Pop and pour into a decanter - mold cap underneath the capsule, but otherwise in good condition. In the glass, purple/auburn at the rim, shading to a dark, almost-black purple at the core. On the nose, cassis, mint, and oxidative notes of port and prune, the latter of which blew off after 30 minutes or so. On the palate, the aged notes of mint and cedar present themselves in more assertive fashion, but currants, kirsch, and smoky grilled meat lead the way. Best showing of our bottles thus far, albeit still well short of expectations.

16 Mature Bordeaux Magnums 1945/47/55/59 (+Unico): Double blind flight with three random magnums produced a completely unexpected winner. While the Vega Sicila Unico was corked, the Palmer 1945 (91 pts) was a bit past its peak. An intoxicating aroma profile dominated by malty notes and black tea on the positive side, a crumbling structural frame and some faint unwanted soy notes which sadly got more pronounced with time on the negative side. First place for the Swiss Merlot Vinattieri from 1986 (95 pts). Elegance, a beautiful fruit core, minty freshness - a seamless experience from start to finish.
TN: Badly corked.
Decanting: Double decanted 3+ hours before the tasting.

A 20 year old Red Burgundy? Sure. But not five decades of aging. This wine was in bloom on the evening -- rich, complex nose of dried figs and red cherries. The 1968 Vega Sicilia Unico is the most complex and profound Vega Sicilia I have ever had. I would have guessed it was 20 years old if served blind, and the ageability is one of the greatest qualities of Vega Sicilia.
Intense dark fruits and savoury barnyard. Very inky and super rich with extraordinary depth and ripe fruits. Extremely dense and youthful. Darkest shade of dark fruits, black tea and cigar box. Very tight with firm tannins. This wine certainly has a long life ahead. Stunning!

Dark purple with red hues, bricking, fading color, decent stain; sweet herbal note, sweet and sour red fruit cherry syrup, licorice, sweet raisins, brown sauce, glycerin, eucalyptus and clay notes. This showed so fresh I thought it was a '99 CdP. Unbelievably great shape and youthful, but seemed rather straight forward despite notes above. Re-tasted and seemed to get more complexity. Dark ruby almost black. Like syrup in the glass with healthy legs. Cork was 3/4 of the way wet. Great nose that kept developing in the glass and long delicious finish. This was my oldest wine that I drank that was still good.

A fantastic bottle of legendary wine. Opened bottle for a couple hours before consuming. Deep dark purple in color. A spectrum of flavors and profiles - red fruits, blue fruits, black fruits, plums, charcoal and ash, sauvage and so much more. Very well built and drinking as if its got plenty of time left. Have had older Unico's and they really seem to age gracefully. This was no exception.

An incredible birthday dinner: Light nose with toast, cherry, red berries and some forest floor. More flavour intensity and interest in the palate, there is a step up in richness and presence that matches the reputation of this vintage more closely. Lovely balance and texture, flowing into a very good length finish. If the nose was a bit more expressive this would have been superb.

A later release bottle. Ripe and showing a good amount of wood. Clearly in need of more time, but even with time not an auspicious current set of characteristics. I enjoy more developed examples of this, so difficult to explain. Not among my best encounters with this wine. 91+

Celebrating my 50th birthday (again): Here, no question the Durand was going to be needed. Capsule removal revealed a moldy cork, but not a complete mold cap, which would have made me happier. As the cork came out, the first whiff was not reassuring - totally oxidized. A quick sip didn't help; my first impression was of over-the-hill sherry. A couple of hours later, I was surprised to find that the aromatics on this bottle were indistinguishable from the first, although the palate hadn't improved much - still tired, flat, and with a vinegary tang. Made the call not to serve this, and instead left it in the cellar overnight. We'll see if anything good happens overnight, but I can't say I'm optimistic...
24 hours later: to my surprise, this seems to have returned to life, if only partially. The tang is nearly gone, and some fruit is now emerging, if muted, and the cedar note is a bit more present, all of which makes this drinkable, if not great. At this point, it's an educational experience, so let's go for another day....
Celebrating my 50th birthday (again): The cork on this bottle was sound for the first quarter inch, but the second quarter inch was enough to make me happy I opted for the Durand. A little funk and some oxidative notes on opening, but those blew off after a few minutes. Having no experience with this wine, I decided to slow-ox for a few hours, decant for a couple more, and check in on it periodically. In the glass, amber/auburn at the rim, shading to a core of darker red at the center; definitely a wine with some years on it, but looked more like 20 years than 50. Aromatically intriguing, with cedar, damp moss, cognac, and iron/blood all in the mix. A first quick sip was ambiguous - the aged notes were present, but a lack of fruit and a slight tang on the back palate gave me concern. A couple of hours later, the tang receded, and after the decant, it was gone entirely. The palate was just as complex as the nose - easy to appreciate intellectually, but tougher to simply sit and enjoy? I'd guess this bottle was not performing at the level other tasters here have reported.

Wow - just beautiful! Lots of dark berries and cherries, very fruity and mouthwatering, tannins still present but nicely integrated. Feels way younger than 50 years - simply astonishing.
Well what should I say of a wine whose top 10 vintages with the exception of the 1970 I have had the privilege to taste? What do I say of a wine that I have admired and described as the Chateau Latour of Spain? Well, when I first decanted, I was disappointed with the palate although the nose was flabbergasting. Light crimson and evolved in color, this wine started off as Burgundian in style albeit with the typical caramel, mocha, and blue and black berry aromas typical of maturing Vega Unicos. On the palate however, utter disappointment; the first hour I kept expecting more and sadly nothing happened. Just an average grand cru wine. I was beginning to believe some of the not so favorable reviews that some of my fellow Cellar Trackers had written. Then, after a couple of hours in the decanter, the wine had been reborn, transformed, gaining in power and complexity, completely balancing the acidity - which by the way is still there after 50 years! Typical velvet, coating the mid palate with wave after wave of black and blue fruits, mocha, caramel, plums and spice but in such a complex, delightful and refined structure the likes I have rarely seen. And the finish an endless caress to the back palate. Wow, truly amazing. For all you Cellar Trackers out there with bottles of this beauty, decant for two hours or more to experience the utter delights of this fabulous wine.
Had this iconic 50 year old wine to celebrate my birth year. As this wine was opened and decanted, and metamorphasized over an hour or so, it flirted with perfection...alas, it was a perfect wine to me, in this moment. Fantastic earthy notes and flavors like tobacco leaf and old leather chairs, beautifully supported by tart red cherry pit, plum, and fig, with resolved tannins, gorgeously lifted acidity, and a forever finish. I bought 3 bottles to drink this year. 2 to go.
clearly 100 P. unbelievable that a wine from 1968 is so beautiful - full of life- tremendous fruit - i thought, this is 10 years old- very fruit driven- a nose to die for - for me it´s the fact, that the 1968 is the best of all time in this century - WOTN -

Considered a great vintage of Unico but I've always thought it was somewhat overrated and tonight would confirm that. Higher acidity than the surrounding wines and it suffered up against two incredible wines; '71 Grange and '61 Latour A Pomerol. Showing quite mature flavors of black prunes and exotic spices, it never quite came together enough to compete in this company but still obviously a very fine wine.

Fairly reticent on the nose but with strong color. Just tight and a bit unforgiving tonight but with a little coaxing I can taste a core of dark fruits and inner mouth perfume. This is more Burgundy versus the '70 which is more Bordeaux. The finish is a bit tight but with beautiful notes of spice and minerals. In the end, this bottle just wasn't expressive enough for me to compete with the best vintages we drank.

Blackberry and plum on the nose, with hints of sweet spice and black pepper. Smooth on the palate. Fell short of the '70 on this evening. May require another decade of further evolution. Served without a decant, consumed over 1.5 hours. 96+

Lush, round, dense and rich, this exotic, powerful, intense wine builds with layer after layer of ripe black cherries, smoke, earth and spice. We had a trio of Unico - 62. 68, and 70. Notes: The 1962 (bottle # 50459) was a very good bottle from a case with lots of variability. The fruit was less forward than the others, but what was there was terrific. A great showing. The 1968 kicked it up a notch. There was a bit of back and forth between 62 and 68 - both were terrific and call it a draw. Then the 1970 arrived. Wow, what a full palate. Fresh. Its really the great Unico that people talk about when they talk 1970. Consensus best of flight. All of these were purchased in Europe 15+ years ago, and the provenance showed. Great showing, reminds me why I fell in love with Unico back in the day.

Manuel Chavez sent a glass of this wine over to our table tonight at Boca. I can't really score this amazing wine. It was pure silk and class, with lots of secondary flavors and surprising vivacity for such an aged wine. Never had anything like it. In a class of its own.

An amazing wine. The last bottle I had was slightly off but this was perfect. Very strong floral notes(rose and lavender) with a nice mix of earthy flavors. While drinking beautifully now this wine has many years ahead of it. When you look at the color it's hard to believe it's a 1968.

An incredible bottle and one of the most unique I've ever tasted. Dark dark purple black colour with crimson hues on the rim.Stunning aromatics. The nose and colour of the wine would place it at 5 years of age, MAX! Dark brooding nose of dark fruits(Plums, dark cherries), licorice, roses, cedar and over time, caramel notes. The palate was seamless, suave and velvety. Everything is in its place. No signs of aging for a 42 years old wine. How incredible is that! Every sip you took introduced different taste sensations and this changes over the course of the 4-5 hours we had the wine in our glasses. Very good acidity which will bode well for its next 20 to 25 years of longetivity. Long long finish that went on forever. Ok to drink but will improve. Fantastic.

Started out with a really impressive, classy dark fruit profile. Some old Hermitage like spicy notes and dark fruits, but with a firm acidic streak and heady volatile quality. Finishes more red with very few seams. Perfect opening. Well resolved. Faded somewhat with time; still a beautiful nose but some sharp acidity picking up. Still, a special wine.

Exceptionally vivid wine. Despite its age and smoothness, still fair amount of tannins and youth. Once again a very special experience to be cherished dearly. Nevertheless, the first tasting was more impressive and discerning. Wine may have reached its peak and be on the way down. Drink now until 2012

Medium red with very little bricking at the edges -- still looks very young. The nose of roses and meat was amazing -- I could smell it from three feet away while it was being poured into the decanted. On the palate, many flavors the vanilla and soft oak being prominent. Perfectly integrated with soft tannins. The finish lingers but in a slightly thin way, which is all I'd really change if I could.

Ripe and dense with extraordinary depth. The virtually perfect nose has it all: ripe dark fruit, subtle earth, leather, licorice, spice, and soft integrated oak elements. Classy, powerful, and completely balanced on the palate with incredible purity and richness. This tastes more like an 89/90 Bordeaux than anything from 1968. Mature yet incredibly fresh and youthful. An absolute masterpiece.

Pre-Harlan Warm-up at Brad England's House: My second time trying this wine (thanks Brad!). Looks far younger than its age. On the nose this gives black fruit with a strong minerality. Minneapolis Dinner and Tasting - Chateauneuf, Bordeaux, and Burgundy (mainly) (J.P.'s in Minneapolis): Same bottle (MAG) as Siggy's TN... This was a remarkable wine that instantly had everyone at the table on the edge of their seats, lifting their glasses to toast this amazing wine - and Brad & Diane's generosity in sharing it with us. For me, this had a mind-blowing nose of earth, meat, leather, dried fruit, and a hint of sous-bois. It had the feel of a great old Bordeaux, yet some of the gutsy animal characteristics that almost recall the best of the Rhone, at maturity. The balance was extraordinary, and the mouthfeel sinfully velvety. What a wine. For me, clearly one of the more memorable wine experiences I have had. So briefly into 2006, and already two possible wines of the year - this and the stupendous '82 Latour...

Been waiting to try this wine for close to two years now. Got fed up waiting and opened a bottle last night. I guess I had high expectations, but also kind of knew what to expect. I was not disappointed, but was also not surprised. On to my notes.
Lovely dark Red. Color seems a lot more youthful than I expected from a 37 year old wine. Some fading around the rim, but no where close to where one would expect. The cork by the way was only half wet.. top part was 100% dry, and the entire cork was in perfect condition. This looked and was a perfect bottle. I actually looked at the bottle’s label a few times while I uncorked it just to make sure I didn’t open one of my 90s.. it looked too good. I know they didn’t release this bottle 30 years ago.. but still.
Very interesting aromas, and truly not what I expected. Loads of resins, some coffee, and aromas that resembled port in a way. I loved it. Very strong and sweet and incredibly appealing. Very distinctive aromas that is for sure, so much so, I am pretty sure I would be able to identify this wine in a blind tasting.
Full body with masses of fruitiness, that follow the “theme” presented through the aromas – loads of resins, coffee, some pepper but also masses of cherries. Fantastic and refreshing acidity, which in my opinion added a lot to the overall feel you get from this wine. Tasty smoky oak in the background, with integrated tannins, that though soft, seem as if they could use more time to soften further. They were a touch too noticeable at times, but then again, I tend to look for tannins a bit too much sometimes. Which brings up the issue of the wine’s maturity – it isn’t at its peak, and in my opinion, should be left alone at least till 2010. It does feel “old”, but also feels as if it needs more time to develop, and in times you wonder if this really is a 37 year old wine. I was somewhat surprised, but also very happy – as the idea of being able to enjoy this gem even at its 50th birthday, excites me greatly.
Very big and tasty finish, leaving you with a lovely somewhat sweet aftertaste. Overall, I loved this wine, and even after four hours (we really enjoyed this one slowly.. I felt that big sips are a waste.. so we dragged it out as much as possible) it was still kicking. It is a complex wine, that offers an unusual array of aromas and flavors, which at times did not resemble the usual Spanish theme I am used to (though I am more experienced with 94+ so I guess that makes sense).
With all that is said, this is not a 100 point wine to me. Something was missing, though I can’t seem to point my finger at it. I wasn’t “wowed” if you know what I mean.. but I was very impressed, and I am thankful I have two more bottles to enjoy in the future. 97/100.

Dark red in the glass. Very closed on the nose. I had this wine in the glass for a good two hours and it never opened up. At best, notes of fresh sea breeze and perhaps asphalt could be picked out. Quite lively in the mouth, with a somewhat narrow mouthfeel and structure. It was a bit hard to be pick out flavour nuances, and the finish turned a hair bitter. But overall it was more than a pleasant drink. (from magnum)

48 hours later: dead. So it goes.

2 to go.

We had a trio of Unico - 62. 68, and 70. Notes:
The 1962 (bottle # 50459) was a very good bottle from a case with lots of variability.

Fantastic.
