Smell of gooseberry and lime. Taste of gooseberry, lime and grapefruit, with the slightly bitter sting. Acid is medium. Good long aftertaste. A very good wine. This wine show that some overseas sauvignon blanc can have a longer life than you might think. Kept in a wine fridge since I bought it years ago.

First note in >1 year on this bottling. Doubt if anyone's reading it, however, if you're still holding 2011 Cloudy Bays, open with confidence. Bought this in a bin so very unsure of provenance but worth a shot, and it didn't disappoint. Lost some of the grapefruit and grassiness and actually I pick up a hint of vanilla. Still good juice from a perennial producer

I see I'm the first to taste this wine for about 2 years, so I was worried I'd left it too long. The nose is easily identifiable as sauvignon, though the bottle ageing means that there is no longer the nettles and grassiness usually found on younger wines. Rich and full on the palate, still quite long, went well with smoked trout. No difference between the two bottles opened. So we got this just in time.

While making medallions of monkfish, I needed a white wine for my buerre blanc sauce so I thought I would use something that doesn't drink particularly well. The last few bottles I've tasted were simply undrinkable, but I hoped that cooking off the alcohol and reducing it might show something decent. Unfortunately this wine is awful no matter how you use it. The sauce was too acidic and it had nothing to do with the champagne vinegar. I guess I'll save the remaining bottles to use as anti-freeze in my car this winter. Terrible wine.

Used to be (when David Hohnen owned this mob and Cape Mentelle) one of the world's great white wines, now it seems to be overpriced average cat pee of some quality..

More subtle than most Sauvignon Blancs I've tasted this vintage. Well integrated and balanced but it lacks a bit of complexity, especially at this price point. It seems like a toned down version of a Kim Crawford, Oyster Bay or Villa Maria. I don't know if that's worth over 100% markup.

This is about as bad of a Sauvignon Blanc you can make. Over the top grass notes dominate this with a touch of grapefruit. Short to medium finish and not pleasant.

Primary notes of toast lined with a discernible Marlborough grassiness, almost buttery. Rather muted, no other distinctive characteristics with regards to nose. Nice buttery mouthfeel, akin to a chardonnay. Punchy taste with slight sweetness on the initial, although it transitions unremarkably, and feels rather watered down. Nice smooth finish on the palate, good overall quality...albeit underperforming in certain aspects.

From 75cl screwcap. Oops. Judging by the TNs on CT, some people really don't seem to like this wine. But I find this bottle excellent: a very slender rendition of NZ SB with pungent aromatic typicity; quite generous, sweetish gooseberry entry which slims down to a pure skinny mid-palate; nicely acidic finish. Food-friendly, not a trophy wine. Still one of my NZ benchmarks. Worth 18 EUR retail, a rebuy. 89P

Elegant and supple with a touch of residual sugar on the soft, floral notes of citrus, gooseberries, passion fruit, stonefruit, lime blossom, and green tea. Good acidity and keen limestone minerality on the long finish. Delicate, well-balanced, and seductively appealing.

Cloudy Bay was a revelation back in 1997 when first tasted in a high end restaurant going quickly and comically bust in the company of a fire-starting, policewoman-belting redhead with a brilliant, depressed mind.
Hmn! Times have changed and so has Cloudy Bay. Second of a batch of three, too long in the fridge but like the first leaving little impression at all. Better on day 2 with grapefruit drifting in - still a stretch to claim this had any discernible character.
Perhaps it gained in the 90s from its newness to market and our over-familiarity with Oz chardonnays. Now overtaken by dozens of its countrymen and priced on fond long gone memory.

Currant to white fruit nose with grapefruit, hints of grass, mint/menthol and some woolly to almondy notes. Dry and medium bodied palate with balanced mid-level acidity and an oily touch to the ripe fruit. Grapefruit to kiwi. Brief finish. Not very convincing performance. Might just need more time to build up character. I wouldn't open one in the near future.

Grapefruit and passion fruit nose; very subtle guava and green/asparagus aromas. Give it 30 minutes to breath (and warm up a bit if it's coming straight out of the fridge). Still somewhat restrained for a NZ SB. A rich palate will express itself after about an hour. A decent sauvignon. Drink 2013-2015. A nice match to salmon teriyaki.

HWZ wine lunch on Saturday afternoon (The University Club): Strong nose of pink guava right from the glass with some tropical fruits, subtle but simple. It has good intense entry, again plenty of pink guava and passion fruits on palate and it does not have the usual cut grass note from a Marlborough Sau Blanc. Pretty lacking on the finish but surprisingly it slowly build up to show a decent medium finish.

Clear and shiny pale lemon yellow. Medium intensity nose, mango, grass, lemon peel, hints of asparagus and peas. Intense attack, medium amplitude and evolution, medium body and structure, tasty. Medium-long duration aftertaste of medium high intensity with peach memories. Lacks a bit of elegance, but very well made.

WSET Level 2 Class 3 (BCIT Downtown Campus, Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind. Screw cap. Clear, pale lemon-green. Clean, pronounced nose of green bean, grass, grapefruit, passionfruit, some mineral upon warming in the glass. Palate is dry, high acidity, medium- body, with bold flavours of gooseberry, passionfruit, citrus, very crisp. Medium finish. Good quality, engaging wine... well integrated despite being so bold.

This is a real fading star of a wine. This vintage is nice, but for £25 a bottle I want more than nice. I want interesting, flavoursome, stylish, even just one of these. This has none of them. A real shame. Obviously well made but simply trading off its name.

Nose of citrus, pear and grapefruit. Palate of peach, apple, pear and grapefruit. A good level of sweetness. Nice finish. Went well with shrimp and avocado salad, and angel hair aglio olio. But seems to have a tight sweetspot - needs to be serve well-chilled, and needs to be consumed within 1-2 hours after being opened, otherwise there is a noticeable loss of fruitiness. It was very good when served well, but the tight sweetspot makes it difficult to rate it as outstanding (ie 90+).

From 75cl screwcap. This seems to me to be at one end of a NZ SB continuum from thin, dry, metallic, sharp (this wine) to bosomy, sweetish, Rubenesque (Dog Point). I feel most comfortable somewhere in the middle (e.g. Greywacke). 18€ of modest pleasure, no regrets. Good for at least another year. 87P

Agree with previous speakers; this is clean, classic, grassy and citrusy. Decent longevity with good balance. In Sweden, this is close to SEK 200 (almost USD 30). At this price point, there is quite a bit to choose from, which is at least as interesting.

I wouldn't say classic NZ sauv blanc, more textbook. gooseberry, fresh cut green grass, kiwi, grapefruit. very aromatic. tangy and sharp acids - might be a bit much for most but I love the cut and tactile mouthfeel you feel all the way from entry to midpalate. long finish. works well with a green salad with a tangy vinaigrette and shaved pecorino.

- Greenish color. It's balanced with a light/medium body. Angular texture with a medium finish - Oh, wish I had a platter of raw oysters, but fresh pico de gallo and tortilla chips will have to do. Good wine to sip, on this 100 degree day.Typical SB with good acidity. A bit pricey.

Aware from previous reviews that you either love it or loathe it I found myself thinking what was all the fuss was about - this is Cloudy Bay as I remember it (having not tasted it for a few years) - full on gooseberry nettles and cat's pee on the nose followed by full on grapefruit and lemongrass on the palate - no change there then !

From 75cl screwcap. Penetrating gooseberry scent and entry, with good body and gently balanced, healthy sweetness on the mid-palate. A: Pale lemon- green N:Melon, grapefruit rind, green coconut, JTH gets some soap and bananas too. Youthful nose. P: Slight pétillance, bracing acidity, medium alcohol (13%), long finish. Limes, apples, elder flour white pepper melon and very slight chemical taste. C: Very fruit forward. The chemical taste is not unappealing at this concentration. This wine is dependable. Hadn't met one that JTH and i didn't like.Better than our usual NZ SBs. More concentrated than JTH remembered. Would buy again.

Johannisbeere ist alles was man schmeckt, pur, linear - langweilig... Nachkaufzwang: stark gegen Null.

Clear, pale yellow, watery rim, nice tears. Clean, med intensity, aromatic notes of honeysuckle, pear, green apple, lemon, hay, but missing CB's signature steely-ness. Dry, light bodied, low to med- acidity, med alcohol, no tannins, med - intensity, further tastes of lie, apricots, white peach, and tiny sliver of petroleum. This vintage definitely lacks the punch of its predecessors and the vineyard must have had a warmer than usual growing season. Med - finish - not up to CB standards. Now I shouldn't be surprised a the slightly lower price for it on offer.

Unexciting and indistinguishable from other NZ sauvies at half the price. I seem to recall much more distinctiveness from vintages in the '90s and early '00s. Now we drink a bottle once in a while for sentimental reasons as much as anything.

Expressively fruity nose with pit fruits, and a surprising pear note. Gooseberries and citrus on the vibrant palate. Light mouthfeel; I was hoping for more weight and minerality. A very good example of the mass-market style of NZ SB, but I don't find it to be anything special.

Double decanted for two hours, served chilled. Color: Pale White. Nose: Grass, Grapefruit, Toffee, Pear. Palate: see nose. Finish: Medium. Acidity: Medium. Alcohol: 13.5 % well integrated. Medium bodied mouthfeel with initial pear candy. Mid-palate turns grassy transitioning into a grapefruity finish with underlining toffee. Surprisingly delicate style considering this comes from New Zealand. Acidity and fruit are nicely balanced. Perhaps not my all time favourite NZ SB but a pleasant experience nonetheless. 89-90 points.

This is a juicy vintage from Cloudy Bay. Not quite as elegant as past vintages I've had, but I suspect that I don't normally drink them less than 12 months from harvest. There's quite a noticeable residual sugar on this. The reality of residual sugar on NZ SB is something that people shouldn't be blind to, as it is part of the style. It's pretty pronounced here though. For my taste, this wine actually needs some months to integrate a little better and display some more of the grassy and mineral tones.

Stately in its lemon, white peach, jasmin, goose berry, and salty mineral. A metallic, light gold in colour; the acidity is in check with a fine back palate. Long in the mouth; sweet on the nose. Open for at least an hour or wait a year. Drink 2013 - 2018.

Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Heavy nose of gooseberries, grapefruit and lime. Strong flavor or grapefruit, lime and orange. Medium to tart acidity, light to medium body. Drink now.

Clear light grey/yellow. Lots of lime and guava in the nose on ths first night and crazy acid in the finish. A couple of nights later the nose and flavours become super refined and interesting and flat out delicious. My thoughts are this could age very nicely. Day 1 88, Day 4 92 so let's say 90.

You really can see why England has fallen in love with this wine. WHY?
Let's make it simple from a couple of people drinking this tonight who are not wine nuts: 1. It really is just pleasant and easy to drink. 2. I serve it all the time at dinner parties and nobody complains 3. I just like it - it is nice to drink
So - what can you say about this wine. We can rant on about the colour the notes and the taste - we can compare New World to Old World.
But really these people don't care. Let me say what they say
This is a really pleasant wine to drink .. FULL STOP
I really think we need to learn something here.

Johannisbeere ist alles was man schmeckt, pur, linear - langweilig... Nachkaufzwang: stark gegen Null.

This vintage definitely lacks the punch of its predecessors and the vineyard must have had a warmer than usual growing season. Med - finish - not up to CB standards.

Let's make it simple from a couple of people drinking this tonight who are not wine nuts:
1. It really is just pleasant and easy to drink.
2. I serve it all the time at dinner parties and nobody complains
3. I just like it - it is nice to drink
So - what can you say about this wine. We can rant on about the colour the notes and the taste - we can compare New World to Old World.
But really these people don't care. Let me say what they say
This is a really pleasant wine to drink .. FULL STOP
