Big and richly concentrated with dark berries, chocolate, and toast. Milky smooth and delicious coming accross young and very fruit forward. This thing is packed and hedonistically powerful. A wow wine if you like them big.

Loretta and I had this with grilled rib eye, potatoes and veggies on a hot June night. I expected the wine to enhance the meal, but it bogged it down. Thick, syrupy, too much oak. Barely made 90 in my book and definitely not interesting.

I would give this a 97 if you like the Maybach style, and a 94 if you don’t. I’m assuming most people reading this already like TRB and especially Maybach. It is so rich, decadent, opulent and plush. Not a lot of subtlety but tons of blueberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate molten lava cake. Tannins are soft and integrated. There is a port-like quality that makes it feel more desserty and less a wine to pair with complex foods. But for sure a boys night at a steakhouse is what this wine was born for.

This is awesome. Its classically structured and beautifully textured with pure delineated black fruits, rubbed lead pencil tip. Nose is fragrant from a foot away; blackberry and Creme de Kirsch. This is totally fleshed out with nary an edge, it shows it's class and pedigree well. Mouthfeel is creamy and soft-coating with all the black fruits, this goes long and remains consistent throughout. Perfectly balanced, this is just pure joy. The favorite on the table and there were some beautiful wines on that table.
I remember when this came out, there was some controversy from a major critic to which I had already tasted it and disagreed whole heartily. The critic was scheduled to be at on of my CLONYC dinners and I reached out to the winery. Both the 2010 Materium and 2010 Amoenus was sent. The critic re-tasted and believed his first impression was caused by mishandling of that sample, maybe open too long. It was a fun evening.
Decanted for 2 hours and it benefitted. Great nose with cherry, blackberry, cassis, smoke, graphite, smoke, tobacco. Lots of flavor showing blackberry, cassis, tobacco, cherry, smoke, graphite. Well balanced showing nice acidity. The tannins have softened in the long finish. Really good now, but no hurry to open my last bottle.

This is the vinous equivalent of a high-quality piece of chocolate: it is tasty and complex, but it’s still a piece of candy (albeit a very good one). The rich and saturated flavors that the Materium typically offers are present but less pungent, as the wine seems to have aged more than matured. It's still tasty and a lot of fun, but I would have probably enjoyed it even more at the 4-6 year mark.
Dark purple in color and full in body, the wine offers incredible aromas of cherry tart, red licorice, and menthol (that could be bottled as modern Napa Cabernet.) The flavors are more straightforward, with notes of blueberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate, followed by a sweet finish that doesn't have a lot of lift. Decant at least an hour, to blow off some of the juiciness, and watch out for sediment, of which there is plenty. 14.8% alcohol.

I poured it into a decanter and let it breathe for 1.5 hours. An amazingly sweet and aromatic nose. You're left hoping it tastes half as good as the nose. For me it loved up. Not overly acidic but not flabby fruit. Its just right. Mellow with fleshy sour cherry notes. Note: I had this after a juicy bourbon burger hot off the grill. Flavor profile very likely impacted. Also, had after some Ridge Zinfandel earlier in the day. So the contrast was notable.

This isn't a big Napa fruit bomb--it's a really tasty wine made in the Bordeaux style. Definitely needs to decant for at least an hour or two. I bought this magnum six years ago and was glad I waited. There's still a lot of life in this Materium. Cheers!

Not bad, but the texture was a little grainy. This bottle would have merited a strong score if it possessed the silky texture mentioned by others. Purchased recently in the secondary market from a reputable dealer, but of course that’s no guarantee. The cork was intact but did break on the way out. Anyway, I’d recommend an hour decant if you have (or buy) a bottle.

Wonderful nose but needs a couple hours to round out the fruit and weight in the wine. After the two hours this is a dense, lush, velvety wine. Paired great with sous vide prime rib eyes.

Rich, ripe, and wonderful. There is a flavor here that I can't quite identify that is holding me back from a higher rating, but the fruit, structure and super fine focused tannins here are all top notch. Very good, drinking well now right out of the bottle, but even better with a little air.

Thick, dense purple with aromas of vanilla, varnish and green pepper with the varnish burning off with air time. Full bodied and mouth coating jammy with plum and vanilla on the palate. A touch of extracted sweetness creeps in occasionally. Good acidity in the middle and mint on the finish.

Opened about 2 hours prior to dinner. Started out a little heavy and jammy. Second glass was really singing with the silkiness I have come to expect with this wine.

Pnp, then drank over 1.5 hours. Tight, unrevealing for the first hour. Had the '09 two nights earlier - open, delicious wine candy. This '10 was tight, with best glass at the end but still not as great as the '09 Materium. Hold for further development/improvement.

Get together for the NFL playoffs. 2013 Carter Weitz, 2014 Barnett Rattlesnake, 2010 Maybach Materium, 2013 Lewis cab, and 2012 Rivers Marie cab.
Dark purple fruit - blackberry, blueberry, currants, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with nice depth. The tannins are still fairly strong/full which I enjoy but also integrated quite well. Long/deep finish. Decanted for two hours and drank over another three. Improved with time but drinking quite well after the decant.
Four hour slow ox followed by 30 min decant. Pretty young still but still a show stopper. Laser beam of dark and red fruits. Well integrated tannins that show up and clench down on the finish. Nose was very reticent. Started to show down half way through the bottle.

I drank my last bottle 18 months ago and rated it 93. The wine has really improved since then. I'd say the '10 is my wine of the year (WOTY). This is a dense wine. Slight tannins. It was so delicious. I parked with this wine most of the evening. Drank with Odds at a Champagne dinner. Drink or hold. 95, bordering on 96 points.

It was my neighbors birthday, so I went home and got this to celebrate. Pop and pour, it really needed more air. The last glass was the best. Still, it was delicious now. Purple in color. The nose has leather, cassis, some spice and vanilla. On the palate, this is very smooth, not quite seamless as the oak and tannins are still present. Another few years though and it should be there. Lots of depth and complexity. Great acidity. Long finish. Gorgeous wine.

Loren brought to a first spring dinner and for my birthday. The star of the night. Obviously opened well in advance as I would expect from Loren. Deep inky red. Huge jammy dark red fruit ( cherry, blackberry pie). Started off with huge fruit forever. Then some tobacco mid notes and some tannin to follow. Will have a long life. My first Maybach but I hope not my last. Great birthday. Dark chocolate as a desert was then a fabulous follow to this.

Slow ox for an hour, then after a sniff thought this guy could use a decant -- it got about 4 hours in decanter. Noticed a decent amount of sediment when poured into decanter, but cork was stout; stained dark at the bottom, but just the very tip of the cork. More like what you would expect from a 1 year-old wine.
Inky purple in color. Lots of legs in the glass. Nose of mushroom and damp earth. Fruit trended towards plum. Medium + weight, medium + finish. Tannins well integrated already. Would characterize the finish as solid, but unspectacular.
Overall this is a very nice wine, but didn't quite live up to expectations. I have only had the Materium twice before, and those were small/random tastings -- so this is the first bottle of it that I have popped. Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe I have just been drinking a lot of killer young wines from Napa lately (2012's and 2013's). 94 is no slouch, but for me personally, that is its ceiling. The fruit profile was not my favorite, and the finish left something to be desired.

We sipped at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Happy Valley Clubhouse with friends and members of the management team while snacking on victuals from guest chefs visiting from Chengdu. Dark, inky black purple on the eye. Wow, opaque...we like!!! BBQ toasty-smokey berry berry perfume that started to blossom after 4 hours breathing in the bottle and 1 hour in a decanter...we should have started with the decanter, but thought we would be safe...word to the wise either allow 6+ hours to breathe in the bottle or decant for 2+. Full-bodied - think the Maybach car - with outstanding balance. The fruit stood-up extremely well to the spicy Sichuan fare. A blockbuster of the wine that lingered in our mouths for nearly two hours after we finished sipping!!! We think will truly blossom by 2020...this definitely is a Megan Trainor "all about that bass, no treble".

Decant for an hour and then to dinner. Very dark, rich berries, but not all plush black fruit...there is a leaner, tauter red streak that keeps it much more interesting and balanced. TRB somehow makes it drinkable now but not too heavy or cloying...very nice
I thought the '08 and '09 were better than this vintage. The '10 wasn't blow away, like the '08 was. Popped this in Tokyo. Nice inky color. Olive nose. Tannins that would fade over 2 hours. Silky. Chewy. I'd hold onto this.
Maybach 2010 Materium sourced from 1000 feet above the Silverado Trail on the eastern hillside of Oakville. The vines struggle to grow among boulders and stones and in shallow soil, resulting in a deeply concentrated, elegantly textured Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2010 Materium is deep purple all the way to the edge with a bountiful aroma. The mouth feel is velvety and balanced consistent with the Thomas Brown style. Flavors tend to raisin, prune with earth and medium toast wood. Even at its young age it is balanced from front to back. Good to drink now but better in 3 to 5 years.

Tasted blind: Almost black in color. Nose of dark black berries, chocolate and plums. Lots of concentration, long and highly precise. The wine shows still baby fat but has an enormous potential. Eventhough the wine is already extremely hedonsitic, the real firework will come in a 5 years. Drink now - 2030

Poured in the decanter and drank over the next 3+ hours. Initially it showed a lot of sweet dark berry fruit with some oak relatively prominent. After a few hours, this developed into something pretty nice with a good structure and balance. Still pretty fruit forward with a mix of cranberry and blueberry. Something just seems to be holding this back at this point, and probably proof that this should be held on for awhile.

Screagle, Kapcsandy, SHS, Abreu, Maybach, Donnhoff, etc., etc. (Downtown Cleveland): This was interesting. The nose has cassis, some pencil lead but also this green herbal note that never went away. Almost like that rosemary I often find in Chilean Cabs. It was still a lovely nose, but could have been better. No trace of green on the palate though. What a great wine. It was popped and poured and kept opening all night. Cassis, some cherries, slight earthy notes and a bit of charred wood as an under layer. Long finish. Great texture.

Dark ruby, almost inky, with herbal and woody aromas in the glass. Tasting this is pure pleasure, with rich, concentrated blackberry and currant flavors, overlapped with chocolate and spice. A bit a tannin on the aftertaste, which I expect will soften with age, so this should get better.

Great aroma of blackberry, black current with excellent oak complement - little jumps out of the bottle when decanted and strongest of the night. Not as much complexity as the 2007. The mouth feel is rich with good structure and not too fruit forward and the oak is really nice transition into the pleasant finish. Really excited to have this again in several years.

New Year Celebration; 12/31/2013-1/1/2014: I could not resist to pop another bottle of this amazing wine. As my previous experience this wine displayed very nice fruity flavors of currant and cherries, caramel, chocolate. This wine is powerful yet at the same time elegant. It is a modern type of Napa wine but what I like about it is that its not fat as many of its counterparts. Drink now - 2025.

My experience with previous vintages of this wine has shown it to be lush and opulent and very expressive. That is one of the things that I love about this wine. However, tonight this wine was very reserved and restrained. Shy black fruits on the palate with firm mineral-laced tannins. Maybe it was just this bottle, but it was not the Maybach that I am usually accustomed to drinking.

Expressive nose of black raspberries and sweet currants with a faint not of orange peel? Palate shows some beautiful texture with the black fruits in the lead and the blue close behind. Hints of lead pencil, boysenberries and worn leather. This is pure, refined and classy. Tannins are subdued and balance spot-on while finish keeps in all in its tidy little package beckoning another sip. These are always such a joy to open; elegance wrapped in more elegance. Pretty impressive stuff.

Tasted blind: Wow, what a wine. Dark in color. Nose of coffee, cherries and tar. Tastes very young but at the same time is quite approachable. More dark fruit, cherries, chocolate, moccha and creme de cassis. What a wonderful wine. Now in a hedonistic drinking phase.

This Materium has excellent material and has the potential to be an unbelievable Cali Cab. Today this comes across as just a bit to tight and young despite 6 hours of slow-ox and an additional hour of decanting. Maybe I should have given it a couple of more hours, as there was just a bit too much heat from the alcohol. However, there is no question about the pedigree of this Materium, with its incredible nose and deep rich flavors. This starts out extremely dark in color, with black and blue jammy fruits, cherries, blueberries, spices, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and earth flavors. This also has a wonderful complexity that is a bit hidden by the upfront fruit and alcohol today. I will wait at least a couple more years before trying my next bottle. For me this has 96-98 point potential with a bit more age. In fact, the 2010 Maybach Amoenus is drinking a bit better today than the Materium.

Day one this was very ordinary for materium. Vacuum sealed and put back in the cellar. Towards the end of night two the wine transformed. I only had a glass left but WOW what a diff. I may be low with 94 but the first 3/4 of the bottle still has clouded my judgment. Look forward to a proper decant on the next bottle.

Dark in color, and filled with jammy black and blue fruits, chocolate covered cherries and spice, the wine is big, deep and powerful. Think of biting into jammy berries dipped in chocolate. The wine is big, intense and packed with flavor. While this is clearly well made, which gets it the points, it lacked something special that made me want to keep drinking it.
Opened a split as a pre-game before a wine dinner. Absolutely killed this baby which is full of primary blue fruit. It feels, smells and tastes like a barrel sampling and needs at least 5 years in bottle. My score is more of a reflection of where its going than where it is right now.

This showed some popcorn initially but really evolved into a pure powerhouse with tons of potential. Having spent mere minutes in its bottle, some years would help. I may go on the limb and say its one of the best Materiums I have had at this young stage of its life. I may put it in the company of the 2006 and 2009. Just having a phenomenal 2004 a few months back tells me to be patient and rewards will come. That one bottle insured me trying on patience again in my ‘advanced’ years. Blue-black fruits with creamy midpalate and long finish. An easy WOTF for me 93+

Pnp, then drank over 1.5 hours. Tight, unrevealing for the first hour. Had the '09 two nights earlier - open, delicious wine candy. This '10 was tight, with best glass at the end but still not as great as the '09 Materium. Hold for further development/improvement.
