Nice Brunello. Dark cherry and earth tones. Soft tannins. Did not decant and good out of the bottle though did continue to improve in the glass. I do think this is at the end of its drinking window and I would not hold much longer.

My second time tasting an Altero Brunello. I decanted and strained, no sediment in this bottle. After several hours I began sipping. The 2007 has no tannin, however the wine fell flat. The fruit disappeared along with the tannin's. A really dull wine and not nearly as impressive as the 2017. Is it worth $80 a bottle? No sir!

Last bottle of 3 and this was clearly the best. This has mellowed out pretty nicely. No traces of oak (which was noted previously) and the tannins are quite mild. Still lots of racy fruit and good acidity. This no longer comes across as modern and powerful as it once did, and now pairs better with a wider variety of food. It was drinking very smoothly and with a nice mouthfeel. The complexity is modest, which is the only thing it lacks to really be great. I'm sure this would hold for 2-3 more years, but I don't see any further benefit to waiting. So I would drink up if I had any more. QPR at $70 was just solid.

A better bottle than the last one I opened -- less muted. Took around an hour to unwind a bit. Somewhat rustic nose with tobacco and mint, and cherry fruit joining on the palate. Acid makes this a better wine with food. Small quantity of sediment in the last few ounces.

Really lovely wine with lots of well integrated fruit. Decanted and filtered to remove any solids. There were some, but not enough to seriously clog the filter. Opened up almost immediately and was a joy all evening. Vac-u-vined the remainder and when back five days later to find that the wine was actually better! This is a fully developed Brunello, but not a monster or a fruit bomb. Everything is well proportioned.

While the wine smelled and tasted correct - somewhat spicy dark red-fruited nose with dark cherry on the palate - it overall felt muted, astringent, and far more restrained than I would have expected. Wondering if this bottle was slightly off...

Mature with tobacco, leather, liquorice, warm, dry herbs and pine needles. Dark, sweet fruit with dark cherries, plum and hints of strawberries. Some mint and resin. On the palate soft and sweet with medium acids, earthy minerals and almost fully resolved tannins. Good grip and concentration. Good lenght. Could have been more complex but drinking very well.

Deep purple color. Lots of fruit on the nose along with tobacco and mushroom. Medium body, medium-to-medium-plus acid, well integrated tannins. Sappy dark red fruit, with some really delicious almost jammy raspberries on the very front of the palate. Good depth through a savory mid-palate. Wonderful.

30 minute decant (not enough). Varnish dissipating with time. Well structured, long, dark fruit, tannic. Nice but not complex. I would hold but question is whether tannins will integrate or outlast fruit

On the nose very volatile with paint and varnish dominating. Fruit is dark, with dark cherries, cherry pits and even hints of plum. Quite structured with still quite a lot of tannin. Earthy minerals with iron and mud. Good lenght.
Very nice, if a bit atypic with that very strong varnish.

Consistent with previous notes. This drank very nicely both with and without food. At $70, the QPR was not that great, but it is a nice wine. One left. This will drink well for 4-5 more years easily.

Atsa Lotsa Brunello! Zoom Tasting: This week's Zoom tasting featured Italian Brunello's. The wines were double decanted at around 4:00 to remove sediment, poured into glass jars and sealed for transport at 4:30, and poured into glasses at 6:30 for consumption. The wines were served single blind format (knew all the wines in the line-up, but not which wine was in the glass) and as follows:
- 2003 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova - 2007 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Altero - 2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino - 2010 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova - 2012 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino - 2013 Azienda Agricola Le Ragnaie - 2015 00 Wines Chardonnay VGW (Starter wine)
All wines were ranked blindly. The group's top 3 wines were as follows: (1) 2012 Altesino; (2) 2010 Valdicava; and the 2003 Casanova di Neri. My rankings were slightly different. I ranked as follows: (1) 2003 Casanova; (2) 2010 Valdicava; (3) 2010 Casanova; (4) 2012 Altesino; (5) 2007 Poggio Antico BdM Altero; and (6) 2013 Azienda Agricola Le Ragnaie. All wines were very good, except the 2013 Azienda Agricola Le Ragnaie wasn't really in my wheelhouse. I also was not too crazy with the 00 Chardonnay.
2007 Poggio Antico BdM Altero - My number 5 pick in an outstanding group! This wine showed nice fruit on the nose with some earthiness and grilled meat on the nose. The palate showed gobs of black and red fruit with a hint of sweetness. It also showed some herbs and toasted oak on the palate. Very nicely integrated fruit, but still a little on the acidic side. I thought this was one of the 2010 wines (actually chose it as the Valdicava). Finish was nice, but a little short on this bottle. Seems to still have quite a bit of life left it based on the fruit and acidity. A very good wine and I scored it a 91+, with potential to add a point or two in the future.

A stunning Brunello! Ruby red, nose a bit restrained, but drinks beautifully, smooth, elegant, opulent, very juicy, mouthwatering acidity, dark fruits, cranberry juice, prune, medium to full body, balanced, meaty, a touch of earth, minerals, silky tannins, lovely finish.

Tight and slightly astringent at open. Opened up and softened after a double decant. Nice nose, lovely palate with dark fruit notes and some savory notes. Some wood notes detract a bit, but a full and rich wine that works great with a full flavored meal. Time left.

A modernist Brunello, aged for 2 years in French 500-liter tonneaux and 2 years in bottles before release (as opposed to the traditional style of the house, aging 3 years in large botti casks and 1 year in bottles). 13,5% alcohol.
Almost fully opaque, blackish-red color with a developed maroon hue. Pungent, tertiary nose with aromas of soy sauce, some beef jerky, a little bit of raisiny dark fruit, light smoky tones and a hint of gamey meat. The wine is moderately full-bodied, textural and quite developed on the palate with rather tertiary flavors of smoke, soy sauce, some raisiny fruit, a sweet hint of dried dates and a touch of mocha latte. The wine is still impressively structured with its rather high acidity and moderately grippy tannins. The finish is ripe, developed and quite tannic with long, tertiary flavors of raisins, sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of extracted woody bitterness, a sweet hint of dried dates and a touch of soy sauce.
An impressively structured Brunello with the fruit on the quite tertiary, faded side. Most likely this must have been a badly kept bottle, since a Brunello shouldn't feel this evolved at the age of 12½ years. I suspect this has been kept in room temperature for quite some time. The structure shows that there is quite a bit of potential for future development here, but based on the evolved fruit it's hard to assess the true potential fully. Leaving the wine unrated, since this definitely wasn't supposed to be this evolved.

Decanted for 2-3 hrs then re-bottled to bring to restaurant. Don't remember the nose, but the taste was nice up front and mid-palate with cherry, cedar and leather notes, however it finished a little acidic. Once we had some food to enjoy with the wine, the acidity felt normal and the enjoyability went up another notch. Great wine and in a nice spot if you decant a few hours. May be near peak, but no rush. Drink until 2024

It’s been 3 full years since our last bottle and this wine has come a long way. It was a pleasure to enjoy. However it needs time, minimum of an hour, after 2 hours it started to shine. And soon there was none.
Initially I was concerned that this would be one closed, dark fruit, oaked tannic disappointment. However quickly there were hints of dark cherry, spice and leather with a slightly tannic oak finish. At just over an hour the wine became much more polished, smooth and enjoyable. Just what you would expect of a modern Brunello.
At about the 2 hour mark I wished this was a magnum. Real smooth, polished, cherry dark fruit and more. With a memorable finish and hints of where this wine can go with a few more years or more to settle down. I have found these wines are built to age, 10 to 15 years is almost nothing.

The wine opened with red tree fruits, smoky and leather on the nose and consistent on palate, the tannin shows towards the end. in many ways it is reminiscent of a great Burgundy. After about 45mins+ air in the glass, the wine changed significantly with fruits fading away, replaced with truffle, earth and strong spice. new oak shows in the background. The finish is savory. I liked the first version of this wine. After airing, the spice of this wine took a bit of balance out of it.

Brought to JoJo for New Year's eve. This bottle was nice and drinking quite well. Leans toward a more fruit-forward modern style of Brunello. Still some touches of oak, and I think this has room to improve and smooth out further over the next 5 years or so. Would probably hold off on my remaining two bottles for at least a couple of years.

One hour decant. Round, medium bodied well articulated bottle with little in the way of noticeable tannins. Charcoaled Steak was a little too overpowering for this wine. Something less bold would have been a better pairing. Certainly in the drinking window and ready to drink!

If you approach this wine as having nothing, I repeat, nothing, to do with Sangiovese (or the Old World), you're going to love it. This is a full(-) bodied, oak spice bomb. I mean literally, you can keep your nose in the glass, for an hour or two, and do nothing but get off on the oak spice. Variety/Sangiovese influence? No, not really (read: none), but from a cocktail wine/bring me that oak-derived complexity, wow, this succeeds very well. Not something I wish to ever encounter again (life's too short), but, for what it is, it's pretty marvelous. For those that prefer young, heavily (expensive) oaked wines with little more than oak-driven perfume and glossy, creamy fruits. 13,5% abv., now thru 2024.
PnP, served non-blind; really got going at the 1 hour mark, fell off right at the beginning of the 3 hour mark.
Soy head nailed the review in my opinion. Not undrinkable but definitely not great. Fairly smooth , tart, bright cherry, lighter wine. blah. Definitely more old world style.

Oh no, I just went to delete this from inventory and CT says I have one more; was hoping this was my last, only bottle. Sigh. This is a very sad specimen indeed, dumbed down by its slathery oak, the fruits here just have no chance at all. Heavy much of the time, with muddled fruits and pretty much unrecognizable as Sangiovese. It worked ok with the meal, but the 2006 Salicutti Piaggione it was served next to wiped the floor with this. A cocktail wine from Montalcino zone, a sin in my book. For shame. 13,5% abv.
Audozed 3 hours, served non-blind. Be sure to serve at cellar temp for a better showing as it gets more muddled as it warms.

Decanted and had with steak, Brussels sprouts and corn. Give this more time for sure but agree with others it's drinking pretty well right now. Nice dark cherry, earthy aromas. Bigger Sangiovese wine but very easy to drink now, needs the time for some more complexity.

13.5% abv. Four years of total aging--two in 500-liter French tonneaux and two in the bottle. Reddish-purple color; semi-opaque. Some pungency. Effusive aroma of dark cherry. On the palate the dark cherry again, some length and a tannic bite on the finish. On the second evening, the tannins seemed softer, more in the order of fuzzy tannins. The wine seemed less strident on the whole and I liked it better. It's probably better to cellar it for several more years or decant it a few hours before dinner if opening it in the near future. I didn't assign a CellarTracker rating because I don't have much experience with Brunellos and not much basis for comparison. I drank this with broiled steak and baked potato.

Marvelous Sangio, shy aromas of dried, tart cherry, shoe polish, leather and faint cedar on a surprisingly faint nose. Moderately firm tannins and acidity is bright. Flavor profile is very well balanced with a nice earthy quality. Strawberry, mild tobacco, dark fruit and grape stem degrade nicely through a moderately long finish. Will enjoy seeing how this pup tastes with a few more years of cellar time.
1/4/2015 UPDATE: Thanks to rramaley for pointing out I had this bottle marked as flawed. Don't know how I did that as it most assuredly was not.
Recently purchased. Still young but ready for those who like to drink their wine "corse" as the French say. Depth, intense, superb balance. Tannins not an issue but a food wine. Bravo!

This is a great expression of the new wave of production in Italy. Building on tradition, this wine breaks the barrier to add to tradition and makes it better. I have had the 1997 and 2001 and 2004, this however (the 2007) is a unique expression of what they are trying to achieve….success on all fronts, I will be at the vineyard the week between September 21 and October 2nd when I am in Italy and can not wait to access some large format bottles. Will drink well for 15 plus more years. Sorry no classic tasting notes, they would not do it justice. Buy one bottle and try it, you will be hooked, but not until I fill my cellar with all I can.

Elegant and pure with intoxicating aromas of freshly crushed blackberries, vanilla, exotic spices, floral, menthol and subtle toffee along with hints of mineral. The medium to full body is supported by ultra-fine tannins which lead the way into the long chewy finish. This is an amazing of display high-quality Brunello from an excellent vintage.

- 2003 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova
- 2007 Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Altero
- 2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino
- 2010 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova
- 2012 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino
- 2013 Azienda Agricola Le Ragnaie
- 2015 00 Wines Chardonnay VGW (Starter wine)
