2009 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots. Mid ruby, some viscosity; red fruit, leather, cherry nose; mid-body, acids; balanced tannins; rounding out; nice fruity finish. 16-16.5 UC Davis scale, 90-91 other scales.

PnP'ed. Comparatively to the '05 Grands Epenots, this came across more "low-key", or low-strung (which was surprising given '09 being a ripe vintage, and its Rugiens sibling being very much more showy & exuberant). Regardless, it had the similar Gaunoux characteristics - red-fruited w/ cranberries, strawberries, bits of spice & tea-leaves on the nose, and more tea (iron-buddha) favours followed on the palate, wrapped with red-fruits bolstered by nice acidity/freshness & supported with a nice structure, coming across as being very well-mannered/controlled/balanced. Still young, this should continue to evolve and get better with more cellar age.

A bit hard and austere. Bitter finish. Wasn't able to crack the code on this one. Had his 2009 Rugiens Bas a year back - which was much more interesting.

Served blind. Medium nose of bright red cherry and cranberry with some earth tones and a bit of reduction. Very structured and lean on the palate. Crunchy red cherry, cranberry with earth and tobacco tones. Surprised to see this was an 09. Not ripe at all and quite lean. That's Pommard, I guess. This has upside with 10+ years of cellar age.

A bit reserved on the nose, a touch animale? On the attack this is sweet, concentrated, bright cherry that are smooth and well integrated - Lovely wine.

nose was very closed, but clearly needs a lot of cellar time.
