and pineapple flavour. Nuts and yeasty bread. Assertive integrated acidity and granitic/steely minerality. Powerhouse champagne. Drinking beautifully now but with the structure to evolve if you like your fizz mature - although probably not improve further. Take your choice! Should hold up, based on this showing, for at least 20 years from vintage.

3 very consistent bottles on the day. Bright and energetic, good to see the energy in this as we usually have them on the old and a bit flatter side. That been said the wine lacked a bit of depth of flavor and excitement. Elegant for sure and very enjoyable but was not up to standards with cuvee status. Good ripe feel, spirited and bright, light toasty edge. 91

From the wine list at Sushi of Gari Tribeca (again) last bottle. This is definitely in the richer, bready, yeasty style of champagne. I think it is pretty tasty and complements the omakase sushi dinner very nicely. Good value for the price here if you like this style of champagne - with a little bit of age on it for some added depth.

12 Days of Christmas; 12/21/2017-1/1/2018 (NYC, Vermont, Boston): From the wine list at Sushi of Gari (NYC) and consumed with omakase dinner. This was very enjoyable, a golden yellow color, with a toasty nose, on the palate it was creamy, with brioche and lemon curd. Tasted a bit older than other makers vintage ‘04s I have had, but for me this added to the experience. I would be happy to drink this again.

Quite a deep yellow. Surprisingly mature nose. Much more secondary than other 2004s I have had. Almonds and macaroons. Nowhere near the heights of the Moet Grand Vintage 2004 which was far, far superior.
*I have bought two more bottles and give this the benefit of the doubt that possibly I had a badly stored bottle

This drank similar to the 04 Grand Dame that preceded it, exhibiting the same sweeter lime profile of that wine. However, in defense of this Pol Roger, there was some decent apple here, and the acidity was better, too. Ultimately, like the Grand Dame, just too much dosage for my fragile palate.

Paul and Ashley's Champagne Party (Paul and Ashely's House): Smelled of sugared toast like when you were a kid with a light oak influence and warm apples. Very fine bubbles which popped and bounded around in the mouth. Had an interesting "oxidized" note. The tree fruit faded at the finish but the acid created a significantly long finish.

(From Magnum, Disgorged in 2016) Yellow colour with a lovely intense nose showing minerals, citrus and hazelnuts. Lovely creaminess on the palate with a fresh acidic finish showing lime peel. Well round ripe, full, rich wine and spot on the money now. Almost too round for its sake and we wonder on longevity here and whether they went for that earlier fuller giving feel but missing out on acidity and thus longevity. We would suggest one drinks it now while it has a bit of brightness in it. A good 91-92

This was just 'ok' for me. About 60% pinot noir. Plenty of refreshing acidity but not much biscuit or body (which I look for in PR). Will improve, but not at the level of the 2002 for me. Hold to 2020.

This bottle was gift from Hugues Romagnan (export sales manager) at Pol Roger. Normally 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Deep yellow color. 3rd the time I have had this wine. High bead. Notes of creamy white fruit, toast and yeast. Round finish. 90-91 points.
Bright yellow color with a seductive nose of mild flowers, citrus and pear. The body is sumptuous, lovely to chew on with lively acidity and attractive minerality. Flavors of tangerine, roasted pear, bread pudding, cherry and honey lemon weave effortlessly in this blend whilst offering tinges of ginger spice and crème fresche. Finishes long and fresh with chalky but refined minerals tones. Drink now until 2029.

Mother's day family dinner. Following on from my last bottle of Pol 2006 Rosé (thirsty family!); a notably superior beast. Brilliant champagne. Has that beautiful sweet complexity on the nose, the fine mousse, great youthful freshness and dry mouthfeel, ending up in a balanced, savoury, finish that keeps you coming back for more. For some aroma wheel parameters; nougat, brioche, Sicilian blood oranges, lime, roasted hazelnuts all in one. The most remarkable feature of this champagne, is it's seamless welding together of all these elements.
I think this is drinking perfectly right now, the way I like my champagnes, but for sure this would last a long long time yet if you are so inclined.
We served this with some Kalix bleak roe and that combo was killing the competition at the Christmas table!

Pol Roger Tasting (Sunfish Cellars): A small glass at a tasting. My memory is fuzzy, so forgive the lack of detail. But this clearly differentiated itself as more complex than the NV Pol Roger Brut, and similarly the 2000 Winston Churchill was significantly better.

Pol Roger Tasting (Sunfish Cellars, St. Paul, MN): Light medium gold color. Drank 1 glass from two different bottles; one from British distribution and one destined for the U.S. One had been disgorged approximately 9 moes later than the other. On the whole, there was little difference between the two. The U.S. bottle has a bigger nose up front yeast, pear, apple, brioche, light toast, lovely white flowers; the palate shows tart apple, tart pear, mineral, brioche, spice, medium plus body, some citrus, layered.

Strågul. Brioche, modne gule epler, voldsomt rik.

Halpern Enterprises Portfolio Tasting (Toronto, ON): Well well. This showed a lot better than last time. Big, full and rich, though not quite yet fully mature, the nose blasts caramel, espresso, mint, brown spice, brown sugar, molasses, candied lime, and tangerine. This wine is great. Zesty, good foam leaving a creamy biscuity after taste in the mouth the flavour of a plain rich tea biscuit. This is something different from the normal run-of -the-mill Champagnes much better, to be savoured and therefore not to be rushed.
Life is too short to drink poor wine.
Drank at the 2015 Blenheim Palace Battle Proms Picnic Concert which took place directly overlooking the impressive South Front of the Palace The Pol Roger was Sir Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne house. Blenheim Palace is the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The Battle Proms at Blenheim is especially poignant in 2015 as we all honour the 50th anniversary of Churchill's death and we raise a glass in his memory. The Grace Spitfire ML407 gracing the skies above the Battle Prom silhouetted against the evening sun and gave a carefully choreographed display, the orchestras played a performance of Pomp and Circumstance March No 5 in C Major & Nimrod, both by Sir Edward Elgar. This is the way to enjoy classic Champagne at its best. It was all very emotional.

Lovely dinner and vertical tasting at Haut Bailly (Château Haut Bailly): Certainly after going through 10 red wines in a vertical tasting, including recent and more evidently tannic ones, a glass of Champagne is more than welcome. But tasting the Pol Roger 2004 reminds me how good that vintage can be for some Champagne houses. Not that I have had that many 2004s, but I have not met one that I did not like. This was no exception: crisp and focused with mid palate opulence, marked by wet stone, citrus and chalky aspects, it was just palpable pleasure to sip on a sunny June evening - after assessing 10 vintages of Haut Bailly. Long finish!

The wine shows a beautiful medium lemon colour and many small bubbles.
It displays a great autolytic character with a mature palette of good intensity aromas of toast, brioche, hazelnuts, rye bread, green apple and hints of lemon peel. It is off-dry in the mouth with a high zesty acidity. Its mousse is very delicate and creamy, and the flavour concentration is pronounced. The finish is very long.
It is an elegantly-balanced sparkling in which the flavour concentration, acidity, mousse and dosage blends in harmony. It fills the mouth with rich flavours and freshness at the same time. It is drinking quite well right now, but it could benefit from another 3-5 years of bottle ageing, there is enough flavour and acidic structure to mellow the style towards a more nutty profile.

Year 3 - Super Tasting 1 of 5 - Dave does Birth Year Wines: This come across as youthful and vibrant, slightly leaning to the rich side of things, though perhaps lacking a touch of complexity for today. The nose reveals peach, honeydew melon, caramel apple, honey, white flowers, light hints of toffee and mint. The palate has an inherent rich, roundness with linear acidic peach notes running across the medium plus finish. Hard to evaluate today because I think it's best days are ahead of it, though I have heard other showings have been more open. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt at 92 based on potential if perhaps not totally merited from this showing today.

Year 3: Super Tastings Round 1 of 5; Dave Does Birth Year Wines (Dave's House): Popped and poured, followed approximately one hour. Light gold in colour, with persistent micro bubbles. On the nose, this is a touch tighter and less and less advanced than the example we had tried just a few weeks ago. With some coaxing, the nose provided aromas of fresh cut red apple, lemon zest, crushed rock, brioche, caramel and baking spice, with a light overlay of oak. On the palate, nice richness and concentration. Acidity is quite brisk providing freshness and the finish is medium plus, with lingering tastes of tart red apple, citrus zest, mineral, yeast, and spice. Definite room for improvement. Based on this bottle, I'd say hold, although there seems to be some variability.

Lots and lots of bittersweet fresh apples, some brioche and bitter almonds on the nose.
Clean, flawless with an acid that is like coming right out from a sourish apple. There is some bittersweet apples as well on the midpalate followed by fresh almonds.
This is obviously too young but my fience and I wanted a fresh, clean champagne to celibrate that we have just got engaged. A step down from Winston Churchill, but at this price this must be the biggest QPR wine of all wines from Pol Roger.

Had to check out this wine after a recent epic experiene with the 1990 vintage. Decanted. Very enjoyable and classic PR nose. In the mouth, elegant and fullbodied, with great accidity and backbone. Should benefit greatly from further cellaring. I would say this wine can well be enjoyed now, but would reach a new plateau from around 2018. Bulk of my further bottles will definitely rest until 2023 - 2030, however.

Very much like a lot of the 2004 vintage champagnes accessible in its relative youth. Rich, and round, yeasty, vibrant and very giving. Very generous champagne and a joy to be had at this age. Lots of age ahead of it too. 92

2014 K&L Champagne Tasting (K&L San Francisco Store): K&L Champagne Tasting-SF. Nose of yeast, light citrus character, baked bread and touch of minerals, more of the same on the palate, lovely taste, impression of honey, mouth coating taste, served a touch too warm for me, medium/big body, long finish, at $90, a definite maybe but probably not buy.

Fete de Champagne Grand Tasting (Astor Center, NYC.): Tight and lean on the nose with minerals and lemon. Very focused on the palate: wicked and tight with lemon and spice - just delicious. Sweet pear, spice, ginger finish. I really like the 04's, but they may not be for everyone. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 16.5-17/20.

Perhaps my favourite house. I Really love the 2002 Brut Vintage. This is my first 2004. Exciting!
On the nose quite generous with apples, yellow fruit and some brioche. A whiff of yeast reveals its relative youth. On the palate bright and a bit tighter, but still generous, as expected from this producer. Citrus, apples, yellow stonefruit etc. Medium+ finish. Not as fantastic as the 2002 but still a very, very good champagne.

Has the freshness of the 2004 vintage, perhaps even a hint of austerity, but the aromas already seem quite evolved, with candied fruit and a hint of hazelnuts; lovely floral notes too and red apple on the palate, good length. It is certainly more energetic than the 2000 or 1999 were at this age, but it does not have the power and effortless balance of the 2002. Hard to predict a future. At the Grand Hotel in Stockholm.

Wonderful!!

Bready up front apple/pear flavours with hints of more exotic peachiness in the background. Excellent mineral spine and harmonious balancing acidity.
Drinking beautifully now but no rush - should easily make 15+ years from vintage with this structure.

Drank at the 2015 Blenheim Palace Battle Proms Picnic Concert which took place directly overlooking the impressive South Front of the Palace
The Pol Roger was Sir Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne house.

Seemed younger today. Wait 6-12 months or open 1-3 hours in advance.

Light yellow colour with a neverending stream of tiny bubbles.
The palate is youthful showing minerals, citrus and a hint of nougat, freshly baked bread and some orange.
The palate is youthful with nicely balanced fruit and acidity.

Golden colour, tiny bubbles, with sweet apples and a touch of brioche and citrus. Not quite on the same level as the 2002. Seems to be ready for drinking. 92-93 pts.

first bottle from case
The time was right, and this is a delicious drop, toasty and rich.
More forward than the 2002s. A wonderful vintage fizz

Wildman Tasting at Peninsula (Chicago, IL): A hint of orange peel on the nose, but otherwise, the nose is slightly more reticent. A very lees-y Champagne that lacks the razor sharp acidity that I prefer. Nonetheless, a well-made bottle of bubbly.

Quite tight and lemony with a crumble of biscuit on the nose. It had a nice creamy palate and possessed good detail and cut.

The wine looks light gold colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like apple and has a bready scent to it. It tastes like apple and bready. The body is medium. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

Celebrated into the new year with this. Good stuff, but quite some acidity here. It got better with some time.
But I would wait one or two years before opening.

tasted at a free wine tasting of the winery at Radrizzani's Milan. Fine perlage, enticing acidity, sontuous minerality and long aftertaste. Superior champagne

Roberson Wine Christmas Walkabout (Roberson Wine, Kensington High Street): Slightly oxidative nose with hints of toffee apple. Very dry palate with iodine complexity. Real depth and obvious quality. Glorious. More impressive at this stage than (the more expensive) Cuvée Winston Churchill '04. 17.5/20.

Surprisingly open, the apples already show, however still very citrusoriented. Will mature much sooner than the 2002. Wait 12-24 months.

Far too acidic. Disappointed since I think 2002 is really good value for money.

Lovely soft and round fruitfilled Champagne.
Mature tones already, with low acid (not for the cellar) and nice bread.
Lovely drinker!
Will by more, for emidiate/early consumtion.
Might end up as house champagne of the year at Domaine Ramberg? :-)
Good & reliable stuff!
