To think that 1945 was a long time ago, and that this wine was based th from then and absolutely divine, complex and pristine… well, wow, yes please. We had this wine compared to the 1997 and 1977 of the same. The ‘45 of course dominated but the 1977 was shockingly interesting and clearly enjoyable. For those who do not have a the ‘45, buy the ‘77!!

Tasted non blind. Decanted for roughly 12 hours before serving.
Garnet to light brown in color, fairly clear looking. Nose of ash, burnt sugar, melted black licorice and cassis. Flavors of molasses, brown sugar, candied almonds and dried plums. Medium acidity, full bodied. A tad hot with the alcohol but not off-putting at all. Drink or hold.

2nd time I have been lucky enough to have had this wine. What a treat. Brown with some red tinge. A bit alcoholic on the nose. Some heat on the palate as well but not off putting. This bottle was more advanced than the last. It still had wonderful depth with caramel, chocolate, plum profiles. A very special treat once again.

A Celebration of Jose; 5/19/2022-5/21/2022 (Madison, WI): Clear cola-garnet color. 12 hours in the decanter tamed a bit of heat. This showed nice complexity of chocolate, caramel, prune and raspberry. Very smooth on the palate. Short finish. Overall lighter on fruit with less depth than some previous bottles.

Tasted hastily and late, not much appreciated by the group. A pre-event sample was outstanding to me though. Soft, smooth, resolved but deeply flavorful. Dark plum, prune, raisin, moderately sweet, intriguingly complex. Does VP from a great vintage, great house last forever?

Jamming with Stu (Dune, Fort Lauderdale): A terrific bottle of Port and a great way to end the evening. Very inviting nose, sweet cherry, vanilla. Full-bodied, lush layers of fruit, great balance, resolved tannins and no alcoholic heat of youth. Nice complexity but remarkably fresh. Looong finish. This will drink well for decades and become even more complex over time. Outstanding.

1945 TAYLOR, FLADGATE & YEATMAN VINTAGE PORT- dark ruby colour; the nose was very inviting with sweet red cherry notes which continued on along with a touch of vanilla and cedar laced cranberry; full bodied, layered and long; probably my fav of the flight although they were all winners.

2016 FTLOP Holiday Party (Sammamish, Washington): Amber-brown in color with a clear edge. Very fine sediment in the glass. Toasted marshmallow, cola and some cocoa powder with hints of cinnamon. Sweet, unctuous mouthfeel on the approach with maple and some light red hot notes. Bright acidity, full-bodied with coating mouthfeel. Very long finish.

Escape from the Cold; 2/12/2016-2/15/2016 (Sunny & Warm Florida (Del Ray Beach, Jupiter)): Drank side by side with a 1955 which was kindof an embarrassment of riches. This had been opened and decanted for probably close to 6 hours when we finally got to it. Deep red color (interesting because the '55 was a tawny beauty). Still very young. Wonderful wine.

At the Aberdeen Marina Club Rhone Lunch in Hong Kong - A truly marvellous wine that ranks as one of the best ports I have had the privilege to drink. Great vintage port really does need 50 years and I suspect this will be going strong in another 50! More than enough fruit to balance the alcohol which melded subtly without a hint of harshness or burn. It's unusual for a port to win the accolade of wine of the lunch which this did with ease.

Beautiful dark color. Incredible nose with fresh fruit and a bit of heat. Very thick texture. Palate had lots of cherry fruit with some heat on the backend. Hard to believe this is almost 70 years old. No sign at all of getting tired. This bottle actually came across as it would improve with additional age. Will still be going strong when our children and grandchildren are ready to drink it. Amazing treat.

Taylor Vintage Port Vertical (Los Angeles, California): Always an emotional wine, for the "peace" vintage and for its brown wartime bottle. Perfect dark cherry-garnet color with glints of ruby. Slightly shy but pleasing nose of chocolate, black pepper, and plums. A stronger chocolate note on the palate. Unctuous, rich and mouth-filling. Fine balance, with passing heat and somewhat weak acidity. Perhaps not the freshest of bottles, but still very nice drinking. Oporto bottled, neck fill, 3.5 hours in decanter.

An Affair to Remember: 1851-1994 (Sammamish, Washington): Ruby in color with clearing on the edges. some dusty red fruit on the nose with dusty raspberry, cherry, red currant, and a hint of cinnamon. The entry on the palate was luscious with red fruit and Christmas spice, backed up by tremendously balanced tannins. The long, complex finish provided waves of red fruit and spices.

Anti Bag in Box Dinner: Dark with bricking/browning rim; burned sugar, almonds, extremely complex nose, raisins, dried fruit; more burned sugar, deep fruit, spices, developed in the mouth, medium length. Nose by far the best. My first, and I guess not an optimal bottle.

CT Wisconsin Offline 2; 10/5/2012-10/6/2012 (Madison, WI): Medium-dark cherry-garnet in the middle, to garnet-root beer color at the rim, showing really beautiful clarity and depth of color after decanting for sediment and slow oxidation for several hours. On the nose, the spirit is a bit fumey but never unpleasant, and eventually blew off with time in the glass. Showing warm Christmas spice, praline, raspberry, licorice, and a very clean, minutes-long finish. As near to a perfect Vintage Port as I have tasted. This bottle seems more youthful than mature, with the depth and weight of a wine 25 years younger. Less feminine elegance than some fine Taylor's I've tasted, but more remarkable for its depth and power. From a very clean bottle, neck fill, embossed wax capsule. The next bottle will get a 12 hour decant.

Well, okay. Previously I had tasted every other Taylor from 1934 - 1977, and they all showed one feature in common: readiness to be drunk. Not the 1945. Just absurdly young, its sweetness still juvenile in a kid-candy sort of way. Oh, you can sense the many folds and layers of its rich robe starting to develop, but if this is where it stands after 65 years, it will need another 65 to show its best form. Yet another demonstration of why supernaturalists claim the 1945 vintage was heaven's special gift to a Europe ravaged by war. Indeed 1945 is another "savior" of sorts, but with an opposite message, namely that humanity has much more to live for than to die for. The rating is necessarily tentative. Could easily top out at 99-100.

I've added a couple of extra points for its astounding youthfulness. Served blind at Cafe Boulud, my guess was '63 Fonseca because of its sweetness, depth of color and full flavor. Simply amazing and really delicious.
