Dark red; intense concentrated nose with dark berries and some licorice; broad soft silky attack also with quite some power (15.5%!), nice acidity, no jam, lightly biting tannins and a slight dry mouth towards the end; lots of taste and intense; really nice (but on the powerful side)

Wine Bordeauxphilia (at Adina's): Traditional Rhône Valley winemaking, with fermentation in concrete tanks and aging in foudres and demi-muids for 18 months Deep, ruby color with complex aromas of black fruits, spices, and garrigue. Full-bodied and powerful, with velvety tannins and a long, lingering finish. Excellent CDP. Can drink now or age further.

Dark berries, licorice and garrigue. Good acidity and soft tannin. Full bodied wine with a firm amount of sweetness. The wine is in its maturity stage now.

Christmas dinner at Bruce and Robin's. Decanted and aerated to 2 hours in the late afternoon, then rebottled and consumed at dinner with beef tenderloin. Fairly high EtOH without food, but at the table with food was not notably hot. Spectacular wine. Drink now with air or hold.

A very dark colour; rich, concentrated blackberry fruit, a slight sweetness and a touch spicy. Still youthful, and perhaps rather dominated by the alcohol, but very enjoyable.

This wine is in a great condition at the moment. The tannins have somewhat resolved, but there is still a nice tannic grip on the mid-palate and aftertaste. The taste is full-bodied, intensive, rich and fruity, displaying lovely notes of raspberry compote, ripe dark fruits, provencal herbs, tobacco and smoke. This wine is having a strong authentic regional character, but it also provides lots of pure enjoyment.

PnP. ABV 15.5%. Great nose but I couldn’t really handle such high level of alcohol in wines anymore. You could feel alcohol at backend, most likely ABV is at 16% or above, almost reaching Sake level.

In its own right, this is some seriously powerful CdP with a high fruit level for those who like full throttle sweets, as well as enough funk to please the finikiest funk fanatic in the room. A bit liquor like, marrying raspberry liquor to a horse stable, wrapped in a sheet of 400 grit sandpaper. Sound interesting? Drink, its ready to go
* This is a one bottle wine that should only be enjoyed alongside its peers.

PNP Dark purple color. Raisin bread, plum, iron component. The characteristics are so different from the two Bordeaux wines we just had that it really stands out. Weight is medium plus. Hint of blood orange with a bit of forrest floor component.

[Not tasted blind as I brought the bottle] Nobody arrived at CNdP, but were positively surprised by this bottle, as was I. Lovely complex and aged CNdP. Deep ruby, medium+ intensity with aroma’s of cherries, kirsch, garrigue, blackberry, plum, figs, raisins, licorice, stewed black fruit and wet leafs. Medium acidity, perfectly integrated medium+ tannins, high alcohol (but does not negatively affect the experience), full body, medium+ flavor intensity, long finish
A great bottle!

Tremendous sense of variety in place. Absolutely delicious! Just one problem though: Singeing alcohol! The listed 15.5 abv, yes...15.5, showed higher, approaching vintage Port levels. Vintage Port can wear 20 abv well, this femininely styled CdP does not.
Based on this experience, I would drink bottles sooner than later. Beware the burn! Marbled meats, charcuterie, and aged cheeses help tame the flames. 92-93.

Decanted 1.5 hours. Raspberry nose, very nice fruit nose, mixed with leather, game meat, this wine crushes the Saje CDP we had with it. I have a new respect for this wine. Mint, and dark chocolate. Blackberry and leather. Very nice. Nice spiciness, acid is a bit high. This wine may have turned a corner into a really good spot. Hint of tar that gives a bitterness that adds character.

Pruney fruit profile, which normally isn’t going to do it for me, but it’s balanced with great baking spices and enough acidity, plus the fruit has good energy, that it all works.
I do prefer the Clos des Papes in this vintage, and haven’t yet tried others

The score is based on this producer's Chaupin...as good as it gets for Chaupin with a peacock's tail of smoothly delivered CdP aromas and flavor profiles. Bravo!
Drank my first one of these in 2013. Thought holding it a few years would help it mature a bit. Still tastes like a bad Paso Roble wine, or maybe am Apothic.
This was very fruit forward still with tons of blackberry and dark cherries to open, before transitioning to floral notes, garrigue, anise, and leather. High ABV (15.5%). Good balance for the style with a long finish. Still seems very young and I suspect that these will continue to improve over the next 10+ years.

This is a big and beautiful wine and at 10 still very youthful. It is a dark, full purple color that is quite floral on the nose along with some spice and an earth component like garrigue. The nose carries black raspberry and the spiciness smells (and tastes) as if it comes from wood. In the mouth the wine is black - black raspberry and blackberry, concentrated and intense. There is black licorice and also a band of bright red cherry but it’s very narrow. There are some drying tannins and a fruity acidity that carries a lengthy finish. The wine is entirely pleasant with a smooth mouthfeel. This wine should carry for years - it is still improving.

Decanted for 1.5 hours Nice earthiness to the wine, a bit of plum, chalk, black licorice, sour black cherry. Nice acidity. I stand by my last couple reviews. I am not a fan of the weight. It is too light a CDP for my liking.

My last of these. I think I prefer the '10 vintage generally to even the '07. The '10 Rhone vintage is arguably even more impressive than the '10 Bordeaux vintage which I think got over-rated. This wine is rich, decadent but also relaxed and everything in the right place. Has some licorice, thick black fruit, oodles of class and refinement but also hedonistic. A real gem.

Decanted 1 hour. Decanted is the way to go right now.Seems the way to go. The flavors are well integrated. Rose petal, pepper, smoked meat, hint of raspberry tart, dried apple and red berry. Dried prune, a bit of sour cherry, even a hint of turmeric. Weight light. Sharp finish, strong acidity. Good wine, but weight is a bit light for a CdP IMO.

PnP Prune on nose, black pepper, a bit astringent on nose. Smoke, chalkiness, black olives, sophisticated, but might be good to decant. Black licorice and hints of ginger. Cooked meats. Nice, but nothing really compelling from this wine for me. Too much bitter IMO. Maybe it needs more years. Descent wine for price.
In the glass, dark, dense, thick, syrup with some orange on the edges as it has aged. On the nose, Dark berries, some iodine, fatty meat. Far more than I expected from a CDP. On the palette, Slight tannins, medium weight with a long finish. Happy to have seven more bottles.

A good CdP to be sure. However, it has a bit too much front and top of mouth sourness & acidity and insufficient depth of fruit for my taste, hence the moderate rating. This was after decanting and tasting over a few hours and the next day. Not worth the price IMO. I prefer the 2010 Jaume Grand Veneur Les Origines.

Only achieved middle of the pack status in the 2010 CnP Tasting. For the price that is a bit of a disappointment. However, it was still an excellent wine that gave quite some pleasure, overall. I could not identify it in the blind tasting as the only 100% Grenache entry. The smooth and elegant middle and finish seemed to scream blend to me; oh well, wrong again.

This CnP is hot with alcohol. Initially, it was really dominant and made me question my choice in this purchase. After ~2 hours in the decanter, the alcohol calmed down enough for the beauty of this wine to come through. It does have a nice brambly texture and palate, a smooth middle, and a good long finish of fruit, blackberry and a little chocolate. It finished very well, but stumbles a bit right after opening.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #027 Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010 (By JdB): Beautifully ripe red berries and cherries, coffee and garrigue in the bouquet. On the palate beautiful and very juicy dark berries, licorice, laurel, beautiful acidity and round tannin with still a good bite, good bitterness. Harmonious an beautifully balanced wine in its adolescent stage. A future until at least 2025+.

Is great Châteauneuf-du-Pape better than great Gigondas? This Janasse represented exceptionally well, tasted alongside a same vintage Perrin Domaine du Clos des Tourelles, and a Brunel Sabrine CdR thrown in for good measure. This bottle was more open than the one tasted last September. It offered a bouquet of flowers, sweet berries, coco powder, fig cake, spice, kelp, cured meats, charred cork, tar, peat, umami, and coal, the most rustic of the three wines tasted. These essences came forward in complex layers on the palate, the sweeter notes giving way to the more earthy ones as the wine breathed. After three hours, the wine transitioned to a kelp, cured meat, and umami fest, with noticeable veins of smoke and tar. Uniquely balanced, audacious yet sublime, utterly delicious. There is no rush to drink these bottles, however, though densely packed with wondrous goodness, this was more open than the Gigondas, from the outset and throughout the evening.
Overall, though different, the two wines competed equally well, and two of the three fortunate tasters found the Gigondas slightly more appealing, though not 'better' per se. Also, whereas this wine should evolve and last for ten to twelve years, the density of the Gigondas suggested a fifteen plus year maturation curve. 95-96.
Lovely and complex flavors of raspberry liqueur, licorice, charcoal and garrigue. Concentrated, surprisingly firm, with a lively acidic streak to keep the sweet fruit fresh. An excellent wine that promises more in the future.

Decanted for two plus hours and drank over two days, alongside the same vintage Vieilles Vignes. Incredibly appealing bouquet, at once imparting floral, sweet (cacao), spice, and earthy essences. The bouquet made such an impression that tasting the wine proved difficult. Striking richness and remarkable balance, particularly for the alcohol, which seemed negligible. Purple flowers, fig cake, guava paste, spice box (terroir, not oak imparted), seaweed, celery salt, loam and loess dust, minerals, and meatiness throughout. Sleek and sophisticated attack, massive fruit and umami drenched middle, gritty and gripping back and finish.
In sum, a young wine and while the bouquet commands attention the wine needs at least a decade to reveal its many charms. Classy and incredibly sexy! 95-97.

Tasted alongside the 2010 Domaine de la Janasse Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, this wine was not to be outdone. The super dark color is very promising. There is an exuberant nose of dark fruits, uncooked beef, licorice, cloves, and a nice dose of “sweet gaminess.” Medium bodied and supple in the mouth, concentrated kirsch mixes with blueberries, stewed tea, dark chocolate and more cloves. The persistence of these flavors is long and robed in sweet tannins. Delicious, complete and stunning. While it may not make the bones of the Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, this Chaupin does not need to: it is simply wonderful in its own right.

A bunch of CdP on a Saturday Afternoon (Loretta Paganini School fo Cooking): Gets my vote for the biggest wine on the table. I really liked it, but it is not for everyone. The nose has blueberries, black raspberries, black pepper, smoked wood, black licorice and spice. Big and voluptuous. Just thing to start with coming in from the cold. It seems to deep but today it is just a monster and a delicious one at that. Tons of fruit but no heat although I am sure the alcohol is pushing it based on the texture.

Black cherry color to the rim. The nose is freakishly clear and delineated: ripened dark berries, star anise and baking spices, with just a touch of smoked meat. In the mouth, full-bodied, fresh and pure kirsch from front to back. It displays wonderful lift. A sweet, long finish with rounded tannins. And it will get better! I much prefer this to the 2007.

Slightly awkward. The nose is interesting with chocolate, blackberry liqueur, and fresh rasberries. Changes a lot over two days. The palate is clean and fresh with white raspberry, some raw beef and chocolate. I think this will regain weigth and get deeper and fuller, as have other Chaupins for me.
Beautiful fruity (tart) black fruit nose with spices. On the palate overwhelming alcohol, the wine is burning on the tongue. Medium finish. A very good wine but I realy don't now where Bob found his 98 points. Maybe in ten years I will understand?

Zeer donker robijnrood.

Theeachtige taninnes.

A really luxurious CDP, immensely decadent and almost transfixing in its opulence. Once the bottle's open, the wine may seem a bit firm and unyielding but it quickly opens up. Even 20 minutes after opening, pouring from the bottle it shows all it has. I know it's early to be drinking this, but its already showing great. Definitely one of the best if not the best CDP I've had. Impressions are similar to the previous bottle. Am so glad I've more of this..

I accepted a challenge from a forum member to drink this early in its primary stage and rate how much I liked or didn't like. I was very skeptical, but good for my word. I have to say that its stunning the moment you pull the cork and pour into the glass. Lovely aromas of violets a touch of lavender, and the boysenberry, blackberry, black raspberry fruit that is very sweet in the nose. Kirsh liqueur comes to mind as well. It also has a lot of heat, especially as it warms and breathes in the glass. I am so thankful I placed the cork back in the bottle, because as this filled with air more and more, the heat became overwhelming and while the sweetness of the black fruits and kirsch were syill present, but it seemed that the tannins hardened up and it wasn't as impressive as it was from the bottle. Still I was very impressed with the mouth-coating quality, and what acid it actually had which may be a bit low for long term aging. The finish felt like a kiss of oak, tough I don't know if any is used, but the hints of vanilla could be from the strong fruit as well. I think this was very enjoyable, although it lacked the nuances expected with age in the multi juice CdPs. The sweet tannin stays in the mouth and it is a great bottle, but I'm thinking the ABV is at least 19%. Such is life in CdP in warm vintages.
Additional note, if you open consume the majority of the bottle within 2 hours as this really starts to fall apart with air and time. Bitterness and black licorice notes blend in and mixed with the stiffer tannins and sweet fruit and high ABV the wine becomes disjointed. I've seen this with many younger Bdx which not ready to drink. Disjointed would be the appropriate word. This is why I try to let the great wines age a bit if not a decade. 95+ within the first couple of hours, just not liking there after.
Not rated. Too young. 4 hour decant didn't budge this wine. Too bad after all the positive reviews. Very primary and bright for a Cdp. Wait on these. I was really hoping for a great bottle, but will have to wait myself.

Regular dinner group (@ EM): Just a short note. Both the bouquet as the palate show a lot of sweetness of ripe raspberries and good strawberries. There is beautiful acidity, bitterness hidden behind it, but in this stage the lush ripe fruits dominate. Good spiciness (garrigue) as well. How to score it? 93 for the moment seems generous, but correct. Would love to taste this again around 2020. 95+ by then?

Laid back and female at the beginning. I miss a bit 'rusticness'. Very gentle and already ready to drink. After 60-90 minutes decanting the typical Janasse fruit and nose showed up. A very classy wine, however, for 25 € more (59 > 85) I prefer the 2009 Vieilles Vignes as it has a more open nose, a more complex structure and a bigger body. Fortunatley both wines are still availble in my area (Feb 2013). Nevertheless: Excellent to outstanding. I am a big fan of Janasse!
I have heard, that in southern Rhone 2011 and 2012 can not compete to 2007, 2009 and 2010. So I am thinking of buying some more now.
. 95+ pts

La Janasse at The Oxford Wine Circle (Oxford University): This is a definition a finesse in a glass. It has the Chaupin style but is way more classic and universal than its 2009 relative. Awesomely made up and full bodied, this Chaupin would also satisfy the ones looking for delicateness in their Southern Rhone wines. This will hit its prime with age, no doubt about that.

The exuberant nose showed intense, ripe blackberry, cherry and currant fruits along with notes of cinnamon, ginger and clove spice, pencil shavings, lavender and dark yet fresh floral tones. On the palate, it was seamless with a feminien feel, a medium-body and silky tannins that were balanced by juicy acidity. Tart cherry notes intermixed with herbal tones, rich black licorice, and charred meat, which lasted throughout the medium-long finish along with hints of fig and bitters.
Curious of all the rave reviews coming in on this wine, I decided to see what it was all about. While, admittedly a well made wine, I found it to be feminine and without the exuberance of the much better VV. Furthermore there was a touch of heat at the end even though this was served at 17 degrees (63f). My feeling is that this needs time in the cellars to hopefully help resolve these small defects.

One Heck of a Saturday: A near-perfect 2010 Chateauneuf, made from 100% grenache. Wow, the structure and depth of this wine is astonishing. Aromas of cedar, tobacco, anise, black cherries, black pepper and hints of toast. The aromas combine to form a tight fist that will take years to unpack. Very young, with firm tannins and tightly-compacted fruit, but enough acid to make this pleasant to drink. I love the complex fig, tar, herb garden and earth flavors in this wine. An incredibly long finish. I would absolutely love to try this again in 15 years, it's got at least that much time ahead of it. I know Robert Parker and Tanzer swooned over this, but they're on to something here. Superb.
Nose of ripe black fruit, cigar box, sous-bois, hint of alcohol... in the mouth, high acidity, red fresh fruit, average lenght, was also much better after two hours of aeration

Utterly seamless, there isn't an edge to be found anywhere. Great concentration, but still so light on its feet somehow. Am sure it will develop with age but surprisingly so accessible now nonetheless.

Nice nose. Floral and forward nose but less intense vs 2009 Chaupin at this stage. Notes of damped forest floor, underbrush, licorice, dark cherry, vanilla, and a little spicy with hints of oak. This appears to be more structure with higher acidity than 2009 vintage. If 2009 Chaupin is all about finesse and balance, this is all about power and concentration. Label indicated 15.5% which is higher than 2009 vintage and the bottle does have slight heat at finish. At this juncture, I actually prefer 2009 Chaupin but 2010 should last longer than 2009 vintage with enormous concentration and structure. Janasse has produced phenomenal wines over the last 2 vintages. Put on more weight on 2nd day, smooth and silky texture with nice viscosity. Still plenty of fruits and sweet tannins with slight heat at the end. Very little changes on 3rd day, this is one massive Chaupin. 95-98

Dark cherry, smoke, grilled meats with huge mouth feel. Fantastic balance, good acidity and the tannins already very nice on the extremely long finish. I gave this an hour in the decanter, and it was great, but this could end up being a 100 point wine in a few years. If you like CDPs, load up on this gem. You will be very happy in a few years.

Dark red with purple tones (less dark than Mordoree Reine des Bois); highly intense nose of red cherries, vanilla; licorice, chocolate, feisty, somewhat burning taking a bit from an otherwise very good and rich wine; holds good potential with good depth and intensity

Without doubt a super effort! Pure dark mature fruit, orange zest, licorice, garrigue and lovely sun dried strawberry adds to a perfect balance and an integration I normally just dream of. The acidity is brilliant and adds to the overall impression. A slight whiff of heat permeats the end palate, but does not inflict with the pure joy of having this effort in the glass. Length on the finish is about 60+ seconds. Beautiful! (scored blind without proper food 95-96)

Chateauneuf du Pape, France - Tasted at Domaine: Tasted with Isabel Sabon. This wine started off with a bouquet of rich dark fruits, smoke and earth. I was enjoying the aromas so much I didn't want to taste the wine. But I did, and it was wonderful. Deep, concentrated flavors of dark fruits (forward from the youth), bramble, forest floor, minerals, spices. Big, powerful mouth-filling tannins. This is obviously very young. Isabel recommended cellaring up to 10 years before drinking. It should be amazing.

Tasted at the Domaine. This was incorrectly poured first and we thought it was the entry level CdP. With that in mind I put my nose in the glass and was treated to one of the most explosive bursts of raspberry I have smelled in a wine. I was thinking if this was the entry level I cannot wait to see the next wine. Either way this wine was rich powerful and very primary. Utterly delicious and for $60 per bottle at the property a no brainer!

The sample being almost freezing, this wine did not display all its potential. I could guess black berries and very soft tannins as well as an elegant acidity but could not holistically define the wine. At the end of the tasting, I went back to the ‘empty’ glass; it had all the aforementioned characteristic to the 10th power.

Deep ruby, medium+ intensity with aroma’s of cherries, kirsch, garrigue, blackberry, plum, figs, raisins, licorice, stewed black fruit and wet leafs. Medium acidity, perfectly integrated medium+ tannins, high alcohol (but does not negatively affect the experience), full body, medium+ flavor intensity, long finish

Blackberry and leather. Very nice. Nice spiciness, acid is a bit high. This wine may have turned a corner into a really good spot. Hint of tar that gives a bitterness that adds character.

Theeachtige taninnes. Provencaalse kruiden in de lange afdronk.

The acidity is brilliant and adds to the overall impression. A slight whiff of heat permeats the end palate, but does not inflict with the pure joy of having this effort in the glass.
