Excellent wine that we paired with rack of lamb and drink opposite of a velvet glove from the same vintage. Great fun to see the two side-by-side this wine obviously has great elegance and shows the fruit in a panoply of colors. Still drinking a little primary and will age well.

I read all the notes and decided since I was opening a magnum I would do 5 hours prior to dinner and decant. The nose is spicy red fruit. The palate dark cherry, dark plums, tobacco, tree bark and spice (charmoula is what come to my mind) The finish is moderate to long and smooth. Served with a platter of rotisserie duck, wild rice and creamed spinach and it was an excellent match.

Solid, quite typical and was pinpointed (blinded) as an Hermitage. Pure fruit. Piercing experience. Has this beautiful youthful quality of cold butter over lingonberry jam. Pure syrah with aggressive Syrah bitterness and acidity. Superior balance. Length. Complexity. Typicity.
Woooonderful!
Needs plenty more years, but I don't think I'll be able to provide this for my final bottle (of 9)

A solid Syrah with the build of a gymnastics athlete. A but too much muscle to honour its origin, but nevertheless a beauty. Still young, but on its way.

Still needs more time although it is now starting to open up. After some decanting, the nose, displays notes of camphor, sweet spicy plum and black cherry. Full body palette, medium to high acidity with a nice plum and black cherry taste on a long finish still pretty tight, and I would say needs at least five more years to fully resolve.

Decanted for 1 hour and softened considerably. Still some tannins to resolve but I don’t believe the fruit will hold up. Loads of mixed berries, a bit of violets, loads of black pepper and iron at the outset. About an hour later, there’s even more finesse with the fruit - this is a mid weight Syrah, not an extracted monster the wine critics trip over each other to recommend. Very round, balanced. It’s a solid 90, but I’ve subtracted 1 because the QPR isn’t justified. Would be a good value at $60-75 (tops) but not over $100 CAD.

Red purple colour, pale rim, Spicy nose, fresh raspberries and some cooked fruit, menthol, cardamom. Nice freshness here. Juicy fruit, tannins still quite firm, nuty almond quality. Hasn't quite opened up but from the nose, lots of potential here. Will try again tomorrow. No hurry to drink this, still fresh and firm.

Poured a deep purple/black. Quite muted nose. Rich, dark fruit which came across as very "flat" on the palate. So much so, that we ditched what we had in our glasses and moved on to another wine. Out of curiosity, I pulled the cork on what remained in the bottle 3 days later and was surprised to see that this had come to life and become thoroughly enjoyable. I will hold the rest of my bottles for another 5 years or so. My score reflects the T+3 tasting.

Pop and pour, probably would show a bit better with a short decant. This is now very approachable with a bit of air, acid forward with masculine notes of beef and saddle leather. Really delicious wine.

The last few years have brought this around. With 20 minutes of air, the wine pops with grilled meat, olives, sea salt, herbs, and black fruits. Rich, supple, and full on the palate, there is weight, richness, and plushness in the finish. Drink from 2022-2032.

Medium purple. Sweet blackberries, dark cherries, olive tapenade, iodine and some Mediterranean herbs and mineral notes on the nose. The aromatics were more prominent than the palate where most of the action was on entry. The initial rush of fruit quickly gave way a shortish spicy finish with some pronounced acidity and tannins. Although enjoyable, this showed very young and quite difficult to evaluate. I suspect extended cellaring will provide considerable rewards eventually given the wealth of fruit and structure.

Curiosity got the better of me so I opened my second and last bottle… Color deep purple red vibrant….cork was dark stained…perfect… Nose is better tonight with olive notes, herbs/garrigue, some fruit… On the tongue, dim cherry/raspberry, leather, some spiciness…. Finishes with a weak cherry, bit thin, minerality….underwhelming finish…somewhat drying….hmmm upgrade from previous note but certainly no blockbuster…

Hmmm…somewhat underwhelming… decent enough nose… Decent enough classic Rhône notes but everything seemed weak, Muted, restrained… no power whatsoever… Bottle was stored well…. Not really sure what to think… 1 bottle left to try

There is a lot of powerful clear fruit but also a gentle structure and acidity beneath to hold it altogether in a balanced way. Classic notes of bacon, olives, buttermilk. Still young but definetely a treat now.

EXCELLENT!

1h decanting, fairly heavy sediment, almost black colour, no bricking. On the nose intense blackberries, black pepper salami, raw meat, tar. High acidity grippy tannins, long and fresh tates that pais well with a rare ribeye with herb butter. Will wait 5 more years for next bottle. Excellent with further potential.

Beaucoup de tension, de structure, de longueur. Bouche tendue.

Stevie W. supplied a mag at our Xtremo wine dinner this past week. This was a great wine. Deep ruby color giving off a youthful appearance. Generous nose of black cherries, olives and black pepper. Medium body and intensity. There's a generous amount of blackberry and black cherry fruit here, backed by a solid acidic core. Well-structure wine, very concentrated with some meaty flavors, herbs and minerality. I detected notes of leather, black olives, meat, smoke, and tobacco. I love the very noticeable black pepper flavors. Tannins are noticeable and on the fairly grippy side. Lovely, intense and long finish. Loved this wine! Too bad it was the last we tasted this evening as it would be a star on most occasions.

For me nowhere near the insanely high critics scores. Very modern take, competently made but dont get a sense of the Hermitage terroir. Wheres all the crazy black pepper, raw bloody meat and cooked bacon notes that comes from Syrah here? Blind could be mistaken for anything from a Bdx blend to a modern Rioja/ Ribera. Glossy
This wine still does not do it for me. It should be better, given it's address. It's a vintage thing I believe but combined with the winemaking. Still too much hands on winemaking along with too much extraction and heat. Jam and alcohol, lacking the cool Hermitage Syrah I prefer. This acts more like a Southern Rhône wine made from Zinfandel or perhaps as a California made "wine". No finesse to be found.
Didn’t take notes but I like the Omar’s comment below mentioning the scale and this wine is in the middle of that scale.
I recall liking it a lot, and is a Syrah with lots of complexity.
I opened in the morning at 0800 poured about 125ml into small bottle, and let both stand until 1800 for dinner time. Worked well, drinking very nicely.

Glorious wine! For once, I think the CT drinking window prophesy is telling it as it is - drink this from 2018 to 2040; it has so much power and structure but still a gentle and velvety texture with a great point of balance. If you think great Syrah, personally I think of two extremes, one being sweet blackberries and sweet, grilled beef, the other being the liquid you find in kalamata olive tin cans, raw (bloody) meat and arctic fresh blueberries (they differ very very much from the stuff you buy at your local grocer in the states or in Southern Europe, not to belabor the point but it is all about freshness, acidity and almost herbal overtones). This Syrah I place squarely in the middle, which for me is a good thing. The warm vintage shows with some heat on the nose (sic!) and finish, but the wine is so good and it pairs so well with the grilled dry aged whole piece of fine striploin that we grilled for new year's eve that it actually does not detract. I have no more of this vintage, but did buy 2016, which will have to wait for two decades this time, to see what this great wine can deliver with serious age.

2+ hours of air in glass container. Drank over the next 2 hours. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of blackberries, black cherries, black pepper, black olives, stony minerality. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackberries, black cherries, leather, freshly killed animal meat, black olive, stony minerality, smoke and tobacco ash. Very long finish. Very good quality. Young stage of development now. Bright promising future ahead.

I purchased this bottle on New Year's Eve 2011 for $80 from Zachy's and was so glad I waited until Xmas 2019 to open it. It was in such fine form: a very complete and fully integrated wine (between the dark fruit, non-fruit flavor elements, alcohol and tannins)—very seamless. I wish I had another bottle or two. A beautiful expression of Hermitage, my only qualm being that perhaps it's a little bit 'over-polished'.

This wine is very young - needs a lot of air (2hr + decant). Once it is aerated, this wine sings
Great red fruit on the front that melts in to a smooth peppery finish. But of bacon fat / animal fat smattered in. Will be a fantastic wine in 10 years

Dark wine brooding one with camphor, blackberries, dark plums on the palate. Very well made and a long finish. The nose was reticent at first and it wasn’t as expressive as the palate. Hopefully more bottle age will change this.

Hyper long et bien équilibré.

2009 Delas Freres Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes was powerful, ripe and full-bodied with loads of dark fruits. It had bitterness in the finish first poured out of the bottle, which could be softened by an extended 4-hour decant.
The Hermitage rouge was clear deep purple with noticeable amber rim and lots of fine sediments. The nose was complex, ripe and pronounced with ripe blackberry, dried prune and figs, followed by graphite, coffee and a touch of peppered beef. It was dry, spicy, powerful, full-bodied, high level of tannin and acidity and an incredibly long finish.

Almost perfect wine. Such fruit density and such fine tannins makes it close to perfection. Pure blueberry, blackberry notes with hints of beef stock, black pepper and earthy minerality. Great value, especially if bought on release. Happy to have another bottle, but I will pop it after 5-10 years at least to get more mature notes. I hope I will see more meaty and peppery wine with the very same density it has today.

Dark yet clear Ruby color. Lovely nose, of rich sweet almost jammy fruit to start; raspberry and a little bit of plum - surprisingly sweet and intense considering it’s age - that develops nicely over the next hour, to reveal more interesting nose of a deeper spice and a hint of vanilla. Alsmost a bit of jasmine way in the background? To start still quite tannic a palette that does roundnout over time. Quite long, with a rich mid palette and a little dry tanic dust at the end. A good wine that feels like it has some way to go and will potentially be smoother on the palette in a few years; but will it loose its rich fresh fruit? Will be interesting to watch. Certainly a wine worth following.

At least 95, perhaps more. Hard to breakdown, but so good right now. Starting to enter a secondary phase but still youthful, fruity and the tannins are not harsh or bitter. My bet is peak in 2 years. But it is not a crime to drink it now. Going on the net now to find more!
Excellent.

Rock’n on night 1 as pop and pour. More subdued on night 2. Great aromatics with some pepper, bacon, and an orange zest giving it lift. Papa lye was polished and refined, deep fruit, fine subtle tannins. Nice hang on the finish. Approachable, but probably still has plenty of upside. Not a bottling I’ve had before.

Not mature, but definitely ready to go the fruit shows a beautiful cherry note, with loads of smoke, thyme, pepper and earth, full bodied, amazingly soft for a young Hermitage, give it an hour or two in the decanter before imbibing.

Rich red fruit on the nose, that after an hour revealed some nice white pepper spice. Palette still quite tannic to start with, but smoothed out after a while to reveal a good mid length of red fruit, and typical Syrah warmth. Liked this once it had rounded out, and the nose was particularly good once it had opened.

This has improved a bit from when I last had it - more classy, focused and distinctive. The quality here is obvious and abundant. This northern Rhone is an interesting counterpoint of focus to the more broad and wild range of flavor I typically get with CDP and other Southern Rhones.

Decanted briefly and served. Beautiful wine that showed better and better over three hours. Really needed 2.5 hour decant to blossom into a full-bodied debutante and for the nose to open up into a pastille. Long finish from the beginning, but severe minerality gave way to sweet acid, hoi sin and crushed rock. Long life ahead and upside according to JD.

This improved significantly on the 2nd day. This is a dark, hard brooding with without much if any sweetness to it. It's impressive in many ways but some may find it a bit austere. On the 2nd day, this really opened up though, showing a more laid-back and resolved profile.

The nose is all but pleasant. Some smoke and warm fruit, along with some unpleasant alcohol shows. This is not a flawed bottle, simply a matter of a less good wine, from a less good vintage and a less good producer. Palate shows a really sweet and heavy, yet somewhat whimpy and girlish/sissy, clumsy, extracted, sweet, overdone and over ripe Hermitage. Missing any prominent signs of its origin and any signs of higher quality and winemaking. Very disappointing I must say. Extended airing did not help, nor was it any better the day after. Yet another proof of how a vintage can affect a wine, but also that you should stay with top producers, in order not to be disappointed. I was expecting much more from this bottle. Just had to pour out a corked bottle of Paleo 1998, but I must say that I rather would have drunk that than this. I unfortunately have another bottle in my cellar…

Celebration of Syrah (Roswell, GA): Brighter dark magenta; expressive nose, floral though not violets, fresh fruit, juicy, blueberries, raspberries, deeper mineral, smoky; lower acid, good grip, mouth filling, young and showing little development, rather sweet and New World-like at the present.

Big, dense, fruity Syrah. Very good structure promises future development. Decanted one hour; opened steadily for 45+ minutes thereafter, and could have continued. Too young and also in a sleepy phase. The decant helped bring it around after about an hour but it was not at its best, could easily go 95 when it's open for business. Some meaty notes, with elegant red fruits, and oak that was fairly well integrated. 94-97 when it comes around?

Dark, deep ruby. Powerful bouquet and deep fruit flavors. Acid balance supports the frame, and finishes with good tannins. After getting past the aggressive young fruit, the acidity and structure suggest to me this will age well. Adds complexity with air time. Very nice young Hermitage. Needs time.

Red fruits and meat dominate. Medium plus acidity and medium body. Overall it's well balanced and silky smooth with a long life ahead of it. I honestly don't know where the high 90 point scores come from as it just wasn't complex enough for me to be rated that high, but it's really well made and very enjoyable.

Decanted for six hours and it was not even close to long enough. Six days would have been better. Or maybe the DeLorean directed to 2034. Lactic nose, vegetal, a bit too much alcohol, black fruit, licorice, hint of vegetal... relatively hard tannins, underlying fruit... is this a representative bottle or is it in a closed phase???
Very young and still needs a lot of time to come around. Right now drinking lovely after about 8 hours in a decanter. Surprisingly gentle with a long finish. Gravel, graphite, slight spice, smoke, and firm acidity marks the bottle at this point, but is sure to continue to open more and develop in the bottle

World Class Syrahs Offline (Edina, MN): purple red color. 4hr decant, drank 1 glass over 3 hours. Obviously this is ridiculously young, interesting nonetheless to experience at this point. Nose is tight, very green, aromatic, black fruits, after a while shows hints of a sweet ripe fruits. The palate does show some non-descript dense jammy red and black fruit, still overtly green, glycerin, grippy tannins. It is hard to evaluate this wine currently, it is not in a good place. It reeks of a green and vegetal aromatics right now. I suspect that with time this will settle and integrate. Tonight i would not give this 90 points, score is based on potential to improve over time: hence the 90(?)pt score. But I am not convinced it will exceed that level. Only time will tell.

With a 4 hour decant plus 2-3 hours in the glass, this was not showing well. Too young, I don't know what to make of it. If I had to score this tonight, it wouldn't be pretty.

One of the best wines at this price point I have encountered in a long time. Bursting with harmonic dark and red fruit flavors, with a touch of pepper and pie spice. Very satisfying now and promising even more nuanced enjoyment in years to come

Once again a beautiful bottle of Hermitage, silky smooth, well balanced and simply delicious! Nice nose of black cherries with violets, smoked meat and some nice herbs. This is quite fragrant but also very pleasing & delicate! The Palate shows well balanced & smooth flavors with very silky tannins, some pepper and venison meat to show a nice complexity, this is very long and complex with a nice "drinkability" factor...the bottle is empty before you know it. Very surprised on how smooth this is for it's young age, will only get better with age...if I can hold off finishing the remaining 16 bottles within the coming year or so!!! For the price point of this noteworthy appellation...it's a bargain plain and simple and worth seeking for. EXCELLENT WINE! (0 views)

PHMG WAG: the '09 Northern Rhones (Casa Lyon): My WOTN, this was the biggest and most tannic of 8 reds. Glorious nose of dark fruit, minerals, anise, a floral hit, and sangre de toro. Very deep and complex on the palate. Needs another 3-5 years!

Beltramo's Northern Rhone Tasting: Almost too young to evaluate, but it did soften a bit in the glass. The tannins are neither grainy or chalky, rather, they provide an earthy foundation and total saturation to the flavors of plum, pumice and lavender. 92??

Somewhat closed at first, but opened up nicely within an hour to show a more open nose of iron, beef blood and licorice. Full bodied, tannic and quite warm, as is probably to expect for the vintage, but there´s enough acid to make it harmonious and balanced, and the oak is very well integrated. Concentrated fruit with a palate that for me is more reminiscent of a southern Rhone wine at the moment, with game, blood, blueberries and dark plum. Long aftertaste.

93 + pts

Curiosity got the better of me so I opened my second and last bottle…
Color deep purple red vibrant….cork was dark stained…perfect…
Nose is better tonight with olive notes, herbs/garrigue, some fruit…
On the tongue, dim cherry/raspberry, leather, some spiciness….
Finishes with a weak cherry, bit thin, minerality….underwhelming finish…somewhat drying….hmmm upgrade from previous note but certainly no blockbuster…

Dark and beautiful Syrah with an extremely youthful expression.
Taste: this is severely tannic with beautiful Syrah expressions exploding in my mouth. A cold expression with beautiful acids and length.
Extremely young (the opposite of easy-drinking) and needs many more years on its back. 95 for now, with a great upside for the future.

Stevie W. supplied a mag at our Xtremo wine dinner this past week.

Big, dense, fruity Syrah. Very good structure promises future development. Decanted one hour; opened steadily for 45+ minutes thereafter, and could have continued. Currently somewhat subdued, deep red and black fruit that mask most of the tannins. A mouthfull, but fun to drink. Young. Enjoyable now but much better with time.

Concentrated fruit with a palate that for me is more reminiscent of a southern Rhone wine at the moment, with game, blood, blueberries and dark plum. Long aftertaste.

Quel beau nez!
