At first very closed and not showing much. But it gradually relaxed in the breezy Spring night air after a couple of hours to display a daintily oxidized pinot noir. Subtle and elegant but surely better in a few more years. Otherwise, decant well in advance.

Oxidative nose, peach, honey, mandarin, and candied pineapple.
On the palate, the touch is exquisite although I did not expect so much evolution in this wine. It reminds me of a Jura wine or Substance. Once the oxidative veil has passed, the wine unfolds with exquisite flavors of mandarin peels, almonds, ginger, cinnamon and figs. This delicious complexity is revealed in layers, one by one, like the pages of a good book. Large finish on copper, with a majestic length which lines the throat with notes of honey.
Great champagne, with a very special Selosse style.

Piemonte: Truffles instead of Turkey; 11/23/2023-12/2/2023 (Barolo, Barbaresco, Alto Piemonte and of course Alba): My guess is this is a slightly older disgorgement but oddly it didn’t have anything written on the disgorge date on the bottle. It is certainly the more oxidative style. A wine that wants to be a wine first and have bubbles second. Interesting for sure. Also interesting to try next to the Marie Ledru where her wine had a bit more refinement in style and this was a bit more plush and extra. Still both quite enjoyable.

Signature Selosse, with all the oxidative (but not brassy) hallmarks that make this a unique but not completely isolating Champagne. This was more deeply pitched and colored than a 2006 VC Grande Dame Rose next to it. The Sous Le Mont is so unctuous while amazingly staying fresh and honed. Its honey, almond, grilled lemon, and marzipan qualities are almost like a young Yquem with bubbles. Light on its feet for such a cerebral Champagne.
Unknown disgorgement. The specific spot on the label that said ‘cette bouteille a ete degorge’ was unfortunately left blank or wiped off/completely faded.

Duck, duck, abortion!; 11/11/2023-11/17/2023: Nose showed gentle oxidative notes with a white, bitter floral note that helped give it some lift, golden honey, light notes of peaches, and peeled tangerines with its veins of pith. The aromas of peeled tangerines are pretty vivid, like you’re actually holding them in your hands.
Flavors seem to match the nose completely with nice bitter hay, a somehow fresh oxidative note, pleasantly deep golden fruits with a slightly odd bitterness (like overgrown tangerines as a result of overwatering). Shows just a bit better with some air time. Great freshness and lift, and thank goodness for it because I’m sure without it, this would’ve lost a ton of excitement.
Unfortunately, I did not note down the disgorgement date, it was smeared off by accident.

Classic Selosse with an oxidative nose, honey color in glass, and hints of almonds, fig and minerality. I would not have pegged this as 100% pinot. Although I preferred the Substance tasted earlier this year, Selosse in general is still one of the benchmarks of champagne.

Not blind, 3 lieux-dits cases, disg. 22, 21 and 15 side by side
I was a bit "disappointed". Not to understand me wrong, I liked all the wines and I'm a big fan of Anselme's wines but 18 bottles at one night are too much. Too powerful notwithstanding the acidic energy.
Every bottle was singing, no bottle was oxidized or corked but I hoped after the tasting to be able to distinguish the different sites and the different disgorgement dates. But in my opinion this is not possible.
You can identify Selosse (roasted pinenuts) easily but sometimes the 2015 disgorgement was the freshest, sometimes the expectable 2022. The sites to differ is maybe a touch easier. Especially the white ones from the red ones but even this is not for sure. I prefer the white ones. My favorite site didn't change after the tasting: It is Les Carelles followed surprisingly from the rare Chemin de Chalons.
I would love to drink the lieux dits as a single vintage. Maybe it would help more to detect the wine and disgorgement.
I preferred 5 out of 6 times the 2015 disg. They profit from 5-8 years of bottle aging IMO to get more settles and balanced.
But you feel the influence of his son. The champagnes are less oxidative and more accessible.

Nose: Dried dates, apricot, red berries, raspberries Notes: disgorged Feb 2013. Quite some subtle steely minerality in the palate with an explosive signature JS nose. The finesse and the contradicting characteristics of the Sous le Monts has been quite a wonderful experience. My last Sous le Monts was a more recently disgorged one and I remember not liking it very much but this bottle was superb. In excellent condition, this wine is drinking superbly and was very much enjoyable. Still very intense and energetic I suspect this can be cellared further. Drink: 2025+ Rating: 92

Nose: honey, fig, white flower, mushroom Notes: Disgorged in 2017. Quite some intense minerality. Again Selosse is well known and probably the best maker of oxidative styled champagne. This Champagne had its signature written all over it. The nose is so beautiful and elegant, absolutely incredible. The palate is bone dry with rich minerality. I feel this might require 2-3 more years of cellaring. Selosse champagne has a certain artistic value in it that is unrivaled by other makers. Although I might prefer other Selosse cuvees to this one yet it is undeniable that this is a top class champagne. Drink: 2025+ Rating: 90

January 2017 disgorgement. The first smell is red apples. It has a gentle nutiness too. The palate is vinous and full, with plenty of savoury nuance. The finish is super chalky and salty and flavours linger.

Charleston VII; 11/2/2022-11/6/2022 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): On the heels of aged champagne and so this came across as incredibly light and bright and soft and honestly a bit less flavorful. We gave it time in the glass but this never quite got where I'd have expected it to be. Disgorged in 2017 so perhaps needs more time.

Had at a restaurant. Disgorged 1/2018 (2011 base fruit?) Needed about 1 hour from pop to reach pinnacle of the night. BdN fruit, and was honestly expecting more in all dimensions. Best way to describe the experience was "fullness to the precision". The red fruit took a secondary role here and the best part of the wine was the intensity of the mid palate and finish (not depth of mid palate). If I had to guess, it probably was stunted by the 2011 vintage. Was a solid champagne but not for me at the price

Disgorged in February 2015. Gorgeous. Amber robe, nose of cherry, orchard, hints of rancio, caramelized apple, nuts. Very complex, lots of energy, incredibly focused and dense. Extremely refined bubbles, amazing depth, long aftertaste. One of the most impressive blanc de noirs Champagne I have ever tasted, while I am more a chardonnay guy.

January 2021 disgorgement, 2014 base (I believe). Really beautiful, elegant, nuanced cuvee. Delicate red fruits, some ginger spice, coppery color in the glass. Perhaps his most subtle cuvee? It opened slowly over 2+ hrs and it worked really well at the table (I think that Selosse's wines should really only be drunk with food) with a variety of flavors. Will have years ahead.

Lafite Rothschild vertical (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Slight pink/cooper color. Beautiful complex nose displaying subtle sweet red and yellow fruit, raspberry, pomegranate, peach, apricot, apple cider vinegar, caramel, marzipan, yeast, smoke and limestone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of subtle red and yellow fruit, rich and sweet but also showing a very good balance and harmony, bright acidity and strong mineral, and a seamless long sweet red and yellow fruit driven finish with yeast and apple vinegar at the end. This incredibly complex Champagne has a very “natural wine” impression. Very unique, delicious, and natural expression.

Disgorged 09/2012. Dark color, with oxidative notes, bruised apples, walnuts. A friend made a reference to apple cider, which I agree with completely. Minimal bubbles, it really shows the character of the base wine. Complexity improved with time in the glass.

Selosse (Oceanic, Pompano Beach, Florida): An especially rich style of Selosse Pinot Noir, the Sous le Mont is fabulous. What makes it endlessly fascinating is the deliciously nutty flavor of walnuts. The acidity is perfectly judged so it’s not the least bit tiring. Oxidation is in the background even though it’s obvious. Medium full and rich rather that a behemoth. It changes minute by minute so you are never fatigued. Intellectual and hedonistic.

At the sight, one is very quickly challenged by the amber color of the wine which is older than its age. The effervescence is delicate.
The nose is enchanting, on black fruits, plum, redcurrant, a touch of smoke and a rancio side. Airing will give it added complexity with a delicious floral touch.
The mouth is dense, with this oxidative signature characteristic of the domain. The juice is magnificent in amplitude, loose, contained power. It's vinous and concentrated, on a superb balance with an acid frame of goldsmith that stretches the wine in a serene way. A real quiet force, where black fruits, vinosity and nuts such as hazelnuts blend harmoniously. Great explosive finish of freshness, it lines the mouth over a nice length.
Excellent, I was sometimes less enthusiastic about the Selosse' plots, but this bottle was a concentrate of pleasure.

Initially citrus, with orchard fruit and a hint of oxidative note. With air, the wine picks up some weight into a honied orchard fruit, and nutty almond note. Bright lively acidity keeps it fresh. Delish.

Jacques Selosse horisontal tasting of 9 cuvees (Krüff): All wines were presented by Guillaume Selosse. For me the best cuvee this afternoon was 2007 Millesime, extra Brut, 94+. An unexpected no. 2 was Les Chantereines with 93+. Usually my favourite from Selosse is Les Carelles which this time ended with 92, the same as Chemin de Chalon. All these Top Four cuvees are BdB.
This wine: Medium gold color. Excellent especially on the nose, ripe red apple, strawberry, High intensty. Very high acidity.

Very vinous style here with a rich nose and palate of caramel-laden blood orange and dried stone fruit- type fruit with brown spices and yeasty complexity. The intensity and layering come out as this warms up; has a heavy impression in the mouth with ample, almost lush (for Champagne) mouthfeel. Plenty of acidity but the low to zero dosage shows no harshness/racy impressions. Toast, vanilla (oak?) and caramel dominate with air time. 93-94. What a treat!!!

While the label gave tribute to grapes coming from six different locales, there was nothing to indicate base year, disgorgement,… I’ve cellared it for over 3 years since purchase. An interesting salmon/light copper color; an airy, perfumed nose of wildflowers, peach and tangerine; palate was initially almost painfully austere and dry as hell. Over a couple hours time it opened up and displayed wonderful vinosity and came into balance. I was quite hesitant as to making judgments on this due to others’ musings on oak treatment and “oxidative style“. Didn’t stop 3 wine lovers from draining the bottle before moving on to six old burgundies. While this was definitely unique and outstanding, for the price I’d rather enjoy two bottles of Krug Grande MV and still have a few dollars left over.

Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): Ah what a treat and definitely my WOTN. This was just lovely. A 2019 disgorgement so still fairly young but even in the few years since we've had this there's been evolution. It's spicy and brioche and just plain interesting. Keeps bringing you back. I am a major fan.

Disgorged February 2020. Complex aromatics of roasted nuts, rye bread, aniseed, cherry and baked apple. The palate is rich and powerful, with great depth and volume. It builds and fans out on the finish, carried by tangy/saline minerality.

(2017 Dis) So much better than my last bottle. This Selosse was mesmerizing: I did not want to finish my glass for fear that I might get another sip. It had an etherealness to it that put it somewhere between Champagne and the unknown. It was refreshing and haunting at the same time. Just wonderful. A lot of the table conversation surrounded this wine and it sparked me to get some more.

Selosse Lieux Dits Part 2-The Pinot Noir Based Wines: Similar deep color to the Cote Faron with similarly strong oxidative notes. This wound up being the heaviest of the 3 wines. Tart black fruit complemented by a whiff of citrus. Creamy feel, lower acidity than the Cote Faron. It reminded me of several bottles of Selosse's Substance and was my least favorite wine-just too oxidative in style for me.

The Sous Le Monts is a big step up from the Bous du Clos next to it. 100% Pinot Noir from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Disgorged in 2013. Brilliant energy and intensity of ripe tropical fruits, lacy red berries and spices. This is up there along with Cote Faron, perhaps slightly more elegant. (93-94/100)

Appearance: fine mousse, iodine color-very unique.
Savory and port-like bouquet with raisin, lemon, honeycomb, baking spices.
Taste: Begins with a viscous, raisin taste. Oxidative, round, acidic, effervescence fades quickly.
+30 minutes: Raisin fades and moves to cantaloupe and prosciutto. Acidic, chalk, mouthwatering salinity, wet granite. Mouth puckering. Long finish with lemon curd and more minerals.

Nose on white fruits, peach, it is very sweet at the beginning, then it increases in power.
Very nice touch on the palate. It's lively but still smooth. Very chalky, like an energy full of velvet. We still feel a great tension, it must have been raw when it came out. Beautiful material, with a balance of goldsmith. Not very winey for a Blanc de Noirs. Big finish where the fruits come back in force. We have a nice painting by Mareuil there. Certain potential with aging.
I loved. Excellent.

Sous le Mont is one of the three Pinot Noir single vineyard (lieux-dits) Champagnes from Jacques Selosse, also the least powerful wine of the three. The vineyard is located on the same hill as Clos des Goisses as well as around the side. Blend of three vintages. This bottle was disgorged in 17 Jan 2019, so possibly 2012 base vintage. Tasted blind and was immediately stuck by its oxidative and ultra-ripe fruit profile. Plenty of red berries, lively lemons and sweet wood spices. Vinous and blunt. Guillaume Selosse? 100% Pinot Noir? Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): From the wine list at More et Macine (La Morra). Jan-2019 disgorgement. I spied Selosse on the list for less than US auction prices. Started to launch my persuasive argument to the group and they were already on board - woohoo! A new tradition was born for this trip - let's start every meal with bubbles. Initially too cold, so we pulled out of the ice bucket. As it warmed to room temp - the flavors really start to shine. I love the pale hint of rosé color on this wine. Warm toasty oxidative notes come through along with the bright acidity and red-fruited Pinot Noir. Pretty and refreshing!

Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): Champagne for the red wine drinkers palate. Originally served in a champagne bucket and in an effort to speed the evolution we kept it out and I tried to leave my glass alone as much as is possible when there is selosse in there so it could get some evolution. For as much as I did it, I was rewarded. The last sip I had of this wine was by far the best. It just adds some extra layers of complexity. It's a special wine and yet it's super young (Jan 2019 disgorgement) and so I don't think as special as it could have been. Added some weight and good acid and then just maybe a touch of the fancy french brioche.

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Fourth Session (Clarity - Vienna, Virginia): More Rose nose than BdN, succulent yellow and red fruit, peach, apricot, cherry soda, pomegranate, apple cider vinegar, ginger, caramel, cinnamon, smoked salmon and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered succulent yellow and red fruit, rich and sweet, yet pure and precise, generous fine mousse, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long succulent red fruit driven finish with brioche and cinnamon at the end. Comprehensive Selosse (Chicago, IL): Disgorged February 2017. This was my second favourite of the pinot flight. Again, this didn't seem to show the integration that the Bout du Clos had; it was overall a bit clunky again. There's the typical Selosse oxidative elements here, as well as a mild dose of browned apple and mushroom, but on the palate, the elements don't seem to mesh together well. Perhaps a little prickly at this point? This also smoothed over some rough edges with air, and in hindsight I wonder if decanting or opening the bottles earlier would have helped.

Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago – DRC RSV vertical, Selosse – Lieux-Dits and etc. (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Very vinous nose displaying shy red fruit with a hint of yellow, a hint of raspberry, raspberry soda, strawberry candy, dry peach, smoked salmon, brioche, cinnamon, candied ginger and limestone. Very good concentration, subtle yet rich concentrated red fruit with a hint of yellow, fine medium generous mousse, bright acidity and mineral, and a long rich red fruit driven finish with cinnamon at the end. The fruit expression is delicate like Krug Rose, but the body is decisively richer and fuller.

From the wine list at Legacy Records (NYC). Did not get the disgorgement date or year unfortunately, but remember it had some years on it. Wow this was absolutely delicious! Pretty much the WOTN across the table. Where the Agrapart Venus was lean and austere - this was just rich and open but still maintained a brightness & minerality - the finish was incredibly long. When a Selosse bottle is on (and particularly with some time in the cellar) it is just a great experience.

Beautifully integrated palate, nicely layered shy yet rich and sweet red fruit, generous medium fine mousse, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long shy yet rich red fruit and ginger candy driven finish with cinnamon at the end. Salty Pidgin with Simon and friends (Brooklyn, Wellington, NZ): Served blind. Disgorged January 2016. Copper coloured, small bead, persistent mousse. A complex, multi-faceted bouquet of raspberries, red currants and other red fruit, rust, almond brioche, and blanched nuts, with roses and other florals. On palate, complex and layered. I assumed that this was an old Champagne, mistaking oxidative for oxidised. Selosse is an autolytic, rich, oxidative style you either like or you don’t. I do. An extraordinary Champagne. Smoked salmon, minerals, toffee apple, apple pie with clotted cream and those red fruits.

Disgorged 30th January, 2017. Rich, powerful and intense with notes of grilled nuts, red fruits, hay and baked apple. There's real chalky grip to the long finish.

A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Mostly Burgundy (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Yellowish copper. The nose is more Rose than BdN. Complex harmonious nose displaying sweet red and yellow fruit, essence of raspberry, cranberry, yellow peach, brioche, cinnamon, nutmeg and iron/mineral. Perfectly integrated harmonious palate, beautifully layered subtle sweet red fruit, generous very fine mousse, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a long clean raspberry water and cinnamon driven finish. This is a serious yet so darn delicious champagne.

The first bottle that we tried had been opened for a few days and it was quite meaty with red fruits and a layered and creamy feel in the mouth. Anselme then opened a fresh bottle that had better structure, more tang and precision. Both bottles were awesome

2017 disgorgement. First taste of the day, and this seemed a bit tightly spooled to me. Just a small tasting pour - so no chance to let it sit an unravel in the glass. Bright acidity and some minerals, but not a lot else happening for me at this point. I think this wants some more cellar time, but if popping now, try to give it time to open up in the glass.

Acker Auction - April 2018 (Marea in NYC): Was dealing with a bit of a soap smell issue with the glass so take this with a grain of salt. This champagne seemed a bit closed down to me. A hint of spice and interest, but not nearly as open as the Initiale poured later.

Yellow with a slight pink tinge. Forward aromatics of honey, herbs, and strawberry. Full, minimal dosage, vibrant red and black fruit with tremendous crushed stone and an unending finish. Fantastic Champagne which will last a few decades since it is built like a red wine.

Disgorged March, 2016. Light tawny with red tint. Distinctive nose of flowers, herbs, and red fruit. Full bodied. Wild, dynamic entry of caramel and vivid strawberry followed by a wave of tannin and minerality. Dry but not austere at all. Structured like a red wine. Unique and exciting now, but one can't help but feel that this has a load of development that will happen over the years.

March 2015 disgorgment. Remarkable and very special wine. Light pink/salmon color. Very feminine, floral perfumed nose. The wine is remarkable lithe yet detailed and long and intense. Weightless yet resonant. Quite young but this will be fascinating to watch develop. Best bottle of the Sous le Mont I've had.

Disgorged in 2016. It has the most complex nose among the 6 selosse in the collection. Peach, brioche, almond, raspberry mousse and stone on the nose. Palate is oxidative and expressive with lots of stuffing that resemble the nose. This is probably my second favorite after the more complex and explosive Avize.

Pale salmon/orange colour really stands out - pure Pinot noir from 1er discouraged Jan 2015. Lots of almonds and oxidised aromas on pouring and fresh in mouth. Needs lots of air to integrate and eventually the wine shows much more fruit (raspberry) and sweetness. Classy now but will become spectacular in 10yrs! Hold to 2025, but based on experience this may not peak until 2030! 96pts now with potential for 98pts in 10yrs. 96-98pts.

Disgorged March 2nd 2016. Looks like a rosé with its beautiful amber color - very different from the two other PN lieux-dits that have the color of pale lager. Possesses the most magnificent ripe sour cherry fruit on the nose. There is also a hefty amount of stylish oak and notes of smoke and Marsanne-esque almond. Absolutely gorgeous aromatics. Mouth-caressingly rich on the palate with good acidity hidden underneath the concentration. Perfumed and spicy with an exotic and even wild feel to it. Ultra savory and chewy all the way to the very end. Remarkably complex and characterful and closer to red wine in its expression than the two other PN lieux-dits.

Gogget februar 2015. Meget spesiell på duft. En uvanlig mineralitet her. Gips og flint comes to mind. Vanskelig å plassere. Jeg liker det! Veldig steely på smak, men på en god måte. Konsentrert med såvidt nok friskhet. Lang finish hvor denne Mineraliteten tørker i munnhulen. Veldig kul vin å smake.

Copper colour in the glass. Sherried nose with orange citrus zest, clementine, tangerine, grapefruit, and raspberry. Sugar cookie. Palate has a pleasant bitterness. Developed and textured Pinot noir fruit. Very intriguing and also highly indicative of the house style.

This was disgorged in january 2012. Drank at Rossignol dinner. Oxidized, but not as much as the vintage 1999 I had the next week. Still very lively acid that went beautifully with the sherry notes. Bubble still strong. Great wine, but time to drink up.

Comprehensive Jacques Selosse dinner (Source by Wolfgang Puck, Washington D.C.): Subtle yet decadent nose displaying sweet red and yellow fruits, strawberry jelly, yellow peach, brioche, yeast, sweet spices, smoke and iron/mineral. Excellent concentration, steely, cool and precise, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long clean finish. With air, it gets fresher, rose water and fresh strawberry emerge.
Per David White, author of But First, Champagne.
“Dosage: 0-3g/l A perpetual blend of Mareuil Pinot Noir started in 2005. This is sourced from a vineyard not far from Philipponnat’s Clos des Goisses. Spends about 6 years on lees.”

Whoa! This is ridiculously good. Rich onion-like color and Selosse oxidative style firing in all cylinders. It has the ripe, mature white fruit and the oxidative profile. It's so clean, alive, mouth coating and elegant that you can't stop salivating and going back for more. Stunning!

Special. Complex aromatics---yeast, nuts, some tropical fruit, some caramel, but also minerality. A head-turner. Not sure I'd pay the price of a mature Clos de Goisses to buy a young bottle of this, but it's undeniably great.

Served in a spectacular horizontal tasting of different Selosse Champagnes. Dég. January 2012. Interesting notes of citrus, also some red berries, baking spices, oxidative notes, nuts, also some pipe tobacco. It's medium-full bodied with medium-high acidity and small fine mousse. Very good length. I thought it was a small step down from the rosé today but overall another great Champagne.

2014 Disgorged. Distinct Selosse aromas, but this is particularly warm and peachy. Very peachy in color as well. A touch of smoke, but can understand how some describe the Selosse style with 'glue'. Dense palate with strong underripe mango and yellow apple fruit.

Wow, wow, wow! We sipped in small-bowl, Chardonnay glasses and, yes, we swirled. The bubbles are almost non-existent, but fine as and when they race to the top of the glass. Dark, amber golden yellow on the eye. From a distance, one would swear a reasonably well-aged white Burgundy. Aromas of toasty-almond, sourdough bread and a velvety lemon-lime. Wow, a slightly jazzy Corton-Charlemagne on the nose. Swirling, which many people caution not to do with Champagne, really brings out the nose. Palate is soft, toasted oak with all sorts of citrus (lemon, lime, pears, etc) washing along your middle palate. The finish lingers so long that two people can slowly sip this luvly for upwards of 5 hours. We equally like to sip a touch warm, i.e. 17C. Stunning!

SLDS June 2016 #2 (Mamak): D/g 12 Feb 2013. Pink fairy floss, lime, almond, lots of interest here - apple, sugar cookies, and a light oxidative tinge. Powerful across the palate, there is a brightness underneath that is really superb. Preferred this to a 2014 disgorged bottle tried last year.

Beautiful, slightly oxidized (house-style) notes of dried yellow fruits, some nuts, minerality, honey, orange zest, vanilla, and with some air also some malty notes. Dots and Bubbles with the Trait-d-union (Sydney, Australia): Disgorged 17/02/14 from solera. 2 g/l dosage. Roses and spice, plenty of earth and even some smoked charcuterie. The palate is medium weight, with a slight oxidative twang to it. Has good length and I found it had a real moreish quality to it. The weaker of the three Selosse wines at this tasting, but still decidedly unique and memorable.
Selosse by Roberto Petronio (Vila Viniteca - Madrid): From PN. Almost a salmon colour. Oily in the glass, lighter on the palate. Different and potent champagne. Creamy palate but a little shortie. Beheaded this year.

The Champagnes of Jacques Selosse (featuring all 6 Lieux-Dits) by the Rare Wine Co. (NoMad Hotel Penthouse, New York, NY.): Again from a solera stared with the 04 vintage, so it also contains 04 & 05 at this point. On the same hills as Clos de Goisses, but around the side. Also, Peter Liem told us that the vineyard soil contains a significant amount of Magnesium, and Selosse thinks this adds a bitterness to the wine). I found that bitterness on the nose, along with some funk or mushrooms, almost barnyard. Chalk. with lots of acid that combines with the bitterness. Good grip, but somewhat odd. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5./6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

France 2013 - Côte d'Or; 4/20/2013-4/23/2013 (Beaune): Darkest wine (besides the Rose). 100% pinot noir. Disgorged January 25, 2012 – Baked apple nose with some salted caramel notes. Soft and lighter mousse with decent acidity and a richer mouthfeel. This had the least amount of acidity, complexity and precision and for my palate won’t get any better with age. Very good.

Anselme Selosse (Jacques Selosse) Legendary Dinner (Spruce Restaurant, San Francisco): Single vineyard blanc de noirs based on 05 (solera style). Nose of anise, very aromatic, spices, mint, lychee, mind blowingly complex herbal nose; palate is fresh, clean, minerally, slightly bitter in a way that gives it a lot of complexity; finish is long. This is stunning, near perfect (nose is perfect) and completely different in character than any other Selosse or any other champagne tasted. Easily the best champagne that I have ever tried and a very unique wine. 98-100

The Champagnes of Jacques Selosse (Roberson Wine, South Ken, London): Disgorged 25Jan2012. 100% Pinot Noir, <5 g/l dosage. 2005 mostly in what will eventually become a solera champagne. Good colour. Spicy nose, rose, cinnamon, apple. A touch too rich on the spice side in a way unbalanced, like a young cote rotie. At first very closed and not showing much. But it gradually relaxed in the breezy Spring night air after a couple of hours to display a daintily oxidized pinot noir. Subtle and elegant but surely better in a few more years. Otherwise, decant well in advance.

DSG 01/2012. Base 2005. Very fine bubble.

Nose: Dried dates, apricot, red berries, raspberries
Notes: disgorged Feb 2013.

Nose: honey, fig, white flower, mushroom
Notes: Disgorged in 2017.

It opened slowly over 2+ hrs and it worked really well at the table (I think that Selosse's wines should really only be drunk with food) with a variety of flavors. Will have years ahead.

Blanc de Noirs old vines.

It reminded me of several bottles of Selosse's Substance and was my least favorite wine-just too oxidative in style for me.

I spied Selosse on the list for less than US auction prices. Started to launch my persuasive argument to the group and they were already on board - woohoo! A new tradition was born for this trip - let's start every meal with bubbles. Initially too cold, so we pulled out of the ice bucket. As it warmed to room temp - the flavors really start to shine. I love the pale hint of rosé color on this wine. Warm toasty oxidative notes come through along with the bright acidity and red-fruited Pinot Noir. Pretty and refreshing!

Pretty much the WOTN across the table. Where the Agrapart Venus was lean and austere - this was just rich and open but still maintained a brightness & minerality - the finish was incredibly long. When a Selosse bottle is on (and particularly with some time in the cellar) it is just a great experience.

Disgorged 2/2016. Really nice red berries. Good energy with a creamy and silky texture. A wine with great balance. Nice way to end the evening.

A perpetual blend of Mareuil Pinot Noir started in 2005.

Oxidative on the nose and oxidative on the palate. A very rich, but soupy and ultimately displeasing wine. Disgorged February 11, 2013. In the wine's defense, there were some poor misguided souls who thought they liked this.

Beautiful, slightly oxidized (house-style) notes of dried yellow fruits, some nuts, minerality, honey, orange zest, vanilla, and with some air also some malty notes. It's pretty full-bodied, but super fresh with pretty high acidity and great mousse. Excellent lemgth. A very impressive and unique Champagne from Solera system.

Good colour. Spicy nose, rose, cinnamon, apple. A touch too rich on the spice side in a way unbalanced, like a young cote rotie. Not integrated yet and we would suggest one waits a few more years and given the price tag.. pray! 92-93 for now at most
