This is a terrific bottle of wine. I have 2024 down as the last year in the drink window. One bottle left. While the wine does not show any signs of tiring, I will likely drink the last bottle later this year. It used to require a decant. This bottle was just opened for an hour and a half.....did not need a decant. Warning.......the cork broke in half.

Excellent wine with a Chile poco carne meal. Smooth like a velvet glove with a firm hold on the fruit, mineral and earth tones that run through this wine. Tannins only showed by holding it together, this was a sleek and pleasurable glass to the end.

Enjoyed subsequent to the 2010 Shafer Hillside Select. Although not quite as deep and rich as the Hillside, this is an outstanding wine. Displays a plethora of black fruits, wonderful balance, very good complexity, and a long finish. Perfect for the grilled ribeyes. Drink through 2030.

In the bouquet ripe dark berries, sweet spices, red berries, eucalyptus, sweet licorice. Same on the palate, chocolate, beautiful acidity and round tannin with a lovely bite. Some pleasant sweetness as well. Beautiful and delicious wine in its early maturity stage.

Anniversary tradition continues. We opened another bottle of our wedding wine to celebrate the day.
The blue fruit notes are in full swing and the glycerin is starting to back off with more herb and mineral notes coming through at this point. The Abv is starting to show, so I recommend a quick decant and starting drinking before the fruit drops further.

a good new world wine, full of black currant initially with smooth tannin, then it's growing with vanilla, later slight mint and then give out dry plum. The wine looks purple colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis), vanilla and mint. It tastes like black currant (cassis) and vanilla. The body is medium. The wine has silky texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has medium acidity.

Nose: big black cherry nose with some wet stone, herbs and plum candy notes. Palate: Seamless and perfectly integrated tannin, black fruit, glycerin, leather and just a touch of thyme. Heat pokes out a bit on the back palate. Finish: lengthy and dark.
PNP for full enjoyment now. Best bottle of this yet. Served this at our wedding and kept a case to enjoy at anniversaries. Happy anniversary to my wife!
My 3rd bottle in under 60 days. Same tasting notes as before. Enjoyable, dark berries, and full bodied. Shafer always hits the spot and the 2010 has held up well for a 2nd wine.

More or less consistent with previous tasting note, although this bottle was noticeably more tannic than our bottle from five years ago, which surprised me. Hard to know which of the two bottles is representative, but another five years in the cellar can't hurt, right?

Almost a year since I last tried a bottle. Last time I PNP'd while this time I opened slow ox'd for an hour or so and then decanted and let sit for two hours and it did make a difference. The nose was dark fruit with a hint of fresh cut wood. The palate was dark berries, dark plum, cassis, a little wood and a touch of thyme which came out on the finish which was moderate to long. Served with a roasted leg of lamb which was crusted with panko, garlic, rosemary and dijon mustard. I have one bottle of the 2010 left and I will save it until next year to see if it develops further. With the disorganization downstairs in my cellar it will probably take me a year to find it anyway, Happy Sunday everyone

Unike my notes earlier this month, this time the wine was a flabby and lacking verve. It was enjoyable but lack any secondary flavor. Maybe it was because I was also drinking an 08 Feytit Clinet which beat this hands down.

Lovely, Blackberry, spice, cassis, soft tannin. I've never had a Shafer CS that I did not like. I think 10 years is the sweet spot for One-Point Five as I have had the 2013 and 2014 with little to no secondary flavors.

The 2010 One Point Five is outstanding at this juncture; full of fresh aromas and soft tannins, fresh barnyard after a cool rain, and lots of fruit. Give it 30 minutes, and what a pleasant surprise. Great with anything: beef, lamb, cheese - plus, or just simply drinking. If one is lucky to find a few bottles that have been stored properly at 55 degrees and perfect humidity... it will be a great find, and great drinking.

This was a perfect wine for a July 4 celebration with all of the great food that Memphis has to offer. It was big, powerful, balanced with wonderful combination of red and dark fruit. It was also smooth on the palate and had a finish that (as you would expect from Shafer) went on and on.

Really great. Ready to drink out of the bottle, BUT if you wait 2 hours, you will be treated to something great. The wine completely smooths out. It has a berry flavor that is not overwhelming and has some nice notes up and down the scale. smooth in on the tongue and stays that way in the finish. Did I say really great, wished I had more.

Decanted for sediment, accidently given 6 hours in decanter. No problem. This wine is full, elegant with fine nose, great flavor and long finish. Drinking well now, but will keep for years to come. Too bad I've been priced out of this market.

Big styled and a hedonistic success. Sl shift to wilting flower and dusty fruit. Drink now and look for more prominent tertiary development over the next 3-7 years.

A really good wine, unfortunately we had to pnp as I believe with either a long slow ox or a few hour decant the rating would have been much higher. There was dark fruit and flowers on the nose. The palate was dark berries, dark cherry, tobacco, dark chocolate and a hint of spice that came out in the finish which was long. I have two more bottles somewhere in my very disorganized cellar and I will hold them for a while.

Powerful and heady, this has fantastic aroma of wild flowers, menthol, sweet spice and cherry. Once tasted, there is blackberry and currant in abundance. At least one taster commented on the lack of balance to the fruit, but the power and energy overcame all objections for me.

Not my favorite Shafer I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity and subtle as of the fruit. Dry but some red cherry to round it out. Soft tannins, medium to long finish.

Underwhelmed. Super sweet. Dark purple in color (even hung to the sides of the glass). Dark raspberry, grape juice and blackberry. Smooth mid-palate the dissipates quickly. Not long in the mouth. In the style of a classic Napa Cab., but to me, it just did not have any of that "classic" quality.

Much improved over the tannic and grippy place it was two years ago. Delicious wine with all the right stuff. Best first day as it dropped off some the second.

Terroir-istes International - USA - California, Napa South (Cape Town Law offices): (Tasted Blind): An opaque black-red through to rim. Perfumed aromas of black cherry transition to red cherry, with hints of cough syrup, blackcurrant pastilles, and wine gums. A somewhat over-the-top style dominated by pastille flavours on entry with sweet, juicy bilberry, damson and spice cake, all enhanced by generous alcohol. With firm, grippy tannins with reasonable length, the wine is slightly unusual, focusing on syrupy, jammy fruits, some coffee notes and spice detracting from inherent complexity. It was a rounded, plump, heavyweight style that felt a little volatile with a watered-down palate compared to the previous wine. Closes with sour cherry and Ribena notes led me to think this is a crowd-pleaser and formulaic in nature.

2-1/2 hr. double decant. 99% Cab, 1% Petite Verdot. Half teaspoon of fine sediment. Perfumed nose of cherries and cassis. Deep, rich fruit, following nose, great balance and fine tannin. Long, lingering finish. This is drinking well now, will hold for many years to come.

Had this last night after 2 hours in a decanter. Absolutely elegant and delicious with tremendous fruit and balance. At one third the price of their Hillside Select (which I've also had) this Cab is a true bargain.

I last enjoyed this at the winery back in 2013 soon after release. Showing more complexity, density, and integration from what I recall from my previous notes. Decanted and enjoyed with a grilled steak. Aromatics noticeable from two feet away. Bright concentrated ruby color, very full body. Blackberry, dark cherry, cassis, sandalwood, celery, dark loam and light tobacco aromas and flavors. Well integrated, multilayered, and nicely balanced with a big long finish. Should easily cellar for another eight to ten years. Comes primarily from declassified Hillside Select grapes.

Deep, deep purple. Cassis, black currants, with a hint of smokiness. Very concentrated, but not overripe, with a nice balance. This should have several years left.

Continues to evolved nicely with dense black cherry, plum and crushed berry notes. Palate is evolving with some eucalyptus/mint poking through and some savory earth notes at the edges at this point. Youthful, but beginning to show some secondary nuance. Years ahead.

Color- deep dense purple blue Nose - black currant and strained red fruit. Taste - juicy black-currant-blueberry and red currant are the predominant flavors with hints of anise, cedar, and black pepper. The tannins are not overwhelming in potency but do linger and there is mild acidity.

My neighbor brought this over for the NCAA basketball tournament. Purple fruit - dark raspberry, currants, and blackberry. Smooth mid-palate with decent depth but I expected bigger/fuller fruit in light of Parker's 95 rating. Solid finish but not overly long nor deep. Decanted for one hour and drank over another three. Not much improvement with time but at a nice drinking point after the decant. Drank next to a 2010 Janzen Cloudy's cab and I thought the Cloudy's was quite a bit better - bigger/fuller fruit, longer/deeper finish, etc.. 99% cab and 1% petit verdot.

This bottle was a big hit at a cigar dinner. It used to require a fairly big decant, but does not need that now. Drinking well. I am confused by the inconsistency of the ratings in the tasting notes. When you need a deep dark red for dinner.....get a bottle of this one out.

A nice young cab. Purple coloured, but needed more than an hour in the decanter. Dark fruits and graphite, with a rich mouthfeel. 30 second finish. A nice wine, but a weak qpr given how high the price has climbed, in my opinion. But what Napa wine is different?

Only about an hour decant, but needed much more. Tannic and grippy with a solid structure and good blue and black fruit backing. The tannins were just too overwhelming for me the first day and only slightly better on day 2. This is a wine that I feel like has the potential to be special and has all the right elements, it just isn't there yet. Maybe in another 3 to 5 years. I have one more bottle, hopefully it will be better the next time.
Decanted for an hour. Great complexity and lots of potential, but still quite tight and a bit off balance. Should improve nicely with further aging and probably a longer decant!

This was a really solid bottle of One Point Five, much better than my other 2010 One Point Five I drank last summer. The bouquet just exploded out of the bottle and the wine was ready to drink from the first sip. It evolved nicely as the evening progressed which sparked a lot of coffee table conversation and made the experience all the more enjoyable.

Oddly, I think I preferred the 2011 version to this one. I think the 2010 has a lot of potential to get better, but on this night, the 2011 was better. Although the 2010 did have a longer finish.

This wine really grew on me. I decanted for several hours, and at first I just thought it was an alcoholic fruit grenade. But it opened up and really started to taste nice and a bit more balanced. It is so shafer, so stags leap, so napa. Dark black cherry, dark choc, plum, blackberry, and some gravel reminiscent of a pessac leognan almost. The alcohol is still too high in my opinion. And to be honest this is not a great qpr at 70 bucks. Maybe others can find it cheaper. The merlot is the same quality and about 25 bucks cheaper.

This is actually tightening up and required more decanting this year than it did last year. Upon opening there were Cabernet herb (sage, basil, green tea) notes showing underneath the Plum fruit on the nose.
Given an hour in the decanter and some vigorous swirling the SLD fruit really came out and the Shafer spice, plum, blackberry and blueberry came out of the wine. This is a really well balanced wine that is also massive in scale. Acid, fruit tannin all get in nice harmony once fully opened.
Best bottles were on release at this point, but showing a great prospective future. Locking up a bit right now, will revisit on 3rd anniversary.

Dunkles Lila-Rot Intensiv schwarzfruchtig.

This is a very good One Point Five--one of their better vintages in my opinion. Unlike many 2010 Napa Cabs, this wine is basically ready to go. Decanted for an hour and sipped without food.

Opaque, deep-violet, dense, juicy, with round and well-integrated tannins, but it lacks complexity. This is mostly about dark fruits with a sprinkling of spice and not much else. We were hoping for more, especially at this price---but it was a thoughtful gift; so who's complaining?

A very good wine. You need to let it breathe at least an hour. What a difference from first sip to the last half glass. Dark in color, average nose, rich and flavorful with berries, dark chocolate and medium tannins. Drank at home with Indian chicken curry. Me and my wife enjoyed it. I am glad I have few more bottles of this wine. A great value for the price.

Had alongside a 2006 Bryant. The wine was decanted for about an hour and was quite delicious. The Bryant was more integrated and finessed, and the Shafer was more primary and alcoholic. Both were great, but the Bryant outperformed the Shafer on this night.

did not have a chance to decant and it showed; still too young to show its stuff; has potential, but I should have waited. Light and tannic on the mid palate compared to the other One.Five's I have drunk. Will wait on the next bottle.

Had this wine with a filet mignon. Bottle took about 1 hour to open up and was still tight when it did. Very young, nice notes of graphites, light berries. There was a moment for about 10-15 minutes when the flavors exploded; however, they quickly faded out. This beat out a Domaine Serene (different style of wine) but I was hoping for more from this Shafer

PnP and it was delicious. Bright red and black fruits on the nose with a smooth, lingering texture and mouthfeel. Looooooong finish leaving you wanting for more.
These are special wines from Shafer and should be enjoyed at multiple stages of their lifetime. Given the quality and breadth of their lineup Shafer should be in the discussion as one of the top producers in California if not the world!
PnP and delicious. Juicy with black fruit and cocoa powder. I even got a hint of that martha's vineyard minty-ness. I find it a little one-dimensional but I think that's because it's still very young and will open up with a little air, and time is in this wine's favor. It can be enjoyed now but will probably better much better in a year or so.

Sat in the bottle for 1 hour after the cork was popped. Dark purple / garnet color, high viscosity. Intoxicating, lush black and blueberry nose, no noticeable alcohol despite its richness (good).
Full-bodied in the mouth, as expected with that color and nose. Some tannins, but generally subtle and smooth - will integrate better with a few more years in bottle. More black and blueberries and cassis, a hint of cocoa and tobacco.
Not sure it's worth the tariff (US$70) but it's a nice cab, very much in the new world mold.

Popped and poured, the wine was pretty unevolved and ungiving, very tight though deeply extracted. Better out of the sommelier glass than the Riedel cab. Very nice the next day but the difference between Sommelier and cab glasses was vastly more pronounced. Right now the wine is a lot of coffee bean and really tannic fruit but the overnight aeration revealed good promise and I speculate I will end up giving it a higher score later.

Similar notes to previous bottle...Blue and blackberries, complimented with licorice, tea and tobacco, all wrapped up in a silky, smooth and mouth-filling body. This is still a youngster so the tannins are firm and there is a touch of heat on the finish, but this is still drinking well now and should only get better in 3-5 years.

Enjoyed at the Shafer Winery during a guided tasting. Always a personal favorite, so expectations were high. Dark purple, almost black in color; full bodied. Rich aromas and flavors of currant, cassis, and carmelized vanilla with some distant earth tones and tobacco. Approachable now, but expect firm tannins. Decanting recommended near term. Full mouthfeel and a super long finish.

Had for a coworkers last day send off dinner. Have had One Point Five(s) before, I think the 2009 vintages. While this was definitely SLD being drinkable now with its round mouthfeel and tasty black fruit, it was not as appealing as prior vintages. This came across with too much oak for me, still great wine and very enjoyable, but it lacked the silkiness that made the '09 great to me.

Shafer Tasting (Napa Valley): This just didn't stand up to the other one point fives that i've had. This really lacked that structure and tannin profile I enjoy. Just linear and flabby with a subtle almost non existent finish. Just not worth the $72 it's calling for. Tannins didn't coat the palate and the finish stopped at the mid palate. Underwhelming.

Winorama with a surprise (engagement)!; 9/15/2013-9/18/2013 (Napa Valley California): This is my third experience with this wine and I fear it might be a casualty of such an amazing trip to Napa with so many fantastic wines. It had been opened and poured maybe 30 minutes before tasting and really hadn't had any time to develop a full flavor set. Some alcohol on the nose, a bit of dark fruit, tannins. Just overall feels too young and not many flavors coming out. Opened a bit in the glass, but mostly inaccessible right now. 98% Cabernet, 2% Petit Verdot and one of the largest productions with 8,000-8,500 cases.

Had at the Shafer dinner. Really dark purple, not much coming off of the nose. A bit of chocolate, and a little blueberry. Flavors is basic blueberry, a lot of vanilla. A bit over oaked. A little bit of black truffle, strawberry and rum spices flavors coming through. Not a huge fan.

Dinner with Doug Shafer. Have had this a few times before, different vintages, and never really been a big fan. This one was no different. But nice nose of blackberries, licorice, and ripe fruit on the palate. Sweet tannins, decent finish. Lacking in complexity and depth for a cab at this price, and was hoping to see more uniqueness, but felt like something that can be duplicated across napa. That said, it is without a doubt a tasty wine, but for my palate I prefer some others in this price range.

A wonderful, elegant wine that is still just a toddler learning to walk. Cherry and blackberries lead the charge, flanked by smoky vanilla, earthy fig and sage that provide complexity and hints of amazing nuances to come. All these flavors are transported on a silky, balanced structure and the tannins are firm, loving parents that will help guide this child to a delicious adulthood in years to come. Another winner from Shafer.

Nose: Blackberry, Black Cherries, Plum, Chocolate shavings and some sage notes. Palate: The wine has fantastic palate feel, suave and light on its feet, delivering a big punch of SLD fruit. Tannins are barely there on this after a long decant. Finish: Persistent and bold with nice Black Cherry, Espresso, cedar and dusty sage notes.
Decanted this bottle for about 3 hours prior to drinking and it really makes a difference.

Drank at a work dinner tonight. To be fair it was somewhat overshadowed by the '02 Verite La Muse which we started with. Crowd was a less wine sophisticated group and they expressed a desire for younger, bolder, and more alcoholic from the Verite and thus I took an opportunity to try the One Point Five (we have 6 sitting down waiting for some time). Popped and poured. If I were drinking at home I would have decanted for many hours and having now tried it without the decant I think a day would not be unreasonable. Very strong heat on the nose. Deep blackberries and a touch of maybe spice and cedar, but even on the palate the heat was palpable. This is a pretty good wine and I look forward to it being an even very good wine in 7-10 years. In the interim, I'd hold tough on opening a bottle.

dark fruit (black currant and black cherry) and alcohol on nose. black currants on attack but turns tannic on back end with long bitter tannic, dry and oaky finish. The fruit is very good on this wine but needs 5-10 years to calm tannins. Left bottle open for 30+ hrs and still was just as tannic as initial tasting. If this wine gets smoother over time can be a 90-94 point bottle.

Brief tasting. Persistent, toasted sweet oak on the nose with rich red fruit. On the palate, concentrated flavors packed tightly in a cloud of chewy tannins. Red and some black fruit were seemed to be in the mix. Was not in balance at the time. Medium acidity. Has the potential, but only time will tell if this has the ability to be aged.

Incredibly dark purple color in the glass with thick legs. Aromas of black plums, espresso, toasted oak, hints of rose petals. Grippy tannins provide solid structure. The plum skin, blackberry and cassis flavors are strong and compact and need time to develop. Acid seems a little low. On the finish, flavors of black tea, espresso and dried leaves mingle with a big dose of toasty oak (it’s aged 20 months in 100% new French oak). If you’re drinking it now, a long decant is the way to go.

a good new world wine, full of black currant initially with smooth tannin, then it's growing with vanilla, later slight mint and then give out dry plum.

Decided to try a bottle early. Decanted for 3 hours. Was very good. Very, very dark in color. Thoroughly enjoyed it, but will likely let it sit for a year or two before trying another bottle. However, not sorry I opened this one.

Deep rich purple color. Good nose. Big bold full bodied with a hint of licorice and cassis with a leathery finish. Subtle tannins. Very approachable.

Dark fruit, spice, pepper, eucalyptus, cedar, smokey oak. Tannins are well integrated. Nice complexity and good length on the finish. The alcohol is a bit high which adds to some unbalanced acidity. A-

A dark and almost black colour with no transparency. Thick and nicely layered, then ends with a level of finesse. Blackberry, black tea, mint, Oreo cookie and lava rock, then there's a spark of Ethiopian coffee. Very ready and not shy at all. Drink now - 2022.

Deep ruby in color, with notes of licorice, coffee bean, jammy dark berries and chocolate. The fruit is sweet, ripe, round and fresh, forward in style with a long taste of black raspberries in the finish.
